50 Habits of "Naturally Thin" People
rd.com — #24. Eat like a kid. You don't have to give up that quick lunch if you order smaller portions: Instead of a Quarter Pounder with Cheese and large fries, opt for the cheeseburger Happy Meal. You can even play with the toy. Saves 390 calories.

Captain Lee 'Apollo' Adama: I have no idea.
Lt. Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace: Neither do I! You're the CAG, act like one.
Captain Lee 'Apollo' Adama: What the hell does that mean?
Lt. Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace: It means that you're still acting like you're everyone's best friend. We're not friends, you're the CAG. "Be careful out there"? - guillebravo6, on 05/30/2008, -5/+11There is some great tips or habits here. I think you have to make a lifestyle choice to be thin, just as you do to be overweight.
Make the choice!- smartazz, on 05/31/2008, -0/+2Fat it is!
- bdbr, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1If you look at what they're "substituting", its a daily routine of consuming brownies & cookies in between fattening meals with dessert, with no exercise. Did anyone NOT know that's not healthy?
- pentupentropy, on 05/30/2008, -7/+90I'm "naturally thin" and I eat like 5 whopper juniors at a time. I put hot sauce on most everything, that might help. I think gluttony is my worst sin. I eat as long as my body will let me in the presence of good food. Still weigh about a buck sitty.
- rukeypoo, on 05/31/2008, -1/+27Same. My coworkers hate me because I just eat terribly unhealthy food everyday at lunch and they are stuck with salads and lean cuisine.

