Promiscuity Culture Causes Higher Sexual Diseases In Youths
dailymail.co.uk — A culture of promiscuity among the young has sent rates of sexually-transmitted infections soaring to record levels, doctors have warned. Almost 400,000 Britons were diagnosed with diseases from chlamydia to gonorrhoea last year - the highest number for at least three decades. Half of the infections were in under-25s, despite this age group ...

- xeic, on 07/16/2008, -10/+2It's not true. If condom is correctly used, then: more sex != more STD
The question is, why the young people don't use condoms? Are the condoms too much expensive?

Well, the graphic says: yes. 13$ for a box of 10 is a robbery.- mahler, on 07/16/2008, -8/+1Another obvious thing would be, that promiscuity culture causes lower crime-rate...
- Charlotte_Web, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2Education will influence more condom use, sure, but it's a guarantee that condom use will NEVER be 100%; there will ALWAYS be a certain percentage of sexual encounters where condoms are not used. I'd even be willing to bet that in MOST of the STD cases, the participants knew the risks of sex without a condom and did it, anyway (hormones tend to override rational thought).

Studies with aids have found (not taking into account the proximaty of cancer and other research facilities, alleged to be a source) that people in countries with more selenium, boron and other nutrients in their soils have far less rates of aids, despite as much or greater degrees of promiscuity. Similaryl in Amercia the soils have been depleted for some time. Healthy bodies are much more resistant to all infections. - lanium, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2Not necessarily,

Buried.- poidh, on 07/16/2008, -5/+16Right. So because you think that this is "conservative moral high horse scaremongering" then that means that the article is not true? So almost 400,000 Britons weren't diagnosed with an STD just because you don't like the Daily Mail? That's quite a power you have there - the power to alter reality just because you don't like how it is reported.
In which case, I'm going to ask the Daily Mail to report that I haven't got a billion pounds in the bank. Then you can use your super powers of disbelief to make a billion pounds appear magically in my account. I wish I'd met you sooner, idiot.- Imachick, on 07/16/2008, -10/+1I have no idea why you're banging on about how much money you have or don't have. Waydee's point is that it is entirely predictable that the Mail would take an angle such as this on this sort of story.
Most readers of Digg are American, and they may not realise that the Mail is tremendously conservative and moralising on issues like sex.
It's a valid point, concisely made, and you frothing and being a rude idiot isn't going to alter that reality. - poidh, on 07/16/2008, -2/+10@Imachick
Waydee's point is that because he thinks that reporting that 400,000 Britons were diagnosed with an STD is "conservative moral high horse scaremongering", he buried it. That's what he said. I suppose that if the state of Britain's exual health were reported by a paper of which he approves then it would be ok.
You, madam, are an idiot. - waydee, on 07/16/2008, -3/+3Imachick - thanks for explaining, shame it falls on deaf ears.
The Daily Mail is renowned for its right-wing reactionary stance on social issues in the UK. They pick these issues seemingly randomly and wage thinly veiled campaigns against them through their articles.
Next week they'll be back to trying to convince us immigration is the worst thing to ever happen to our great country and to "send them all back home". The following week we'll be hearing about how the kids are running riot and the very fabric of British society is falling apart because of rap music and hoodies.
Poidh, you have no idea of how this newspaper operates. I do not dispute the figures published, while the Daily Heil is well known to make up facts as it deems necessary it seems on this one they have not - what I object to is how they're using these figures and the tone of their writing, taking thinly veiled jabs at what the Americans would consider 'liberal' social programmes and policies. A good example:
"But Norman Wells, of campaign group Family and Youth Concern, said the Teenage Pregnancy Strategy has encouraged young people to think they can engage in casual sexual relationships without consequences and has led to more sexual experimentation and more disease."
"'The answer does not lie in yet more sex education and contraceptive schemes, but in honestly telling young people the only sure way to avoid being infected with an STI is to keep sexual intimacy within the context of a lifelong, mutually faithful relationship with an uninfected partner.'"
The Daily Mail is the voice of the outraged middle England Conservative, this article is designed to agree with their minority opinion that offering contraception, abortions on the NHS etc. is a damaging policy. I and most decent British people take exception to this but we all know fine well this is what the Daily Mail do and for the most part ignore their ramblings.
Note if you will the single sentence buried near the top of the article: "Better tests and shorter waiting times at clinics also explain the rise, the agency said. ". Of course this is overlooked and not discussed in any further detail.
I hate seeing their articles on Digg not only because of their far right political stance which is in direct conflict to my own (and I freely admit my bias) but because nobody in their right mind in the land where this newspaper is distributed takes them seriously yet on this website the frequency of their articles appearing on the front page may mislead people into thinking they are a credible source or in any way indicative of British public opinion.
I feel my bias is justified, perhaps the best reason to dislike the daily mail is their famous support for the fascists in the early 30s, those days may be over but their obvious right wing bias and history makes me and I expect a lot of people weary of their motives.
I'm not alone, i've yet to see a single dailymail.co.uk article posted on digg without most British people (the ones in a position to make such comments) making their opinion of this paper known.
Sorry for the length but I felt you needed an explanation. - flashback99, on 07/16/2008, -4/+2No, it's because it's the daily ***** mail, that it's likely not true. Dumbass.
- poidh, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1Oh noes, it's a "right wing" paper. Run for the hills, not before stopping to read some hand-wringing drivel from the Guardian I suppose.

