- gak001, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2That's actually almost exactly what I thought when I saw this too.
- baconz, on 07/04/2008, -2/+2Piggsburgh should be near the top though.
- supermanly, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1What do you have against Pittsburgh?
- Divals, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1I wish. I live in Pittsburgh and it's almost impossible to find cute fat girls around here.
- MOJIRA, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1HOORAY for Florida; not in the top 10! Florida makes into the news for enough retarded reasons, we don't need to be on this list.
- Elranzer, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1They're also all Red States™ no surprise there.
- Pvisi111, on 07/03/2008, -2/+54That cat is ridiculous. I think he (or she) might be fatter than any of these states.
- ByronT, on 07/04/2008, -0/+26can had too many cheezburgers
- ironeus, on 08/01/2008, -0/+13I thought Texas usually makes the top 10. & to double-comment: is this cat for real or photoshopped?
- kosmoss, on 07/04/2008, -1/+2I can assure you it's real, go to deli at 52nd St. & 10th Ave in Manhattan and you'll see one like that (black though). I used to work close by. Unreal.
- RiMac, on 07/04/2008, -1/+4I thought Texas was gonna be in it, too. I really wouldn't have been surprised, considering how awesome our food is.
- scotticus, on 07/04/2008, -4/+2The fat states are not the ones with awesome food... they're mostly low income and they eat ***** processed food all the time. Awesome food need not be fattening.
- nafai, on 07/03/2008, -3/+19I thought for sure Wisconsin would be in the top 10 ... at least we win on alcohol consumption!
http://www.statemaster.com/graph/hea_alc_con_bin_d ...- ohnoerino, on 07/03/2008, -0/+6Me too...I've visited there quite a bit. The Wisconsin definition of a salad bar (ten kinds of cheese, six kinds of meat, 10 mayo based dressings, and some iceberg lettuce) seriously cracks me up.
- admdrew, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3Yeah, we basically subsist on brats, cheese, and beer.
- ElTomacco, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1I think I remember reading somewhere that Milwaukee is one of the fattest cities in the country. Although I might have just gotten that from The Simpsons.
- posure, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Based on our beer and cheese consumption, I'm kind of disappointed that we didn't make the list.
@ElTomacco
Milwaukee is the #1 drunkest city in the country, wouldn't surprise me.

- Heydude008, on 07/03/2008, -25/+5As a Californian, I can add "Fat" to "Religious Nutballs who try to force their religion on us" in the description

- ReDoEr, on 07/04/2008, -5/+7don't worry, this is Digg. Slamming religion is the only way people impress all the other 14-year-olds.
- userperson, on 07/04/2008, -1/+2Yes, because all people in the those states are religious as well as fat.
People shouldn't use force, but broad stereotyping bigotry is pretty sad too, and cuts both ways. - quaxon, on 07/04/2008, -0/+3Living in california and having traveled through most of middle america i can easily say that there definitely is significantly more fat and religion obsessed people in middle america. Hell in cincinnati that is almost all i saw my short time there.

- userperson, on 07/04/2008, -1/+6Stupid can lead to obesity and other bad decisions, assuming you're not, what's the excuse for your bigotry?
- punkcat, on 07/04/2008, -11/+72change "fat" to "dumbest" and i bet the list stays the same.
- Enigmocracy, on 07/04/2008, -2/+10It's true; Mississippi has the lowest average IQ of every state, with an average of 94.2
- EarlOfLade, on 07/04/2008, -4/+20Overlay the data with the most religious, the most right wing and the lowest IQ and you'll see a pattern.
- luet, on 07/04/2008, -2/+13But what will the conclusions be...

