Finally A Great OSX Like Dock For Linux (Thanks To Google)
code.google.com — Well looks like the coders at google finally mastered a OSX Like Dock For Linux. Looks real nice. Its called Avant-Window-Navigator
- 2231 diggs
- digg it
- widdershins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14There's a nice screencast of it at work at http://avant-window-navigator.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/web/ (awn-demo.ogg). Looks nice so far, but doesn't seem to have a zoom feature yet. There are a few Docks out there for Linux, but so far they all seem a bit lacking in one way or another. Perhaps this one will be the one that finally cracks it - although my money's on udock.
- jessejoedotcom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+115Definitely not developed by or related to Google. Here's the developer's blog http://njpatel.blogspot.com/
- 4NDr01D, on 10/12/2007, -101/+5why doesnt the Linux user community make Free Hardware ?
everyone could get together an solder some pcbs and make some silicon wafers
does anyone else find the daily linux post about something everyone on another OS could already do a bit lame
where's the real innovation linux? where's the flux capacitor ?- fcukthisgame, on 12/16/2007, -1/+1FAIL. Go die.
- ApeInago, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@4NDr01D
hardware costs money, ideas don't. ideas, formulaes, sets of instructions, can be essentially copied and distributed for free.
one peice of hardware can only be used by one person, and they can not be copied without spending the appropriate cash on the material.
they do DESIGN hardware however, there are many open source DESIGNS out there, but companies can't profet of them, so they are rarely mass-produced. - bias, on 10/12/2007, -65/+18Oh, it's Great OSX Like Dock when it's on Linux, but Microsoft is a thief when their OS looks like OSX. Thanks for reminding us you fanboys are hypocrites.
- fcukthisgame, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1FAIL again.
- DoubleYouSee, on 10/12/2007, -13/+34@bias
MS asks for money for their rip off... - evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+50Google Code is just a hosting area, like sourceforge or berlios.
- coopaq, on 10/12/2007, -33/+27Hot tip: I heard google is going to buy Linux to take on Microsoft.
Everyone better buy Linux stock right now! Stock Ticker = SRCSM - bias, on 10/12/2007, -22/+6@DoubleYouSee
You mean I can go steal stuff from a store and give them away for free, then I'm right? - YoThisBAlec, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4@coopaq
You can't just 'buy' Linux. That would go against everything that the community stood for. If you mean that Google's using the Linux kernel to build their own OS and to buy stock in GOOGLE, then yea sure. That still won't change all the most popular distros out there like Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo, SuSe, Mandriva, etc. Nor will it change the way the Linux community behaves. - EndersGame, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10bias the point is Microsoft tries to cash in on other people's innovations essentially keeping their monopoly in the computer software industry. With Linux you have countless people devoting countless hours of their own time to deliver the same innovations and ideas for free. The two are hardly alike.
- avihappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Is there a .deb anywhere?
- EnderTheThird, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20For those of you wondering what the hell coopaq was smoking:
Stock Ticker = SRCSM = SaRCaSM
I'm not sure many people understood the joke. - theImposs1ble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3ummm, i see the leaves of the cannabis sativa plant.
maybe its just me but THAT was the first thing I noticed.
good job on the apple bar, but really, who cares... im surprised it didnt come sooner, they have it for xp. - bootle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Not having the zoom option is a FEATURE!
- aaron.dunlap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5this isn't an OSX-like dock at all... this is an active window display bar.... and a quite featureless one at that. All this does is show you the active windows on your screen and let you minimize/maximize them.
- linkinpark342, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It did come sooner actually... if your OSX dock can top this remind me to send you a cookie... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiETvEIF-rE
there's also kxdocker IIRC but that's not half as fun =)
- anmol2k4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13AWESOME.
I thought this was kiba which is OK but quite distractive.
But it will be really awesome if they could introduce a feature using which one could drag a rpm or deb file into the dock to install apps this will make apple user feel at home.
Thre are people who are scared of using terminal for those it would really cool if they could just drag and drop a link into dock or a menu in order to install something.- funnylookinhat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Some of us have operating systems that install files when we double click the .deb (ubuntu does at least), rather than have to figure out where to drag it. ; )
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@funnylookinhat
Yeah, too bad they don't offer a deb. They offer RPM and source, and that's it. - strabes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah that would be nice, if there was even a .deb to begin with hehe. Right now it looks like you have to just compile it from source. Ubuntu's getting there. I'm excited for feisty...
- debian_, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7sinembarg0: you can create a .deb from a .rpm by using alien.
sudo apt-get install alien
then google for proper conversion params.

