Firefox 3 Proves Colbert Bump is Real
blog.mozilla.com — Stephen Colbert gave Firefox 3 his “Colbert Bump” on the day of Firefox 3’s launch. We looked at downloads of Firefox 3 by users within the U.S. – to see what, if anything, could be detected. At minute 23 of the broadcast, Colbert said, “Firefox 3 just got the Colbert Bump.” Guess what happened next...
- 4053 diggs
- digg it
- microft, on 07/08/2008, -7/+551If Colbert mentions twitter, he might kill it.
- freeed, on 07/08/2008, -18/+5So. right.
- MavRevMatt, on 07/08/2008, -2/+130What's left to kill?
- Anpheus, on 07/08/2008, -3/+47Hopefully.
- xeslana, on 07/08/2008, -1/+23He kind of did mention it a couple shows back. He said something like "You can call him, email him, twitter him, whatever that means".
- davidrools, on 07/08/2008, -10/+278twitter's so emo it kills itself several times a day
- rpgmaker, on 07/08/2008, -5/+63Emos don't actually get to kill themselves... sadly.
- jay019, on 07/09/2008, -14/+7Emo's dont kill themselves. They just spend their time telling everyone they want too. Attention seeking retards.
- ayeroxor, on 07/09/2008, -10/+3Attention-seeking retards, like someone who copies rpgmaker's post nearly 5 hours later?
- Kral, on 07/09/2008, -8/+1He's just an attention-seeking retard who copied rpgmaker's post.
- flxfxp, on 07/09/2008, -1/+4I wish my lawn would be emo so it would cut itself :(
- picpak, on 07/08/2008, -2/+12If Twitter stays online on a Tuesday afternoon, it might kill it.
- docares, on 07/08/2008, -12/+2Good! then more people will use Plurk!
- RobotLeAwesome, on 07/08/2008, -1/+11is that futurespeak for twitter?
- Firehed, on 07/08/2008, -2/+4Jon Stewart half-mentioned it in passing once, but it was so quick nobody would have noticed who wasn't already using it.
- shaffah, on 07/08/2008, -70/+1digg effect rulezz,
- soccerman90, on 07/08/2008, -2/+29experience the dugg down effect for your lame, worthless comment
- mikephimikephi, on 07/08/2008, -71/+2The first comments always get dugg down
- pyro789x, on 07/08/2008, -0/+28If true, it could be because people who post first are in too much of a rush to get their comment near the top of the page that they don't actually spend time creating a comment worth reading.
- Mononuclear, on 07/08/2008, -1/+3Not always. There are many first comments that get over 300 diggs. It gets dugg down though when it is retarded.
- frozenpxl, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3So does the third.
- qbthemc, on 07/09/2008, -3/+1That's what she said.
- megamod, on 07/08/2008, -38/+24Sure it helped out 20 minutes but it didn't have an impact on the overall average of downloads. The curve maintained it's predictable shape.
- dawgma, on 07/08/2008, -15/+10Moron...
- noahgelman, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6I agree, although it looked like it was only about 15 minutes to me. Anyways, an extra 2000 for 20 minutes is only 40,000. thats .5% of the total downloads. It really wasnt that much of a bump.
Also, I was watching Cobert and the counter at the time of the broadcast. After they mentioned it I looked back at the counter which was at 4 million and i laughed because he was too late. - delfin1, on 07/09/2008, -2/+2i downloaded firefox ~20000 times,
guiness record pleaseeeeeee.
- pckbeta, on 07/08/2008, -12/+747You mean national television exposure for a product improves sales and awareness? Somebody should build an industry around this fantastic idea...
- Feanor, on 07/08/2008, -40/+1You mean cable television exposure for a product improves sales and awareness? Somebody should build an industry around this fantastic idea...
Fixed.- thegodfaza, on 07/08/2008, -0/+11It's also on satellite...
- pckbeta, on 07/08/2008, -0/+11Last time I checked, cable is available nationally.
- gh0st3000, on 07/08/2008, -4/+2Fine, they got free advertising for everyone except the old people who pay 10 bucks a month for basic cable or still use bunny ears. People like that generally don't know what an internet browser is, and refer to IE or AOL as "the internet". So I'm not really sure they would have made a huge difference.
- etherreal, on 07/08/2008, -4/+1@ghost3000: I abandoned pay-for-tv services ages ago. They are all lame. The internet rules all.
- Mononuclear, on 07/08/2008, -4/+2Gh0st3000 I haven't had cable television or satellite or anything more than basic television for 20 years. I am in my 20's and I am a web developer so I know quite a bit about internet browsers..
