Beautiful images of new open source movie
peach.blender.org — The project that is creating an open source movie (codename "Peach") with the Blender 3D software has released some beautiful images showing some of the characters of the movie. Really worth a look. Be warned though: it's extremely fluffy :)
- 1635 diggs
- digg it
- DoodleMaster, on 12/24/2007, -3/+49Ever since I saw Elephants Dream In my computer Arts class I've always wish I could do something like this. *sigh* Well they've got a lot of rep to live up too :). Dugg!
- ricree, on 12/24/2007, -0/+6Well, the source files are available for everything, so at least you can go in and see what you can learn from those.
- nfollmer, on 12/24/2007, -3/+74They are also working on a game based on this movie. It's the Apricot Open Source Game, heres a link: http://apricot.blender.org/
- wontstoptalking, on 12/24/2007, -12/+73Wow, an open source movie. The open source movement is incredible!
- itsthebrod, on 12/24/2007, -58/+2Yaaaaaaaawn. Who cares?
- Cenobite, on 12/24/2007, -1/+19You do, apparently. Well, at least enough to make the effort to comment. :)
- itsthebrod, on 12/24/2007, -17/+3I care just enough to express my disinterest. There's a difference.
- Kitsun, on 12/25/2007, -1/+3There you go, you do care. You answered your own question.
- spawnfree, on 12/25/2007, -1/+2venture capitalist?
- Cenobite, on 12/24/2007, -1/+19You do, apparently. Well, at least enough to make the effort to comment. :)
- ricree, on 12/24/2007, -0/+11They've already done one, actually. It was called Elephants Dream and was released in 2006.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephants_dream- crazybrit, on 12/24/2007, -0/+6Yeah, and it didn't have any plot. It was basically a tech demo.
- forteller, on 12/26/2007, -0/+1An awesome demo!
- iChainsaw, on 12/24/2007, -8/+1This open source ***** is out of control. People are taking it out of it's original context.
- Reziarfg, on 12/25/2007, -0/+5What? It'd be great if everything were open source...Open source OS, software, hardware...beer...
http://www.freebeer.org/blog/
Why not? - srg13, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1How is it out of context? You can download all the source files that made the movie, change them, and redistribute them if you wish - thus making it 'Open Source'
- Reziarfg, on 12/25/2007, -0/+5What? It'd be great if everything were open source...Open source OS, software, hardware...beer...
- itsthebrod, on 12/24/2007, -58/+2Yaaaaaaaawn. Who cares?
- laggyz, on 12/24/2007, -20/+11Wow a lot better then the 3d movies out now, and you don't have to pay :)
- fkr3, on 12/24/2007, -4/+8... based on what?
- Vinvin, on 12/24/2007, -1/+10His/her opinion, I suppose.
- fkr3, on 12/24/2007, -3/+9The movie's not finished or out, there's no trailers.... there's nothing to build an opinion from except a blog.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1I'm thinking he meant the quality of the 3D work.
- Vinvin, on 12/24/2007, -1/+5Well, you can see beautiful pictures, and you know it's open, it's free of charge - that's already three very strong points IMHO.
- fkr3, on 12/24/2007, -3/+9The movie's not finished or out, there's no trailers.... there's nothing to build an opinion from except a blog.
- Vinvin, on 12/24/2007, -1/+10His/her opinion, I suppose.
- DavidGX, on 12/24/2007, -5/+56This is the internet, you don't have to pay for any other movies, either.
- kidcodea, on 12/24/2007, -3/+7people who digg you will be traced and raped by wild baboons in jail... or not
- DavidGX, on 12/24/2007, -0/+20This is the internet, so many people here would probably enjoy something like that o_O
- chris9902, on 12/24/2007, -0/+8This is the internet, I've seen worse.
- bratterscain, on 12/24/2007, -2/+4This is the internet, you're being tracked.
- spawnfree, on 12/25/2007, -0/+1hooray, lets just make fun creative stuff and share it, mabey even get some donations too.
screw the movie industries that have gown rich from trying to profit from guessing what we want to see.
- kidcodea, on 12/24/2007, -3/+7people who digg you will be traced and raped by wild baboons in jail... or not
- macatizor, on 12/25/2007, -0/+1He's talking about movies on the big screen, such as Pixar movies.
- fkr3, on 12/24/2007, -4/+8... based on what?
- mrblue182, on 12/24/2007, -11/+6wow, I really hope its good!
