Woman's feet chemically burned by cheap Wal-Mart sandals - [PICS]
lamanaphotography.com — This woman has had her feet chemically burned (quite badly) by a pair of cheap Wal-Mart sandals she bought. She has daily photographs of the progress of the burns and has documented her attempts to get answers from Wal-Mart.

- neau, on 10/11/2007, -28/+2You're wrong to insult a whole country's production line because some small part of the articules are with bad qualiry. This is the result of a human error. My PC is made in China and it's working fine! Your sarcasm is lame.
- Starflyer59, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11And yet stereotypes exist for a reason.
- OwdenBowden, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Keep suckling on the teet of China my friend and in 15 minutes you will be hungry and then dead. CHINA is the problem.

So is your XBox360 right? I mean, if it hasn't happened to you, it must not be happening at all! Flawless! - staplez, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4No he's right. When 100% of your products are from one place, and that place has defects, you can't blame that place you need to blame the individuals in there. It's like saying everyone in USA is evil because George Bush is president.
- miriclaire, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2You mean that's not true?

You are out of your mind. Have you been paying attention to what the hell has been going on with the products coming from China? Everything we use comes from CHINA. It is all made like crap and no seems to pose a health hazard to each and everyone of us - all so that investors can make a bigger profit. I say - let her have her legal day in court. She got burned bad and I do think the manufacturer, importer and sales agent all have a responsibility to make sure the products they are creating and selling do not cause harm (or Death in the case of the toothpaste and animal food poisoning).
I think we have way too many lawsuits in this country and I am not big on suing but If that was your kid, wife, family member you would want to take action. - AshTR, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I think I'm going to be sick. That last picture is so nasty.
- luft, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20This isn't a chemical burn. It's contact dermatitis-an ALLERGIC REACTION. (I know she says she isn't allergic to rubber or latex, it is probably some other product in the material that is doing it) That's why you aren't hearing stories about thousands of people getting these burns from walmart sandals. Because they don't do this to the vast majority of people. Pure hype.
- cpk121, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1Exactly! Story buried as inaccurate....
- CalmLlama, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16Allergic reactions stop when the material is removed from the skin. If it is a reaction it is from some sort of persistent chemical that has leeched into the skin, but that would have spread farther than the strap. Also, allergic reactions don't look like that and often don't leave scars unless its some sort of toxic chemical with an allergic reaction.
- senatorpjt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I'm allergic to a chemical I use at work, and if I get it on my hands, they blister and scab over and itch INTENSELY. Oddly enough, it's used to make plastics.
http://www.ndcrt.org/data/EPA_Chemical_Fact_Sheets/Diepoxybutane.html - arcthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7You mean like how if you stop touching poison oak, the rash goes away?
Riiiight. There is such a thing, I hate to break it to you, as chemicals that can leach into you skin but are harmless unless you are allergic.

- Shorties, on 10/11/2007, -19/+10Yeah thats what I was thinking (And then confirmed when I read it). Why is China doing this? First the pet food then toothpaste now cheap plastic goods, whats next!? When will it end!? and are they trying to start a war?
- zydeco, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31It will end when you (meaning the general public) stop shopping at Wal-Mart, or any other store, just because the prices are "cheapest" without paying attention to the origin and composition of the goods.
- JoeDiggsIt, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13I'm sorry but that's just not going to happen.
- ScottMaximus1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I refuse to shop at Wal-Mart to begin with, so I'm apparently ahead of the game

- HPSauce, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2The chinese are responsible for everything. Global warming, poisoned goods, bloody wars - who invented gunpowder, hence making killing someone a thoughtless task instead of something close and personal (which may change the aggressor's mind)? Yup, the chinese.

Yeah, I was taking the piss.
The comment system is impossible to use in firefox - literally kills the program. It used to be cumbersome to load before, but at least everything was done and dusted afterwards and you can browse it. Now, it takes a while to load but you have to click 500 times to see specific posts by users.

