Applying Unix Philosophy to Personal Productivity
lifehacker.com — While I'm at best a novice student of Unix philosophy and its rules for designing great software, several tenets are worth thinking about when you're designing your productivity system. Many of the rules that apply to writing great code also apply to writing down tasks and projects that you'll actually carry out instead of put off.

The article says clarity is better than cleverness, but how is that command clearer than it is clever? Tell a newbie to do that and throw a su or sudo in front of it and they've hosed their first partition. Unix and all the *nixes are great, but don't go bible thumping about expanding the theory to every aspect of your life when it isn't applicable.- Cenobite, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5If you know 'if' means 'in file' and 'of' means 'out file' then it really couldn't be any clearer or more straightforward.
- Darkhacker, on 01/29/2008, -0/+2Oh yeah, that's so much more clear. Even grandma could understand it. >_>
Oh, and by the way, you did it backwards. Should be "dd if=/dev/zero/ of=/dev/sda1" and that also assumes that your hard disk is on sda1. Mine is using hda1.
For the curious...

- NestorZX, on 01/29/2008, -3/+1The most important thing for being productive is to find a way to stop forgetting stuff. That is you gotta write everything down into some kind of a system. Why did I choose a Web-based tool for a system?
1- my stuff is there anytime, even if I leave my notebook at home
2 - I can look through my stuff from any computor
3 - it reminds me of my dead-lines!
By the way, my tool is Wrike.com What's yours? - funsac22, on 01/29/2008, -1/+4cron runs my life...
- holzp, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1There is actually a far superior book on the unix philosophy out there, I stumbled on it in a bookstore, surprised so few geeks know about it.
"The Unix Philosophy" by Mike Gancarz circa 1995. Great read!

Make: Don't know how to make love. Stop. - Philluminati, on 01/29/2008, -0/+1There is a saying...."Those who do not understand Unix are condemned to reimplement it poorly."