- filmbandit, on 07/08/2008, -0/+12that's novel -- is it a better model than my amway distributorship?
p.s. if you'll add me as a friend i have some amazing products i'd like to share with you
(amway is for friends) - mattcarreiro, on 07/08/2008, -1/+4what this industry would need is moving pictures set to a monotone voice describing the product. maybe i can use my monorail money to invest in a mimeograph machine
- rpgmaker, on 07/08/2008, -0/+19I don't think it will take off.
- Technohamster, on 07/08/2008, -0/+8I think it would annoy people too much to interrupt a television broadcast like that.
- gh0st3000, on 07/08/2008, -0/+10Maybe if we made them pay for it then we wouldn't have to interrupt it?
- JCPahl, on 07/08/2008, -1/+4People are too smart to act on hype.
- wolvin, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1Really, what rock did you just crawl out from under?
- Velok, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Whoooosh.....
- homescrubb, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1improvement or evolution of a certain marketing idea is just as important as its conception...
- Feanor, on 07/08/2008, -40/+1You mean cable television exposure for a product improves sales and awareness? Somebody should build an industry around this fantastic idea...
- Metaleks, on 07/08/2008, -13/+216Colbert should mention Digg. It's time for payback for all the servers digg crashed with the "digg effect" :)
- mtschmie, on 07/08/2008, -0/+122He has and he mocked digger's incredible ability to bitch about everything, but not actually get anything done.
He probably had a point.- HueytheFreeman, on 07/08/2008, -0/+75If I wasn't so comfy right now I might even do something about it!
- noahgelman, on 07/08/2008, -2/+9He's had a Digg joke in one of his Tonight's Word skits.
And we do get things done. We colabertively help people get the360's back. Get soilders who throws dogs shamed. etc - Mononuclear, on 07/08/2008, -2/+9I think it is hilarious when something happens in the world and people on Digg claim it was Digg that did it. "Look at the power of Digg!!" I just sit back and laugh
- VacantThoughts, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6When I read your post I imagined Liquid-Ocelot saying "BEHOLD the power of DIGG"
- bono4u, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1There were some petitions which perhaps got some more signatures through digg, the people within digg are bitching around but perhaps notice that there are some different points of view not that they would try to imagine them but admitting that there are some. I for myself got news that i wouldn't if i only rely on the normal TV channels, but i couldn't say what effect it overall had other then in my RL conversations having some unusual facts at hand. I don't know if that is enough to make a difference and change the world for the better or the worse.
- DeathJux, on 07/09/2008, -4/+4What other site is going to have as much traffic as Digg, that'd be organized enough to overload Digg's ridiculous servers?
You are aware that for the "Digg Effect" to work, there has to be *more traffic* going to Digg than the sites we kill, right?
- mtschmie, on 07/08/2008, -0/+122He has and he mocked digger's incredible ability to bitch about everything, but not actually get anything done.
- alanr19, on 07/08/2008, -54/+2I predict the iPhone 3g will be a success.
therefore I will call its success the "alanr19 bump", and I'll take all the credit for it.
Firefox 3 was going to be a success with or without that tiresome self publicizing bandwagon-jumping *****.- thescimitar, on 07/08/2008, -1/+13Stephen Colbert would probably approve of that characterization.
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 07/08/2008, -2/+11Is somebody taking parody comedy too seriously now?
- bagelmaster, on 07/08/2008, -1/+8You do realize his whole show is a joke right?
- UnleashX, on 07/08/2008, -6/+101this article is full of truthiness!
- timbro1, on 07/08/2008, -14/+5SIMPLY AMAZING!!!
- YancyFryJr, on 07/13/2008, -4/+142Apparently, tonight's word is Open Source.
- SolidSnak, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2That's two words... but dugg up anyways
- YancyFryJr, on 07/13/2008, -1/+1http://www.seomoz.org/img/upload/colbert-bombing.j ...
A more accurate name for the bit would be "The Phrase," as he doesn't limit himself to just one word.
The More You Know!

- SolidSnak, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2That's two words... but dugg up anyways
- smackythefrog, on 07/08/2008, -29/+2so we all hate colbert now?
- 1timeuser, on 07/08/2008, -0/+8hell no.
- smackythefrog, on 07/08/2008, -5/+1ahahah, please set a record on my post for the most buries...
- JacD, on 07/09/2008, -2/+0I've always hated Colbert. His act is tired and annoying.