- digggggggggg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22I'm here wondering: what the hell is wrong with these people? Don't they know that their cutting of every corner is going to screw someone else over?
- 5lectro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14The same can be said of people that shop at Wal-mart, except they screw themselves over.
- siszam, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Yeah they know. They don't care. Just the government with lack of healthcare and a war in Iraq. If you profit it doesn't matter. Doing the right thing to people like that means lining their pockets. China knows it has America by the balls. It's not like America will suddenly start manufacturing products again and stop buying china crap. Companies might have to pay a living wage or something.
- aylwin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+57Makes you wonder what happened to the hands of the kid making those sandals.
- jsmith39, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19Well yeah, now it does. Thanks.
- RussellDovey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Or the lungs of the people mixing the chemicals to make the sandals.
- aikimann, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12I've been hearing more and more about bad products from China. Are the companies selling these products based in the US? If so, then it's not China's fault who the product is manufactured. Seems like people have been trying to scapegoat China. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
- bytecolor, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Wal-Mart should be required to fly a huge Chinese flag above each store. The sight of the American flag flying above a Wal-Mart sickens me.
- enchantedsky, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2***** racists on Digg.
How many of you have slippers with Made in China logos on the bottom. Check right now, I dare you. It's not like it says Made in England on it, or it would cost $100 so the Brits can buy their Fish and Chips, but save money by not buying toothbrushes
This lady is obviously an ISOLATED INCIDENT. Obviously, other people with slippers made in China do not have burning feet, so this is as isolated as it gets.- PotoinMan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Is it just me or is that comment kinda hypocritical?
- califortune, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1your brain seems pretty isolated, you cold-heart.
- CalmLlama, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Mine are teva, and made in "costa rica." They are also the best pair of footwear i have ever owned, the only thing that comes close are my danners, which are made in the usa.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You don't say! I am from Costa Rica (but I don't make sandals)
- Twisty, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3So it's wrong to say things about the Chinese, but it's okay to say things about white people, and it's not racist, Oh yes gotta love them double standards.
- senatorpjt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I don't own any slippers. My shoes were made in Minnesota. Then again, point taken, they cost $150. But, I bought them because I got tired of having to buy a new pair of ***** $10 chinese shoes every month.
- JEdwardFuck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Yea, probably is made in china, just like the other 90% of the stuff you own. LCD Monitors, iPods, cloths.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Walmart wont buy products made in america. Costs to much.

- ImNotDrewCurtis, on 10/11/2007, -7/+90That's more than disturbing. I wonder what sort of special ingredients the manufacturer put in the mix. What did they find in toothpaste earlier this year? Antifreeze stuff?
At any rate, I'd like to see a follow up on this article.- aliengoods, on 10/11/2007, -5/+31I'm reading these threads and don't understand why people are surprised. Wal-mart doesn't care about you or any other customer, and they have the lawyers to fend off any possible lawsuit. I've completely stopped shopping at Wal-mart. I probably spend an extra $40 per month on various goods at places like Target, Home Depot, K-Mart, etc, but the quality is much higher than Wal-mart. I bought a stainless steel tea kettle at Wal-mart. The spot welds on the handle busted off after a week of use. There is no quality in that store anymore.
- ScrewedThePooch, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18anymore?
- billymumphrey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah, there's no quality in Wal-Mart... they do sell Zunes and iPods afterall...
- senatorpjt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1The offending chemical is most likely either a plasticizer, unpolymerized starting material, or residual catalyst.

- Aroundtheworls, on 10/11/2007, -25/+43Someone hoping for a laaaarge payout perhaps?
- BobMysterioso, on 10/11/2007, -7/+11a laaaarge payout will not come her way if she continued to wear the shoes. There is something called "the responsibility to mitigate damages". If she did continue to wear them then she contributed to it significantly, and would likely receive just whatever was determined she should get based on her images. This would obviously settle out of court for a thousand or so dollars. But everyone likes to think everyone likes to sue for millions.
Lets say, she gets gangrene and has to have some toes amputated. At what point would her sueing be "OK". I'm just curious to see what the collective things on this.- miriclaire, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2She needs the money to pay for a pedicure!