- fugazied, on 05/31/2008, -0/+18Your metabolism will slow a bit as you get older. If you still eat like that after 35 and stay thin then you are pretty lucky. At 20 a lot of people can eat a lot of be thin.
- blackinthmiddle, on 05/31/2008, -0/+7Well that's the real key. I read this article, and the gist is to stay active, which is obvious but not the real key. The real key is to keep your metabolism burning. One way to not lose muscle and try to put some on. Every pound of muscle you gain needs 50 calories a day to function. Gain 10 pounds, burn 500 calories a day, even on days you're just being a couch potato. People who are thin aren't eating grains and crap like that!
- davidjunit, on 05/31/2008, -1/+25Exactly. I read half-way through the list and thought to myself, "wtf is this *****, I never do this crap" and I eat junk all the time. I'll probably die of a heart attack before obesity kicks in.
- Froejam, on 05/31/2008, -5/+20***** you.
- moonguidex, on 05/31/2008, -1/+3yeah, i think there's something about hot sauce, i eat a lot too, and most of it drowned in hot sauce. I weigh 180, but at 6ft and 30 years old, combined with all the food I eat, i feel pretty good...
- Monk22, on 06/02/2008, -0/+1also 6ft, 180lbs. on a steady diet of buffalo chicken for a while now. maybe we found the secret. mudbutt.
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/31/2008, -0/+9Conversely, I walk an average of 5 miles a day and eat steamed broccoli, rice, chicken, spinach and the occasional subway sandwich. I cant loose weight.
- Big-Pat, on 05/31/2008, -0/+12There's your problem: Subway. Most subs are so bad for you, unless you're getting a 6in turkey, veggie, or oven roasted chicken breast with no cheese, no sauce on wheat bread. You have no idea how many people come in and get a footlong BMT w/bacon, extra cheese, 2-3 sauces, oil and vinegar.
Don't even get me started on people who order a "$5 footlong " that used to cost less than $5.- lamiaconfitor, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1lol I know the bread is bad... I go after the roasted chicken. occasionally bacon.
- djk21108, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1So bad for you is a bit of an overstatement. Even with cheese a turkey sandwhich has a pretty low glycemic index rating. Substitute for the whole wheat roll and you're eating a very healthful meal.
- uracre, on 05/31/2008, -0/+3You know every body type is different and how you store fat, digest carbs and proteins are as well. Walking may not be your fit exercise. Try variety exercises, make changes to your diet, and find what is best for you. Also, being skinny doesn't necessarily mean you will be healthy or look good. Set reasonable goals for yourself first, such as to tone your muscles, maybe doing a little weight training etc...
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/31/2008, -0/+3that is true, also keep in mind that a technically overweight individual who is active is usually more healthy then an individual who is of the correct weight* then an individual who is underweight/of weight and inactive.
*as defined in the 'BMI'
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/31/2008, -0/+3that is true, also keep in mind that a technically overweight individual who is active is usually more healthy then an individual who is of the correct weight* then an individual who is underweight/of weight and inactive.
- tidu, on 05/31/2008, -2/+3Wow subway? I'm surprised, you're not even eating anything. They only serve Air sandwiches with a side of dust.
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1you know, allot of the other responses were more judgmental, but a lot less stupid.
- Big-Pat, on 05/31/2008, -0/+12There's your problem: Subway. - psychotron, on 05/31/2008, -0/+4I hate you. You and my brother in law. He eats like a pig and doesn't gain a pound. I as much as look at a slice of bread and I gain a pound.
- gryphon50, on 05/31/2008, -0/+2lots of people eat that bad when they're teens and get away with it. All of the extra calories are used to just grow upwards. But it will catch up with you in the end. I don't see many thirty year olds that can eat like that and stay thin.
- itsradBrad, on 05/31/2008, -1/+3You will become obese later in life if you keep that up. Well, assuming you don't die from cardiovascular disease before then.
- BillDoor, on 05/31/2008, -0/+5What rubbish. I'm naturally thin and don't do any of those things.
Anybody who does follow these steps is not naturally thin. They are dieting and working out.- scotticus, on 05/31/2008, -2/+1The people I've known who are naturally thin tend to eat small low fat meals. Most of them can't digest high fat foods very well, so they stay away from them naturally. They also get sick when they overeat, so instead of 3 large meals a day, they end up eating 5-6 smaller snacks.
- dmoore764, on 05/31/2008, -0/+5Yeah, I don't think any people who are "naturally" thin do these retarded exercises regularly
- erossmu, on 06/01/2008, -0/+0@Scotticus
While I'm not naturally thin, I manage to retain a thin physique. I'm only 20 years old currently, but am getting into the habit of being conscious of what I put into my system and typically staying away from fast food and fried foods. I'm also completely staying away from beef as well. After awhile you just lose complete interest in eating those types of foods and even further so, whenever I do eat the random fried food or beef product, I usually get really sick. So you end up not having an appetite at all for those types of foods and inevitably it shows.
My philosophy on staying healthy is when you're at a young age--where it isn't a problem to eat whatever you want--that's the MOST crucial point to get into the habit of eating right and getting into the daily habit of exercising. This way, when it inevitably becomes a problem, your lifestyle is already prepared for those changes when your metabolism slows down.
I also believe in eating small amounts of food throughout the whole day and eating until I'm at a good point, not when I'm completely stuffed. That's another issue I see with a lot of my friends... they will eat until they are so full they feel bloated. Eating until you're at a good spot is another really helpful tip to eating much less than you're used to.
- rheaume, on 05/31/2008, -0/+2Was the same way, still am in some ways and it caught up to me in my late 20's, until then
I was living on my own, binge eating, never gained a pound and then, bam, slapped on a good 40 pounds.
Funny enough, i dont gain more weight but sadly Im overweight for my frame now so itll take some work.
Got a lol about the whoppers though - coxykelly, on 06/23/2008, -0/+0You might be able to help. I'm looking for people just like you - you aint what you eat, or rather you eat what you like and don't put on weight. If you fancy finding out more about my little project, message me.
- rukeypoo, on 05/31/2008, -1/+27Same. My coworkers hate me because I just eat terribly unhealthy food everyday at lunch and they are stuck with salads and lean cuisine.
- rawg, on 05/30/2008, -3/+27Some good suggestions that don't require a lot of sacrifice:
40. Make it bacon At the diner, order three slices of crisp bacon instead of two sausage links, and pat off the extra grease. Saves 90
48. Fix your fries Rather than asking for medium fries, get an order of onion rings (8 to 9 rings). Saves 60
Bacon and onion rings, here I come.- Laminarcissus, on 05/31/2008, -2/+30Screw it, I'm having six pieces of bacon and an extra large onion rings and losing weight twice as fast.
- drog, on 05/31/2008, -0/+3You forgot sex. Bacon + onion rings + sex = lose weight....sweet!
- mellenger, on 05/31/2008, -0/+3We need a name for this diet.. the SOB diet?
- dleesgeetar, on 05/30/2008, -1/+23all really practical tips, i prefer to lean towards the exercise and less on the nutrition management, personally i think you got to eat well to be happy, and being happy keeps the stress down and your body in better condition, also makes you more likely to exercise
- Daniel591992, on 05/31/2008, -5/+4And in return, exercising makes you more happy. Soon enough, you'll be gay!
- stage88, on 05/30/2008, -12/+4There is no such thing as "naturally thin". Sooner or later, your metabolism will slow down, your kids will stress the hell out of ya, your wife will divorce you and the kilos will pile in.
- claudia7950, on 05/30/2008, -0/+5The naturally thin exist: my mother (64) and my sister (38) eat like the end of the world was due tomorrow, still they are both natural thin and *grrr* how I envy them. I just watch food and kilos come to me running happily!
- spammishking, on 05/31/2008, -1/+7I've been at the same weight for 10 years now, and I've gone a few years without exercising and overeating, and a few years of daily exercising and watching what I eat and I always weigh the same. Naturally thin is genetic, it's not a habit, so hahaha tubby I'm thin without trying
- TheGuruStud, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1LOL. Woooooo!
Dug for calling fatties tubbies.
You wouldn't happen to have any studly Belgian genes, now would you?

- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 05/31/2008, -1/+3Methinks stage88 is just pissy that they can't lose weight :)
- stage88, on 05/31/2008, -0/+3Yes i am :(
(damn you "naturally thin" people...)
- stage88, on 05/31/2008, -0/+3Yes i am :(
- otbeverly, on 05/31/2008, -1/+0Are these kilos you speak of full of cocaine? At age 34, I've found that the thinnest people I know my age all have a huge coke problem.
- blackinthmiddle, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1While your metabolism slows with age, you can do things to keep it burning fast. I'm going to be 36 this year and still take weight gain shakes to keep my weight up. My wife gets so angry when she sees me trying to *gain* weight! I work out with weights and I'm about 215lbs at 6'0" (at probably 12% body fat). If I stopped lifting weights and drinking the extra calories, I'd be down to 175lbs in less than six months. I wouldn't have to do a thing more than that. No exercising. No crazy diets.
- emt1451, on 05/31/2008, -4/+41If you are trying to lose weight you should never eat fast food. Actually, nobody should ever eat fast food...
- FlynnRocks, on 05/31/2008, -0/+4What did you say to me?
- Haoie, on 05/31/2008, -0/+2But it tastes so good.
Why not a guilty pleasure now and then? - omgbanana, on 05/31/2008, -1/+2When I dropped 35 pounds it was 50% of my food. I used it as a source of protein. I do not have a car and meat would spoil on the walk home from the grocery store.
It's not fast food. It's what you choose and portion size. A triple patty burger with mayo and 3 slices of cheese with a large fry and milkshake two times a day isn't going to work. A chicken sandwich with no mayo will.
There is nothing out there that is going to make your waist explode. The problem is what the US thinks is a proper portion size. Most sit-down restaurant meals should be had over two or three sittings. Not just one! - emt1451, on 06/01/2008, -0/+1Just because you can lose weight on it doesn't mean it is healthy for you. Do you think you're getting any sort of nutrition out of that mayoless chicken sandwich from McDonald's?
- FlynnRocks, on 05/31/2008, -0/+4What did you say to me?
- Picard102, on 05/31/2008, -2/+127This title is misleading. These are not habits of naturally thin people, but of people trying to lose weight.
- insomniasystems, on 05/31/2008, -1/+1Agreed!, i'm thin and i abuse the ***** out of my body... with out meth...
- Bersy, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1"Excercise your buttcheeks when in traffic"... somehow I don't think many of these are ANYone's habit (ok, there are some weirdos out there) just more fruitcake crap from Reader's Digest...
- bdbr, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I think they just mean people that we might think are "naturally thin", but are actually thin because of good eating and exercise habits.
- Revolutionista, on 05/31/2008, -2/+11I just drink water and put dirt on the tip of my tongue.