- carlonchox911, on 12/24/2007, -15/+3Release the source code! :D
- Audacitor, on 12/24/2007, -2/+2They will, once it's done. If you want the source for the program their using (Blender), luckily for you, it's opnsrc to: blender.org
- lcollado, on 12/24/2007, -3/+66You do not have to pay, you can get all the production files for free once it is done. However you may consider purchasing a DVD from the blender site by way of encouragement.
- jon30041, on 12/24/2007, -1/+46Support the artists!
- spawnfree, on 12/25/2007, -5/+2screw the middle men.
seriously, screw them.
- peaceninja, on 12/24/2007, -1/+36are they open sourcing the movie script? that would be fun to collaboratively contribute to
- Vinvin, on 12/24/2007, -1/+29The script will get released after the movie has been released. So you can't influence the final movie, however, you *can* make your own movie once this one is finished :)
- LocalDocal, on 12/24/2007, -13/+0Well, the 'open source movie' may or may not end up getting open sourced. Hopefully, it will.
- bratterscain, on 12/24/2007, -1/+11Open source script? May be funny. Anyone remember playing Madlibs? It will make no sense and be funny.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1It'd be more like the game where everyone stands in a circle and one person kicks it off with a word and the next person adds the next word and so on. So, expect a lot of "penis".
- Supurcell, on 12/24/2007, -1/+5Too many cooks spoil the broth.
- forteller, on 12/26/2007, -0/+1A Swarm of Angles is doing just that, take a look, it's great: http://aswarmofangels.com/
- tempusrob, on 12/24/2007, -2/+40That's incredible ... I knew Blender was good, but I didn't know it was *that* good. Obviously the artists have a lot to do with it, but Blender must have the tools they need. This is the future, kids!
- noots, on 12/24/2007, -1/+7depends what they are using to render the images. I think vray is available for blender which is much more powerfull (and far quicker) than the default rendering engine.
- spikespeigel42, on 12/24/2007, -0/+17Actually, alot of work has been put into the blender internal renderer, and those are all internal shots!
- noots, on 12/24/2007, -0/+7that's pretty impressive.
- phmfthacim, on 12/24/2007, -0/+5yes, take a look at Lyubomir's fur tests (done in blender this summer):
http://darkblueinteractive.com/
the internal renderer has sss now (although fake sss), and it looks pretty good:
http://www.blender.org/typo3temp/pics/5ad26a1ec9.j ... - iaminnocent, on 12/24/2007, -3/+0If it was done this summer then it is with a much less advanced version of the renderer the use now.
- nfollmer, on 12/24/2007, -1/+2yafray is blender's raytracing renderer. Its pretty impressive. I personally use yafray more than the internal renderer, just because it is faster. You can get the same results from the internal renderer though.
- spikespeigel42, on 12/24/2007, -0/+17Actually, alot of work has been put into the blender internal renderer, and those are all internal shots!
- Vinvin, on 12/24/2007, -0/+22Well, some of the features they needed were missing but they added them themselves when they needed it, so now they're available :)
- Audacitor, on 12/24/2007, -0/+3http://www.blender.org/features-gallery/gallery/im ...
- Magnes, on 12/24/2007, -0/+3Gallery on blender site shows that is's even better.
- noots, on 12/24/2007, -1/+7depends what they are using to render the images. I think vray is available for blender which is much more powerfull (and far quicker) than the default rendering engine.
- Ramble, on 12/24/2007, -29/+7The film looks like it's going to be *****-tastic.
- Duositex, on 12/24/2007, -0/+20Already ordered my DVD. Elephants Dream was interesting and fun to watch, and meeting the artists who made it at SIGGRAPH was even more fun! Dugg for Blender!
- rkiga, on 12/24/2007, -4/+15anyone else think the frontpage thumbnail was of the dragon from neverending story?
- gsadamb, on 12/24/2007, -7/+6His name is Falcor, and not really...
By the way, if you ever want to stab your eyes out, go rent The Neverending Story 3. It's one of the worst movies I've seen in the past few years, and it has.. Jack Black in it. As a high school bully. It's craptacular. - Duositex, on 12/24/2007, -1/+15Excuse me. His name is Falkor and he is a Luckdragon, not a regular dragon.
- Ataxia87, on 12/24/2007, -1/+2I thought it was the dragon from Neverending Story. It's not a bad assumption either - I thought it was going to be a tongue in cheek article on how Open Source always helps to evolve products and never finishes.
Meh
- gsadamb, on 12/24/2007, -7/+6His name is Falcor, and not really...
- gsadamb, on 12/24/2007, -2/+23Huh.. An open source furry movie.
