- FatLoser, on 01/17/2008, -2/+3Naa, some dickwad just copy-pasted part of the article in a digg comment.
- sweatyyeti, on 01/17/2008, -3/+5Thank you. I really needed to read that again.
- UNL1M1T3D, on 01/17/2008, -3/+9Anybody get the feeling of Deja Vu?
- EmperorAnton, on 01/17/2008, -7/+5tremendously insightful list..number 15 has to be my favorite.
- topgigmedia, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1I think #16 really embraces #15 and takes it even a bit further. If only we could all embrace #16 - then we could stop there.
- BuzzDiggity, on 01/17/2008, -9/+40ah... the bliss of hopeless idealism...
- DeskFlyer, on 01/17/2008, -10/+5Humility is dead, unfortunately.

- CiXeL, on 01/17/2008, -1/+2youre going to relearn it pretty quick as the economy falls apart.
- esbern1, on 01/17/2008, -20/+6the guy who wrote this is a big fat guy named David Bohl. You must read a really succesful life to be overweight and try to tell people how they should live. its like those guys who give stock tips but are bad enough at the stock market that they still have to make money selling their *****.
Here's a picture of him: http://images5.squidoo.com/resize.php?filename=len ...- tdog138, on 01/17/2008, -0/+7Uhhh, what does his weight have to do with leading a happy/successful life? You should read the humility note- "thinking you are better than others or are superior to those around you."
- drummer1189, on 01/17/2008, -1/+5you are a ***** person
- Dural, on 01/17/2008, -5/+0optimistic, but still nice, regular dumblittleman candy :-)
- vervalsing, on 01/17/2008, -4/+6It's a little cliche, but true. Props.
- TheFiestyFaun, on 01/17/2008, -9/+3Who decides what a successful life is? and who decides what 20 qualities i will need?
- o5rob5o, on 01/17/2008, -10/+30i think a seven figure salary and a hot wife that thinks Philadelphia is a state would define a successful life.
- geometry, on 01/17/2008, -12/+7I agree. And if you look at the people who have that you'll find that they have the opposite 20 qualities. These 20 qualities sound like loser talk to me LOL
- physco827, on 01/17/2008, -0/+0She also has to look at the directory at the mall, see the you are here dot, and ask you how do they know?
- r00ts, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1What if they think Philadelphia is just a cream-cheese brand?
- Llanowar, on 01/17/2008, -8/+25Wow... This article nearly makes me puke.
- Jimgress, on 01/17/2008, -0/+17these are just guidelines....right?
- Zlorp, on 01/17/2008, -4/+39Why is it then that the most successful people do exactly the opposite of what this list says?
- ligyron, on 01/17/2008, -5/+4Because this list is for people that spend to much thing thinking and not enough time doing
- orbit1979, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1You have to think before you act. Some just do it more than others.
- kurtergad87, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Because the measure of success is arbitrary?
- ligyron, on 01/17/2008, -5/+4Because this list is for people that spend to much thing thinking and not enough time doing
- Mousefinger, on 01/17/2008, -7/+18In other words: don't be human.
- bluezinc, on 01/17/2008, -10/+8In other words, don't be a typical American.
- ithasfourtoes, on 01/17/2008, -4/+4yes! more cliche anti-americanism! bluezinc is original and special and really really intelligent!
- kirakun, on 01/17/2008, -7/+2I don't know who the ***** IDIOT was who dug you down, but that list does not describe any person in any point of history.
- Kurono, on 01/17/2008, -2/+3Jesus?
- h3lx, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1Would he do that?
- kirakun, on 01/17/2008, -4/+1Oh now I see who those ***** idiots who dig comments down are.

- tyywebb, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Here I am!
- bowe, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1I believe they are goals to strive towards. You might not hit all 20, but 5 is probably a good start.
- Kurono, on 01/17/2008, -2/+3Jesus?
- bluezinc, on 01/17/2008, -10/+8In other words, don't be a typical American.
- BigBallistix, on 01/17/2008, -5/+15Sounds like 20 ways to make 'other' peoples lives especially successful. Charity my arse.
- ligyron, on 01/17/2008, -3/+1Right. It's 20 ways to ensure the success of everyone else but you
- JonTheGoose, on 01/17/2008, -0/+25In other words, don't be a douche.
- tehjarvis, on 01/17/2008, -4/+4Sounds like a recipe to be walked all over.
- r00ts, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Between this article and the article yesterday from the same site (about how to break the "fight cycle" with your wife) I'm starting to think that dumblittleman written by angry women trying to brainwash men into being their slaves.
Then again, I could be wrong.

- fwonk, on 01/17/2008, -1/+12Buried because at least five or six of their 20 bulletins are the same thing.
No. 5 # Heartfelt. When you do something for someone, or they do something for you, let your thanks and emotion be openly and outwardly expressed towards them.
No. 8 # Personal integrity. Always follow your heartfelt values..
