- thebusdriver, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2Ya but hes still way better at hockey than youll ever be.

- MikeonTV, on 12/21/2007, -11/+11The future of Hockey looks alot better than when The Great One was in his third year!
- ozid, on 12/21/2007, -7/+10Gretzky's points totals in his first 2 years in the NHL: 137, 164
Crosby: 102, 120
How does he look "a lot" better? I'm a total penguins fan but they aren't even similar in playing style.- sardion2000, on 12/21/2007, -3/+10Average goals per game in the 80s were insanely high because the goalies and goalie equipment sucked balls. 102 in 2005/06 > 137 in 1979/80
- ozid, on 12/21/2007, -1/+5Well, being a goalie, I will tell you its not the goaltenders that sucked. It's the size of the net vs their equipment. Ya it was easier then, but Crosby isn't to the Penguins what Gretzky was to the Oilers (even more so this season). He's a great player, no doubt. But Gretzky basically scored goals using other peoples' sticks. Crosby's game is more focused on team playing. He's like a keystone, and Gretzky was the entire arch.
Crosby is better in some aspects, but it's stupid to say that he looks a lot better. Its like comparing Jerome Bettis in football to Barry Sanders. - sardion2000, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2Well I'm a Leafs fan so I guess that's why I thought all goalies sucked back then lmao.
- SuperMoses, on 12/22/2007, -0/+7ozid, no... goalies were not as good in the 80s. It wasn't just size and equipment, it was style. Gretzky was scoring on stand up goalies where scoring a shot from the blueline with no screen was common. Goaltending improved once the Patrick Roy influenced goalies started coming into the league in the 90s with their butterfly stance. Another factor is the neutral zone trap made popular by the NJ Devils in 95.
I don't believe the net sizes were any different in the 80s then they are now, so I don't see how this changes anything. And, in the NHL with the goalie equipment changes, I believe they are close to the equipment size of the 80s.
Also, Gretzky being everything to the Oilers is not entirely true. They still won a cup the year he got traded. Remember, the Oilers were stacked with stars. Gretzky, Messier, Anderson, Kurri, Coffey, Fuhr, Lowe, etc. Gretzky was their best player without a doubt, but obviously they were still able to win a cup without him, so they didn't "rely" solely on Gretzky, they had many other key players.
I agree with you that you can't compare them. It's two different eras.- grrrrrrrrrrrrrr, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Gretzky is the greatest so far, no doubt, and achieved with a very talented supporting cast and an army of protectors...but still, I don't recall The Great One getting up into anyone's grill like Sid did there so early. Gotta like the Howe comparison...only Ted Lindsay as a model could be nicer
- santaliqueur, on 12/21/2007, -7/+2Way to put words in his mouth, nobody ever said HE was as good as Gretzky. Nice try though.
Plus, there were way more goals being scored back then. If only Mario Lemieux had a healthy career, and enforcers sticking up for him his entire career. Nobody would be kissing Gretzky's ass.- ozid, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3considering people call him "the future of hockey" and the whole "story" is about Sidney, I think my drawing that conclusion isn't considered putting words in his mouth.
- SuperMoses, on 12/21/2007, -1/+3Spoken like a true hockey newb. You can't even compare the goalies of the 80s with the goalies of today. The stand up goalies of the 80s are dead, it's much harder to beat today's goalies. Overall scoring has gone down since the 80s and early 90s.
- ozid, on 12/22/2007, -1/+1Fool I am a goalie and have been playing for 15 years. I admit I made the mistake of not taking that into consideration, but like I said somewhere else in this thread, Gretzky caused goals to happen. Crosby gives others more opportunity to score. He's more of a team player.
- sardion2000, on 12/21/2007, -3/+10Average goals per game in the 80s were insanely high because the goalies and goalie equipment sucked balls. 102 in 2005/06 > 137 in 1979/80
- davidrools, on 12/21/2007, -3/+13when Gretzky was in his 3rd year he had his still-record-holding 92 goal season. are you being sarcastic? Crosby is good but nowhere near as good as Gretzky.
