ET:QW Linux Demo Coming TODAY
phoronix.com — We told you three days ago that the Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Linux demo was coming very soon. Well, we've just received confirmation that the Linux demo client will be available today! A new ET:QW Windows demo update is coming out about noon (CST) and the Linux demo will be out within a few hours after that. We'll have more information then.

- davidlin, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3woohoo! why did I preorder this game though? My DVD has just been sitting there... But I can't wait to see how it runs with ATI's new drivers!

- jy802, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1Nice screenshots! Too bad no benchmarks. I imagine they'll be out with the full Linux client?
- rolosworld, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2if you see this shot:
"http://www.phoronix.net/image.php?id=0x2007&image= ..."
you can see the specs of the PC used (left, on the terminal):
1.6Ghz
3GB Ram
512MB Video Ram
and he gets ~30FPS
how is this comparable with the windows version? anyone?

- Dylson, on 10/16/2007, -13/+1Wonder what crazy gymnastics you will have to go through to install this.
- NoTiG, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5i had to chmod +x my .run file.
command: sudo chmod +x filename
then
./filename- crazylinuxguy, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3why is everyone so convinced that it's harder to install stuff on linux? Is the above really that much harder than a click? It sure as hell is more secure.
- sexybobo, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2l just right clicked on file set it to allow execution and the double clicked. no command line involved
- EnterDaMatrix, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1Depending on your distribution that might not be possible. Valid way to do it though, just might be better to post a way that universally will work.
- EbilPhish, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1Problem is the universal ways require typing which is apparently to advanced for your average digger, I think anyone who is running it will have a GUI and if they are trying to setup ASCII textmode ETQW or using a odd GUI setup without a filemanager they probably know what they need to do anyway.
- canthraxp, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1I would recommend sudo ./filename, since it will want to create a file in /usr/games
- EbilPhish, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1'sudo sh FILENAME'
That way they probably don't even need to set it to be executable, i believe .run files are compressed shell scripts. sudo will only run on Ubuntu by default though, other distros don't ship with it enabled.
- EbilPhish, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1'sudo sh FILENAME'