Stupidity makes you fat and religious?
DUMB FAT PEOPLE MAKE YOU CHRISTIAN
- luet, on 07/04/2008, -2/+13But what will the conclusions be...
- gak001, on 07/04/2008, -1/+4Hmm... we clearly have a correlation but do we have a causal relationship? I'd venture to guess yes.
- cvindustries, on 07/04/2008, -1/+2And increased ice cream sales causes crime. Just like that sentence left out "heat", yours left out "poverty".
- DangerCollie, on 07/04/2008, -1/+10I really do think there's a correlation. Not saying every heavy person is stupid, but it does seem strangely coincidental how fat, dumb, religious and Republican line up.
- BedPost, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Aside from Detroit, Michigan has a really good education system.
- bdbr, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Go to the CDC page linked from the article, and you'll see that obesity & education correlate (though obesity & income correlate more). Exercise & education correlate even more.

- evil-doer, on 07/04/2008, -4/+5i think i see a trend..
- RedViper1999, on 07/04/2008, -5/+10Are the more Republican states the fattest? I don't know the demographics but it looks that way. Except for states like Montana and Colorado.
- nebion, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1If I had to guess, the correlation would be that the states with the most simple, established lifestyles (somewhat rural, but not all farming - farmers tend to keep themselves fairly active) would have the highest rates of obesity.
Nothing necessarily to do with politics, just the kinds of jobs/activities/interests people have. There is likely to be a correlation with some politics, but it doesn't imply causation. - slowspin, on 07/04/2008, -2/+2Not quite sure Colorado can be counted as a Repulican state anymore - Denver hosting the DNC is a pretty good sign of that.
- Prodigal19, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1That and the fact that the Governor, Mayor (of denver) , and half of its senators are Democrats. I don't know why people are digging you down, Colorado certainly is a Republican state, its more like undecided.
- nebion, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1If I had to guess, the correlation would be that the states with the most simple, established lifestyles (somewhat rural, but not all farming - farmers tend to keep themselves fairly active) would have the highest rates of obesity.

church attendance?- cvindustries, on 07/04/2008, -1/+5Poverty.
- pixelguru, on 07/04/2008, -2/+2How does poverty makes you fat?
Last I checked, it's still cheaper to buy vegetables at the grocery store than it is to eat fast food every day. Poor healthcare, poor education, and bad cultural norms are much likelier to be the problem. - CorneliusStump, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1yeah the people in those states are so poor they can't even eat, wait what?
- cvindustries, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2And it's cheaper to buy carbs than it is to buy vegetables. Healthy eating is more expensive. Enriched flour, high-fructose corn syrup.
- pixelguru, on 07/04/2008, -2/+2How does poverty makes you fat?
- nebion, on 07/04/2008, -1/+2There would probably be some correlation, but I'd say that it isn't causal - it's more likely that they have a common cause; people who live their lives according to the simple formula that their parents deemed successful without worrying too much about whether that's the right choice.
In short - people who aren't interested in questioning the things they take for granted. Generally such people are considered conservatives, but they may or may not be politically affiliated with the modern variations thereof. - nseb, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1no.
- cvindustries, on 07/04/2008, -1/+5Poverty.
- catch-22, on 07/04/2008, -3/+20With the exception of Michigan, they're all south of the Mason-Dixon line. Why does that not surprise me?
- drmangrum, on 07/04/2008, -0/+13Maybe because that is where the majority of the poor are. Most of the people in the southern states average around a 35k a year. When your choices are pre-packaged food, poor quality beef ( ground ), and hot dogs, you're probably not going to be too healthy.
- marx2k, on 07/04/2008, -8/+2Why do the poor not know how to eat healthy on a small budget?
- nycmac247, on 07/04/2008, -0/+7rice and beans, etc. feed a lot of the world - they are just not making good choices, unfortunately.
- supermanly, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Because they don't have uber internets to see Digg articles about eating organic on a budget.
No, it's because they can't afford much, and what's there is ***** (prepackaged of course). - tjrecord, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1When the cheapest meal = McDonald's...
- Crucible1001, on 07/04/2008, -1/+1I spend around 60 a month on food in Michigan. Homemade bread, homemade pizza, various veggies, etc. I buy everything in bulk from Sam's Club.
I think some people are just stupid/lazy. It only costs me 37 cents for a healthy loaf of bread with 1950 calories and takes 5 mins to prep/clean using cheap bread maker from walmart. This is not including electricity and initial bread maker costs. Mix that with bulk veggies, and you've got yourself a healthy low calorie full days worth of food that is cheaper than ramen.
Your choices are not just unhealthy food. That crap actually costs more per amount of calories. - raquel9e, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1@Crucible1001: Firstly, not every one can afford a Sam's Club membership. Secondly, not every one lives near enough to a Sam's Club to do the bulk of their shopping there. Thirdly, you didn't include any protein in that meal plan.
- RedStateRetard, on 07/04/2008, -2/+6One State, two states