- CrazedLeper, on 07/08/2008, -26/+3I wonder what would happen if Colbert did his homework on 9/11 and had the grapes to tell the truth on TV (he dissed Bush to his face at the correspondent's dinner)...I mean, after the wave of criticism that he is "crazy", "offensive to America" and "unpatriotic" and lost his job...I wonder what would happen after that.
- trispear, on 07/08/2008, -1/+9Colbert gets bumped? From his nightly spot that is.
What "truth" is it now? That leprechauns collapsed the towers to get their pots of gold from out underneath them? - DavidtheDuke, on 07/08/2008, -1/+1Nothing. It'd get alot of Diggs though.
- Mononuclear, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1link to when he dissed bush to his face? I am not doubting it happened I just want to see it.
- faithlessphil, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-869183917 ...
- Mononuclear, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Thanks for the link.

- pukiman, on 07/08/2008, -16/+3Wow. This hit front page fast (only took three hours from submission).

In Iran. - stretch611, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3Obviously he was just as brainwashed as us. So he must be a wannabe...
- redfan, on 07/08/2008, -4/+3He probably works for Microsoft.
- vinceislegend, on 07/08/2008, -2/+33And then Colbert will bump this story, and the blogosphere will implode?
- agildehaus, on 07/08/2008, -2/+5We can only hope.
- theotheragentm, on 07/08/2008, -5/+131So Colbert is like Digg in human form?
- earnjam, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6He's at least like the top people who always get submissions to the front page.
If he gives it the bump...great success.- Vocifer, on 07/09/2008, -2/+4Colbert = MrBabyman?
- ralphie81, on 07/08/2008, -2/+11Except he has more sources than just the Huffington Post.
- supermanly, on 07/08/2008, -10/+3Colbert = MrBabyMan + Funny
- KMartSheriff, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2Buried for MrBabyMan
- BeyondDGrave, on 07/09/2008, -2/+1Colbert is successful...so I doubt it.

- davidrools, on 07/08/2008, -2/+70i don't doubt the effect of the bump. It was weeks until I could find Americone Dream in stores after it came out. Even the Ben and Jerry's shops were sold out. And I've never eaten more Doritos in my life until these past few months.
- wampastompa, on 07/08/2008, -0/+20that's some tasty ice cream.
- x0rcist, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4That is one tasty burger.
- BelatedHero, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1You mind if I have some of your tasty beverage to wash this down?
- andy7079, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4I stock up on two or three pints when I do find it.
- dagnabbit, on 07/08/2008, -2/+1Of Sweet & Spicy Doritos? Gross.
- OrangeTide, on 07/08/2008, -9/+3so your trying to prove that your a sheep? wtf. I would try and hide that sort of revelation.
- duccodude, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2you're. short for "you are." Ex. You're a dumbass, dumbass.
- gavin422, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Americone Dream was rolled out pretty slowly though. I know my local supermarket didn't carry it until several months after its launch.
- bryantmcvey, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0I still can't find Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos!
- RadiatedAnt, on 07/09/2008, -3/+1let me guess.... you tried marijuana a time or two and you did inhale

We about to get takin' to a dream world of magic.
- filmbandit, on 07/08/2008, -5/+21i'm going to give this one the filmbandit bump.
which won't have any kind of impact
and won't garner a digg front page ride,
but hey, i try . . . - jerrolds, on 07/08/2008, -5/+40Guys come on...Colbert Report is one of the last good things on television nowadays...no more american idol, or CSI spinoffs please
- stretch611, on 07/08/2008, -2/+3Heck I never even wanted to see the initial american idol. (CSI is good though)
- magicalhobo, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3Correction: "was good"
- Karmavs, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Correction: “was never good”
- bengringo, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2I kinda prefer The Daily Show myself but thats only because Jon Stewart has a little more in-depth interviews with his guests. The Colbert Report is still a great show though.
- brightshadow525, on 07/09/2008, -2/+2Oh please... Colbert is 10x funnier than Stewart.
- ComeOutSwingin, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2I like both, but The Daily Show does seem to be more in-depth. The Colbert Report lacks substance most of the time.
- RadiatedAnt, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2I think your on to something here... CSI: Idol!
- stretch611, on 07/08/2008, -2/+3Heck I never even wanted to see the initial american idol. (CSI is good though)
- HumanRecalled, on 07/08/2008, -7/+1granted if this is true and if so it is very cool and funny - i would not be taking it from this hen scratched graph !
- molotov, on 07/08/2008, -9/+2Minute 23 shows a DROP. The spike is almost 20 mins later.
