Pomegranate Ranked Healthiest Fruit Juice
cbsnews.com — Pomegranate is the healthiest of them all because it contains the most of every type of antioxidant. It wins in all categories. And it's thought that it might do some very good things; it may protect against some cancers, such as prostate cancer. It might also modify heart disease risk factors, and it could be healthy for your heart.

- SIRBERUS, on 07/05/2008, -2/+56Yes, but it is bloody expensive. Stains like crazy as well. Tastes lovely, though.
- Luigison, on 07/06/2008, -0/+24You can buy a pomegranate a lot cheaper than its juice and easily separate the seeds by density. Cut it down the sides in about six equal parts then put it in water. The peel and rind will float and the seeds will sink. Strain and enjoy. Much cheaper than prepared juice and better for you.
- LinkGCN4, on 07/06/2008, -2/+31Are you asking us to do work?
- SIRBERUS, on 07/06/2008, -0/+20You seriously overestimate me, sir.
- dreamlayers, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3I think you're missing a step. The pips/arils (seeds surrounded by flesh) don't separate by themselves. You need to work the sections over with your fingers.
I don't find it difficult to do this without water, but the pips can break and splash brightly coloured pomegranate juice quite far.
When cutting a pomegranate into sections, I mostly make shallow cuts and break it apart. If a pip is cut a lot of the juice drains out from it. When breaking apart, the pomegranate breaks between the pips, leaving them intact. - nobody98, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3Yummier than just having the juice too.
- SixOrSoPapers, on 07/06/2008, -2/+0Wouldn't it be easier to just, you know, eat the thing?

- chispito, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1I've known people who had avocado trees and people who had pomegranate trees, and for the life of me I can still never figure out why each is relatively so expensive, even in season.
- crapmatic, on 07/06/2008, -0/+6Increasing demand. Plus POM has somewhat of a monopoly, which doesn't help matters.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MonaVie- Seventus, on 07/06/2008, -0/+6Looks more expensive than it's worth.... Advertising?
- HigherLogic, on 07/06/2008, -2/+2Are you asking if I'm advertising? I was just asking if pomegranate juice was healthier than the acai berry.
- Lukesed, on 07/06/2008, -1/+9Obviously pomegranate is better, assuming CBS is correct. The story says that pomegranate is the healthiest. Forget RTFA, all you need to do to figure that out is read the ***** headline.
Açaí berries are indeed very antioxidant-dense, but since MonaVie doesn't publish how much of each fruit they put in the drink I imagine it would contain very little in favor of cheaper juices (the other 17 fruits in the drink). You're better off eating some apples, they have a lot of antioxidants too. You could buy like 10 pounds of them for the same price one bottle of that Ponzi *****. - superkendall, on 07/06/2008, -4/+3I've tried that and - ack. Buyer beware.

I already knew what MLM meant (had friends try to get my family into a few different MLM schemes). But out of curiosity, I punched MLM into google as you said The first thing that comes up is Martin Marietta Materials, some company on the stock exchange.
Dreamlayers said "Plus it's sold via MLM... ugh! " so if someone were to just google it without knowing what the initials meant (Why they were googling) they would probably assume that Dream was saying "Plus it's sold via Martin Marietta Materials... ugh!" :)
You know, you could just tell them a lot faster than besmirching the name of Martin Marietta. :P

- dreamlayers, on 07/06/2008, -6/+14Most brands are just red, acidic and expensive. The best pomegranate juice I found was Cedar brand. The juice is from Iran and there are no additives. It tastes great (lot of flavour), it's not too acidic and it's not too expensive. As a bonus, by purchasing it you help support Iran, a country which is being unfairly bullied.

- dreamlayers, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3Why do you equate the leadership with the country? Should people boycott US products because of Bush and his associates?
Anyways, I primarily made that comment because it was difficult to find pomegranate juice that actually tasted good, or that even had much taste besides the acidity. Like WTF do most factories do, crush whole unripe pomegranates and bottle the result?
Another juice I really liked was:
PC Pomegranate Blueberry Juice Blend (probably only available in Canada):
http://www.presidentschoice.ca/FoodAndRecipes/Grea ...
However, note that the first ingredient is apple juice! I cannot recommend it to someone seeking pomegranate juice. PC has some serious mislabelling, like their "Pomegranate Green and White Tea" where the only mention of pomegranate in the ingredients is extract which is the *last* ingredient:

Because they have a lot of seeds in them and are hard to juice without turning very bitter, plus they're expensive. There are better and cheaper alternatives.

http://emptyage.honan.net/mth/2007/10/how-to-eat-a ...
has useful pictures
They're deliciously tricky. Puzzling, even, with their tough skins and all those little red seeds. But splitting one open and getting all that fruit is actually pretty easy. Here's how to do it.
STEP ONE
Find yourself a Pomegranate. If it's an organic one from your local CSA, all the better. But any will do.
STEP TWO
Begin by cutting off the top part of the fruit, called the crown.
I am fast, like a ninja.
STEP THREE
Slice the skin into segments. When you finish it should look something like this:
STEP FOUR
Soak the pomegranate in a bowl of water for a few minutes. How many? Let's say ten. That should do.
STEP FIVE
Break up the fruit in the bowl, you'll notice that the fruit sinks to the bottom while the rind floats up to the top.
STEP SIX
Once the fruit and rind are separated, you can skim the rind off of the top of the water. You can agitate the water to help get everything split up.
STEP SEVEN
Strain and drain, dude.
STEP EIGHT
Eat it. Or juice it. Whatever you'd like. I like it with a little yogurt. You may not.- tmyprod, on 07/06/2008, -2/+10Could break that down into even more steps for me? This whole "eating" thing is so very confusing.

- Ellipsys, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3This: http://www.lakewoodjuices.com/product_detail/id-37 ... is what you want. Many pom juices have added sugar, or are made from concentrates. This stuff is organic, relatively cheap ($5.99 a bottle, give or take), and has nothing in it aside from pure juices. I also recommend their Pure Pineapple (pretty much any of their "Pure" line are the best store-bought juices one can buy. No concentrates. No sugar. No preservatives. No additional cheap juices to dilute the mix.)

In ancient times, it was seen as food for royalty and is known as the Chinese apple. We used to nibble on these as kids and it is a fun fruit to have in front of cartoons and Sesame Street. Happy to know the pomegranate is getting so popular today.
- Folksie, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0Just make sure you're buying non-pasteurized pom juice (if you can find it). Heating the juice to high temps destroys SO much of the great phytonutrients that it has to offer. If you can't find pasteurized pom juice (and I bet you can't) then BUY A POMEGRANATE! Eat the whole thing, and you'll get way more health benefits then from some cooked juice. They're not 10 bucks each, either.
