- desud3sudesu, on 07/06/2008, -6/+0I know. Diabeetus runs in my family, too. I am not sure why he spelled it "Diabetes." Diabeetus is how everyone on the net spells it so it must be right.
- Rotzooi, on 07/06/2008, -3/+10It would not be an epidemic if you STOPPED EATING SO GODDAMN MUCH.
- gavinhudson, on 07/06/2008, -1/+5It's serious problem, both type 1 and 2, so no it doesn't always have to do with eating too much.
- carpespasm, on 07/06/2008, -1/+2I would imagine that a mother's eating habits over the course of her life leading up to getting pregnant could leave her child more susceptible to type 1. No proof of it that I know of, but if there's been an increase in type 1 it would seem like it has to either be from people with type 1 living long enough to pass on the gene increasing the pool of people with it (something that never happened before insulin's discovery), or from people with some genetic predisposition to having the immune response against their pancreas triggered being more likely to have it triggered by higher sugar intake from the womb up. Just a thought.
- SandyEggo, on 07/06/2008, -2/+1Type 1 is caused by a virus. Type 2 is genetic.

- alapoet, on 07/05/2008, -4/+11I'm at risk for diabetes; it's on both my mom's and my dad's sides of the family. So thanks for this important info!
- earthforce1, on 07/05/2008, -1/+16Found out I was a type 1 diabetic out of the blue about 4 years ago. The symptoms became just too obvious to ignore anymore.
I had no risk factors and blame it on stress.- vault, on 07/05/2008, -1/+2What symptom made you finally get it checked out?
- earthforce1, on 07/06/2008, -1/+10Symptom(s) plural were
Towards the end I couldn't go more than an hour or two without gulping a litre of water. Blamed it on heat, and I always did drink a lot but it was even more than usual.
Waking 3x a night to go to the bathroom, then 4x, then 5x.... and be dying of thirst and drink another litre of water before going back to bed. Blamed it on stress + too much caffeine at first
Always feeling run down and sleepy. ( Blamed this on burnout )
Massive weight loss in a fairly short time Dropped a pants size in 2 months, I think about 10 kilograms?? Initially blamed this on stress + poor diet as well. Great for a crash diet, but the side effects suck.
Even then I was in denial - I just happened to know somebody who had gestational diabetes and still had her blood sugar tester so on a lark I tested myself. I thought the damned thing was broken - blood sugar was 24 mm/L (Normal is 4 to 7) If you do start seeing some of these symptoms, get to your doctor. It doesn't go away if you ignore it, and if I had ignored it much longer I would have been dead. I probably caused a lot of wear and tear to vulnerable areas of my body, but so far I haven't been hit with the 2ndary effects. (Kidneys/Eyes/Feet are easily damaged by high sugar levels) - vault, on 07/06/2008, -2/+4Yeah one of my friends has diabetes (type 2 though, not type 1) and he had a similar issue with thirst. I just wasn't sure if type 1 had different symptoms.
- bobman2007, on 07/06/2008, -2/+3I did exactly the same things too almost eight years ago, then I was diagnosed with Type 1. The disorder runs in my family. Is this the same case for you?
- cgjamj, on 07/06/2008, -1/+2Is yours Juvenile, or Adult onset, bobman? Adult onset (type 2) can definitely be hereditary, but not Juvenile. My wife was diagnosed with Juvenile at 23 (automatic type 1). She does have type 2 on her mom's side of the family, but Juvenile is attributed to an autoimmune deficiency response. It's basically bad luck. However, she is the oldest of 7 and was the only one who wasn't breast fed. There's a possible link there.
- rwac, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1earthforce1:
You should read up about benfotiamine/aminoguanidine. They help avoid the complications of diabetes. - bobman2007, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1cgjamj: I did say I was diagnosed with Type 1 didn't I? Also, Type 2 is not hereditary unlike most people think: Type 1 is. The genes for the autoimmune deficiency are passed on through a family.

