- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"I hope whoever does this gets arrested."
Why? There is no actual damage done to the PC. Yes, you could mount the hard drive and screw with the contents but that is not what this guy is doing. - akira117, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Dude that's awesome!
I think I'll start doing that! - Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -11/+9"Yes, you could mount the hard drive and screw with the contents but that is not what this guy is doing."
He is tampering with store property that is not his to tamper with. The computers belong to the stores, not to him. If he were going into clothing stores and putting all the sweaters from a rack into a huge pile on the floor, there would be no "damage" either, but he'd likewise be tampering with someone else's property. - BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5What the hell is Knoppix?
- bigboy101011, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Enjoy having made the Open source world advance, even if only a tenth of an inch !
- pianoman55, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3lol... first of all.. i loved the comment "What the hell is Knoppix?"
but also... drahknon... the computers in the store are for the customers to try out.. so technically he could say he is just trying out Knoppix. - Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7"so technically he could say he is just trying out Knoppix"
Really? And you think the store would be okay with that? Let's drop the pretense that this is kosher with these stores. It isn't. If it were, this guy wouldn't have to sneak around, trying not to get caught. He knows as well as you do, that even if you asked a store, they'd likely say no, and they certainly wouldn't like it if you did it without permission. . - sp00nz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1what a douche.
- Kissitfatty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"What the hell is Knoppix?"
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH thats rich
but serioiusly this isnt bad, for one thing the cloths store example, very bad. for one thing people leave clothes in the dressing room all the time, plus its easer to restart a pc than it is to pick up clothes and determine where they belong. i think its great that he is doing this that way when people come into the store and see linux they will realize its not as bad as they thought, lots of people when they hear linux they freak out and dont listen, it wouldve been better if he used unbuntu though, but wait do they have a bootable cd.... but yeah i thnk ill do that at my best buy, that would piss them off real bad!! - Corgana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What if I boot a linux box into windows? is that so wrong?
regardless, i am SO doing this. - rewritable, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0so digg is a ***** forum?
- swazo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2the comments on digg really show how intelligent the community is.
- blhack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3this is really stupid and counter productive. If somebody's first experience with linux is a really bad one.....do you think they're gonna want to switch to it?
no - Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1"shut the ***** up drahknon.. who are you the BestBuy CEO?
I love digg..
Im gonna go to your moms house and boot her computer to Knoppix and call you."
LOL i was gona do the same. hes a duche bag
and he probobly is a best buy CEO
or a Uber chritan or someone who knows nothing outer than ethics.
either way.... duchebag - Zuggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I laughed out loud at this. Sure it's a good way to spread linux, but I can only imagine the sales peoples faces when someone says, "What's this" and they don't know what to do.
- stoops, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2First off, lmfao thats awesome. Secondly, if a store is dumb enough not to disable access to the bios and boot from cdrom option, then I guess they kinda desrve it. Also, atleast the computers wont need any windows updates, anit virus, spyware cleaners while knoppix is running, so he's probably doing them a favour.
- Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Okay, I'll tell you what: if there's nothing "wrong" with doing this (no harm, right?), then you should be able to walk into any store and do it without having to sneak around. Go ahead. In fact, if there's truly nothing wrong with it, do it and tell the employees exactly what you're doing.
Let me know what happens. - Nocturnal, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7This site crashed my IE7 beta 2 preview browser.
- timmarhy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@drahknon
so you're suggesting that by testing out these pc's for compatablity with knoppix he is somehow breaking the law? fyi you have to pose some threat to persons or property to be arrested, and booting knoppix does neither.
at the very WORST the stores could claim he is posting advertising without thier permission, which violates store policy, not the law.
and i suspect thats what it's all about, breaking the stores policies of only shipping MS re loaded.
one mans terrorist, another mans freedom fighter..... - ntrsfrml, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7thats the most retarded thing i have ever seen or heard..I hope he gets arrested for this.
- HenryTarling, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This is a great story its NOT really hurting any one to be honest. OK it is wrong the PC's should be running windows, that what sells them after all. But if the shop had set the PC's up with boot passwords and to boot from the HD only. LIKE THEY SHOULD BE !! then all would have been fine.
- Kissitfatty, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1i figured it out DRAHKNON is BILL GATES in discuise, why else would he be against this... and since most of those pcs have norton on them yeah the guy is doing them a favor.....
- pingviini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think I'll do this with the ubuntu live disk and leave the install disk next to it.
