The Firefox Bus

kalyan.livejournal.com — "While coming from Mysore, we suddenly saw a big Firefox logo pasted on a bus. We stopped the car and and stopped the bus which was about to leave and took these photographs. I wonder if the artist knew where the logo came from"

      Nope- the forefox logo isn't included in the Ubuntu distro for that reason. (Instead there's a blue globe without the fox.)

      This is a well known myth, In studies its been shown consistently that the average american is more aware of world events, and other cultures then most all other nationalities. Ask a person in Iraq if know anything about Mexico, or German if they know anything about columbia.

      Like Most people each national locality are more concerned about people and events that affect them locally, so a person in Japan would be more aware of things occuring in China/Korea then in other parts of the world. Comparativly Americans for the last half century have consistently looked outwards globally and are more travelled and aware of the world around them then any other group of people in the world

  • eihwaz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11It's cool, but i have a strange felling that it could be photoshopped. You know, Vanishing Point is there just for a reason: putting logos and writings on a bus. And the blogger is a photographer, so he knows how to use PS.
    But it could be true too: both worlds behind the Fox are not the right ones (just check your Firefox icon, and see the difference), so it could really be someone in Mysore who didn't exactly know what the logo is, so they did some errors. A Photoshopper would have used the official logos.

    AND he just happens to work for the IT industry (although he doesnt like being called an IT professional)...

      That isnt a 'town' -- just a hut in the middle of a highway (we call such things 'dhabas') where you can get food/beverages. Sure, it looks ghetto, but, atleast you dont have to worry about getting shot or stabbed or your car stolen all the time like some places in the US

    I think they just grab pictures off the internet they like and use them to decorate their busses.

    I can ask them to check on the bus travel agency. If possible even take a pic.

It's extremely similar to the Firefox logo, especially around the wheel, but the rear of the bus just looks like a fox watching the Earth get enveloped in flame, not really like the Firefox logo, where the Firefox itself is wrapped around the earth. Perhaps this artist and Mozilla took their inspiration from the same Indian myth or something (I know of no such myth, just a thought).

The left ladder on the back of the bus looks "bent" and the black rubber trim around the back of the left hand side wheel looks too straight, like a clean line. Plus, there does not seem to be any stains, tears or crinkles, peeling, etc. anywhere on the firefox part. I'd say a damn good job of Photoshop.
    • tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's not photoshopped. Buses in India are pretty bad, most of them are bent, if you've ever been there, you can see hundreds of people hanging out of a city bus, and you can see the bus tilts a lot, messing up the suspension.

      It's great advertisement. Buses in the US and other countries should have a Firefox logo, it doesn't have to be big like these pictures, but somewhere I want to see Firefox ads.

But something about the shadows on the ladders and the mirrored sides of the buses including whats behind the glass is kind of suspicious. Over all though a very cool idea that should be done more often. Advertising free software will make a more competetive market for the monopolies and gt us better software more affordably (god bless open-source).. Just adding to the discussion, no bash intended ;)

      I was with the author during this trip .I've taken the latter three photographs of the bus (our car is the jalopy of a white maruti and I'm with the brown half pants ) and put them up after all the comments on shopping .I can definitely the logo was not digitally added.I can't imagine the amount of skill it would require to do something like that..plus the logo is not even exactly the same as the firefox logo.Refer to the backview of the bus and compare.

      The bus looked relatively new and washed so maybe thats one of the reasons why there is nothing peeling on the centre.If you notice only the corners are peeling ..and nothing else on any part of the bus..not just the logo area.

      Also a point to note is Bangalore is around 140 kms from Mysore so its not too farfetched to have a firefox logo on a bus.