She didn't keep wearing them, the burn just kept getting worse. If you don't treat a chemical burn it doesn't just go away. Plus she thought it was just irritation. She only wore them for two days and then stopped after she realized it was more serious than some simple skin rash.- hinnatakun, on 10/11/2007, -14/+0he ment regular SHOES not the flip flops........
- Aroundtheworls, on 10/11/2007, -25/+43Someone hoping for a laaaarge payout perhaps?
- NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -4/+69I don't think she continued to wear them... It may be that whatever chemical caused the burn is not easily removed with soap and water and may still be there, continuing to burn her.
- SteelFrog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Yep. If you've ever gotten a chemical burn, you'd know it lasts for a long, long time and all you can do is disinfect, vitamin E and pray it doesn't leave you scarred. If you've ever gotten a bad case of athlete's foot, it's pretty close except it hurts like hell.
- adolfojp, on 10/11/2007, -6/+23Perhaps she has no health insurance.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/11/2007, -24/+3Then she should have gotten some. It amazes me that people buy a TV and a new car, but they won't buy health insurance. Ever heard the phrase, "At least you have your health"?
- gernblansted, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23It amazes me that some people don't understand how expensive health insurance is for a single individual or family not covered by a larger plan from an employer or other established group. It also amazes me that there are still people out there who think anyone can just buy health insurance when in fact if you have any pre-existing conditions or are too old (or... or... or... list is just to big to post here) you will be turned away with no recourse. It amazes me that the marketing paid for by insurance companies and HMOs is so effective as to confuse people into believing that anyone can have insurance it if they just worked and chose to purchase it. And who really needs a car anyway? This country has plenty of mass transit. In some cities. At least in the past. Well, there's always the Bus. Which stops 2 miles from here, and will only get you within 3 miles of your work. I've had that happen to me before.
- longbow486, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4try telling that to the Mass state gov, they just made it a law that every single person living in the state has to have health insurance, even if their employer doesnt have it. but if you dont have it, all you do is have to pay 200 dollars at the end of the year and your good
- drakenlot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10It amazes me that US has such ***** health policies.