Kudos to the developer. This is great work indeed, but it's not the only OSX-like dock available for Linux. There are many others too:

And last but not the least, there is Kiba Dock (Akamaru), which has been on Digg before (OK OK, the bouncing icons are practically useless, but still it's cool):

Resembling the Mac OSX Dock in KDE
http://www.youtux.org/content/view/357/2/ - getaclue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Thanks a ton for the list. I'd thumbs up you 10 more times if I could. I can't get kiba-dock to work right for me no matter what I read and try to follow and I haven't even heard of other docks out there. I'll have to give these a try when I get the chance.
- rootlinuxusr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1good list there. Akamaru I couldn't get to install for the life of me either....Wanted it to badly.
- psxman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16You forgot one:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f5/Gnustep.png - djmdave, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6why is psxman being dug down? GNUstep is based on NeXTstep / openstep just like OS X.

- redxii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can't find "macmenubar" searching Google..
- shadowman99, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1dugg
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@djmdave: I buried psxman because this article is for an OSX like dock for Linux, and his link points to a screenshot of a window manager that in no way resembles OSX. It has nothing to do with the underlying system (BSD/openstep/NeXTstep), but with the user interface.
- Trenton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great list! I just compiled up ksmoothdock, and it works very nicely! The only problem I had was with the parabalic zooming, although I'm fine with just single icon zoom. Impressive list! =]]
- skyshock21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was just thinking the same thing. I remember seeing SuperKaramba doing this back in 2001.

Even after I did the above^ - Spatulas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The above worked nicely for me :) Thanks!
- diggapleaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+49Lol I don't think google developed it, it's just hosted on Google Code.
- phjr, on 10/12/2007, -20/+1sure
- muchaaa, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Segfaults for me too =/
- groggyboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3uhh, how would i go about this (on Ubuntu):
You will almost definatley need to build libwnck again due to one silly change you need to make in the source:
in libwnck/private.h change
#define DEFAULT_ICON_WIDTH XX - this could be any number, most likely 32
#define DEFAULT_ICON_HEIGHT XX
to
#define DEFAULT_ICON_WIDTH 48
#define DEFAULT_ICON_HEIGHT 48
you need to update & install libwnck with these changes before you install Awn.
Maybe i should just compile from SVN...- patricks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I ran into a problem with libwnck as well.
Compiling this guy first cleaned it right up:
http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/libwnck/2.16/libwnck-2.16.0.tar.gz

- patricks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42Step 1) Buy Mac running bsd variant OS
Step 2) Remove bsd variant OS