- sardion2000, on 12/21/2007, -5/+5Different era budz. Average goals per game in the 80s were insanely high because the goalies and goalie equipment sucked balls. 102 in 2005/06 > 137 in 1979/80
- winmywii, on 12/21/2007, -0/+6I don't think you can compare the two players. The game was different in Greatsky's time than it is now. Sid is top of the new era though.
- trc0, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3blasphemy
- MikeonTV, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2My point is the hype guys. Sorry you were confused. Never have we had such HYPE about any player than we do now. I believe it is just cause too. Watching Sid play to my little brother reminds me of what it was like to see The Great One. My brother an I are 15 years age difference.
- ozid, on 12/21/2007, -7/+10Gretzky's points totals in his first 2 years in the NHL: 137, 164
- zero, on 12/21/2007, -3/+6Nice job Sid
- bingobongony, on 12/21/2007, -41/+4Why is this news? Hell, if you want to link to sport shighlights (since there is no other place on the internet to get those), why not link to an ACTUAL hat trick. And even better, a 5 goal game? One happened last night.
- cusoman, on 12/21/2007, -1/+6Gaborik is the man. 5 goals (and an assist on the 6th goal) is amazing... good job Gabby!
- JoWiGo, on 12/22/2007, -3/+3Because Digg is a news sight... even if it does have a bias towards technology. 5 goal games happen relatively often, a Gordie Howe Hat-Trick does not, and the man who got it is one of the leagues upcoming all-stars.
- cusoman, on 12/22/2007, -1/+3Relatively often? It's been 11 years since someone has scored 5 goals in a game. Now the NHL was formed in 1917.... you do the math.
- bingobongony, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1I am guessing it may have happened a LITTLE more frequently that every 11 years in the past though. Especially during the 80s/early 90s with Gretzky and Lemieux. Especially the Oilers dynasty era with Gretzky, Messier, Coffey etc. Then again, I would bet the Goride Howe Hat Trick may have happened a bit more frequently then too, since players weren't quite as specialized back then. While players like Gretzky didn't get into many fights, a lot more decent scorers (15-20 goals a season, 40 assists) were not ones to shy away from fighting. So chances are more players got all three in a game more often than now.
- bingobongony, on 12/22/2007, -1/+5Thanks for showing how ignorant you are about hockey. the "Gordie Howe hat tracik" happens FAR more often than 5 goals in one game. This is not even the first time THIS SEASON that someone has gotten a goal, assit and a 5 minute major in a game.
Now, since you are so ignorant about hokcey...why on earth did you come to this thread and try to act like you have any idea what you are talking about?- bingobongony, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2Oh, for the record, before Crosby, the previous "Gordie Howe Hat Trck" happened TWO WEEKS AGO. As opposed to 11 years ago when the last 5 goal game happened.
- tim04, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3gordie howe hat tricks happen all the time, and are even done by mediocre players. all you gotta do is score a goal, an assist, then punch someone. almost every game has got at least one player fulfilling the first two criteria. 5 goals a game pretty much do not EXIST in the new NHL. sorry big guy but you're a douche bag
- cusoman, on 12/22/2007, -1/+3Relatively often? It's been 11 years since someone has scored 5 goals in a game. Now the NHL was formed in 1917.... you do the math.

- desmondregan, on 12/21/2007, -31/+4crosby is a ***** fag the biggest pussy in the league him and he cries one out of two games you clearly know nothing of the sort
- tim04, on 12/22/2007, -1/+4no ***** nuts, you're a complete retard. the ONLY reason fans don't like crosby is because they're jealous that their team doesn't have someone as insanely young and good as him. if my team had crosby, i wouldn't give a flying ***** if he cries every game as long as he puts up 3 point nights...which of course he does pretty much every other night. why don't you do us all a favor and stop watching hockey...clearly you don't understand the sport. i heartedly recommend baseball or figure skating.
- FadieZ, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2Or curling.
- tim04, on 12/25/2007, -0/+1i dunno man, curling can get pretty hardcore. I've seen many a grown man cry over his stones.
