Dead Easy: Create A Your Own Custom Ubuntu 7.10 Live-CD With Remastersys
howtoforge.com — This guide shows how you can create a Live-CD from yourUbuntu Gutsy Gibbon or Linux Mint 4.0 system with a tool called remastersys. Remastersys is available in the Linux Mint romeo repository. You can customize your Ubuntu/Linux Mint system and then let remastersys create an iso image of it which you can then burn onto a CD/DVD.

- bettermentflux, on 12/04/2007, -1/+25Great tool. Decent how-to. But I suggest that you visit the new home of Remastersys: http://www.remastersys.klikit.org/
New version (2.0), new GUI and new repository. I hope this tool continues to get love and attention.
Congrats to the author, Tony Brijeski (aka Fragadelic). Keep up the good work!- insub2, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1is it just me or is that link broken?
- z0mbie2099, on 12/04/2007, -4/+2Beautiful.
- DirtySnachez, on 12/04/2007, -1/+2Does anybody know if this is possible from a USB flash-drive or external HDD ? I would image some whacky grub issues to battle with since its not on the usual /dev/cdrom mountpoint ? OTOH, slackware had a micro-distro called zipslack I used to be able to run from a omega zip drive.. haven't tried with/researched Ubuntu much though.
- momsshizzle, on 12/04/2007, -18/+1Title should be: Dead Easy: Create A Your Own Custom Useless Linsux Live-CD With Remastersys
- TrainingName, on 12/04/2007, -0/+10Considering the fact that "Linsux" runs pretty much most major servers, such as Diig and Google...
- hyperair, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5Written by a freedom fighter. Titled by a miserable lowlife such as yourself.
- 4DFX, on 12/04/2007, -1/+6Guys, guys, you don't understand momsshizzle's suffering! He would likely love to be a freedom fighter too, but he's just too stupid to use distros as simple as Ubuntu. That's why he's miserable and depressed and wants everyone to feel sorry for him......
Well naah... dig him down!! - BreathofCepheus, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2Poor kid... Must be a Windows user..

Mario, is that you? - hydrodev, on 12/04/2007, -13/+1So i tried out Ubuntu this weekend....
Not impressed.- theaceoffire, on 12/04/2007, -1/+7So i tried out {XP|Vista|Random item twelve|Cheese|Your Mom|breathing} this weekend...
Not impressed.
^_^ See, I can do that too!- hydrodev, on 12/04/2007, -2/+1Yea but i actually DIDN'T make it up. Ubuntu is the weakest version of Linux.
- insub2, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1...and your comment is relevant why?
- hydrodev, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1Because it was about Ubuntu, and it reminded me of the 2 hours ill never get back. So it seemed appropriate to remark how i dislike Ubuntu. Sorry, i didn't realize i couldn't make a non-fan boy like comment. I just happen to prefer Fedora. Thats it.
- theaceoffire, on 12/04/2007, -1/+7So i tried out {XP|Vista|Random item twelve|Cheese|Your Mom|breathing} this weekend...
- Leion07, on 12/04/2007, -1/+2Very cool, I'm going to have to try this...

AHHH'YUK THAT'S ME AHUHHUHUHH - DangerCollie, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5If I'm reading that right you can basically make a ghost of your desktop, minus your personal folders. I'll have to play around with that. What a nice tool if it works. You could create a standard iso for a desktop and restore basically at will or run your desktop off a live CD anywhere.
Nice.- insub2, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1from:http://klikit.pbwiki.com/Remastersys
1. It can make a full system backup including personal data to a live cd or dvd that you can use anywhere and install.
2. It can make a distributable copy you can share with friends. This will not have any of your personal user data in it.

- slonkak, on 12/04/2007, -6/+3Wow. This is quite amazing. I did a writeup (extremely more in-depth than this article) on how to create a custom live-cd based on Fedora 7 that got nowhere near the front page. I guess it's because it didn't have the word "Ubuntu" in the title. Not hating on Ubuntu, just the people who think it's the be all, end all of Linux.
- dacomputerfreak, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4Sorry if your favorite distro isn't as popular as Ubuntu! I doubt that very many people think Ubuntu is the be all, end all of Linux however it's certainly much more popular than Fedora on the desktop, and for many reasons. While Ubuntu isn't perfect, it's the most suitable for my needs and I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels the same way. I've historically been treated extremely well in their forums, while insulted many times by asking very good questions or offering help on some other distro's forums... Sometimes it's the people and support that help make a distro more attractive to an individual rather that the technology. I use many operating systems, I have no hate towards anything suitable for the job at hand.
- insub2, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I have to agree, MAD PROPS to all the peeps on the ubuntu forums!
- slonkak, on 12/05/2007, -0/+0I will agree with you on that. My point (thought I didn't explain it well) is that linux is linux. It's not that a certain flavor of linux is better at any task. All flavors of linux are equally as good for whatever task you have. You just have to have the apps that work. Ubuntu is so popular because of it's Windows-ish install and use. You don't have to think, or even know that you're using Linux, to use Ubuntu. It's because of this that most Linux distros will eventually suffer the same fate as Windows. They will become so bloated and overdesigned that stuff will start breaking. No blue screens in linux? Not yet...
- insub2, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I have to agree, MAD PROPS to all the peeps on the ubuntu forums!
- Zuggy, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1It may not have made it to the front page because it wasn't so simple. I didn't read yours, so I don't know, but this is pretty ***** simple.
- slonkak, on 12/05/2007, -0/+0That's true. Mine wasn't simple, because creating a Live CD isn't simple. Though I'm fairly young, I have the mindset of the 40 year old pointy haired UNIX admin, if it's not hard you're not doing it right. When I write stuff I do it so other people can actually learn what is happening and why. Not click here and magic happens. There is no magic, but I guess that's all anyone cares about is that something works, not how or why. *shrug*
- vofuse, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1Stop whining!

- digitallysick, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1So i could create a 64bit version with all the codecs and compiz installed. Hummm
- Zuggy, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1Linux LAN party coming up, this would be nice pre-distribution stuff.
- tupperbacharach, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1For a long time, Puppy Linux has offered several methods of customizing a liveCD/DVD (that can also be installed): http://www.puppylinux.org/wikka/remaster
A couple of these methods, are very user-friendly. - maybeway36, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1And if you need more advanced geeky options, there's always the Debian installer.
- gonzosv, on 12/06/2007, -0/+0Great Idea!

http://www.paramegsoft.com/forum/ - darthchaosrspw, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1There's even a Fluxbox version of Linux Mint, and it runs great. Although I do wish the Linux Mint guys would put out 64-bit versions for those with 64-bit architectures.
