- edwartica, on 10/10/2007, -7/+8Ick! Starbucks? Over raosted, over produced coffee-esque tripe!
- wiggles, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Some of us like our coffee dark roasted. If I go to the local roaster who under roasts his beans, the coffee tastes like I'm drinking pureed string beans.
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6No Starbucks coffee is over roasted to disguise the crappy beans that they use. The darker the roast the less of the original character of the bean is present in the roast. However even for a dark roast starbucks generally sucks. Yes they're are better than 90% of the dirty-water you can buy at places like dunkin-donuts, but that isn't saying much. I home roast and love to make a good dark roast. But I use really good beans and even in a dark roast you can really taste the difference. Plus beans should be consumed between 24hrs-1wk of the roast, how long to do you think starbucks keeps those beans in storage before they make it to the grinder?
Starbucks is okay at best, and there dark roasts are nothing to get excited about.- BESTenemy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2"Original character?" You sound like a salesperson.
I drink coffee. I'm hooked on it, but who cares, to me it's just dark liquid I pour down my hole. Big deal. Just one of the infinite number of things we consume (and we can eat or drink pretty much everything on this planet). Even if it's poisonous or too solid to chew, we'll find a way to grind or fry it till it's safe for consumption.
Perfectly blended, roasted to perfection, top grade, high class carbon molecule crap. Can't live without it.
- BESTenemy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2"Original character?" You sound like a salesperson.
- L0g1X, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Coffee is coffee. Just because Starbucks isn't the best, doesn't mean it's so gross it makes you "ick". Most people aren't so picky about their drinks. If I gave you a taste test of water in different bottles, you probably be able to pick out which one taste best even though they're all just tap water. Why? Because you're just pretending it taste better. Really, they all taste the same to you but you like to brag about how you can tell the difference. Just like how you say starbucks coffee is gross when really, it taste pretty much the same as other coffee places (within price range).
- Bajeda, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Starbucks is incredibly overrated, not to mention overpriced.
- TSorenson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Starbucks is the McDonalds of coffee. Now, where's my Tanzanian Peaberry...

- edwartica, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I never have either! I don't even use a cell phone behind the wheel. Granted, I use automobiles a lot less than most people because they're bad for the enviroment, but still...

- mjl5629, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8First off, I drink massive amounts of coffee straight out of the pot. Regardless, I'm starting to get skeptical about all of the pro-caffeine stories floating around. Let's get serious, coffee is addictive. That isn't a good thing.
Sounds like "the Merchants of Death" from the movie "Thank You for Smoking" have found a new job.- wiggles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Just because it's addictive doesn't mean it's bad for you. Nicotine isn't necessarily bad for you, it's all of the other crap in the cigarette that will kill you.
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1While I agree that addiction != bad for you, nicotine itself is a good enough reason to quite smoking: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotine#Toxicology
- wiggles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Just because it's addictive doesn't mean it's bad for you. Nicotine isn't necessarily bad for you, it's all of the other crap in the cigarette that will kill you.

This week caffine is good for you, last week it wasn't.

- Minishark, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Ah, yes, but now we have to argue over what constitutes a moderate amount...
- CedEx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Then we'll hear of arguments like "Oh.. hey now, that's too moderate", or "That's just not moderate enough."
The world will never be happy.
- CedEx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Then we'll hear of arguments like "Oh.. hey now, that's too moderate", or "That's just not moderate enough."
- kingrooster, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17This is good news! I smoke pot for it's anti lung cancer properties, drink alcohol for it's anti heart disease properties and now I can claim I drink coffee for it's anti-liver cancer properties! I might just live forever!
- krnldmp, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Yay for burnt bean water! But stay away from toast, potato chips, and grilled meat. In those special cases the char is carcinogenic. But, beans you can burn all you want. Very healthy.
Now give me my 6 bucks a pound for the cheap *****.- krnldmp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You want the dark roast, right?
- archlich, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16$ for a pound of cheap stuff? That's pretty expensive. Unless it's that instant coffee... or decaffeinatied
- JonnyTrombone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Dugg for this: " This caffeine was coupled with the mouse equivalent of a voluntary exercise program, which involved placing a running wheel in the cage."
- victorpeceno, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Good news
but I hear the same several years ago - wcw573, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0This will be an exciting news for my sister and niece who are coffee addict :-) As for me, for the sake of my skin, I'll start drinking coffee .... :-) Thanks for sharing with us this new findings of coffee.
- Bajeda, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Moderate use isn't bad, but daily coffee consumption isn't a good thing, and neither is caffeine addiction.
Industry funded research anyone? I mean *****, the article referred to it as a "HAPPY ADDICTION", wtf??- wiggles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Can you offer any evidence that coffee is actually bad for you? Addiction may suck the money out of your pocket, but I've never heard of anyone with serious health problems from drinking too much coffee. Headaches from withdrawal? Simple solution -- don't stop drinking the stuff. The one possible exception would be those prone to heart and prostate problems who should stay away from caffeine for those reasons, but for normal, healthy individuals, I've never heard anything negative.
- Bajeda, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1^^^^ I just did a quick search so these may not be the best sources, but you get an idea. You can also find anecdotal reports of people who experienced severe caffeine addiction, which isn't pretty.