Are being sincere, honest, heartfelt and hearty all really that different? - FatLoser, on 01/17/2008, -7/+0This list is so god damned life changing and amazing. It literally changed my life in the 2 minutes since I finished reading it. Meh, my life sucks though so I don't really care. See, ever since I got busted by my parents for having porn on the computer (which wasn't mine) they made me talk to the priest. He was all "you need to show restraint" and I was like, whatever old man. I ***** on the floor of the church on my way out. All religious people are stupid anyway; if they could do something meaningful with their lives they wouldn't waste it preaching fairy tales. meh, i give up
- TheCasablancan, on 01/17/2008, -2/+1'Cause this is MY united states of whatever!
One time I was out and about cruising for a bruising when I met this fellow and he said to me "Yo dude! Does your mama know you're gay?" and I was like...Yo dude...Whatever!

- Claverhouse, on 01/17/2008, -3/+16No. 21. "One man with a gun can control 100 without one." Lenin.
- source1984, on 01/17/2008, -2/+0Till those 100 get one and overthrow the "one man with a gun"
- JohnFrum, on 01/17/2008, -2/+8What if #6 conflicts with #2?
For example, I don't really like people. Not particular people but people in general. I can't "Be someone who displays an honest, warm, and exuberant personality to those around them" and "Be genuine in what you do" at the same time.- allenu, on 01/17/2008, -0/+5Then, according to this list, you fail at life. Sorry.
- JohnFrum, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1And yet, I'm happy none the less.
- atdigg, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Try to surround yourself with people you do like. If you don't like ANY, sorry for you...
- JohnFrum, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1There are particular people that I like but then they are more than people to me, they are friends and family. I just have a hard time forcing myself to be "warm and exuberant" to all the other people out there, and that's ok. I know who I am and I'm in a good place with that.
- tyywebb, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Ha and you have Jesus as your avatar, awesome.
- allenu, on 01/17/2008, -0/+5Then, according to this list, you fail at life. Sorry.
- PiKo85, on 01/17/2008, -1/+3Thankfully the internet has numbed me to everything on that list.
- allenu, on 01/17/2008, -1/+4Who died and made this writer an expert on what makes a successful life?
- alibaig413, on 01/17/2008, -1/+3umm money, money, and oh yea more money
- DarkRappey, on 01/17/2008, -5/+9"Ayn Rand rejects altruism, the view that self-sacrifice is the moral ideal. She argues that the ultimate moral value, for each human individual, is his or her own well-being. Since selfishness (as she understands it) is serious, rational, principled concern with one's own well-being, it turns out to be a prerequisite for the attainment of the ultimate moral value. For this reason, Rand believes that selfishness is a virtue."
http://www.objectivistcenter.org/cth--406-FAQ_Virt ...
Sorry I'm not taking the time to write something of my own, and more to the point, but you get the idea...- afeitarse, on 01/17/2008, -5/+1Yup, that's a pretty good summary of the conservative mind-set.
- Versh, on 01/17/2008, -1/+2"Altruism. Think of others without thinking of yourself. Do good things for people without expecting something in return for yourself. " Ehhhhh, the author is hopefully referring to being benevolent, not altruistic-- there is no gain in altruism, only sacrifice for the sake of sacrifice. Besides, "to do good for people" one would need a reason to do so, because they find value in others, not because of some abstract duty. Thinking is volitional, not compulsory. There's nothing wrong with helping others, just as long as their deserving-- it has nothing to do with gratitude-- it should be about worth. Altruism is evil in this regard.
- DarkRappey, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Okay well I wanted to reply to all of you in the same context, so I'm going to misuse the reply system for a moment.
Don't mean to be redundant Versh, but thought I'd take the time to add on.
The rejection of altruism does not mean the rejection of helping others. It means that the helping of others should be to your benefit and happiness (for example taking care of your wife and family). This morality is human and logical; when derived from one's own reason it is set in intellectual stone - not frail like that of a morality based only on thoughtless acceptance of a religion or cultural standard.
If a morality is not strong, is not derived by reason and logic, it often breaks down in practical situations.
As Jimgress put it nicely:
"these are just guidelines....right?"
@afeitarse
I'm not going to bury you or anything, but what you're saying very ambiguous. If you don't take Versh's words into consideration it easy to assign a negative tone to the "virtue of selfishness," but this was not my intention at all. And, of course, conservative is well... ambiguous. If you mean a political philosophy based only on preserving the present condition then no, if you mean a philosophy that inherits morality from religious dogma than no. If you happen to mean Libertarianism then yes, in many ways Libertarianism is heavily influenced by, or at least similar to, Objectivism.
(libertarians ftw)
(Ayn Rand hates Libertarians yata yata)
@ The_Dude
dare I say ad ad hominem?
- DarkRappey, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Okay well I wanted to reply to all of you in the same context, so I'm going to misuse the reply system for a moment.
- KidVicious, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2"Yes, at first I was happy to be learning how to read. It seemed exciting and magical, but then I read this: Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. I read every last word of this garbage, and because of this piece of s**t, I am never reading again!"
/South Park - The_Dude, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Yeah Ayn Rand is great...when you're 17...and listening to Neal Peart the greatest drummer in the world!
- LokitheComplex, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Running your life on selfishness? What could possibly go wrong?