- 01l0, on 12/24/2007, -1/+12no more than "Over the Hedge" "Happy Feet" "Chicken Little" "Madagascar" or any of the thousands of other CG movies with anthropomorphised talking animals.
- gsadamb, on 12/24/2007, -3/+5Yep, there've been plenty of movies with anthropomorphic animals in them. Though the target audience of those movies is toward a slightly younger set than the typical internet/Digg users who are now finding out about this new movie. :)
I honestly have nothing against it, the renders look fantastic, but I can assure you that there will be a lot of excitement over in that fandom because of this. And you know what? Let them enjoy it. :)- 01l0, on 12/24/2007, -11/+2No, I don't believe you. This movie has nothing to do with furries. Stop trying to spoil this glory of the open-source revolution with your faggotry.
- gsadamb, on 12/24/2007, -6/+1Stop trying to spoil the glory of civilization with your existence.
- jesstech, on 12/25/2007, -2/+2'Furry's opinion here: I think they look terrible. I recognize they're very good for amateur animators using free software, but they still look terrifying.
Actually, now that I think about it, that accurately describes a Furry fan movie.
- chaos386, on 12/24/2007, -4/+1How are any of those open source? :P
- gutistg, on 12/25/2007, -0/+1Eventually someone is going to call rule 34 on it. And then humanity will have reached a new low.
- gsadamb, on 12/24/2007, -3/+5Yep, there've been plenty of movies with anthropomorphic animals in them. Though the target audience of those movies is toward a slightly younger set than the typical internet/Digg users who are now finding out about this new movie. :)
- Vinvin, on 12/24/2007, -4/+7How cool is that? :)
- hexydes, on 12/24/2007, -5/+4So I went to your room, and read your diary!
- barbobot, on 12/24/2007, -2/+3Dont worry, i dug you up for weezer
- hexydes, on 12/24/2007, -5/+4So I went to your room, and read your diary!
- 01l0, on 12/24/2007, -1/+12no more than "Over the Hedge" "Happy Feet" "Chicken Little" "Madagascar" or any of the thousands of other CG movies with anthropomorphised talking animals.
- DavidGX, on 12/24/2007, -9/+3Yiff yiff yiff.
- DavidGX, on 12/24/2007, -6/+5Oh get over it people, I wasn't being serious.
- Baelorn, on 12/24/2007, -0/+8The nice thing about this is when you order you get everything they used to make the movie right there in the package(minus the artists). A lot of other open-source projects require searching around for hours to find everything you need just to play with it.
- directedition, on 12/24/2007, -1/+12Blender FTW! One of the greatest examples of the power of open source development!
- rameznabel, on 12/24/2007, -1/+4is this movie under GPL license ???
- skimmas, on 12/24/2007, -2/+4I think so. I least Elephant's Dream is.
- Shananra, on 12/24/2007, -2/+5It is, everything will be downloadable, and if you purchase the DVD to support them, all the digital assets will be included on the disc for you to tinker with.
- DnasTheGreat, on 12/24/2007, -0/+6Not quite. It is (or at least Elephants Dream was) under a Creative Commons license, which is similar to the GPL, but for things like artwork rather than source code.
- LetterRip, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2Actually the CC license used - Creative Commons Attribution - is more like the BSD license than the GPL. You are free to do with the content whatever you want as long as you provide attribution.
- skimmas, on 12/24/2007, -2/+4I think so. I least Elephant's Dream is.
- dungbeetle, on 12/24/2007, -0/+9I use Blender and it is a great tool for not only 3d art but you can actually make video games with it too. Its very easy to learn, and apparently much more useable than the multi-thousand dollar software packages.
- nfollmer, on 12/24/2007, -0/+8I have used Maya for around 3 years now and recently switched to Blender. I haven't touched Maya since. Blender is a lot easier to pick up than any of the major 3d packages (for me anyway) so I would highly suggest using it. People think it isn't as good because it's free, but with recent upgrades, it's almost as powerful as other 3d apps.
- Audacitor, on 12/24/2007, -0/+5I wouldn't call it easy to learn, but once you do, you just can't bring yourself back to Maya.
- electioneering, on 12/24/2007, -2/+20hopefully Peach improves on Elephant's Dream...by having a plot.
- skimmas, on 12/24/2007, -0/+11I really don't get why all the criticism about Elephant's dream not having a plot... I think it's great the way it is.
- mugwumpz, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1Yeah...that's usually the downfall of this kind of thing. It's a technology-fest, but no storytelling leads to an amazing-looking, but soulless product.
- djauto23, on 12/24/2007, -0/+3Perhaps you could help with that?