- santaliqueur, on 05/31/2008, -17/+8These are 50 things that naturally thin people do, not 50 things you need to do in order to be naturally thin. I know, it's 4th grade reading comprehension, but try to follow along.
- Mononuclear, on 05/31/2008, -0/+13No, naturally thin people are just that.. naturally thin. They don't do any of these things. Most naturally thin people eat like horses and don't gain weight because of their natural body chemistry.
These are things people who aren't naturally thin but want to be thin do to stay thin. - chanop, on 05/31/2008, -0/+5I'm naturally thing, and barely do any of that *****
- Mononuclear, on 05/31/2008, -0/+13No, naturally thin people are just that.. naturally thin. They don't do any of these things. Most naturally thin people eat like horses and don't gain weight because of their natural body chemistry.
- tibs, on 05/31/2008, -1/+5So what do I care about the habits of naturally thin people if these said habits
are not important to being naturally thin?
Just sayin'... - Jo9100, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1"quotation marks"
- thesonofdarwin, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1I do some of those things, but not to stay thin. I can eat a large pizza every night for a week, or eat once every three days and I won't lose or gain anything. I've weighed 125 for the past 12 years, no abnormal medical condition.
But, being thin doesn't mean one is healthy. So when I get up in the morning I exercise. I eat healthy foods. I create more things to do at work to keep me active.
#22... I mean come on, if you can actually see the pool of fat sitting on your food waiting to be shoved down your gullet, you get no sympathy if you can't take 2 seconds to blot it off. It doesn't make the food taste any different.
Common sense is now considered a "naturally thin" habit? That sums up all 50. - dstz, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1Ever heard of quotation marks? are you "naturally dense"?
- santaliqueur, on 05/31/2008, -17/+8These are 50 things that naturally thin people do, not 50 things you need to do in order to be naturally thin. I know, it's 4th grade reading comprehension, but try to follow along.
- AntiGravityHero, on 05/31/2008, -5/+55This is ***** stupid. I'm 30, "naturally thin" @ 6'1", 140 and can pound down Quarter Pounders and bacon sandwiches all day without gaining an ounce. My cholesterol levels, on the other hand...
You either have the genes or you don't.- IllBeBack, on 05/31/2008, -3/+6Worry more about your blood pressure levels, not your cholesterol. The whole high cholesterol is bad thing is largely a myth.
- antonio97b, on 05/31/2008, -4/+4Um tell that to my father who died of a heart attack with low blood pressure and high colesterol. I don't think you should be doling out that kind of advice because you're not a doctor.
- IllBeBack, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1While I am sorry that your father died of a heart attack, I have actually done extensive research relating to fasting cholesterol levels in humans because my family has a history of high cholesterol.
I have found time and again that the studies relating to this that are on the side of "low cholesterol is good" are very flawed and that the correlation suggested by them is simply not there, and certainly no causative effect can be drawn from these poorly-done studies.
I do not think that your father's high cholesterol is the factor that caused his death.
You can look at the following site that IS published by a doctor to see what I am talking about:
http://www.ravnskov.nu/cholesterol.htm
- IllBeBack, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1While I am sorry that your father died of a heart attack, I have actually done extensive research relating to fasting cholesterol levels in humans because my family has a history of high cholesterol.
- blackinthmiddle, on 05/31/2008, -1/+4I see that IllBeBack is getting dugg down, but he's actually right. There are many different components that make up your total cholesterol. HDL and LDL are only two parts. With tests that we currently have in place, we miss 8 out of 10 people who are heart attack candidates. I'll see if I can find a link. The point is, doctors really don't understand cholesterol's role as much as they'd have you believe.

- Gunite, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1I agree. You have to find what your natural body type is and just go with the flow instead of constantly fighting it... as long as you take care of yourself with a good diet.