- Singularitarian, on 01/17/2008, -1/+2What about being hard working? Being ambitious? Those are two of the most important qualities a person needs to be successful.
- fauxXenophanes, on 01/17/2008, -0/+5Listis Rejectum
- RavagesOfTime, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2Well, of course people can't follow these ideas. They're too busy saying that they can't follow these ideas. I mean, trying to self-improve went out decades ago, when we all decided to lie in our own muck proudly.
- joot2112, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1I don't know about "humility" -- all the most successful people I know are cocky as hell. I think some of them succeeded because they convinced others to buy into their inflated self opinions.
- beaverfetus, on 01/17/2008, -0/+12#21 Originality- avoid triteness in your endeavors, particularly those involving the creation of stupid lists
- Enternal, on 01/17/2008, -0/+0Hmm... perhaps it mean being successful life as a good person and has nothing to do with money. It seems that everyone things that it relates to money. Live a successful life (rich or pass by every day) and being successful (poor but a good person) is different things. Because everything these days relies on money so people will throw out everything for money which is why this list is useless now. The ideal way of being successful is not living the American dream and living by good ideals or being a good person is ***** when money is not involved?
- darklights, on 01/17/2008, -0/+0I agree. Money != success in my book - success for me = comfortable life, good friends, good times.
Sure with money you can have good times, but I'm sure it can get you into a lot of trouble too, and cause stress.
Sure you can have a comfortable life too with money, but at what cost? That money wont earn itself.
And all the people I know who have serious money havent had what I would call good friends. More like hanger-ons looking for free stuff.- darklights, on 01/17/2008, -0/+0Of course if you can have all the above and money too, thats pretty successfull :)
- darklights, on 01/17/2008, -0/+0I agree. Money != success in my book - success for me = comfortable life, good friends, good times.
- Yawgmoth, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1#9 is so wrong. You shouldn't hold fast in your beliefs. While you shouldn't constantly be changing your life view, your opinions and believes should be pliable and able to change, otherwise you're just going to keep thinking the same stupid things over and over again and never actually bettering yourself.
- gudnbluts, on 01/17/2008, -2/+1#22 Salma Hayek
- detales, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1SUCCESS AT LAST
- wildchild77, on 01/17/2008, -2/+1Wow. I submitted a much better, less cliche list months ago:
http://digg.com/health/Advice_for_the_Living - TomRitchford, on 01/17/2008, -1/+6What a *terrible* list. 1, 2, 4 and 5 are teh eq=al, as are 8 and 9.
The very worst part -- there's nothing there involving "planning" or "consequences to actions" or "thinking ahead" -- or "loving art and music" or "appreciating thought and science" or even "respecting nature". It's all dumb new-age stuff.
"Modesty and humbleness will leave a far more ever lasting impact on people than trying to show off."
Name one modest or humble historical person. I can name a few, a lot of them Zen monks and that sort of thing. If you want people to pay attention to you, you need to be clear and direct. Modesty and humbleness are impediments to this.
This is terrible!!!! Dugg down!- gudnbluts, on 01/17/2008, -1/+0"What a *terrible* list. 1, 2, 4 and 5 are teh eq=al, as are 8 and 9."
And courtesy and civility at 12 and 13. - drummer1189, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1john lennon, mahatma ghandi, bob marley.
off the top of my head
- gudnbluts, on 01/17/2008, -1/+0"What a *terrible* list. 1, 2, 4 and 5 are teh eq=al, as are 8 and 9."
- vitriolicRx, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2This is more like a list to be successful in the afterlife.
- topgigmedia, on 01/17/2008, -2/+6If you put everyone else first - you finish last. This negates this article's theory or 20 guidelines for being successful... That is of course, unless the goal is to be successful at failure.
- iStunT, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3Success is how high bounce back up after you fall.
- drummer1189, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2this guy must have been stoned
- zephc, on 01/17/2008, -0/+5I'm at least 10 times more humble than the rest of you.
- derek20cali, on 01/17/2008, -1/+6Fluffy feel-good *****.
- calderson, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3So THIS is how Bush got elected... :-|
- dano420, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1I'm not one to take internet sites seriously but I found it to be very sound advice
- source1984, on 01/17/2008, -1/+2Oh just follow a religion.
- HaSatan, on 01/17/2008, -0/+0You wrote to me once, listing the four chief virtues: Wisdom, justice, fortitude and temperance. As I read the list, I knew I had none of them. But I have other virtues, father. Ambition. That can be a virtue when it drives us to excel. Resourcefulness, courage, perhaps not on the battlefield, but... there are many forms of courage. Devotion, to my family and to you. But none of my virtues were on your list.
- stevecam22, on 01/17/2008, -0/+0who wrote that list? ron paul?
- easy2panic, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Pff... 20? What a rip-off, I got 12:
Trustworthy,
Loyal,
Helpful,
Friendly,
Courteous,
Kind,
Obedient,
Cheerful,
Thrifty,
Brave,
Clean,
Reverent. - 8347, on 01/17/2008, -1/+1What about 20 Qualities for men?
- futureisours, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1in other words.. don't work at wall street or as a banker.
