Linux is greener than Windows, test shows
networkworld.com — For this test, the reviewers examined power consumption as a way to judge whether Windows Server 2008 or Linux is, in fact, the 'greener' operating system. The test points to Linux as the winner of the green flag by margins that topped out at 12%.

Doesn't seem like kernel was tuned for this test, as it should be. Tickless is not discussed. Test is complete ***** aimed at getting more views of their adds -- its split across 6 pages. Stop being sensationalistic.- stix213, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3Tickless got its own paragraph on page 2 dumbass. It wasn't used during testing because it isn't part of the default kernels for RHEL & SUSE, but the article states that the feature is planned for future versions of both distro's.
Maybe you should read the article first, instead of trying to just get the first comment without reading.

I havent had a virus in over 8 years, pitty the fool who has and to those that cant run windows without contracting virus i would recommend a more noobish operating system, such a macos/linux. of course that 12% energy save on linux will be spend on the hours upon hours of configuration and searching for programs that work right
- stix213, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3"of course that 12% energy save on linux will be spend on the hours upon hours of configuration and searching for programs that work right"
Obviously you haven't used Linux much if that is your opinion...... its sad really.
noobish operating system? Here is a noobish task and how Linux and Windows differ:
Windows:
You are using Windows and need to find a document you wrote sometime ago on your machine, copy some text from it, and send that as an e-mail to your boss. You will manually open Windows search or Google Desktop and search for the document, wait for it to complete, open the document manually, search the document for the text you need, select it, then finally drop it into your e-mail program and hit send. Approx 1-5 minutes of your time is used. Not too bad, but lets see how it compares....
Linux:
I am using Linux and need to do the same task, I'm a busy person so I just write a few commands that are piped into each other and press enter, then go back to doing something more important while Linux does all the work for me. (Like CS:Source, can't stop playing that zombie mod, and I have a few minutes to kill) A few minutes later (waiting for the next map to load) I verify that my e-mail was sent correctly. Approx 10 seconds of my time is used.
That's the true power of Linux, which translates to nearly every task you ever have to do with a computer..... as long as you know what you are doing, like with anything with life.
- stix213, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3"of course that 12% energy save on linux will be spend on the hours upon hours of configuration and searching for programs that work right"

- randumbusername, on 06/10/2008, -12/+3Great. How about a company packaging an os that busy, no time for tweaking, people will be excited to buy (key word). Until then all your linux doing surgery, linux is "greener", etc. is great but does nothing to give it presence on the desktop.
free does not equal great as evident by people spending 200+ for windows or 100+ for mac and more for programs which run on top. (*but i know they are stupid*)
when free is your main advertising point and you still can't beat hundreds of dollars you have a problem.- SnowCrashv5, on 06/10/2008, -0/+5i can have a linux system up and running with every driver, codec, and app i need in under an hour. Can you do that with Windows without a ghosting app? No? so stfu.
- jay019, on 06/10/2008, -0/+5If all you can see is free "as in price" as the main advertising point, then your missing the point.
- buckrogers1965, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3You can boot a live Linux disk on a computer and not even have to install it.
You can have a machine on the internet browsing the web with Linux before the windows install disk has gotten around to asking you to type in the 30 digit/letter serial number.
- 0xABADC0DA, on 06/10/2008, -1/+14Kill-A-Watt says my home computer uses 127 watts windows XP and 119 watts under ubuntu both idle, but with freq scaling. Plus Linux spins up the drives a lot less often. Was kind of surprised, expected Linux to use more power.