How can you credit the upward spikes without explaining the downward ones? Could very well be explained by randomness. What did it look like 3 hours later? Were there similar ups/downs?- Jeffler, on 07/08/2008, -0/+7He's from 8:30-9:00...Stewart is 8-8:30. So the 23rd minute is 53.
- ncc1701, on 07/08/2008, -0/+0the graph starts at 11pm EDT, but the show doesn't start until 11:30pm. the drop around minute 20 on the graph is unrelated.
- Rudy165, on 07/08/2008, -3/+11Now let's check the "Digg Bump" and see how long it takes for this graph to be on the Report.
- Revovisionary, on 07/08/2008, -1/+9I believe it. After watching that show I figured I needed to stop procrastinating and downloaded Firefox 3. Granted I was going to do it anyway. I just decided to do it sooner.
- cambrown99, on 07/08/2008, -5/+27I got the Colbert bump back in October the night he announced he was putting his name on the ballot for president in South Carolina and held up my bumper sticker design for Colbert/Stewart '08. Massive sales followed. The phenomenon is real.
http://www.cafepress.com/colbert08hq - tehxen3, on 07/08/2008, -11/+3So? Big deal. I bet Miley Cyrus would have a way bigger "bump effect".
- lisaawesome, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5I can't imagine Miley Cyrus' fanbase even knows what FF3 is. Now if she plugged something like a pony farm or a store that sells daisy dukes to 10 years olds then yes she would have a great bump effect.
- sumeetg, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Because 12 year old girls love to download new browsers?
- OrangeTide, on 07/08/2008, -16/+1never seen Colbert's show. He's not very interesting on other shows though. I quickly interviewed 8 people and they didn't even know who he was! (although I suspect if I had a photo of him they might recognize his face)
Just more evidence that diggers are a fringe group.- luke374, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4What?
- flavanoid, on 07/08/2008, -0/+6or you only interviewed the people that live under the same mossy rock as you seem to
- lfroker, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Are you serious? Thats got to be the worst comment i have ever read.
- DeathJux, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3No no, you guys, he's right. 9 people that haven't heard of Colbert far outweigh the million+ users on Digg.
Great investigative journalism, there, OrangeTide! Keep it up! - lalafel, on 07/09/2008, -3/+0In the outlawed "Gospel of of St Thomas" one of the dead sea scrolls; which will never be released to the world Nazi/Nazarene Corporate medo- pharma- military- industrial controlled Establishment (can YOU tell me who first used the term Military-industry complex? no? of course not.google it...he was among the few generals to become president in the United Fakes of America......and also watch "money as debt", easily obtainable 45 min. on the net as a video) You aren't thinking, just spouting what you think is "kewl".but if u watch this your life, in which you're afraid of what lurks under all those rocks...covering most of the crust of the earth....this gospel is outlawed....well im sure u can figure out its veiled statement...81 [77]. Jesus says: "I am the light which is on them all. I am the All, and the All has gone out from me and the All has come back to me. Cleave the wood: I am there; lift the stone and thou shalt find me there!"...hes noty just saying that he's God, but we ALL ARE, and this is EVERYWHERE..under a mossy rock, in a cup of seawater an eyeball or the plastic keys i peck at, and more so the realization of the godhead who understands its the cleaving of the wood; the lifting of the rock--our inter action, will lead you to pay attention;be aware;the ultimate expression of light..the ultrqa-intensely keen human mind...Einstein said if we were able to use all of the total resources of the mind we would have no need for a body...And he was more than a brilliant thinker...google the Philidelphia Experiment for some horrifying science RealityThat is hard to swallow, but happened.one sailor's body was PART OF a 2 foot thick wall!
.perhaps you dont have the patience for thuis crap. good. thats the way the controlling elite want it- U say "bullcrap, thats why i wont look under these rocks!!"...Then, friend, AT BEST you only have half the story. They dont want you to read the Gospel of Mary, in which she says..."i am the lawful wife of Jesus Christ of Nazarene...." there is some evidence to suggest they bore a daughter, made matriarch of the Marovingians.....oh they were a few generation of nobodies WHO 4 HUNDREDS OIF YEARS WERE THE RULERS AND ROYAL BLOODLINE OF ALL eUROPE.{There have been just over 40 Presidents of the United States and 33 of them have been genetically related to two people, England’s King Alfred the Great and Charlemagne, the famous monarch in 9th century France. The most horrific things yet happen... in angola... the blood diamond countris of Africa, and serbia, bosnia, and so many inhumane conflicts that many who may read this are not even aware of because theuy occurred a generation or 2 ago.I for now will judge NO ONE, but keep the instinct of a child, the awareness that we live in an eternal moment with no past or future( change occurs thru paralell-dimensionalism, i have seen it with my own eyes.) and awarenss that the truth that is the untruth.