- fktt, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2yes, it does have a plot, wrote by a damn good humored guy, too! ;)
- Klink258, on 12/24/2007, -2/+10Oh, a computer animated film about talking animals, I never saw that coming...
Open source ftw. - lcmatt, on 12/24/2007, -3/+36I'll wait for the Peach.CAM.XviD.torrent version.
- Aslander, on 12/24/2007, -7/+2or Peach.CAM.Xvid.nzb usenet pwns torrent by a mile...
- fktt, on 12/24/2007, -0/+4You'll have download links to the anim. from the site one its done. that includes HD version, most likely.
- Smeed, on 12/24/2007, -14/+2What a joke.
- phre3k187, on 12/24/2007, -9/+2is this movie going to be about how 3 animals used linux to take over the world?
- zonk3r, on 12/24/2007, -9/+5Beautiful? I think you meant creepy.
- MacParrot, on 12/24/2007, -0/+13Fluffiness...overwhelming! Cute furry animals...taking control. Stomach heaving from wide eyed optimism...
Just kidding. This looks great and proves you don't need millions of dollars to create something beautiful. Good luck to the whole team. - Noctem, on 12/24/2007, -14/+1I love how the only piece of OSS software worth using was actually developed as a closed application and bought for $100,000 and had the source opened up. Has it _really_ seen a whole lot of improvement since opening it up? No. It hasn't.
- spikespeigel42, on 12/24/2007, -0/+18Yes, it has. Look at screenshots of the old blender, every release has added tons of features. Of course, that wouldn't matter to you, because you are a troll
- Ellipsys, on 12/24/2007, -0/+4Not that I know a whole lot about high end 3d rendering software, but what kind of "improvement" are you looking for? I mean, if it was developed as high end to begin with and fulfills the community's needs, what needs to be done to it besides performance tuning? Is there a plugin system that extends functionality? Looking at the results of the application in the hands of those who know how to use it, they don't seem to be limited by archaic technology or anything.
- BlackBoe, on 12/24/2007, -1/+6Said with the straightforward, earnest, trustworthy confidence of the truly ignorant.
- Shananra, on 12/24/2007, -0/+5Blender hasn't seen a whole lot of improvement? What? You, sir, clearly have not used blender recently. Either that or you're a blatant troll. More likely the latter.
- D3koy, on 12/24/2007, -1/+10We can't let 4chan know about this...
- PhonicUK, on 12/24/2007, -4/+2Rule #1...
- itwasstinky, on 12/24/2007, -2/+2only applies to raids
- Skanadian, on 12/24/2007, -2/+1It also applies on Digg because dumb ***** are always talking about it and we don't need Ron Paul/Apple fanboys down there.
- Scheissen, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2LOL nerd^!
- Skanadian, on 12/24/2007, -2/+1It also applies on Digg because dumb ***** are always talking about it and we don't need Ron Paul/Apple fanboys down there.
- itwasstinky, on 12/24/2007, -2/+2only applies to raids
- PhonicUK, on 12/24/2007, -4/+2Rule #1...
- Malarie, on 12/24/2007, -1/+21Wow, I will definitely buy the DVD to encourage them. Although I will wait after Christmas because 34 Euros is a little bit expensive for me at this time. I know its cheap considering all the stuff you can get, but hey its christmas for every one :)
Here is the stuff you get when you buy the DVD:
On the Peach DVD (two disks) you will find:
- The movie in best DVD quality widescreen format (versions in both NTSC and PAL)
- The HD version of the movie (.avi and/or .mov)
- Commentary tracks by the creators
- All .blend files, models, textures, and so on... the material used to create the movie.
- The original script, breakdown, storyboards
- Documentation and video tutorials by the team members about all technical aspects the movie; like how to re-use assets, animate characters, or add new shots.- Aslander, on 12/24/2007, -3/+2I'd buy it if they offered a cheaper version without all the stuff that I have no use for. It's cool that they are offering all that stuff however.
- Typhoon2009, on 12/25/2007, -0/+1That's pretty cool :D the HD version sounds sexy, if it's not too big I could put it on my PS3...
- wosto, on 12/24/2007, -6/+2What! No free download? What the heck!
- VolantKnave, on 12/24/2007, -0/+8I don't know this, but it will most likely be like it was with Elephants Dream. A free download of the movie in a dozen formats, plus all project files made public. Then you can choose to buy the DVD to support them. If you preordered the DVD, you get your name in the credits.
- Shananra, on 12/24/2007, -0/+4The movie isn't finished, it will be freely downloadable once it's done. You can purchase the DVD to support them, however.
