- MacBookForMe, on 10/10/2008, -2/+18oh, yeah, every financial crisis is a mental threat...(nothing really surprising, though:)
- jaymzdean, on 10/10/2008, -2/+15Mental threats.
The recipe for control of the masses calls for it. - BradMW, on 10/10/2008, -12/+7Not paying bills 'is pathetic'
- HencheMann, on 10/10/2008, -3/+10No actually, in this situation, it is viewed as good 'ol American civil disobedience. Prioritize the necessities, ***** the banks and default your credit card payments. This is really the best way to burn down a less than equitable system.
- GreatToast, on 10/10/2008, -12/+32Don't buy things you cannot afford.
- shutaro, on 10/10/2008, -0/+24What about stuff?
- smashingmonkey, on 10/10/2008, -2/+12The nature of recession is such that what people can and cannot afford can change in a heartbeat. People may be losing a house or car they could afford two years ago, but can NO LONGER afford because of massive layoffs or failing health.
- homesickalien, on 10/10/2008, -1/+25Things aren't so black and white. Getting laid off from your job or unforeseen medical bills can ***** you so badly you'll never be able to recover.
- sdwilly, on 10/10/2008, -8/+6While medical problems can surprise you, layoffs generally don't come out of the blue, they are fairly well telegraphed. Just one of those things you need to pay attention to.
- jwoulf, on 10/10/2008, -2/+8Had both happen to me at the same time...
The loss of my job hit me pretty hard, but I just ignored the medical bills. They can't screw my credit rating when I have none to begin with. I hate the credit system and I chose to have nothing to do with it, Cash/check/debit/silver/gold FTW! - shutaro, on 10/10/2008, -2/+5@jwoulf: Silver and Gold are not the ideal metals to buy at this time... After all, you can't fashion tools and weapons out of silver and gold. No... Iron and Steel are the way to go.
- buckrogers1965, on 10/10/2008, -0/+8True if you have the right iron/lead/brass devices you can take as much silver and gold as you are man enough to take.
- jwoulf, on 10/10/2008, -1/+3@shutaro & buckrogers1965
I already have plenty of those. Of both the long and short variety.
Czech 7.62x54R Steel-Core is a fine vintage, I highly recommend investing in it.
- mk3k, on 10/10/2008, -1/+4True, a few years back I realized that banks will give you a loan for more than you can afford. Before that I thought they would only give me what I could handle. I didn't take the loan and learned a lesson. Seems some people did not.
- krnldmp, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2If nobody borrowed anything this mess wouldn't have happened, and never mind that the banks APPROVED all the loans that are defaulting. *****, in some cases the BANKS are defaulting. Sorry, but the only thing that will fix this is changed or more laws. One good way is to let the banks lend on a 10:1 ratio instead of the 20 or 30 that they are now. That would be a good first step back to world sanity and security.
- smokeydbear, on 10/10/2008, -7/+11Man, if we weren't such a nation of whiners this wouldn't have happened in the first place. The fundamentals of the economy are strong after all.
- shutaro, on 10/10/2008, -5/+4Your mom is a nation of whiners.
- nysus, on 10/10/2008, -4/+13When you build on a society that teaches people what they are worth is measured by what they own, it this shouldn't come as a surprise. Hopefully what comes out of this crash is some re-evaluation of our over-materialistic ways.
I like cool things and gadgets as much as the next guy, but when our sense of self-worth comes from the things we can buy, we have a problem on our hands.- oxdeltaxo, on 10/10/2008, -0/+6This is true for wants but needs like food water and shelter are more pressing concerns.
- logosx1, on 10/11/2008, -0/+0Excellent post. If there's a silver lining here, it's that people might get their priorities in order and re-gain some perspective on what really matters. I predict more widespread readings of "How The Grinch Stole Christmas."
- hiabex, on 10/10/2008, -0/+8It also seems that it's a way of making cigarettes grow out of your forehead.
- shutaro, on 10/10/2008, -1/+2I hate when that happens. =P
- mardraum, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2so like acne
but I can smoke it
feels good man
- snds, on 10/10/2008, -3/+11Haven't we been having mental threats from the Bush Administration for 8 years now?
- kcmo08, on 10/10/2008, -2/+9People get depressed during tough times. How exactly is this surprising?
- kcmo08, on 10/10/2008, -4/+6How exactly is this surprising?
- kcmo08, on 10/10/2008, -2/+3Sorry, my Firefox browser has had trouble with multiple submissions for some reason. Please bury this.