- pandasonic, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4awesome!
@ tumbleweed05: i was gonna do that with my macmini too but then i sold it to a friend. i think i'm just gonna get the next macbook pro that comes out and triple boot leopard, vista, and either ubuntu or fedora - QuantumLo0p, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0I wonder why linux never jumped on the Common Desktop Environment, formerly the Visual User Environment from HP???
- ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -29/+8so when windows rips off OSX features its HORRIBLE OMG STEALING IDEAS
when linux rips off OSX features its GREAT, THIS IS AWESOME!
what am i missing here?- pandasonic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19you're missing the part where MS charges you out-the-a$$ for those features and acts like they're innovative.
Apple is probably worst when it comes to proprietary stuff though. How come nobody complains about their DRM and "don't touch my OS and machines"? but when it comes to MS everyone has something to say.
Linux = free and someone who's not getting paid lotsamoney for their work came out with something comparable or better than MS. - MrSketch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Windows rips off OSX features and claims it was their own innovation.
Linux rips off OSX features and admits they got it from OSX.
Big difference. - provost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9i think mac can also be a bit lenient on the *nix and bsd world considering where they got their initial kernel from anyways. :)
and just to echo, it's not like the linux world is claiming it is something new and inventive, they admit it is a mimic. - robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"what am i missing here?"
Giving credit where credit is due.
However, I'll tell you what I'm missing-
Beryl on OS X. - usergentoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Here is a decent OS X rip I did myself.

linux does....
maybe its just me but im not to sure you know quite what you are talking about...