- RebeL5K, on 05/31/2008, -0/+2That's not true at all. If they're "naturally" fat they can eat little or lots and will still be fat because... it's their nature.
- dmoore764, on 05/31/2008, -1/+1If you actually watch people who say they can't lose weight by eating less, you will often see they they are not actually eating less. The truth is, almost everyone is genetically pre-dispositioned to be fat on a standard American diet, so the people who are skinny often have tendencies to eat less fatty foods (because of taste preference), or don't snack often.

- vuthy, on 05/31/2008, -1/+15I guarantee you that no "naturally thin" people actually do these things. I'm naturally thin, and 90% of that is due to good genes. It also helps that I walk everywhere (which also includes carrying heavy items back home) and don't eat junk food, though I eat A LOT. It's not that I eat healthy; I love bacon, ribs, sausages, fries, Guinness, noodles, etc., but I'm more likely to eat freshly cooked stuff than to buy a bag of chips or a box of Oreos.

- Gunite, on 05/31/2008, -0/+3Yes, except I wouldn't say it's due to "good" genes. There are disadvantages. Clearly a person with an excellent diet who can store excess fat will do better in certain environments.

If people can fast for weeks at a time drinking nothing but water, you certainly can go with less than 3 meals per day, or 3 smaller meals per day. Think about it. Are you really starving, or is your mind working against you because of the bad eating habits you've been raised on?
Eating as much as we do three times a day isn't natural and the human body is not designed to cope with it.- saraequalswin, on 05/31/2008, -0/+4Some would argue that skipping meals is part of the reason America is overweight. 19. Carry some weight When you're grocery shopping or running errands, wear a backpack with a 5-or 10-pound bag of sugar inside to increase resistance and burn more calories. Add purchases to your load as it becomes easier. Burns 20 (for an hour of errands)
---
20. Get stopped at the door on your way out of the grocery store wanting to know what's in your bag. Burns 10
21. Lift sugar out of backpack. Burns 10
22. Resist arrest. Burns 200- LBobRife, on 05/31/2008, -0/+14Not only that, but having a 10 lb bag of sugar around at all times cannot be good for your diet.

Weight training is good for many reasons, not least if you're used to carrying several kilos on your back you're liable to be able to drag the guard who just tackled you further than you could before. - Fizban140, on 05/31/2008, -9/+8Heres the only one needed, man the ***** up and get some self control. If you want to lose weight eat healthy and exercise, thats it there is no secret.
- Grolsch, on 05/31/2008, -6/+1Its very simple. WALK. People in Europe walk alot and use public transportation, so do people in major cities like NYC. I live in TX right now but I used to live in Russia so you might guess I am skinny lol but what I've noticed is that alot of people around here are lazy and would take their car ANYWHERE, its a bad habit. So next time take a walk to the store, gas station or even park ( I've seen people take their cars to the local park thats one block away...) 20 minutes of walking will not kill you. Eating healthy might be a plus but even if you like fast food you will burn that burger quick by simple exercise/walking.
- IllBeBack, on 05/31/2008, -0/+5I'm sorry, but walking is not the greatest exercise for weight loss. If you're not doing any exercise at all, then walking is a good start, but the number of kcals burned is disappointingly low compared with other exercises such as swimming, biking, elliptical trainers, and especially HIIT versions of these. What, no running, you ask? No, because running is far too much impact and you will wind up with early-onset arthritis and chronic back pain from running all of the time.
For weight loss with walking, the time commitment of at least 1 hour per day is needed to get any appreciable results, and most people will not have the discipline or motivation to consistently do that.
So, it's not simple. I wish that naturally thin people would stop saying that it's simple, because that is simply not true.- Grolsch, on 06/01/2008, -1/+0Another excuse.... well dont walk then, start running or swimming... *****.... as simple as you can make it to be people will still find something to complain, compare and argue.
I was walking for hours when I had to and I never thought walking is a less of an exercise so I shouldnt be walking then because its pointless?

- agent76, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1I don't see why everyone dug this down, I just got back from living in the UK and I was walking 6-10 miles a day. People in North America take their cars and use them for everything, I enjoy walking and have done a lot since I've returned. It's a great form of exercise. Eating healthy is very important as well but you seriously have to make permanent life changes if you want to lose weight and keep it off.