- wnathans, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3cute, funny...yeh sure
but not a very nice thing to do regardless of one's opinion on windows vs opensource
i'm with you drahknon - TechknowPagan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1@drahknon,
STFU you jackbooted jackass, people like you are why the USA has the highest percentage in the world of its population in jail.
If a store is going to put a computer on display, and allow COMPLETE ACCESS TO IT, then I dont see anything wrong with a customer loading whatever they want on it - perhaps he wanted to see how well Knoppix ran on that hardware. And perhaps most stores dont give a ***** - its a selling point! - If a store doesnt want this happening, they need to do is password lock the bios to prevent anyone from using the CD/DVD to load *****. - dwhitbeck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I see it as a harmless kind of practical joke.
- aldreneo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0SMART! Then the dude buyes it and...How come this is so much crappyewr than the one in the store.
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Oh I get it. Knoppix is a linux thing?
That's awesome. I can do exactly what with it when I get it to work? Run Firefox and play Quake? Awesome. - timmarhy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"This is a Linux CD to protest against the forced sale of Microsoft Windows with every computer bought in this store. This CD leaves the computer totally unaffected. Just take the CD out of the drive and reboot to let the computer back in its original state."
and after reading the guys website it is clear i was right. it is a protest. a peaceful protest against a rabid monopoly.
i can't say if it's illegal in france at all, but i can't imagine they would be able to charge him with anything. possibly get a court order to keep him away from the stores maybe? - wnathans, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I don't think drahknon was suggesting the guy get hauled off to the big house or anything. He was just calling jackass behavior for what it was: Jackass Behavior
- saysaknow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"This site crashed my IE7 beta 2 preview browser."
+3 - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I don't really get the point of this at all. This just portrays Linux as a unprofessional terror hacker tool used by cyberpunks.
- trece, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Yes you can start "windowns" in a Linux box, an hour later or less. Ha ha Windows Live Cd... live? Windows ? don't make me laugh. Pcjacking sounds good.
- Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"so you're suggesting that by testing out these pc's for compatablity with knoppix he is somehow breaking the law?"
Actually, yes. If it isn't your computer, you have no right to do with it what the store doesn't want. It's the same for any person's property. That's the tort of conversion, for starters. The stores don't put demo computers out so people can boot up other operating systems. But even if you don't get charges brought against you, it would be entirely reasonable for a store to boot you out.
I'm sort of surprised at some of these responses. The whole point of pulling a stunt like this is BECAUSE you aren't supposed to do it. That's why this guy is sneaking around. It's a prank... and what makes it a prank is that you aren't supposed to do it. - anthrt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1the site has been seriously dugg.
- rtphokie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How would the world be a better place?
- skwashd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wonder how many days/weeks they have knoppix running on them before the sales staff even realise?
I doing this a Ubuntu live CDs and leave some Ubuntu CD packs in front of the machines with "try Linux for FREE" stickers on them is better. Then not only do people get to see Linux they get to take it home. - Corgana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Just a harmless prank guys- calm down.
- Kissitfatty, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2"I don't think drahknon was suggesting the guy get hauled off to the big house or anything. He was just calling jackass behavior for what it was: Jackass Behavior"
How so, he was protesting against a company that makes a terrible os and then charges you to protect you from the hackers that got into the massive holes that they created. Your more of a jackass than he is.... - Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is funy and the ppl at BB or wahtever will get mad bc they dont trust you and they dont know what it is. lol
put like auditor or backtrack...... find some way of xploiting there network
oh well i AM SO DOING THIS. - AzBaja, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Just like taking a car out for a joy ride. No harm if you do not get caought or brake it???
- mpeters13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"If everyone did this, the world would be a better place."
Unless 3d acceleration means ANYTHING to you. - wubrgamer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0quite nice....i must do this....and soon...( i'm going to go buy a 50 pack of cd-r's ....and load slax onto ALL the computers in teh store ! )
MWAHAHA ! ( this should be fun......) ( best buy is the most crowded....lol ) - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1What a retard.
- Vesty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7For those who say its not hurting anyone, its hurting the store. He's putting Knoppix on then leaving. What does that do to that comptuer left? Render is useless to the store until they fix it. Yes the computer works, but its not showing what they are trying to sell. Until they fix it, the store can not use that computer to show to customers to try to sell it. Which means possible lost sales and profits for the store.
- rolosworld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1nice one.. I hope to see some PCJackings on sams LOL
- Fly1m1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I love it! The Best Buy guys would figure out to take out the CD 8 days later! Love it! digg+++