Thanks! - CosmoKramer, on 07/06/2008, -11/+3Quit eating like ***** and your chance of diabetes will go down. Easy as that.
- earthforce1, on 07/06/2008, -1/+15True for Type 2, which covers 90% of cases. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune problem that has nothing to do with diet. (So says my endocrinologist) They are not sure what causes it, although it runs in families and some ethnic groups are at a higher risk factor. For some unknown reason, your immune system declares war on your pancreatic cells.
Type 2 can be improved or even eliminated by losing weight and watching what you eat. If you have Type 1, you are just screwed and it has nothing to do with your lifestyle - after you get it eating like ***** isn't even an option, unless you want to have a very short life span. You have to be somewhat rigorous with your diet. When guys bring in donuts and other treats to work I have to give it a pass. - Darthyoshiboy, on 07/06/2008, -0/+7Shame there's nothing to be done about Assholeitus.
Type I diabetes, as earthforce1 has noted, has nothing to do with what you eat. Not that this article specifies one or the other, but I hate it when people make the blanket statement, "You could have been fine if you had eaten better." - lolmacs, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2Learn about the disease you moronic prick. Type 1 is NOT controllable, its set on by a virus or hereditary. Type 2 is USUALLY for the most part avoidable thru diet and exercise
- WantToPlay, on 07/07/2008, -0/+0It's not what you eat that gives you diabetes. Maybe you should read up more about this problem before you open your mouth and stick your foot in it.

- Fangsinmybeard, on 07/06/2008, -6/+6Well with the shortage of corn now, there won't be much more high fructose corn syrup to go into many products in the next few months. Not after that flood destroying millions of hectares of corn.
- madfrogurt, on 07/06/2008, -0/+8Do you have any idea what percentage of corn was destroyed, or what percentage of corn is used to make corn syrup, or basically any legitimate information other than "I heard some corn got killed so I assume there is going to be a problem"?
- duggdowncatisad, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2Don't worry, the government subsidies will ensure that plenty of corn gets grown so there's no problem filling our nations coke cans and gas tanks.
- damian7, on 07/06/2008, -9/+0I know this isn't a cure for diabetes, but I urge all of you to at least drink 2-3 cups of Green Tea everyday. Stuff is amazing.

- bobman2007, on 07/06/2008, -0/+8Which type of diabetes are they referring to? The article is ambiguous. A lot of Type 1 diabetics use insulin pumps, but some Type 2 diabetics do too. People can't help getting Type 1 since it is a genetic disorder, but Type 2 is onset.
- giveer, on 07/06/2008, -0/+7This ~is~ the generic American diet we're talking about here, so it's a fairly safe bet the article's general reference points towards Type 2, albeit, there's likely overlapping info on both.
- lucy22, on 07/06/2008, -0/+5It is type 2 they are referring to. Onset generally around 40, overweight and develop insulin resistance. It is growing in people are overweight, and poses other health risks: heart problems, blindness, peripheral neropathy, etc. Controlled by losing weight, insulin or pill, exercise. No cure yet.
- lyrnx, on 07/06/2008, -3/+0Actually as far as I know type 2 is genetic. If you have a close relative who has type 2 diabetes, you are more likely to develop it. Type 1 is autoimmune or might even be caused by viruses. The genetic link in this type is not as strong as in type 2.
Both types are linked to many health problems (heart problems, blindness, peripheral neuropathy, etc) People with type 1 develop these problems earlier on in life, because they have usually been living with diabetes for much longer.
The American diet definitely does not help in either case.

