Robot Prototype Finds, Attacks and Kills Breast Cancer Cells
gizmodo.com — Here's one in the plus column for the looming robot uprising: a prototype developed by University of Maryland professor Jaydev Desai could one day diagnose, hunt, and destroy breast cancer cells all in one sitting, and in a much more efficient manner than we ham-handed human beings.

- searcade, on 10/12/2008, -1/+17"Unfortunately, the robot is a prototype, and trials are estimate to be four years out, if they happen at all. "We're not just governed by technology," said said Rao Gullapalli, a collaborator on the robot from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. "We're governed by bureaucracy as well.""
I would have liked the bad news first.- jemka, on 10/14/2008, -0/+5You know I always fantasized red tape between breasts to be a good thing.

- CrankyHippo, on 10/14/2008, -1/+4I hope that this technology could lead into a robot that simulates a pancreas for Type 1 diabetics
- borez, on 10/14/2008, -4/+1*****
- megamod, on 10/14/2008, -1/+1I understand that it seems like there's too much bureaucracy in this world to the point that even simple tasks become inefficient and cumbersome.
Imagine the bad publicity this would get if it wasn't tested thoroughly and the robot ended up in the bloodstream/heart. Would it be more backpedaling than the bureaucratic effort being put into this? Who knows?- RobotBuddha, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1Probably. It wouldn't be the first time that a new treatment that 0.somthing percent of the population has bad reaction to winds up letting hundreds of thousands of people die because the public has a freakout. A public usually totally healthy, but willing to demand that we not be allowed to take the risks if we want to. As someone who's in pretty much constant pain every second, I can promise you that I'd be more than willing to take a 1% chance of death if it'd offer hope to get me out of this.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/14/2008, -0/+5It's just a matter of time before they track down Sarah Connor.
- doublefelix, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1If they're talking nanotechnology here I wished they'd just call it that cause I can't handle the idea of 'invisible robots. ***** that.

- bootlegapparel, on 10/14/2008, -1/+1As great as that sounds, if i was in that situation i sure as hell wouldn't want a robot operating on me.
What if it malfunctions and burns your whole breast off? Some things you still want to be done by humans no matter how advanced robotics gets- RobotBuddha, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1Given that burning the breast off is the final option if it can't be stopped, I think it's a safe gamble.
- crackedlogic, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1I am Bender, please insert cancer.
- dddavid, on 10/14/2008, -0/+0"Better yet, the robot will also be able to access parts of the human body that human surgeons can't" -- Isn't that why in the future, all hookers will be robots?
- chromerium, on 10/14/2008, -0/+3As a programmer, I do worry about bugs. What if someone messed up the 'cancer identification code' and it went after just the boobs.
The boobs, won't somebody think of the boobs! - palmdoc, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1Just make sure the robot does not run on Windoze.....