- bigbenorr, on 05/31/2008, -3/+1I can't understand why everyone is obsessed with being thin. I weigh about 230 lbs. and I am always struggling to PUT ON weight, or at least maintain 230. There have been times in the past when I've dropped like 10-20 lbs. and I am always weaker, slower and generally less athletic during those periods. If people would stop focusing on exercises/diets that are supposed to make them look good and actually tried to improve their body's performance they would find themselves to be much healthier, even though it would not make them look like a model. and to all you thin attractive people out their, I would bet you money that even though I may not look as good as you, I am probably faster, stronger, more agile, and most likely I can beat you at many sports.

have you seen olympic long distance runners? they're as thin as a pencil.- bigbenorr, on 05/31/2008, -2/+1and they run slow...for long distances. Obviously my stamina could never match theirs, since it takes far less energy to move their bodies, but I think my stamina is respectable for my size. - RebeL5K, on 05/31/2008, -1/+2That's great that you could beat me at many sports but being as I don't really play sports, that makes me better than you at the OTHER 95% of life. You go play football, I'll go get laid.

- Amadeus2490, on 05/31/2008, -1/+5I'm "naturally skinny," and I can tell you: being a "hardgainer" is NOT fun; it took me 8 months to put on 10 lbs, and I can eat 3,500 calories a day and not gain a single pound over 130. If I tried to weightlift, my metabolism would go even HIGHER, and the muscles would burn the little fat I have on my body just to sustain itself.
Is that REALLY what everybody wants?- ez12a, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1i know what you mean. I'm 5'1" and weighed at 145...after first year of college dorm food i was only at 150, but I have been lifting so that bumped me up to 155. No matter what I eat I can't get past 155.
must've been those 4 years in XC and long distance track/field events all in high school. - sweetholymosiah, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1Lazy! I would tell people that line all the time about how working out just doesn't make a difference for me, I'm just skinny! I switched to free weights for a summer, and actually strained myself regularly... and amazingly enough put on some weight. I stopped doing THAT long ago, I'm back to 135 lbs. WEIRD.
- Perplexion, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1I'm probably the definition of a hard-gainer, I've been skinny pretty much my entire life and I can almost guarentee I'm skinnier than you are yourself. Weight lifting has been the only way I've found of really gaining weight. After lifting with the following advice I've found from various sources I've gained 14 pounds in two months so thus far it's working pretty well.
I suggest the following:
1. rest more days between workouts (muscle builds during rest not workouts, less is definitely more)
2. take a protein supplement immediately after working out and each day you rest as well (whey protein is the best)
3. do workouts that target multiple muscle groups (squats, dead lift, bench press, etc)
4. keep your sets and reps to a minimum, gaining muscle mass is about raising the weight you lift (sets increase strength, reps increase endurance, raise the weight when it gets easy to complete your workout and you stop seeing weight gain)
5. start with a low weight to begin with and make each rep last for around 4 seconds ie. two seconds lifting up, 2 seconds lowering (it's more important to do the exercise correctly and at the right tempo than it is to incorrectly lift a high weight and get very little benefit)
6. get a scale if you don't already have one (seeing your progress is probably the best motivator there is)
Hope this helps :)
PS: I'm 6'3" so if you're somewhat shorter you'll probably not gain as much weight as me but it should be greater than what you've tried before and proportionately I hope you make the same or even greater progress than me :)

- ROW3BO4T, on 05/31/2008, -0/+5Is it that really that hard to exercise? Nothing is more relaxing than running 5 to 10 miles in the evening. If you enjoy exercise it's not hard to do it and it beats TV. You just need to find something you like.
- lolgamoff, on 05/31/2008, -0/+2exactly. I've started to do 200 crunches and 15-20 pushups a night and I feel very relaxed before hitting the sack. Helps me sleep better too. Get a small routine going and keep it up, you'll be surprised at how well it works. I've lost 12 pounds doing this along with a little healthier eating here and there. Builds muscle, too.
- TheMachine1, on 05/31/2008, -0/+2My theory is for people to overcome the hardwiring telling them exercise is pointless they need more incentives. Like walking to a store and buying needed items instead of merely just walking no where.