- ryptide, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Cindy has one fight and all of a sudden he's a real man? Not hardly. Hopefully this just opens it up a bit for those that have been pulling up on him to subdue the wrath of Bettman and he can start getting his crybaby ass handed to him on a more regular basis.
- Thinkingbuddy, on 12/21/2007, -52/+2Who cares, its hockey.

- finista, on 12/21/2007, -13/+44I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out...
- Shanktown, on 12/21/2007, -9/+1I see what you did there....
- selfdisplaced, on 12/21/2007, -6/+4must have been one of the flyers games?
- Funpolice2050, on 12/22/2007, -3/+2Must have been in Soviet Russia.
- Halokhan, on 12/21/2007, -3/+19About time Sid did some fighting of his own, Laraque can't protect him forever.
- santaliqueur, on 12/21/2007, -8/+7Why not, Gretzky was shielded his entire career. Nice to know Sid's got some balls. Gretzky was always a puss.
- Morphinity, on 12/21/2007, -0/+10Get the ***** out. Apparently, you don't appreciate talented players regardless of whether they get into fights.
By the way, Gretzky fought Neil Broten.- santaliqueur, on 12/21/2007, -5/+2I appreciate real hockey players, and Gretzky was a pussy of the highest regard. Offensively gifted for sure, but that's where his talent ends. When I thin of a real hockey player, I think of Mario Lemieux.
By the way, his little hissyfit with Neal Broten, you're calling that a fight? He was skating backwards pretty quickly, probably scared *****. Then dropped his gloves before Broten even knew Gretzky wanted to fight. Then Broten tossed him around for a few seconds before it got broken up. BFD.- SuperMoses, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2Then people went back to forgetting who Broten was.
- brownsound00, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Man, Gretzky was pure class. He didn't need to resort to fights, he'd just destroy the other team by himself by getting a hat trick and blowing by the whole team, twice, in one play.
In my opinion, that is much more demeaning then getting your ass kicked in a fight. If i got the ***** dangled out of me by someone.. that would be worse to me then losing a fight.
- santaliqueur, on 12/21/2007, -5/+2I appreciate real hockey players, and Gretzky was a pussy of the highest regard. Offensively gifted for sure, but that's where his talent ends. When I thin of a real hockey player, I think of Mario Lemieux.
- sardion2000, on 12/21/2007, -1/+3LMAO! That was his one and only fight IIRC
- Morphinity, on 12/21/2007, -0/+10Get the ***** out. Apparently, you don't appreciate talented players regardless of whether they get into fights.
- rpgguy1o1, on 12/21/2007, -1/+17it's always good to have a goon or two to protect your better players, but it's good to know he can man-up and toss some punches too
- sardion2000, on 12/21/2007, -0/+9Goons aren't as effective these days what with that idiotic instigator rule....
- SuperMoses, on 12/21/2007, -1/+2Superstars aren't supposed fight. It's fun for the fans to see them fight every once in awhile, but it's a stupid selfish move. In this case it's alright because they were winning 3-0, but Pittsburgh lost Crosby for 5 minutes while Bruins lost Ference... who do you think really lost the fight?
- crowbar77, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1They really should just dump laroque for someone who can actually improve there fourth line. They have roberts to protect him anyway and he's actually an all around skillful player with lots of experience.
- santaliqueur, on 12/21/2007, -8/+7Why not, Gretzky was shielded his entire career. Nice to know Sid's got some balls. Gretzky was always a puss.
- nyr633, on 12/21/2007, -10/+5"The future of Hockey looks alot better than when The Great One was in his third year!"
Um....Crosby isn't posting anywhere near as good stats as Gretzky did.... Crosby is good but he is no Great One... As for that fight? Pathetic... If thats what he is going to do when he goes at it with somene, I'd rather see Laraque bitch his opponents around any day!- mhender, on 12/22/2007, -1/+3[Reply] to this comment.