- kakapu4u, on 07/06/2008, -2/+1When it comes to eating, fat does not cause diabetes. Sugar does.
Basically, your pancreas wears out from producing large and frequent quantities of insulin to help process sugar entering the blood. When it does wear out, you can no longer make insulin to metabolize sugar, and you now have Type II Diabetes. - VinceNoir, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1Not true. Check out"The 10% Solution" by Ray Kurzweil. It's not a fad diet. It's real, had scientific fact. Yes, we also overindulge in sugar, salt and protein as well and he states that. But fat intake is the worst problem in the western diet.

stop effin eating you fat fat sacks of fat - lolmacs, on 07/06/2008, -0/+7I wrote CNN telling them to get their facts straight, as it seems everyone and their idiot brother thinks Diabetes is Diabetes. Its not. There are 2 types: Type 1 (hereditary or viral based) and Type 2 (usually due to obesity or diet).
Frankly I'm pretty fed up when people are like "oh you have diabetes? were you fat when you were a little kid?" No moron there are two types. FFS thats like saying that everyone with cancer has breast cancer.- Uaedaien, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2Type 2 is more likely to be hereditary, probably because being fat runs in the family. But yes there are 2 types and even temporary diabetes during pregnancy. Type 2 is on the increase as far as I'm aware and type 1 is not as its not caused by an ever widening average waste size.
- earthforce1, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1There is a lot of confusion between type 1 and 2. Wikipedia seems to have a pretty good article explaining the difference between the two:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabeties#Type.C2.A01 ...
And yes, I was not overweight when I was diagnosed with type 1, and am more or less average now. I didn't have any family or ethnic risk factors either. It used to be called "Juvenile Diabetes" because you often got type 1 as a child or around puberty - somehow I only showed symptoms after age 40, making me something of a statistical outlier. In fact, my family doctor at the time initially started treating me with medication assuming I had to be a type 2 to which I was completely unresponsive. (My family was freaking - they figured I was going to drop dead or suffer kidney failure at any minute if they couldn't figure why my sugars were so high) It is only when my treatment was expanded to include type 1 medication that my blood sugar fell back to normal range, and when I was finally referred to a specialist, she confirmed that I was a type 1 from the meds that were/were not working.
It is even more complex than Type 1/2 - you can have gestational diabetes (See wiki article) that only appears when you are pregnant. My first doctor mentioned something called type 1.5 which is very rare - probably what is termed "Other types" in the wiki article, but I guess the diagnosis and classification remain uncertain.
- seaofcheese, on 07/06/2008, -1/+4actually it has nothing to do with your fat intake. It is sugars(complex or simple sugars like table sugar or any carb like bread). Your pancreas has to pump out insulin to balance out your blood sugar whenever you eat something, after years and years of eating too much sugars the cells in your body that let the insulin in just dont give a ***** anymore and ignore the chemical signal and thus you have Type 2. Also that is why if you have type 2 you have really no reason for taking insulin your body pancreas makes the stuff just fine but your cells dont care
- KJeffV, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1Exactly!
Every country in history that began refining sugar & carbohydrates experienced—w/i 20 yrs of those introductions—widespread heart probs & adult-onset diabetes. Agreed 100%! HFCS will be the 2000's "bane" as trans-fats were in the 90s. Of course, I heartily disagree w/the idea of a gov't-mandated ban, so getting the word out and convincing consumers to write/call/bitch to food mfgrs will go a long way towards this end. Read the testimonals ,,helps with diabetes. - kkeithnr, on 07/09/2008, -1/+0Diabetes is going to continue to increase as long as we eat foods that are devoid of enzymes,(the majority of our food is eaten cooked), eat more than is good for the system, and eat between meals(snacking/grazing). These things among others, like lack of exercise, tend to create insulin resistance in the body...the precursor to diabetes.
Diabetes is basically a diet disease. We eat and live in such a way that we cause our pancreas to have to produce enzymes to help break down what we eat...because we are eating foods void of enzymes the great majority of the time. Eating live food...,fresh fruits and vegetables, in their raw state provide enzymes which help break down our food. Thus the pancreas has to produce less digestive enzymes, yet it receives the benefits of the nutrients received from the fruits and vegetables. It seems the Creator had it right in the beginning.
In my herbal practice and ministry I am encountering more and more people that need help with diabetes. Diabetes has been, and can be reversed naturally...by combing lifestyle changes, diet, exercise, a herbal program, and maybe even some supplements.
