http://www.democracynow.org/2004/2/13/the_dark_sid ...- Surferess, on 07/04/2008, -1/+2Dude, that is such a downer!
- cygnus2112, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2Such a complicated issue. If you pull out the opportunity for work, their families may starve or not have the chances that they will by working. Even during the industrial revolution, the children of North America worked to support their families or family members so they could go to school, etc.
I think more should be done to develop the nations where they live and to encourage their governments to introduce laws banning child labor, but also work with the companies (like M&M/Hershey's) to provide more jobs to their parents and those who are unemployed in the country.
It's easy to blame "evil corporations for exploiting children" but those who do usually do not understand the drastic conditions that would exist without those very industries - the lives of the children would not improve. Just take a look at Zimbabwe and what happened when Mugabe removed those "evil white European farmers".- AriaStar, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3Exactly. It's basically a necessary evil. While it's deplorable in our eyes, to them those jobs make the difference between eating something or starving.
- chinauprising, on 07/04/2008, -0/+22Chocolate with breakfast!?? - works for me!
- ironeus, on 08/01/2008, -0/+25this is great news for cocoa puffs!
- BrendanSheehan, on 07/05/2008, -1/+3Probably only about 10% cocoa I'd say.
- AriaStar, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4No where near that much, I'd say.
- BrendanSheehan, on 07/05/2008, -1/+3Probably only about 10% cocoa I'd say.

- georgemason01, on 07/04/2008, -2/+15Don't tell me what to do.
- JiRaff, on 07/05/2008, -6/+7I remember as a kid when I was learning French at school I thought it was weird they ate chocolate for breakfast but they're pretty skinny aren't they? Maybe it's nothing to do with red wine or garlic but Nutella and pain au chocolat!
I've just started a diet and am very confused now. In the last 5 minutes I've read soup is bad and chocolate is good. If you're on a diet or lost weight recently let me know what worked at :
http://www.opiniondb.com/DoSurveyList.aspx?id=f319 ...- AriaStar, on 07/05/2008, -0/+7The French are far more active that your average American, and there is no pride in being fat and unhealthy. That's why they're thinner.
- werries, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4ride a bike.
- shawnanigans, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1PS. If you learned French in Canada, the French-Canadians aren't skinny. I live in Ottawa and going to Hull is like going to another world of large hairy women.

- Fangsinmybeard, on 07/05/2008, -2/+1I hear that, Loves the chocolate.
- shpadoinkle, on 07/05/2008, -2/+0It is caused in part by the phenylethamine that is in chocolate. I supplement with the stuff, and gives you the greatest feel good buzz ever!
- jdago, on 07/05/2008, -11/+2JUST WAIT TILL TOMMOROW ANOTHER REASEARCH WILL CHANGE THIS VIEW. I THINK THE BEST ANSWER IS MODERATION. ITS AS GOOD A THEORY AS ANY OYHER.
- blanketfury, on 07/05/2008, -0/+14How about you moderate your Caps Lock
- ThePug, on 07/05/2008, -2/+1Is the article calling me fat?
- JasonCox, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2So eggs, bacon, sausage and ice cream? WOOHOO!
- aserer511, on 07/05/2008, -6/+1This is obviously false, or else michael moore would already be in killer shape.
- torsoheap, on 07/05/2008, -4/+3The big breakfast they described is exactly what the South Beach Diet recommends so this article is mildly inaccurate. The (F)Atkins diet is the one that recommends low to no carbs whereas the South Beach one recommends only good carbs - those that take a while to digest so that your blood sugar does not spike.
I'm not surprised that a British newspaper would recommend chocolate for breakfast since the Brits love them some sweets.- effingham, on 07/05/2008, -0/+6The Globe and Mail newspaper is not British. It's published in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Also, the research was done at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.
- apetrie, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4Wow, you got dugg down just for stating the simple fact that the Globe and Mail is Canadian, not British. Ah digg, sometimes you disappoint me so.
- torsoheap, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1My bad.
- effingham, on 07/05/2008, -0/+6The Globe and Mail newspaper is not British. It's published in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Also, the research was done at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.
- whitej, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2umm are we supposed to enjoy the chocolate square out by the pool?
- AriaStar, on 07/05/2008, -0/+11"Participants in the modified-carbohydrate, big breakfast diet consumed 1,240 calories a day."
THAT is the catch. A daily intake of 1,240 calories. My 5'7", 120lb body (I'm a girl, not a super-scrawny guy) uses more than that just to keep alive, never mind activity. If you eat so few calories, you will lose weight as your body digs into its own fat stores. It doesn't matter what you're eating if all you eat is 1,240 calories.- Vocifer, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1I would steer clear of diabetes though, among other things. Eating healthy helps as well.
- EtherGnat, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Except the people on the 1,240 calorie diet actually lost significantly more than the people on the 1,085 calorie diet. Nobody claimed it was some magic diet where you could lose weight by eating whatever you want--it's an examination of whether eating breakfast and what you eat is more productive.
- AriaStar, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1By the time you hit 1100 calories and under, your body goes into starvation mode and burns calories a lot slower.
- crapmatic, on 07/05/2008, -3/+3Agreed, someone got paid to figure out 1240 calories leads to weight loss? This whole thing is so stupid that someone should get beaten over the head with the Pittsburgh yellow pages.
And I call bull on the "big breakfast" idea. I've found that the bigger the morning breakfast, the bigger the afternoon appetite. - Huknows, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1They just threw in chocolate to make the story more sensational. If you eat less calories then you are going to lose weight. This is just the new diet of the month.
- dhughes, on 07/05/2008, -0/+3"According to researchers, a big breakfast packed with protein, carbs - and even something sweet - can lead to weight loss "
What if I'm not overweight, will I waste away and die? - Namco, on 07/05/2008, -1/+3Dude, what ever happened to exercise and eating smart?
- misbehaves, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1seriously.
- clockdist, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2This is the "eating smart" part.
- tchalla2, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Like a lot of research, this really skews a set of results to give you the wrong idea. A big breakfast a couple of times a week is a great idea. It keeps your metabolism up, keeps your hunger down. A big breakfast every day is a different story. A big breakfast promotes a massive insulin dump. Doing this on a regular basis is not optimal for weight management. Over time, you tend to pack the fat and carbs on. In the morning, glucagon is high and insulin is low. There is tremendous value in periodically eating to drive glucagon and not insulin. Glucagon is the primary fat burning hormone, not insulin. Fat burning stops as soon as insulin hits your blood stream. A big breakfast a couple of times a week mixed with a glucagon promoting breakfast will serve you a lot better over the long haul.

- ceramufary, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1Most disappointing headline ever. This article is about how important a big breakfast is, not about how I can eat chocolate in massive quantities and live for five hundred years.
I think I'm going to try my chocolate-breakfast diet and then publish a book about how my depression went away and I lost weight and met a perfect man and got the ring, sister. - traceymark35, on 07/07/2008, -1/+0Very good information, But doctors advise not to eat chocolates if you are over weight. Is there any other factors contributing to this fact?