- RP08, on 12/22/2007, -1/+1Did you watch 80s hockey? The goalies were practically useless sieves. Half the shots you took would result in goals. Every team scored an average of 4 goals a game. Even the mediocore teams scored 3 goals per game at least. The Oilers scored 400 goals in a season. And the season was 80 games, not 82. No one is going to touch the Great One's records cause the goalies are bigger, faster, and more athletic. Not fat, slow, and the "worst skater" like the 80s sieve was. Add to that the bigger, stronger, faster defensemen. No amount of rule changes can fix this. That's why Gretzky retired; because he felt he couldn't keep up with the speed and the bigger and stronger players. He could have played another 5 years. Gordie Howe played for 26 years. If Crosby was born 20 years earlier, he'd be destroying the competition. Same with Ovechkin, Malkin, Toews, and Tavares (he's the next guy coming).
- ethon, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1What about Nash?
- selfdisplaced, on 12/21/2007, -12/+6i am surprised Crysby wasn't crying

I was at this game, everytime the play stopped everyone in the stands were asking "Is Crosby crying again"?
and Crosby Sucks...
http://youtube.com/watch?v=7V6th99Hzyk - Crosshare, on 12/21/2007, -4/+1You're an idiot. Because Hatcher is a talentless thug that makes Crosby a baby? I'm assuming you're the Flyers fan that posted that video? Philly has such class.
- selfdisplaced, on 12/21/2007, -4/+1haha- Crysby is awful, he's a baby.
there's been many of times when Sidney has fallen down from a slight check, he needs to grow a set if he wants to play hockey.
- selfdisplaced, on 12/21/2007, -4/+1haha- Crysby is awful, he's a baby.
- mhender, on 12/22/2007, -1/+2there's a difference between 'sucks' and 'I don't like the guy'
I suggest you learn the two. Also, 'he needs to grow a set if he wants to play hockey' -- no, he plays hockey fine. He gets a ridiculous amount of points and makes millions of dollars. I think he wants to -- and can -- play hockey. The fact that he doesn't get into fights doesn't make him any less of a hockey player, nor does the fact that he hasn't been worked with enough shots to get up immediately after getting knocked. You can hate Crosby all you want, heck I hate how every sports discussion requires sucking his dick in order to be complete. But he's got talent, and you can't deny that. Well, you can, but your argument would be weak.
- aten, on 12/21/2007, -11/+5i dont get it... its a fight ...
- kapsar, on 12/21/2007, -1/+2But he got a gordie howe hat trick. Goal, assist, and a fight. Been a while since that happened, and it's his first major fight. Plus it looked like he kicked the ***** out of the dude.
- fitzfan, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2Think of it as Peyton Manning getting in a fight after passing for a TD and running for one in the same game.

- skyshock1, on 12/21/2007, -14/+12Pardon my ignorance, but um, I don't get it. Fights break out in hockey all the time. Why did this one make the front page?
- jeremymccurdy, on 12/21/2007, -0/+19Because it's Sidney Crosby fighting, for the first time in the NHL as far as I know.
- selfdisplaced, on 12/21/2007, -7/+4because he's too much of a baby to fight
- vwhunter98, on 12/21/2007, -1/+8Actually.... it has to do with the Gordie Howe hat trick.... a goal, an assist, and a fight major in one game. Not a Crosby fan... at all... but still a cool feat
- smashingmonkey, on 01/24/2008, -0/+4It's both reasons actually. The skills forwards like Crosby are not typically fighters. Team captains are typically not fighters. Fights may be semi-common in hockey, but it's usually the same brawlers you see in every fight - a couple of big guys on each team. If Joe Sakic had a fight, it'd be news too.
- aten, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2i didn't get it either
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordie_Howe_hat_trick - shoover, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3A couple reasons why it is significant:
1. getting a goal + assist + fight shows you can play every aspect of hockey (that's what a Gordie Howe hatrick is, as opposed to a regular hatrick, which is 3 goals)
2. Crosby is young and pure skill on ice. Whatever team has him will have a couple players that exist to do nothing else but protect him. For him to drop the gloves shows that despite his status, he isn't afraid to defend himself. - ryptide, on 12/22/2007, -1/+4The biggest reason its news is that we're used to seeing him start something, back up behind his boys and flap his gums instead of manning up. Good on him, but he's still a whiney little baby.