- Hetman, on 10/10/2008, -2/+6Damn if I found out I was infertile I would throw a party, not get depressed. Anyways happiness is something that is internal. One can be happy and own nothing, but having money has never hurt either.
- BESTenemy, on 10/10/2008, -1/+13The side effects of the Economic Depression might include Psychological Depression.
- leontes, on 10/10/2008, -1/+8This entire thing exacerbates preexisting mental conditions. Plus, insurances are not immune to tough economic times and are more likely to support less amount of time in hospital, partial hospital and intensive outpatient supports for those with substance abuse and mental health disorders.
It makes me a little sick to my stomach to see people talk about being a nation of "whiners". Mental health disorders have very little to do with willpower or 'being strong'. It has to do with social supports, genetic predispositions, traumatic experiences, and skills to deal with crisis. Pushing things down or aside tend to bottle things up and they come out as potentially damaging events.
It is times like this when we, as a nation, should become more compassionate and understanding when it comes to mental health and substance abuse illnesses. We all have different individuals skills and some people are not by nature resilient. They should be provided the space to get the help they need. - buckrogers1965, on 10/10/2008, -1/+8Tough for people to get to the doctor or the dentist or a therapist when they don't have work and health care is entirely tied to having a job. Throw in an eviction notice on top of that and I am sure that there are going to be a lot of tragedies coming up soon. Reading about these tragedies isn't going to be all that helpful to peoples mental health either.
Help your friends and family and neighbors. Nobody else will help them.
Wow, dug down before I finished even editing it. Cool! - gdog05, on 10/10/2008, -0/+5Man, I thought having a demon inhabit your body once would suck, but twice? No way you'd have good mental health after that.
/sar - gallito89, on 10/10/2008, -0/+5Don't fear the reaper, fear the repo man.
- DiggGeek24, on 10/10/2008, -7/+3Stop buying things that you cannot afford, and do not give me that unforeseen circumstances BS you plain ahead for those unforeseen circumstances I keep enough money in my savings account to live for 1 year I take in account my Power Bill which runs on average $158/mo. Phone/Internet/TV $180, Groceries $240/mo. Insurance Medical/Dental $920/mo. Car Payment $360/mo.Rent $1175/mo. Plus an extra $600/mo. for unforeseen circumstances, I keep $43,596 in my savings account at all time I never touch it no matter how bad I wanna buy a 72" HDTV, Insane gaming PC, etc.
- mardraum, on 10/10/2008, -1/+4not to be a dick so don't take it that way even though it's the MO for diggers, but how do you spend $160 a month on power and why do you factor TV into your emergency plans?
- shutaro, on 10/10/2008, -0/+4All that planning is not gonna do you a bit of good when the marauding hordes are beating down your door to get at the tender meat inside... And, in the mean time, you've deprived yourself of a nice TV.
- DiggGeek24, on 10/10/2008, -1/+2Thats why I have a class 3 firearms license when they eat taste my full-auto Heckler-Koch HK417, and AR-15 they will flee in terror.
- shutaro, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2Well, until you run out of bullets, anyway.
- DiggGeek24, on 10/10/2008, -1/+2My doors has 1 titanium dead bolt lock, 1 heavy bolt lock I have 1,200 bullets for both guns which is 40 magazines plus 50 people live in my apartment complex so 2 or 3 shot per person 150 rounds im set.
- shutaro, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1I do not think you understand the scope of the coming apocalypse. I'm not talking 50 people in an apartment complex... I'm talking 5000 people whipped into a bloodthirsty economic panic by a feudalistic warlord... Oh, by the way, they also just raided the National Guard armory... This is doom, I say... DOOM! And you're going to be forced to experience it with only a ***** TV for company... I pitty you, sir.
- aud24, on 10/10/2008, -2/+3Wow talk about stating the obvious... I can tell you my grandparents didn't have time to sit around and talk about their mental health during the Depression..they sucked it up and did what they had to do. Freudian Psychology made us a bunch of whiny bitches.
- dwhitbeck, on 10/10/2008, -1/+0I have heard about being possessed but never repossessed. Will exorcism help?
- edpapavitch, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2... with physical consequences.
- rotten777, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2Not for me. If it gets too bad, screw them take my over-sized mortgage and car payment.
I've opened my eyes over the last decade. Never again! - PhantomZmoove, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1Wow, how much cash do you have tied up in weapons? Those are some expensive firearms!
(and quite nice too) - spectxim, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1Possession laws worry me more.