Basically everything in moderation. I personally don't like the effects of caffeine as it makes me less focused and too jittery, but I like the taste of good coffee (especially Arabic style).
One of the biggest reasons people quit drinking coffee is gastrointestinal problems, or worse, stomach ulcers. Sorry I can't remember where the source for that was.
- mt066, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i wasn't going to stop drinking coffee anyway, but this is encouraging.
- danep, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Your teeth, however, still hate your bleeding guts (no pun intended)

- townsendmerino, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4coffee in, code out
- jason469, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I don't get it. Caffeine is addictive and with-drawl gives some people headaches, so how much coffee are we talking about? 1 cup per day? we need guidelines. Wine is good for you, but wait red wine is better for you, it also kills your liver and a research has shown that it can trigger depression.
We need guidelines on exactly how much is good for us, don't just tell me wine is good, because I can drink half a bottle in one sitting. The same goes for coffee or anything else that has a positive/negative side (just about everything)- rrbest, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Just buy the product. That's all they're asking.
- kingrooster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well that's simple. Red wine is good for your heart, bad for your liver. Coffee is good for your liver, bad for your heart. Drink as much as you want, just make sure you balance it out. Problem solved!
- GiJoeBob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I love coffee so much I want to marry it.
- kodomosuki, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Crawling in my skin, etc.
- jason469, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Dunkin Donuts is way better than Starbucks. I hardly drink coffee anymore, but Dunkin Donuts beats out that over priced POS you call Starbucks. Maybe it's a New England (North Eastern U.S.) thing, but I think Donkin Donuts makes better coffee.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I don't understand. The Word of Wisdom says that coffee, tea, and wine are bad for me, yet multiple scientific studies say they're good for me. Can anyone explain this discrepancy?
- sundancekid503, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Moderation. Coffee, Tea and Wine can ALL be bad for your if you use them too much, and they can all give benefits if taken in the right amounts.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1But the Word of Wisdom doesn't advocate moderation. It forbids using any amount of these substances.
- sundancekid503, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1So, that's easy... the word of wisdom is wrong!
- o0joshua0o, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1But the Word of Wisdom doesn't advocate moderation. It forbids using any amount of these substances.
- jabberwolf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0It's called hormesis - somehow change in definition in the last 10 years but it means harmony/balance.
Not enough of something will be detrimental. Too much of it will be detrimental as well.
In moderation its beneficial!
- sundancekid503, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Moderation. Coffee, Tea and Wine can ALL be bad for your if you use them too much, and they can all give benefits if taken in the right amounts.
- Homerr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Meanwhile, my teeth are coffee-stained.
- CedEx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Try not swishing the coffee around in your mouth so much. Sip and swallow right away... don't gargle.
- slapthemonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1well i thought it was bad ohhhh is it good ?.......hmmmm maybe next month it will again be bad :P
- HolmWrecker, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1BS. I have NEVER drank a cup of coffee, ever. Tastes like crap, stains your teeth and gives you rotten breath.
My skin is just fine and my organs are all healthy as can be.
People here will believe anything. We as humans waste so much time and energy on totally useless things.
All the while many more important, pressing issues are at hand.- sundancekid503, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No one said that lack of coffee would make you un-healthy, just that coffee provides a small benefit. So you can't dismiss this as "BS" based purely on your own highly limited experiences.
- pacopaitz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I personally don't find it acceptable to let PNAS researchers play with small rodents.
BTW its pronounced "penis" - jabberwolf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0YES I love this news.

My liver and skin thank me!
Um...BRB my bladder doesnt! - sexydarin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It don't matter, you're still gonna die no matter what you eat or drink. Live merrily and eat what you want. The health nazis don't live any longer than the gluttons or smokers.
- winsall, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0dugg for justifying my favorite addiction!
- knowyourrights, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I'm addicted to food and water, and I love those addictions. It would suck not to be able to eat sushi, crepes, or drink cool spring water.
Yay for Addiction! - intheocean, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Don't worry non-coffee drinkers (like myself), it is still much healthier to not drink coffee.
- naturewoman56, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sorry, but half the stuff on WebMD is crap...caffeine has actually helped my migraines, (as it constricts blood vessels that are dilated during a migraine); that's why it's included in many painkillers. I enjoy it in moderation with no ill effects, as well as tea; both contain antioxidants, and give me an edge when I work out. (I don't drink it late at night.) So use common sense, and you'll be OK. The liver and skin effects are icing on the cake.
- laptopmama, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0It is nearly impossible to raise 2 kids without coffee.