- jeremymccurdy, on 12/21/2007, -0/+19Because it's Sidney Crosby fighting, for the first time in the NHL as far as I know.
- tbenathan, on 12/21/2007, -20/+2This video is why hockey will never be a truly national sport in America.
There are too many penalties, and too few goals. It's too hard to follow for casual fans (the puck is too small and moves so fast) and there are too few prominent Americans for fans to identify with. And the striking doesn't help, either.- winmywii, on 12/21/2007, -1/+9"too many penalties"? What about basketball. You can't do anything. "Too few goals", but when that happen they are more exciting than any other sport (except maybe Europeans getting excite over soccer goals), again do you want this to be basketball and score on every shot?
I can understand why football is popular in America, but Basketball and Baseball are so boring. Plus hockey players are the best conditioned and toughest athletes of the big pro sports.- almostspastic, on 12/21/2007, -4/+2I'd wager that pro soccer players are better conditioned, although definitely not as tough.
- tbenathan, on 12/22/2007, -2/+1I think it's hilarious that you guys dugg me down for explaining the reason why no one watches hockey. And it's true: NHL ratings are exceptionally low. Far more people watch football, baseball, basketball, golf, and NASCAR than do hockey.
In the NHL this year, the best defensive team allows 2.11 goals per game and the worst, 3.34. That's for 60 minutes of play and two intermissions, not to mention all those penalty minutes. Is that an acceptable amount of scoring to keep viewers?
Apparently not - last year, the three games aired on NBC in the Stanley Cup Finals averaged a totally pathetic 1.6 rating.
Hockey isn't a major sport in America - and there ARE reasons why.- Pake, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Maybe they should just count each goal as 7 pts! That'll do it, right?
- winmywii, on 12/21/2007, -1/+9"too many penalties"? What about basketball. You can't do anything. "Too few goals", but when that happen they are more exciting than any other sport (except maybe Europeans getting excite over soccer goals), again do you want this to be basketball and score on every shot?
- semeticstallion, on 12/21/2007, -3/+9Triple-win in Pittsburgh yesterday and a fight to top it off! Go Three Rivers!
- winmywii, on 12/21/2007, -3/+5He is one of the last players you would think would get into a fight. He usually does it when the team needs a pick up. The last game I was at (i forget who they were playing,it went into like 8th round shootout). They were down and the Sid dropped the gloves, it was like he woke up the whole team. It was a completely different game after that.
- selfdisplaced, on 12/21/2007, -2/+1must have been in a shootout, because all that would have needed to happen was for a goal to be scored...must have been some fast paced action after that...HAHA
- edwintait, on 12/22/2007, -0/+5thats funny......because this was sids first fight....sooooooooo......yeah
- desmondregan, on 12/21/2007, -15/+4crosby is a ***** pussy he always cries on the ice after he gets hit ***** that
- winmywii, on 12/21/2007, -1/+3He takes a lot more cheap shots than most of the league.
- ryptide, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1And gets away with it, due to his perpetual Golden Boy status. It's rather annoying when the announcers won't shut up about him, even when it isn't a Penguins game, and the Penguins aren't even playing that night. It's like they are contracted out to say "Crosby" or "Sid The Kid" x number of times with every broadcast.
- winmywii, on 12/21/2007, -1/+3He takes a lot more cheap shots than most of the league.
- ipricku, on 12/21/2007, -16/+5***** crosby... AO is a way better player... at least he dont whine like a LITTLE BITCH...
- santaliqueur, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3He doesn't have time to whine, he's too busy NOT PASSING TO ANYONE.
- ryptide, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Who, pray tell, does he *really* have to pass to? As a Capitals fan, I can tell you it is pretty slim pickins out there some nights.

- kcoppola19, on 12/21/2007, -15/+2Crosby is a bitch and got the ***** beat out of him.
- semeticstallion, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1I don't think you watched the same clip I did, because it was pretty clear the other guy was bleeding.
- winmywii, on 12/21/2007, -10/+5I can see why hockey isn't popular. The people who are actual fans can even support the game. Look how many negative comment there are about Crosby. Face it, he is good. AO is good, I'm not a fan of his, but I don't talk ***** either.