- drmangrum, on 07/04/2008, -0/+13Maybe because that is where the majority of the poor are. Most of the people in the southern states average around a 35k a year. When your choices are pre-packaged food, poor quality beef ( ground ), and hot dogs, you're probably not going to be too healthy.
- dougs55, on 07/04/2008, -4/+8Damn I can't believe California is #41. Even when I go to the gym I'm surrounded by fat people. Maybe it's the immigration that keeps the number so low.
- drmangrum, on 07/04/2008, -1/+5You obviously don't meet many Mexicans. Tortillas are not your friend. When I lived in San Antonio, it was almost an epidemic. The food there is good for a reason; you cram enough fat and carbs in, it can't help but taste good..
- dougs55, on 07/04/2008, -1/+2I meet tons of them ;) in San Jose. And I go on vacation to Isla Mujeres whenever I can afford it, and San Felipe when I can't. I was thinking maybe the Vietnamese and other Asians were driving the average down. Also Mexican immigrants are everywhere in the US these days, not just California and Texas. When I visit my brother in upstate NY it looks almost the same as San Jose in places.
- userperson, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5Well if your fat people are at the gym, that says something.
Also "fat" is relative. My friend who lives in CA now, came back to visit (live in the top ten) and said he couldn't believe how many fat people were here... I saw one or two, but didn't understand why it was note-worthy.
Part of it is perception. CA "fat" is different from top ten "fat". - jcm267, on 07/04/2008, -0/+4I live in the 3rd leanest State in the nation. There really isn't be much of a difference between 30% obese (highest) and 20% (lowest).
As for the fatties at the gym. Are they regulars and losing weight? Lots of fat people join gyms around here and go pretty frequently for like a month, then start going more sporadically until they stop going altogether. I only count the regulars when I think of who goes to my gym, and there's only a couple of obese people who go regularly.- ssn697, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2I was pretty stunned to see Montana down near the leanest. Walking around the city here, I would have never thought that. Says a lot to your first paragraph.
America is one fat country...

- kookbutt, on 07/04/2008, -16/+16Notice the top ten fattest states are also the ones with the highest black population
- haxderek, on 07/04/2008, -4/+2How is that correlated?
- userperson, on 07/04/2008, -2/+2If you don't digg this down you're a racist, because he was asking a forbidden question. /s
- huszar02, on 07/04/2008, -0/+22Black people are the ethnic group in the US with the highest obesity rates.
While some argue that it is because of the quality of food (ie cheap, processed foods) that contribute, American black culture is not as disdainful of obesity as other ethnic groups and it is in fact seen as attractive for some women. A New York Times article citing CDC data says that for black women, the rate can be as high as 50% at some ages, 40s and 50s.
States that have a large proportion of the ethnic group most likely to be obese are also likely to have higher obesity rates than some states. While that does not completely explain the discrepancy in weight differences, it most assuredly DOES have a large impact in the South.- scamper22, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2yeah, i was in university this one nerdy friend of mine used to always laugh when i saw fat rappers. He was confused how fat people could be considered that attractive and be around all these fit girls.
big pun, biggie...
It would be interesting to trace the roots of that.