- TheNapalm, on 10/11/2007, -12/+32thats pretty bad, walmart is going downhill, i guess the shouldnt rely on chinese sweat shop labor for their cheap ass products anymore
- ELCad, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3cheap ass overpriced products that is
- onlyclave, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8But dude, if they don't use cheap cheap chiggity China labor where are they going to get their low low prices that keep falling? And BTW, Walmart was never "uphill". It's always sucked. Americans need to pull their heads out of their collective asses and stop shopping there.
- senatorpjt, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2There's nothing wrong with Walmart in itself. You know, walking in there, that a generic $2 pair of Chinese shoes is going to be *****. However, if you're buying name brand stuff, it's the exact same ***** you'd get anywhere else.
- giid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1But that's the thing, even most of the "name brand" stuff at Wal-Mart isn't your usual name brand stuff. A lot of manufacturers have a special Wal-Mart line of products that are cheaper because Wal-Mart demands the lower prices. Some things are probably the same tho, DVDs, CDs, batteries?, electronics with model names found at other stores and online, but I'm weary of pretty much anything else.
Of course this is all word of mouth, but I tend to believe it. If I want a quality product that I want to last, the last place I look is Wal-Mart--I've gotten burned too many times. - arcthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I think the people who get burned by walmart are not so much getting burned by walmart as they are by their own innate inability to be a discerning buyer. Cheap crap is cheap crap no matter where you buy it. A Duracell batter is a Duracell battery, no matter where you buy it, and the Pepsi they sell at walmart is the same pepsi they sell at 7-11 or, I dunno, whatever gucci outlet grocery store assholes shop at these days, because they wouldn't be caught dead in walmart.
Where does high society buy their Pepsi these days?
- giid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1But that's the thing, even most of the "name brand" stuff at Wal-Mart isn't your usual name brand stuff. - billymumphrey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0What's up with all the China bashing going on here... your fancy iPod is made in China, Apple fanboys. You ***** hypocrites.
- mazerrackham, on 10/11/2007, -7/+195Sweet. I'm headed over to walmart right now to "try on" some sandals. I'll just shuffle around the store in them for a few hours...you know, give the chemical plenty of time to disfigure my feet. I can't see this being anything but profitable in the long run.
- metric7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24hope your a chick cause they were women's sandals ; )
- TrevorBelmont, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I'd spring for the $2.88 if that's your plan, albeit an ill advised plan. Nice hard evidence that it was THOSE flip flops. If this thing goes class action, you might be able to get away with just the receipt and no foot burns!
- kingcam, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2And then the walmart lawyers will prove that you didnt buy the sandals (and are probably a man) and you spent hours walking around the store with them on; the logical conclusion is that you knew what they could do to you. Therefor you will lose your lawsuit because you accepted the risks involved with the sandals.
- moses48, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1Unless you're allergic to latex, don't expect much.
- jessicass, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2She stated very clearly that she is not alleric to latex. Besides an allerica reaction and a chemical burn have vastly different outcomes, as you can see from the pictures.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You'd better hope the lawsuit makes some serious money, because you'll have to take a month off work for those burns to heal.
Unless you work at home, or can get a ride to work and sit at a computer all day.
- jason469, on 10/11/2007, -11/+9WTF?
Wow, that's crazy. Wal-mart should look into that ASAP, before other people start getting burns and sue the crap out of them. - tinker123, on 10/11/2007, -34/+149Walmart needs to be held responsible, but wasn't it unintelligent to keep putting those sandals back on day after day after noticing what they were doing?
- merreborn, on 10/11/2007, -4/+41"Well, after wearing them my feet would be red and sort of tingly, but I figured that it was just because it was first flip flops of the year so my feet need to get used to them... I have only worn those shoes 15 minutes here, half an hour there, hour there...and so on, NOT enough time to burn my feet like this!"
Sounds like she stopped once it progressed to a state where it got really bad. A really caustic chemical on your skin will continue to eat away at you for days after exposure.- Kardall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Ya it would be nice to get an analysis on what kind of chemical it is. I scanned over the post, but didn't see if she'd taken them into a lab or gone to a doctor to analyze what it is on her skin.
- CalmLlama, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3If it were me, i would assume they were safe until i had hard evidence otherwise. It isn't the consumers responsibility to test the products they buy to see if they will cause serious bodily harm.
Also, she couldn't even afford to go to a real doctor, so i doubt she has taken them to a lab yet. Suing people takes a lot of up front money unless you find a lawyer who takes pity on you and gives you a front. - jedi851508, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Wal-Mart "needs" to be held responsible because a product they sell may cause a reaction in 2 out of 1,000,000 cases? All the company does is approve the initial purchase. Wal-Mart is not responsible for QA of the other 1,000,000, that's the manufacturer's problem. Take it up with them.
- merreborn, on 10/11/2007, -4/+41"Well, after wearing them my feet would be red and sort of tingly, but I figured that it was just because it was first flip flops of the year so my feet need to get used to them... - lonegeek, on 10/11/2007, -5/+77"...I figured that it was just because it was first flip flops of the year so my feet need to get used to them. "
Maybe you should have read the story.- theholycow, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9"She's been documenting the process as the chemical burns get worse and worse."
...but she hasn't stopped wearing them.
"this started on June 22nd 2007 and has just gotten worse basically. I have only worn those shoes 15 minutes here, half an hour there, hour there...and so on, NOT enough time to burn my feet like this!"
So...maybe something else is burning her feet?
...Then I saw the pictures and the first thought was "wow, it really is the flip-flops", immediately followed by "the stupid idiot keeps wearing them" and "she got that kind of burns and thought maybe it was just a rash from her first flip-flops of the year?"
Now I wonder why she's the only one. They've sold an awful lot of those, I'm sure, and she's had them for long enough and hasn't worn them much; I'm sure thousands or millions of people have worn them more...so why aren't we hearing about other cases?- MISDIREK7ED, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6"Now I wonder why she's the only one."
From the Consumerist article: "Has this happened to anyone else? Kerry says another woman emailed her to say she also had chemical burns on her feet from the flip flops. Anyone else? Both woman supposedly bought the flip flops from Walmart in April."
She should really scan that email into her webpage for more proof.. There was also a very good comment on the Consumerist from a doctor who said it appeared to be contact dermatitis. "That's not a chemical burn. That's allergic contact dermatitis. Of course it's not gonna go away even after 11 days, because you keep wearing them. Stop putting them on, and it'll go away."
Duh.- theholycow, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Yeah, that one wouldn't load until after I posted that comment. Still, if it was some widespread chemical burn issue that is really so bad, I'd expect more than two people to have the problem. Sounds like a jerk with a latex allergy to me.
- GiggleStick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Link to that comment, sounds pretty credible to me.