- NoTiG, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5i had to chmod +x my .run file.
- jorgepblank, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5When UT3's demo came out (UT3 owns by the way and so does Epic) someone was complaining about how Developers should see the benefits of distributing through Bit Torrent, well, it looks like id is making use of such benefits, GO ID! ID AND EPIC FOREVER! DON'T DITCH THE COMPUTER SCENE! DON'T SELL OUT!
- ferrariman60, on 10/16/2007, -9/+2Guys, don't get too excited. Honestly, ET:QW is basically Battlefield 2, but without fun. I was very disappointed, because I was really looking forward to this game. Held off on the preorder in case it wasn't as awesome as the hype was. Sadly, I was right to be concerned. I do approve of the torrent delivery though.
- fac3less, on 10/16/2007, -1/+3This man spreads nothing but lies.
- Megatog615, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3Why don't people just say Wolf:ET is just Battlefield 2 in WWII?
Because it isn't. ET:QW is the sequel to Wolf:ET, which was a game of its own. In fact, Battlefield 2 is Wolf:ET with vehicles. Take that, haters. Give you something to think about. - twelvedogs, on 10/16/2007, -0/+0Eh, it's a matter of taste, i havn't seen a battlefield game that didn't start me yawning on load. Here's an idea, try the demo and if you don't like it don't buy it, it's not like it costs anything. Also: is there even a linux client for any battlefield game?
- appletalk, on 10/17/2007, -2/+1What about mac ?
- Bootes, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1Aspyr is releasing the full version in November. No idea about a demo.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -3/+4People burying people for saying it's BF2, without the fun. Funny how people who haven't even played the game try to hide the truth.
- Bootes, on 10/16/2007, -1/+4I have played the game and it's much better than BF.
- mooninite, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5This is definitely better than BF2. It has a lot more polish to it. Mmm... it's been forever since I've bought a game, but it looks like ET:QW and UT3 are going to be mine soon.
- rebotfc, on 10/16/2007, -1/+1Ive bought and played it, it is indeed like BF2 without the polish or fun.
- EbilPhish, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2This game has very different gameplay, its not like BF2 yes its the same basic idea and class system and that was from the original Fortress Quake mod anyway. They have copied some stuff such as the stat system, and the robotic bipedal walker but the gameplay is still vastly different.
It is a much faster passed game than BF2, no hiding in a corner for 5 min waiting for someone to appear. But it isn't as deep as BF2, no squad commanding and such.
I find both games to be good, BF2 doesn't have a native Linux client though.
- ptFoe, on 10/16/2007, -0/+12Even though I am not that much into gaming, I will buy this to support a company that ports games for Linux users.
- XCannon, on 10/16/2007, -7/+1I've played QW and it really isn't that much fun. Team Fortress 2 and UT3 are much better choices.
- hexydes, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1So are they getting absolutely hammered or something? I can't even get the torrent file to load...
- Kickboy, on 10/16/2007, -1/+3Just finished playing a quick game of this on my Linux desktop. The game is ***** awesome. Defiantly will take some getting use to, since I use to play the last ET that came out a few years ago. This one is much different.
Looks great on my 8800GTS too :D- Zaggynl, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2definitely
- pbros, on 10/16/2007, -13/+2My virus scanner just killed the torrent download I had going. Said my torrent was infected with an unknown virus. Running F-Prot virus scanner. BEWARE!
- crazylinuxguy, on 10/16/2007, -0/+7you're full of *****. why would we be worried anyway, we're running linux?
Do you work for Microsoft or something, you bastard?
- crazylinuxguy, on 10/16/2007, -0/+7you're full of *****. why would we be worried anyway, we're running linux?
- pbros, on 10/16/2007, -14/+1My virus scanner (F-Prot) just killed my torrent download. Said it was infected with an unknown virus. It was about 45% complete. Beware!
- crazylinuxguy, on 10/16/2007, -0/+5you're full of *****. see above comment.
- infwonder, on 10/16/2007, -0/+9Big thanks to id software for supporting Linux games!
- Endpoint, on 10/16/2007, -0/+3Awesome game.. looks great on my ageing X800 GTO too :-D
- ptemple, on 10/16/2007, -0/+0Running Ubuntu Feisty on an amd64, I get:
$ ./ETQW-demo-client-1.1-full.r5.x86.run
bash: ./ETQW-demo-client-1.1-full.r5.x86.run: Text file busy
What am I doing wrong?
Phillip.- twelvedogs, on 10/16/2007, -0/+0prolly just need to go chmod +x ./ETQW-demo-client-1.1-full.r5.x86.run first if you havn't already, just a guess though, mebee even just reboot in case your torrent client still has a hold of it or something
- fluxion, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1you sure its not still downloading?
`lsof | grep ETQW` and check if the file is being accessed (if its not, the command wont produce any output) - ptemple, on 10/16/2007, -0/+0Thanks guys. I had to quit KTorrent for it to work. Well it didn't work, I got error "STUBBED: ftell is 32 bit!". I guess it won't work on 64-bit machines.
Phillip.- crazylinuxguy, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1It seems like i got that message too on a 32 bit system, because i didn't have the proprietary driver installed. Once it was installed it worked fine.
- ptemple, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1Actually ignore the error message. The first time it fails and deletes itself. The second install the same error occurs but the game works anyway. Unfortunately the screen splits across my two monitors making it nearly impossible to play. Once I fix that I think I will be alternating between this game and Counterstrike.
Phillip.
- xamox, on 10/16/2007, -0/+2I'm in need of more stroyent (.........on linux)
- renegadeafk, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1anyone know how to fix my mouse not working when I launch the game??? it worked fine until I changed my resolution.
Check out the new & improved