- thehemi, on 07/08/2008, -6/+1Dugg for mentioning Colbert.

- laserdog, on 07/09/2008, -0/+3Couldn't it have also been some percentage of people who like using Firefox but who were unaware there was a new version coming out?
- recruz, on 07/08/2008, -9/+1sorry ... but what's the Colbert Bump?
- buckybadger, on 07/08/2008, -1/+49Dear Steven,
What are the odds you can give the stock market the Colbert bump? I'm kinda not doing so well right now.
Joe Citizen- fluxion, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1stock market just got the fluxion bump
- Trav3133, on 07/08/2008, -20/+3Colbert sucks.
- laserdog, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6Name a funnier person on television.
- Trav3133, on 07/09/2008, -3/+2van sustren
- JacD, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0Jon Stewart and Jason Jones come to mind. I don't watch a lot of TV, but I stay away from the Colbert Report like the plague. The guy has been playing the same one note forever. Yeah, we get it, Bill O'Reilly's a silly right wing pundit. Jon Stewart's show works because he satirizes the news (it helps that he's naturally funny), Colbert fails because he's still satirizing the same lame guy.
- laserdog, on 07/09/2008, -0/+6Name a funnier person on television.
- ForestRangerBen, on 07/09/2008, -10/+1Sorry but I don't think he's that popular, I agree with Trav3133 he sucks
- laserdog, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1You didn't actually RTFA did you?
Because it has links to a statistical paper talking about the phenomenon is real.
Maybe you should author your own paper refuting it, outlining your findings that one person agrees with your vague sentiment. =)- ForestRangerBen, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I just need Mr. Babyman to post it on digg and its instant truth, don't you know?
- laserdog, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1You didn't actually RTFA did you?
- AndrewWiggin, on 07/09/2008, -6/+1I'm more interested in what those huge drops in firefox downloads a few minutes before the first big spike were? Oh, maybe just outtages.
- kludge666, on 07/09/2008, -7/+1I think he should go on NBC's tonight show when Leno retires.
Who agrees? - lalafel, on 07/09/2008, -5/+0ifroker your comment is far more effective than mine.....but for the few who actually read it all, and hate me because i wont denounce either side- yet-at least mebbe i can get 'em thinking.....but yours'll get 1/2 ANGRY!!!!!!!!!! ANYONE WHO ARE AMONG THE "FEW" if you havnt already viewed this stunning collection of factoid revelations........... http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-181784813 ...
- al1encas1no, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1none of the people that caused that bump are on digg, because a download day story hit the front page twice a week for three months beforehand
- stunkcrunk, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0hmmm. so, what happened at 20:10???
- tama00, on 07/09/2008, -1/+1there equal negative bumps as well. I wonder which tv show caused that.
- StopPandaTime, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Everyone loves Stephen.
- JacD, on 07/09/2008, -8/+3Colbert really shouldn't have his own show. Yeah, I guess I can't argue with ratings, but neither the format (nor the host) is anywhere near as good as the Daily Show. His whole show depends on satirizing O'Reilly. That's fine when you're doing a 5 minute bit on SNL, but it gets really tired as a regular half-hour thing.
Jon Stewart isn't caricaturing someone else. He's just a good comedian for half an hour. His jokes are funny because they expose the absurd in the real world, not because he's rehashing a list of right wing talking points over and over.- metaliq, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Yeah. He shouldn't have his own show because the ratings are good. I mean, you don't like him, so of course they should just cancel it! Despite, of course, how good his ratings are.
Damn. If only you ran the world we'd all be a lot happier. - JacD, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0What can I say? There's a lot of crap on tv.
- Eganj, on 07/09/2008, -1/+2You sir are a moron. Colbert is a comedic genius. Did you not see the white house press dinner?
- JacD, on 07/09/2008, -2/+0Yeah, that took real genius. Standing up and reciting all of bush's ***** as achievements. Like I said, he's got one song in his repertoire, and it's not that good.
- metaliq, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Yeah. He shouldn't have his own show because the ratings are good. I mean, you don't like him, so of course they should just cancel it! Despite, of course, how good his ratings are.
- jshooter1377, on 07/09/2008, -0/+2Maybe he should try to do his Colbert Bump magic on the earth and maybe it will heal itself from all the damage we are constantly doing to it.
- robbob, on 07/09/2008, -2/+1who the hell watches live TV anymore?
- coviecarbine, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I Tivo my Colbert.