Has she been to a doctor?
- MISDIREK7ED, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6"Now I wonder why she's the only one."
- arcthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0You know, I wear flip-flops all the frikkin time and I have never - not once - had any sort of rash from any of them, no matter how new or old they were, with one exception, and that was a heat rash. I mean, I know that anecdotal evidence is as good as science on Digg, so I'm assuming my claim must have equal weight as hers.
Rash on your feet from new flip-flops? Not really normal.
- theholycow, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9"She's been documenting the process as the chemical burns get worse and worse."
- rickyroca, on 10/11/2007, -18/+6My guess is that once she noticed the burn she thought of two courses of action.
1. stop wearing them because they are hurting her feet and see a doctor or try an over the counter treatment
2. continue wearing them to make the burn worse so that she could bring the case to the public and sue WalMart for big dollars.
In her mind some foot pain and bad looking feet would be well worth the $$$ she could get from a lawsuit.- MISDIREK7ED, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Maybe she is like every other woman on earth, and got her shoes about two sizes too small..
Also, don't buy shoes that cost less than 3$.. you are just begging to come into contact with ***** synthetic materials.

I'll cry like a sissy and bite into a sock to keep from yelling in pain, only to get my face and lips burned off. - 16777216, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23After reading TFA it would seem that she thought the uncomfortableness was due to her feet "needing to get used to them" and was unaware the flip-flops were burning her feet, as a mater of fact she thought it was a rash until a second woman who had the same problem informed her that it was a chemical burn.
- gregdogum, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2Well, if the chick knew the sandals were doing something to her feet (causing either rash, burn or whatever the ***** it was doing) then should have stopped wearing the ***** sandals regardless of any thing. So if the sandals were only causing a RASH and not a BURN, was she going to continue wearing the sandals? Makes no ***** sense as to why you would continue to do something that was obviously causing harm to yourself.
So whatever dude.- Terr01, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Read the freaking article. The burns continued to get worse (e.g. absorbed chemical in skin still reacting) even after she stopped using the sandals.

- phorcys, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2All shoes hurt when you first wear them. It's especially true of sandals, but even $600 shoes tear your feet up at first.
- Goombellaofgoom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Then you need to look harder. I don't buy a pair of shoes that isn't pretty comfortable from the start. Some decent brands for me are Skechers, New Balance, Asics, and Easy Spirit. Crocs (sandals and clogs) are really good, too.
- houndeyex, on 10/11/2007, -4/+53"Does this look infected?"

This is what a chemical burn looks like:
http://www.pediatrics.wisc.edu/education/derm/tutb/33.html
She has a classic story of contact dermatitis, which is an allergic reaction to something in the sandals
http://www.allergycapital.com.au/Pages/contactderm.html
Buried as inaccurate, - chemicalrxn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The first thing I thought of was a rash caused by some solvent squished out of the sole of the sandal. I have had one or two (caused by drying out the skin really), an couple drops of sulfuric acid on my skin and a little lye burn too for fun. This is a really gross alergic reaction. I'm quite sure of it.

She has a good case against the manufacturer of those shoes. Is she going to sue for millions? Maybe, would she be justified? No likely not.
If however, they find out that this company and ultimately Walmart knew about this danger and decided to sell them anyway. And memos and emails from within backed this up, then yea - she has a strong strong case against them both. Claiming everyone is "sue happy" as many do is some what absurd. Suing an organization when they ***** you up is one of your only courses of action. Sure, some abuse it, but there are times, not saying this is one of them, where it is the only means.
Besides, you can't sue Wal-Mart. They are the largest organized company in the history of the world. They have more lawyers on retainer than lawyers in that woman's city.- shark615, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2read the article she kept wearing them "for an hour here half an hour there"

Not for me though, I shop at Target! Same tactics as Walmart, slightly better image for some reason.

I actually got the exact same sandals from walmart and they were one of the most comfortable pair of sandals I've ever worn.- watermelongunn, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0I too have purchased $3 flip-flops from Walmart and they lasted at least a year. I didn't wear them non-stop or anything, but if you ask me that's one hell of a deal. These Walmart stories pop up and you have to wonder, with it being the most shopped at store on the planet, why is this only happening to one person? Anomaly, maybe? ***** happens. If Walmart didn't exist another company exactly like it would be the recipient of all the misguided hatred.

