Start school later; teens will have less daytime sleepiness
businessshrink.biz — A study released by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine has shown changing school start time from 7:35am to 8:15am increased sleep time on school nights by an average of 33 minutes. It was believed that giving additional time could give teens more time to stay up at night. For most teens the extra time turned into extra sleep and less sleepiness

- lucy22, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6Interesting study. 8:15 seems a more reasonable time to start.
- kiverson, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2I'm more of a nooner myself.
- HuskyPuzzle, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4Seems like a good solution. I'm a fan of the Spanish model with siestas.
- upick, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2This is already happening in Malaysia.. There's morning and afternoon school.
Each year your school start either in the morning 7:15 OR afternoon at 2pm
I hate morning school...- Viend, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1But here in Malaysia these kind of studies are not the cause of the morning/afternoon schools system. It's just time management.
I once met a doctor who was telling me of these studies a long time ago, and I'm surprised it's actually taken into consideration by a government.

- whoreable, on 06/10/2008, -2/+3Sure make childhood easy, so when the kids face the harsh reality of adulthood they crumble.
- webaddict, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2Teenagers require 9 hours of sleep for proper development physically, emotionally and metabolically. This has nothing to do with making things easy but trying to help them develop to their utmost potential. - TomK88, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Harsh reality of what? Most jobs start at 8 or 9, which is when school should start.
- whoreable, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1There are difficult aspects of adulthood, other than the time you have to wake up.
- TomK88, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2Which have nothing to do with this discussion...
Why start school at 7am when it is more beneficial to the students to start it later? - whoreable, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1Because they will just stay up later. The point I was making is that kids are babied too much and that they can't handle real life. I assume the 88 in you name means you were born in 1988. So you are just a kid. That is why you don't understand what i am saying about adulthood.

- benologist, on 06/10/2008, -2/+4Why don't they just make school 9 to 5?
- curseoflou, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2would make sense being that a lot (i won't say most b/c im not sure) of parents are on that type of work schedule. it would probably help deter some behavioral problems by limiting the amount of time away from the parent.
- oreonblade, on 06/10/2008, -1/+6The students will just move their schedules further back and stay up even later. In college, no matter how late class starts you will manage to miss the first one a few times. I doubt high school will be any different.
- dantheman363, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3Ummmm, hello?? The teens need to go to sleep earlier. This isn't going to solve anything.
- stranglethorne, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4My brain functions best at night.
I don't know why, but i truly wish it didn't.
It's wierd, mental clarity and ability to comprehend reach peaks after 6pm.
Seriously sucks for early morning 9am college exams =(
Any psychologists on digg want to help me out?- benologist, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1I've always been like that too. I think it's because everything is so quiet at night, less background noise and interruptions.
- WriterSD, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2School starts at 7:35 some places? Yikes. That's harsh.
- justmytake, on 06/11/2008, -0/+3I can't imagine of what a half an hour of extra sleep in the morning would do for us all. It would be sheer bliss for my teenage children. During half days (in their school district), the kids start school 20 minutes later than usual. I get to see first hand the major difference it has on their overall clarity.