Goal, Assist, Fight- perogi21, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Welcome to the world of hockey
- LaGStAr, on 12/22/2007, -1/+6He was wearing still wearing his visor... come on.
- skeetshot, on 12/22/2007, -4/+1So? When you get into a hockey fight the first objective is to take the other guys helmet off.... don't comment on ***** that you don't know about.
- cyberwarriorx, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3No. It's considered proper etiquette in hockey fights to take your helmet off if you have a visor on it. Same thing with the gloves. It's all about being civil while having a proper fight.

- d722002, on 12/22/2007, -3/+6I wish people would stop trumping Crosby up to be some messiah sent to us from the Hockey Gods. It's a ploy by the NHL and Gary Bettman to make the Penguins (not exactly a major competitor, and a failing team financially) seem like the greatest team on earth. They're doing the same thing for teams like the Senators, the Panthers, Capitals, etc. and ignoring the teams that are actually good (i.e. Rangers, Red Wings, New Jersey, etc). The league is also attempting to diminish the importance of the Original Six, the very thing that is responsible for the NHL's existence.
- childprey, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Because the senators, a team from 1917, aren't good (ignoring the fact they're first in the east and made it to the cup finals)
- d722002, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1They only made it to the finals because the league's welfare system (whoops, salary cap) gave them a chance.
- childprey, on 12/26/2007, -0/+2Because the rangers won so many cups before it.
- DennisPwnsj00, on 12/25/2007, -0/+1Ottawa is an expansion team.
- childprey, on 12/26/2007, -0/+2I know, but it's a restart of an older team in an undeniably hockey-interested town
- d722002, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1They only made it to the finals because the league's welfare system (whoops, salary cap) gave them a chance.
- ryptide, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1In what magical fairyland are the Capitals (other than Ovechkin) getting positive press? I'd like to visit you there. Maybe we can share a hot cocoa and then take a unicorn ride!
- elipabst, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1The penguins have been a solid franchise for a long time (they won their division for most of the 90s along with 2 Stanley cups). The only reason the team is in financial trouble is because of the size/layout of the arena. Even if they sellout a game, they actually still lose money. That will likely change as they just are in the process of breaking ground for a new arena. Even though it's traditionally known as a football town, the Penguins have a fairly large following in Pittsburgh. The reason there is suddenly such a bunch of hype is because they have a lot of new young talent.
- blueblazer17, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2Yeah, why talk about the youngest guy to win the NHL scoring title. He must suck.
- sgglynn, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2His point is the media is hyping the penguins, which they are. Hockey is one of the few team sports left that carries a team attitude and the NHL is breaking by trying to make Crosby a larger than life character.
I'm not saying he sucks, i'm saying that they are making it seem like a one man team, and that hurts the league. Football and basketball have become complete showoff sports and it's sickening. I don't want to see that happen to hockey.
- childprey, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Because the senators, a team from 1917, aren't good (ignoring the fact they're first in the east and made it to the cup finals)

6. profit - capturedpenguin, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3So this makes the front page, but Gaborik scoring 5 goals in regulation since Mario Lemieux in '96 nets nothing? I got that Crosby is Pittsburgh messiah but come on now.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=FDN_S7mO6jo- Couchy, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Thats pretty awesome, you should make a post on it, i'd digg it.
- yoshimaroka, on 12/22/2007, -1/+6Crosby still had the visor
- bosston, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2He's a good player but Marian Gaborik of the Minnesota Wild got 5 goals last night and got a hat trick in 26 minutes against the New York Rangers.
- ian87, on 12/22/2007, -2/+1>"It's a ploy by the NHL and Gary Bettman to make the Penguins (not exactly a major competitor, and a failing team >financially) seem like the greatest team on earth."

- theShiba, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1It's not a fight if you don't lose the visor.
- 6L6GC, on 12/22/2007, -0/+0Dugg down for being inaccurate. Hockey players shake off their gloves, not their helmets.
- ryptide, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2Most fighters don't keep their visors on. He's not talking about helmets. It's actually a penalty to start a fight when you're wearing a visor.