Remember, when you first buy a new pair of shoes, especially flipflops, you expect a little irritation, so it's easy to see how she might have kept wearing them a few days.before it became obvious it was more than the ususal irritation.- theholycow, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11Once she started taking pictures to document the progress, I think it's safe to say she knew that they were harming her more than the usual irritation.
- jessicass, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8It is also stated in the article that by the time she was taking the pictures she had stopped wearing them. At the point she stopped wearing them it was mild irritation that she was starting to link to the sandals.
- mahdaeng, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3Uh, no. If a new pair of shoes causes irritation, you bought the wrong pair of shoes.
- maglam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Not at all. Whenever I buy a new pair of flip flops I always get some irritation until the flip flops have been broken in. And regardless of whether she continued wearing them or not after irritation occurred, the fact that the flip flops did that much damage AT ALL is ridiculous.
- Badnewsbear, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Uh, no, you're an idiot if you don't realize new shoes will usually, if not ALWAYS cause irritation. That's why you hear people talking about breaking in things like new high heels or other shoes (such as men's dress shoes). What do you think blisters are caused from? Usually after breaking them in, shoes will no longer cause irritation. Though high heels, in my opinion, cause irritation all the time.
- burnswhenipee, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0WTF.
You're comparing stretching shoes out so that they don't cause blisters to freaking flip-flops causing irritation over the entire area that touches the skin? One is caused by friction and is normal, the other is caused by something undiagnosed and god damn nasty looking. Do you even realize how retarded your argument is? - Senseicads, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Man she stopped wearing them when she realised that the irritation was more than just minor new shoe irritation ( or flip flop in this case). I got through the last 5 or so people saying why the ***** did she keep wearing the flipflops before posting just because people don't RTFA!!!

- Aroundtheworls, on 10/11/2007, -3/+76Looks like she's allergic to the Polyurethane upper in the sandal as the bottom is made from EVA foam and she doesn't seem to have the same reaction. If this was something specific to the sandals then we'd see an epidemic of this happening as I'm sure Wal-Mart sold these things by the millions.
She should see an allergy specialist... And getting a pedicure wouldn't hurt too!- brhad56, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4If you read the article, it shoots down the allergic reaction theory. Definitely a chemical burn
- Aroundtheworls, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8The article just says it's a chemical burn, taking her word for it. In the comments is a reply from a doctor:
"I'm an MD.
That's not a chemical burn. That's allergic contact dermatitis. Of course it's not gonna go away even after 11 days, because you keep wearing them. Stop putting them on, and it'll go away.
Consult a dermatologist and he/she will say the same thing.

"What Allergic Contact Dermatitis Looks Like:
In initial (acute) severe cases such as poison ivy, the skin gets red, itchy, swollen, and develops tiny blisters, which may break and leave crusts and scales"" - jrefenes, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7It said she's not allergic to Latex or Rubber. However, there are many types of rubber and many types of Polymers that she may be allergic to. Furthermore, it could be a chemical burn, but from a chemical that most people do not react to.
Either way, she should have gotten a professional's opinion in the matter.- rhartman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4SHE says she's not allergic to Latex or Rubber because quote, "I have been wearing flip-flops all my life."
Newsflash - not all Flip-Flops will have the same ingredients or quantity of latex or rubber. Newsflash #2 - Allergies and what you are allergic to can change over the course of your lifetime. You can out-grow allergies that you had as a child, and as crappy as it sounds, yes, you can develop allergies as an adult that you never had previously. And a chemical burn is a chemical burn, the severity does not vary based on individuals. Battery acid is a good example. Fred is going to burn just as badly as Sally.

- arcthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0She just wants to stop the product from being sold, even though short of one person who emailed her, who may or may not have been lying, this is not at all a common occurance, all because she, as far as I'm concerned, only she ever had this problem.
You know, this reminds me of this time when I was working in student government at my local community college, and we were making green rootbeer floats for St. Patricks days. Some lady who I swear must have just crawled out from under a tree comes up to me and says, "You know, what you guys are doing is really immoral - Food coloring is known to cause cancer and kill people on the spot. I wouldn't be surprised if you ended up with a lawsuit on your hands!" So, you know, I looked it up, and it turns out some people can be killed by food coloring, all though from what I read nothing we were using had ever been suggested to cause cancer, but the catch is this - now, wait for it - it only kills people who are allergic. Man, that would have been a fun lawsuit. "My child drank a root beer float with food coloring and DIED from an allergic reaction! I don't want money, I just want food coloring banned!" That makes 1/1000000000 that dies from food coloring. My god, it's an epidemic.