- jrwr, on 12/24/2007, -1/+5the DVD is € 34.00 that is (Google) 48.8444$ Not Bad Really, might get it my self
- ethana2, on 12/24/2007, -8/+4By the time this thing is released, Dell will have rolled out Ubuntu across their entire line of machines, a move which they have already begun; intend stated here: direct2dell.com a few posts down.
Perhaps they could throw it in to demo the monitors and video cards? ;) - kwilliam, on 12/24/2007, -4/+4What? No penguin?
- HamSandwich, on 12/24/2007, -1/+2Am I the only one that thinks the little blue rodent resembles Leo Laporte?
- nanostream, on 12/24/2007, -0/+7GET YOUR NUTS TOGETHER
- postalblowfish7, on 12/24/2007, -1/+9gross - i'm sorry, those creatures are a little TOO detailed - looks very disturbing.
- Christbait, on 12/24/2007, -0/+12Nice, this makes the little cubes that I could barely do in Blender look completely pathetic.
- dungbeetle, on 12/24/2007, -0/+8Extrude is your friend.
- cawfee, on 12/24/2007, -1/+3While I can really appreciate all the work that must've gone into this, the character design seems to be a bit lacking. The styles of cartoony concept and graphical detail just don't mix. Especially the one on the far right in the trio picture. We'll see how it looks animated, I guess.
- BlackBoe, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1Don't dig it down too ferociously, fanboys. It's a perfectly valid opinion, not a troll.
- fktt, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1indeed, animations going to define the characters!
- dimmak, on 12/24/2007, -2/+4I really like this concept and have no problem forking over 50 bones for it.
- Kevin108, on 12/24/2007, -0/+3I doubt they will accept bones.
- Kevin108, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2The shadows are a bit off and you can see a line break near the whiskers. I call Ph...wait, nevermind. :-)
- BlueCadenza, on 12/24/2007, -2/+2Even TWO years ago Blender was a highly capable program,
These were made 2005:
http://www.blender.org/typo3temp/pics/ef1b0f6bc6.j ...
http://www.blender.org/uploads/pics/traction_face_ ...
Now its much faster, has so many more tools and getting VERY close to having the power of commercial programs.

Even stuff you'd normally have to use Zbrush for:
http://www.nicodigital.com/allow/jack_nicholson.jp ...
I'm really happy blender has gotten where it is.- UKsHaDoW, on 12/26/2007, -0/+3Blender was a commercial program. Then it got open sourced. Blender isn't VERY close to having the power of commercial programs. It DOES have the power of commercial programs. The only minus is the UI.
- BlackBoe, on 12/28/2007, -0/+0It was a commercial program ages and ages ago, and upon its release I'm reasonably sure it wasn't even 1 quarter as powerful as it is now, like, at a minimum it didn't even have an undo button. :p So while the commercially developed bit of the software has made a very sturdy base for the features, it by no means usurps the countless open-source man-hours that have gone into it since then.
- UKsHaDoW, on 12/26/2007, -0/+3Blender was a commercial program. Then it got open sourced. Blender isn't VERY close to having the power of commercial programs. It DOES have the power of commercial programs. The only minus is the UI.
- mikebaldwin67, on 12/24/2007, -3/+4Yeah a movie that consists of horribly voiced furries running around in a disconnected plot. Ima bit skepticle, this 'open source' model probably isn't applicable to everything.
- alexandermiller, on 12/24/2007, -4/+3these are not beautiful. the characters are badly designed, i'm sorry. the rendering is impressive and all, they just look stupid!
- ungamedplayer, on 12/24/2007, -3/+2Why are you sorry, avoiding the digging down ?
- David513, on 12/24/2007, -2/+3Filmmaking has to revolve around the STORY, not the technical tools. Pixar is great because story comes first and foremost. There is a lot of technical skill that goes into its films, but they'd be worthless without their directors' (and writers') understanding of story. To me, it's going a bit far to say that the images linked here are "beautiful." They're nice, but nothing really special. They look like run-of-the-mill cute animals in a run-of-the-mill animated movie for kids. There is nothing here to indicate that there's anything special about this project -- as a FILM. If you want the world to take your tools and your work seriously, you need to do a great film, not just make good animation and think the open-source roots of the project make it good enough. It's like "open source cooking." It's nice if recipes are free, but they're no good if the food isn't great.
- exomni, on 12/24/2007, -2/+0Finally an animated film I can make reels of hentai for without fear of persecution!
- bluedemon31, on 12/24/2007, -4/+3Dugg! for SUPER CUTENESS! that's right I'm a guy and I said it.