- zombies187, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1I notice this list doesn't give a racial breakdown. I'm gonna go out on limb and say those lists might be similar but I doubt its the same ten in the same order. Louisiana has lost a lot of black people to other areas you know.

- scamper22, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2sorry man. I'm Canadian and travelled throughout the states.
Texas is amazing. I don't understand why people think its a backwards place. Houston, Austin, heck...even Dallas (only for work) are great places.
Not to mention the friendliness.
Now, nothing is wrong with New York or Chicago (fine cities in their own right), but the South is wonderful too. I wouldn't mind moving there myself.
- kineticworm, on 07/04/2008, -2/+10I honestly thought Texas would be on that list.

- zombies187, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Louisiana might be fat and stupid. But there has historically been a strong democratic tradition. We are a purple state. A swing state. We could go either way at any time. It depends on which side needs a nap on polling day. There are more staunchly conservative states than us.

- jkr0z, on 07/04/2008, -0/+4It is interesting how there is a correlation between the mean wealth and fatness of a state. The top 10 are all poor states while wealthier states like Connecticut and California are listed among the skinniest.
- cryptomystic, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5Uneducated = poor = eat crappy food and get fat = votes for morons like Bush.

- cryptomystic, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5Uneducated = poor = eat crappy food and get fat = votes for morons like Bush.
- metapop, on 07/04/2008, -3/+23as an american who has lived overseas in a city where i walked everywhere, i think i may have some insight to some reason why americans are overweight, and it's not eating habits or political party (i can't believe some commenters on here equate living in a red state to being fat, what a gross generalization). older towns which developed prior to cars being invented naturally evolved with walking in mind, and naturally promote a pedestrian lifestyle. i lived in budapest, and it simply didn't make sense to own a car, which is the case in many older cities. small family-owned food stores were right at the bottom of the building, as they have been for 80 years or more. the basic necessities of life could be found within 2 blocks, because that's the way it's always been there. however, as time went by, and people began to rely on cars as a part of life, cars became such a crutch that cities were designed around cars... and people became less dependant on walking. larger stores which had everything (walmart) replaced smaller local stores, and found cheaper real estate outside the city, because they knew people would be willing to drive 10 minutes to get there... but walking to these places is out of the question, and the mom and pop stores no longer exist. for the most part, not even public transportation goes there, because the vast majority of americans own cars. by simply walking as a daily part of life, i lost 20 something pounds over the first year. this is consistent with the data from the article, as the north east was developed prior to vehicles and the west coast has many more "walking" towns than any other area of the U.S.... i do believe food and habits have something to do with obesity, but i eat healthier here than i did in europe, and still managed to lose weight. basically- americans are a product of their environment which has been shaped by technology, our reliance on vehicles, and sprawl, and until a new system of living which involves walking develops, no amount of dieting will replace even a nominal amount of activity every day.
- userperson, on 07/04/2008, -0/+9Thanks for a rational analysis instead of relying on regional stereotypes to insult political officiations
Though in many of those states walking is a joke, besides the places not being set-up for it .. i.e. long distances between many locations, and lack of public transportation to bridge this gap, there is also climate to consider.
You can walk x many miles in many of these states but you'd be a sweaty mess by the time you arrived at your destination, which makes it generally impractical.
Not to engage in stereotypes myself, but regional or traditional foods do not help in many instances.
- userperson, on 07/04/2008, -0/+9Thanks for a rational analysis instead of relying on regional stereotypes to insult political officiations
- Rabbethan, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Hey, nice job Florida!
- SugarCoatedSalt, on 07/04/2008, -10/+2notice how most of them are from the south.
- Enkairi, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2I looked at the full chart. Every state has the majority of the population as obese or overweight according to the study.
here the link. http://calorielab.com/news/2008/07/02/fattest-stat ...- zombies187, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1I think the point here is to look down on people. Looking at the full chart makes everyone look bad.
- Starbuck1959, on 07/04/2008, -1/+2If we had southern-style cooking here in Seattle, we'd be among the top ten fattest, too. Thank the gods we don't.
My admittedly stereotyped idea of southerners is that they like to get together a lot. Picnic and bbq with family and whatnot. That would lead to calorie-fests as competition between cooks must be fierce. I'd rather cut off my head than spend that much time with my family, even if we had any decent cooks. Maybe that's why the southern states have so much obesity and the northern and western states don't. Maybe they can stand their relatives more? - CrushThemTorg, on 07/04/2008, -0/+5Hey, remember the same article yesterday when it wasn't blogspam?