Anyway first of all in one pic she looks like she has dog that is practically licking her foot. Good idea.
Secondly she didn't get a proper doctors or professionals opinion. It could be an infection or more likely a severe allergic reaction to latex or something.
Just saying chemical burn with no comprehensive proof is stupid.- mcse2k3, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3the dog licking her foot isn't going to hurt anything dumbass... it's an old remedy
- NoNameHere, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That's for bacterial infections, though. Dog saliva evolved to be good at that because of the things they eat.
- shark615, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3WHAT?
An old remedy are ***** INSANE!? If a dog licking a wound was a good thing then it would be recommended but it is not, because bacteria = bad.
Dogs eat their own ***** not to mention dig around in dirt, chew on stuff and put almost anything into their mouth not to mention leaving them open all the time. Yes according to Mythbusters a dogs mouth maybe cleaner then a humans but introducing ANY sort of external bacteria in a wound is a BAD idea. So the only dumb ass here is someone that beleives having an animal lick their wounds is beneficial.
Again. Bacteria + Open wound = BAD.
- faskippy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1O.K., dip. She said she wasn't allergic to latex. She DID get a doctors ruling saying it was a chemical burn. RTFA.

- DecoyQ, on 10/11/2007, -16/+17I agree with Error601. How many millions of people have bought these and haven't had a problem? Cut the crap woman, you are allergic to that material and your stupid ass kept wearing them. I hope they make get tested at your doctor for this. I really hate ignorant people that won't take responsibility for themselves.
- awhiteflame, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1I would doubt if -millions- bought these.
- beanlambert, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3It's NOT an allergic reaction. An allergy would be a rash which would slowly spread beyond the edge of the strap. This is a chemical burn, which is why the affected area is constrained to the straps, and the swelling is due to the body responding to the affected area, not caused by allergy.
- SpikeZ, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contact_dermatitis
"Allergic dermatitis is usually confined to the area where the trigger actually touched the skin"
ie. it doesn't usually spread beyond the contact point, and if she stopped wearing the damn things it would have healed much sooner.
Personally I think she's fishing for a lawsuit -- buried.- harpwn, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3she stopped wearing them rtfa.

- BleedingHollow, on 10/11/2007, -12/+17Walmart prey on the poor. I wish people would stop buying stuff from there.
- 40hands, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Agreed...however people nowadays are in the mindset that cheap = good. Why? Because it's cheap of course! They fail to realize that when they have to buy the product over and over again because it keeps breaking, that it's no longer cheap. There is also the fact that Wal-Mart will mark up certain products in their stores well above what other stores charge because people just believe that everything at Wally world is cheaper.
- hockey, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8No they don't. The simple fact is many name brand products are simply cheaper there than most other places. For example name brand diapers are cheaper at Wal-Mart than they are at other places. I know because I've been buying Pampers brand diapers for 5 years for my kids of various ages. Diapers are already expensive enough I see no reason to pay more simply for the "privilege" of buying them from Target or somewhere else. I buy Wal-Mart brand juice because juice is just juice and I see no reason to pay name brand prices on something as simple as apple juice. I also see no reason to pay higher prices on things like bread, milk etc when the Wal-Mart brand is just as good.
There's nothing wrong with Wall-Mart. Nothing at all. Stop being so melodramatic. - AladinSane, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4"Walmart preys on the poor"? In what way? By providing them with affordable food and clothing? I swear, do people like you put ANY thought into what you're saying before you say it? Yeah, maybe "the poor" should start shopping at Bloomingdales as an alternative. *eyes rolled* Furthermore, dumbass, I make about 130k a year, which doesn't make me rich, but certainly doesn't make me "poor". I shop at Walmart for the same reason most other people do: It's convenient, and I really don't give a damn about the snotty "Walmart is teh suck!!" idiocy that so many Online people espouse. I shop where the hell I feel like shopping, and if you don't like it, you can blow me.
- BleedingHollow, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Walmart is the evil of america. They are the number one independent retailer in America yet, the people who work for Walmart can't even afford benefits from them, Walmart makes the benefits more expensive then the average paycheck. Hmm that's nice screw everyone that works there so that more people can save right?? Also when walmart price gouge they make smaller retailers go out of business (lose of jobs, more people on unemployment, and even more people with no healthcare.) Also Walmart was the number one reason that the minimum wage did not go up, had it did poor people would have to pay a higher % on there income then the rich. Support mom and pop places, support stores that take care of there employees, and stop going after the cheapest thing at Walmart.