- Magillicutti, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I like the marijuana leaf pattern.
- mendigg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0The author of clause has mentioned and has opened excellent and a vital topic presently. Clause is written interestingly and the main thing actual. The same theme on Russian sites: http://pivo.in.ua http://www.alcogol.kiev.ua
- sane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2lol, did anyone check out the back drop to one of the menus (forth one down) its probably just maple leaves but looks like pot leaves.
EDIT: ^ I see I was to slow- Magillicutti, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It definitely is, I've used the same tile bg on a site for my old University's H.E.M.P. (Help End Marijuana Prohibition) club.
- Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -16/+1Buried as inaccurate. There are plenty of these types of apps.
- jrtcs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Would you care to enlighten us with some links?
- edru, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1how is this possible...
didnt YZ Dock get a court order to shut down do to the patent?? - gfindlay, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1The coders at google may have finally mastered a OSX Like Dock For Linux, but they obviously haven't mastered the art of naming it. Avant-Window-Navigator? What's with that?
- jimmiejaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Shame it relies heavily on gnome. There's others (listed above) that just need the GTK2/QT toolkits.
Nice, if you've got gnome installed though.- fluoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What does "relies heavily on Gnome" even mean? You're okay with it using GTK and its dependencies (which are the heaviest part of Gnome's chain of libraries) but you have a problem with anything else that might be used in Gnome? Give me a break.
Here are the dependencies:
GTK (and thus GLib, Pango, ATK, Cairo)
GConf
libwnck
If you don't like Nautilus or something else in the Gnome desktop, this doesn't force you to use it. These days Gnome is becoming more like a set of applications and the actual stack of additional library dependencies on top of GTK is getting smaller and lighter-weight, so I'm not really sure what your objection is.
- fluoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What does "relies heavily on Gnome" even mean? You're okay with it using GTK and its dependencies (which are the heaviest part of Gnome's chain of libraries) but you have a problem with anything else that might be used in Gnome? Give me a break.
- ear1grey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Great but... according to Tog, it'll still suck: http://www.asktog.com/columns/044top10docksucks.html
- dgh1973, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Didn't see your post when I commented below, but I share his attitude about the dock completely.
- dgh1973, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I know I'll probably get dugg down like a step child for saying this, but the dock is the one part of OS X that I tend to find a bit underwhelming.
The dock it self is too fat when it's sparsely loaded, when filled with a whole bunch of things it gets better but then the target icons get a little too small. There's always zooming but that rearranges everything slightly as you move around... It doesn't adhere to the basic "hot corners" approach Fitts law advocates (granted OS X compensates for this by giving you screen saver or expose controls in hot corners).
I'm a Mac user myself and sure the dock is pretty, but I always felt it to be a bit lacking in the usability department, especially considering how central it is to the interface. I always auto-hide mine and end up "scrubbing" the bottom of the screen to get what I want because I like to maximize my screen real estate.
Maybe Linux will do it right, particularly since the GNOME desktop always seems to be a little bit more UI aware than the OS X desktop... they follow Fitts laws pretty much 100% with all edges/corners being usable right through the panel interface. - mrfx2, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1I am glad Google is doing this very awesome
by the way those other docs are not very stable!- Hostile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's not done by Google. It's just on Google Code, like a SourceForge if you will.
- tehkain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It amazes me that you even installed an alternate OS without the capability to understand that google did not code this. Its only listed on google code. Its developed by http://njpatel.blogspot.com/.
- Volcane, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21) This isnt a google product, learn to read
2) I've used OS X for 2 years now, the dock and finder sux, I never switch apps using the dock its a waste of space, use alt-tab.- digga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Alt-Tab doesn't do anything in OSX.... I think you mean Cmd-Tab.
- VinceNoir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yawn. Seeing that Enlightenment 0.17 devel is coming along nicely and I've been using it on my desktop for a year now, I would say the Engage dock is more Mac OS X like than anything else.
- zeebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You'd be right about that, Engage has already been mentioned as being a MacOS X like dock. However, I remember thinking the same thing about E17 way back in 2002. Its one reason I ultimately went with Gnome. Time based releases are way better than feature based releases because it helps avoid creeping features since they can't delay a projects release.
- Intangir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2finally?
lol ive seen like 6 at least - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you're into a dock like this, you'll love WindowMaker. It was developed in the late 90's and is based on the original NEXTSTEP dock, which later became the OS X dock. It's been around forever, it's super fast and stable, and there are a ton of cool little dock widgets available. And there's no text file configuration; it's all drag and drop.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Window_Maker - EternalNY1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Buried as inaccurate, Google has nothing to do with this other than hosting the project.
- Thorlord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i was hoping for something like this for windows. i have about 200 things on my desktop and need something that just holds all the shortcuts in a foldout window.
but ill still use this on my Ubuntu laptop. - betovarg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Im new to linux... is there any page where i can see how to install it?
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1If you're new to linux, go with OpenSuSE - http://www.opensuseorg
If you don't fancy downloading it, you can get it much quicker by getting one of the many linux shippers to send you a DVD - like http://linuxemporium.co.uk/
Have fun :-) - MeltedUFO, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://en.opensuse.org OpenSuse
http://www.ubuntu.com Ubuntu
Probably the easiest ones to install. If you know how to burn a CD image just burn it and pop it in.
(If you don't do a quick Google search) - stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah the Ubuntu disc is a bootable 'live cd' to let you try out Linux before installing it on your computer. Check it out.
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think he meant help on installing the app. If that's the case, double click on the tarball in whatever file manager you're using, copy the resulting folder to your home folder, and open a command prompt. Drill down to the new folder containing the app and type ".configure" when that's done, type "./make" when that's done, type "./make install"
At least that's how you'd normally do it. I haven't installed it yet due to dependency issues.
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1If you're new to linux, go with OpenSuSE - http://www.opensuseorg
- chess007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Betovarg,
Go here:
https://shipit.ubuntu.com/
Have the free version sent to your house. Insert it into your cd drive, then restart your computer. Its not hard to do. Good luck. :)
Also, if you need help, make a post at http://www.justlinux.com - BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The title and description are inaccurate because:
1. This is not made by google, it's just hosted on Google Code. Anyone could have made this so you can't present it as the work of Google. :-)
2. Avant doesn't really work like OS X's dock anyway, save your time if you expect it to.
3. Avant, whilst I'm sure it's a fine piece of software, is not revolutionary, or even top of the pile for dock/docker/panel applications by a long way, so even if it were by Google, this wouldn't mean everyone was rushing out to install it.
Buried as inaccurate because of 1. - tboutcher, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2OSX has taken alot from linux in there own right, desktop search and the quicksilver effects come to mind. Take a look at safari and tell me its not a firefox clone.
- bullox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2And Firefox is "from linux" how?
- nandasunu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1actually safari is based on the konquerer khtml engine
- ErifNeerg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2first off, safari looks nothing like firefox. second firefox comes from Mosaic.
- stevehill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also, desktop searching was something Apple started to develop back in the early 90's for the failed Copland OS that would have been OS8. They have developed many things on and off in the past, only for Linux or Microsoft to either add similar features or announce them for future products. Apple then goes out and resurrects the old project and implements it into OSX and everybody calls them copycats.
Sometimes, not always.
- davedekker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"great doc like mac" ?????????? the dock might be one of the worst things mac OS has.. they need to fix finder...the doc.... and the green dot on each window... I think my ubuntu machines work just fine as is...
let the fanboy flames begin- darkyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1uh... *flame?*
- tgone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1did Google develop this or do they just host the code?
- funnylookinhat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wrote a tutorial for ubuntu in case you all wanted to compile this code and try it out:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2093300
Enjoy. : )- TheRealToma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool! However.... use checkinstall instead of make install. It is a debian system! ;)
- tupperbacharach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Apple did not invent the dock/interactive-taskbar. Docks and interactive-taskbars were around at least 14 years before Mac OS X was released.
Here is a screenshot of the first one known, appearing in 1985 on Windows 1.01:
http://toastytech.com/guis/bigw101.gif
For some reason, the dock/taskbar was dropped from Windows, and it next appeared in Risc/Acorn in 1987:
http://media.arstechnica.com/images/gui/20-riscos.gif
I believe that some Linux/Unix window managers were using the term "dock" for their interactive-taskbar prior to the release of Mac OS X.- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4dear god, someone here has a ***** clue.
- stevehill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I'm not sure quite how dock like either of those were, possibly more similar to the taskbar of Windows/Linux today. I do however know NeXTSTEP had the dock in 1989, with previews starting in 1986 for the OS. Since this was the forerunner to OSX, you could say the Apple dock goes back just over 20 years now.
- yhorke, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Mac OS X. Lollerblading over ur 3d party prgz nd imit8shns