:P - headzoo, on 07/04/2008, -1/+4These states screw the curve for the rest of us. They're the reason most people think Americans are fat. When added to nation wide stats, they bring the whole country down.
It's the same when it comes to gun violence. There really are just a handful of places where guns are out of control, but when lumped in with nation wide statistics, it makes the whole country look violent.- thedrizzle21, on 07/04/2008, -2/+1Sure, pass the blame off to someone else.

Wonder if those could have anything to do with why people are obese?- sherbertbones, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1I'm sure when you take a ***** (after 30 minutes of digesting...that), that creation will land in the toilet intact.
- woodrow8292, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Who ever servers those to the public should be put on trial for manslaughter!
I wouldn't even give it 30 mins to "digest" I would think in about 5 mins you would be feeling the pain of eating on of those!
- thedrizzle21, on 07/04/2008, -4/+5You guys bashing the south all sound like insecure, morons. The south has the highest rate of poverty in the country, so it's easy to see why things seem so messed up there. Also the reason they vote republican, lower taxes. You are all absurd. Doesn't anyone understand the concept of being a team, which the USA is, anymore. You don't just cut people off, you help them fix it and it makes you better as a whole.
***** hypocrites, the lot of you.- publiclurker, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1Help them? These inbred embarrassments are the ones that have chosen to drag themselves into the lowest category of everything they can think of, with any attempt to lift them out being met with calls of liberal meddling.
On the bright side, with transportation costs being as high as they are, it will be nice to have our own third world worker base so close. Some of them can even speak a language fairly close to English. - queenstarsha, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1i do feel sorry for poor people who think republican is their team. rich folks buy guys like rush limbaugh to convince poor people to lower rich people's taxes. that is sad, and our school system needs fixin' so poor kids end up with better critical thinking skills.

- btraxx, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Great to read after watching Nathan's Hot Dog competition.
- petrodollar, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1The "% obese" numbers seem low. I spent four days in Fayetteville, AR and saw maybe two non-fatasses during that entire time.
- mufasa, on 07/04/2008, -0/+2At first i managed to read it as "Fatteyeville".
- Orderless, on 07/04/2008, -4/+2This test was conducted using BMI ( Body Mass Index ) and it is incomplete. Your bodyfat percentage is far more telling than your weight in general. At 5'7 195lbs, I am obese according to this system. It wouldn't matter to them that I have 11% bodyfat.
- queenstarsha, on 07/05/2008, -1/+1i'm 5'8" and there's no way i will ever get to 195.
get thee to an elliptical!

- warringgael, on 07/04/2008, -1/+2I find it amazing that California, the only state with In n Out (the worlds best burgers), is also the #41 fattest. Not bad- Its amazing what plastic surgeons can do these days
- Mothh, on 07/04/2008, -0/+0http://www.in-n-out.com/locations.asp
In-N-Out is in 4 states. However, all of them rank pretty low on the map.

- lordshank, on 07/04/2008, -0/+17th and proud, now lets eat!
- Divals, on 07/04/2008, -0/+1Damn, I need to move to Mississippi. Or West Virginia. Or any state on that list... too bad there's so many rednecks and Republicans though.