- EntropyFan, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Sadly, it isn't a must that one follows another. Since the enactment of mandatory condoms in (legalized) US prostitution, there hasn't been a single recorded case of AIDS and little problem with sexually transmitted diseases.

Digg needs an OBVIOUS tag like fark.com has. - sonnybobiche, on 07/16/2008, -0/+5FTA: "The Health Protection Agency, which collected the figures, said promiscuity was partly to blame for the record number of cases, with casual sex increasingly becoming 'part of the territory' for young people.
Better tests and shorter waiting times at clinics also explain the rise, the agency said.
Others claimed the rising rates were fuelled by the Government's Teenage Pregnancy Strategy, which involves making contraception and sex education more widely available.
Since its introduction in 1999 the number of girls having abortions has soared, with some on their fourth before they reach 18. Under plans revealed earlier this month, sex education could be given to children as young as four."
A smart man learns from his own mistakes. A brilliant man learns from the mistakes of others. - shauncorleone, on 07/16/2008, -7/+6More sex does not automatically equal more STD's. More sex with multiple partners increases the risk, obviously. Considering how many adults are not emotionally mature enough to maintain monogamous relationships, myself included, it can only be worse among kids. Also considering how irresponsible we so-called "adults" can be with using protection, and how many kids are constantly trying to hide evidence of sexual activity from parents, and they're even less likely to wrap it up. But these claims of "more sex = stds" is ri-goddamn-diculous.
- alankel, on 07/16/2008, -1/+6It's not saying more sex equals more in STDs, it says promiscuity (characterized by or involving indiscriminate mingling or association, esp. having sexual relations with a number of partners on a casual basis. thank you dictionary.com) causes a higher rate of STDs, which is just common sense.
- pilgrim3970, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1"not emotionally mature enough to maintain monogamous relationships"

- Frenicks, on 07/16/2008, -6/+8The Mail's angle is complete bs. The statistics actually only show an increase in DIAGNOSIS and TREATMENT, which can only be a good thing. It's plain stupid to assume an increase in diagnosis means an increase in promiscuity.
If anything this shows that the recent sexual health advertising campaigns are leading more people to get checked out. - applessauce, on 07/16/2008, -5/+4"Better tests and shorter waiting times at clinics also explain the rise, the agency said."
Translation: the rise in the number diagnosed cases of STDs may just be because of a fall in the number of undiagnosed cases of STDs, rather than a rise in the number of people with STDs. - LokitheComplex, on 07/16/2008, -5/+2Isn't sex for the young?
- CosmicJustice, on 07/16/2008, -3/+9So for the last 5000 years, when every religion on the planet has been telling people not to ***** around, they weren't just doing it to be a buzz kill?
- pilgrim3970, on 07/16/2008, -7/+8For you that scoff at abstinence - the reason it doesn't work is because we live in culture that doesn't WANT it to work.
Advertising frequently uses sex to sell products, movies and music encourage it, sex ed courses irresponsibly teach that one can be promiscuous and still dodge the STD bullet as long as you practice "safe" sex (never mind the fact that condoms only *lessen* the likelyhood of getting an STD - would you slip one on and go have sex with someone you new had HIV? Didn't think so). So when you have all these factors, is it any wonder that young people feel pressured to engage in this sort of behaviour?
I know that I'll likely get dugg down for this but as they say, "what's popular isn't always right and what's right isn't always popular."- popfrogs, on 07/16/2008, -1/+3Abstinence doesn't work because we're human.