- uberon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The developer says: "Awn needs a composited environment to run in, therefore you should be running either AIGLX or XGL with a compositor (such as Compiz or Beryl)".
However I didn't manage to get neither of them to work.
so, consider this. - pyrates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can we come out with a better name then Avant-Window-Navigator? Come on, it has to be easy and simple to remember. At least that is one thing Marketing is good for. So let's have an easier name to remember.

- meteorash, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1lame
- aristotle0dude, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Why don't you guys just buy a mac? It has all of the underlying *nix tools you would ever need and a couple "ports" systems for porting linux software to OS X. There is also a great deal of free/open source software on OS X that is native to the platform or one of the many cross-platform projects.
Back when I was a windows user, I too used to use fake docks and skins but nothing beats the real thing.
If you don't work for free, why would you expect to get everything for free? - cubee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2well for ms guys, if you dont already have one, here are some sites

Take it easy on slamming people for copying a good idea.
But if you dont like copying people, Go play in traffic. At least you'll be the only one. For a short while. - jake3988, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its bleeding new, so I doubt it works well. But I'll it out.
Gdesklets, Adesklets, Superkaramba are all great in theory... but in practice they fail utterly, rarely work, and unless you got insane time on your hands don't look very good.
The day I find a good eye-candy program THAT ACTUALLY WORKS, I'll be happy. Maybe that day will be upon us. - jake3988, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I think Engage had promise... but it was integrated only into E17 which won't be released for AGES and in fact they removed it (god only knows why) from the developmental branch so you can't get it anymore even if you to.
- dmitriyvoz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0AWESOME.
I thought this was kiba which is OK but quite distractive.
But it will be really awesome if they could introduce a feature using which one could drag a rpm or deb file into the dock to install apps this will make apple user feel at home.
Thre are people who are scared of using terminal for those it would really cool if they could just drag and drop a link into dock or a menu in order to install something.