Ah, there we go!
(and wtf is going on with the comment box?) - kilya218, on 06/10/2008, -8/+1It is really noticeable when switching between OS X and Windows on the MacBook aswell. Pretty much an hour longer battery time in OS X.
- jsully, on 06/10/2008, -1/+4You're doing it wrong then.
- kilya218, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1How's so? Or was that just another one of those lame comments with really no value at all?
- jsully, on 06/10/2008, -1/+4You're doing it wrong then.
- iizh, on 06/10/2008, -14/+5The smug cloud generated by Linux users' conceit negates any benefit to the environment from using Linux.
- Baronvontito1, on 06/10/2008, -15/+4Linux is less functional than windows, study shows.
- iRelinquish, on 06/10/2008, -0/+5yeah, not getting virii is somthing i'll just have to live without....
- jay019, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4Boo hoo, my OS doesnt phone home. Guess it is less functional.
- stix213, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1I run Ubuntu desktop Linux with a Windows VM in Virtual Box for a few Windows only apps (much more stable this way, and virtual box integrates seamlessly so all the apps look native to Linux). Can you please name one thing that my setup can't do that a Windows only machine can?
I can name a few dozen mine can do that a Windows only machine can't right off the top of my head. - Aleksej, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1I agree that this post has a bad title.
- Serphyas, on 06/10/2008, -7/+2I doubt Linux users are desperate enough to convert others that they'll tout that information around.
- MrFurious2k, on 06/10/2008, -10/+8Of all the ***** retarded things to compare. Next, "Linux has a bigger ***** than Windows..."
- iRelinquish, on 06/10/2008, -0/+5Studies show it does!
- 4321234, on 06/10/2008, -2/+5Your mom has a bigger ***** than windows.
- shinkou, on 06/10/2008, -2/+8No!!! IT CANNOT BE TRUE!!! Windows HAS TO BE greener than Linux regarding to the fact that it crashes sooooo often and nobody wants to use it. I have a laptop running Vista at home, but I only turn it on when I need to visit those stupid IE-only websites. To those IE-only sites' webmasters... go back to school and learn your HTML properly! Without your stupid sites, I'll be consuming power on Linux only and make Windows even greener!
- buckrogers1965, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1The joke is on the IE only web sites. The next version of IE breaks all their sites by being standards compliant by default. :)
- cluckinchicken, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1I use IEtab firefox addon to render those IE only sites. Pretty handy.
- BiIlyMays, on 06/10/2008, -10/+2I have a feeling that this is PURE propaganda. "Going green" is just a fad. No one can deny it.
- daftman, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3How the ***** is it a fad?
Energy production level is low. Oil price is high. Most places are getting the worse drought. It's not a fad you moron. It's here to stay.
Go and drive your SUV or something ***** retard. - stix213, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2When your data center charges by the kilowatt instead of simply by rack space, then this is actually important.
- daftman, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3How the ***** is it a fad?
- Eaststand, on 06/10/2008, -9/+0So what?? What does that matter?? Global warming is just an excuse to hike prices of essential materials and services and make us feel guilty for using what we pay for, and for the person said noone wants to use windows, thats funny. Only people wantin to be different for differents sake use Linux. Unless your a programmer or running a server there is no discernable reason for you make life more awkward for yourself, its hardly any quicker than xp and more fiddly. WINE?? What a bag of *****.
- zwaldowski, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4Yes, historic, record-breaking temperatures across my state have nothing to do with us pumping carbon into the atmosphere. Global warming is *****, right?
- Eaststand, on 06/10/2008, -3/+0course it is jesus christ, 50 cows in a field cause more toxic gases than the equivilant number of cars, just different gases, but if you were to believe global warming they are just as harmful, if you think about how old the world is and how little time we have had the internal combustion engine you would see how ludicrous the notion we are damaging the planet is. The world changes, weather changes. Remeber being taught about the ice age?? That didnt happen by 'global warming'. There is no evidence for global warming, but a lot against it, namely the soaring price of oil, that kinda started when the notion gathered pace.
- SnowCrashv5, on 06/10/2008, -0/+3on top of sounding like a right wing anti-environment nutbag who needs a tin foil hat.
Second, i like to know how my OS runs.
Thirdly, open source means no backdoors ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSAKEY ) so that means security.
Fourth, I don't like wasting my time with spyware and viruses. I don't even like to occassionally "check" just to make sure. 5, I like having a firewall where I can get into the rules themselves that control it.
6. I like an OS that i can run as a media center, my home web server, an ssh server for me to tunnel my apps through when i'm out and about, a desktop, a laptop, and sshing from a blackberry is pretty sweet too i might add.
7, I have better special effects on my computer than Vista and OS X combined.
8. I get my office productivity done just fine. 90% of my work apps are web apps anyways. I have little problem with Office files, including Office 2007.
9. Gimp works fine for me in place of any other image software.
10. I like understanding OS concepts, not just what "next" button to click. That, and um, i don't feel like being a dime a dozen MCSE.
So in conclusion, fist ***** yourself, corporate shill.- Eaststand, on 06/10/2008, -4/+0nothing corporate about my views, just the truth. Windows can do all of those things just fine. Also Linux users always bang on about security. Honestly how much of a problem was that really?? Have you ever had a virus or any spyware turn up on your computer when using windows?? I have never encountered either, but maybe I just know what I'm doing. Bottom line is, why have a an O/S that isnt compatible with every single program available?? That renders it useless. Nothing corporate about me, its called ease of use, my lifes too busy to spend time fiddling with something that is maybe 1% faster than XP and doesnt work with everything straight away.
And the only piece of open source crap ive come across thats half decent is Audacity. And even thats not even a quarter as good as Soundforge. All software is free anyhow, a little something called bittorrent.- earthforce1, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2Funny, even though we use XP at work, nobody around me uses IE, they prefer the open source "piece of crap" Firefox.
- kdesu, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2Windows "isn't compatible" with Amarok. Thus, by your logic, Windows is useless :)
- Eaststand, on 06/10/2008, -2/+0because its not good enough for them to be bothered, I love it when open source fanboys come up with these inane answers, I could reel off HUNDREDS of non-compatible programs for linux
- SnowCrashv5, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1so you're a thief then? Sorry, I like my software to be legal. But if you give me your address I'd by happy to call the BSA on you.
- kdesu, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Your own words: "Bottom line is, why have a an O/S that isnt compatible with every single program available??". You didn't set any limits on the obscurity of the program.
- Eaststand, on 06/10/2008, -2/+0well if you like software to free in this day and age, you have more money than sense. If I had to buy any software, and heaven forbid a 360 game or a wii game everyday, then I'd be very unhappy, got better things to spend my money on things that actually cost money.
- init100, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1"Have you ever had a virus or any spyware turn up on your computer when using windows?"
No, but that does not mean that there is no problem. I never get viruses in Windows, but almost every computer belonging to noobs that I've come across is infested with a whole bunch of viruses and other malware.
"Bottom line is, why have a an O/S that isnt compatible with every single program available?? That renders it useless."
Far for every single program available runs on Windows, so by your standards, Windows is useless too.
"All software is free anyhow, a little something called bittorrent."
I sincerely hope that you are caught by the BSA one day, and sentenced to pay millions of dollars in damages. - Eaststand, on 06/10/2008, -2/+0I sincerely hope your self-righteous ass gets run over by a large vehicle you pompous little *****, pirating is the future why pay for things that dont need to be paid for?? Dont try and make out as though I'm wrong, your the one spending his hard earned money on basically nothing. How many games do own for your console?? I have nearly every single game for the 360, for not a penny spent on em. Yes I admit, I'm wrong, I have a huge amount of spare cash to spend and every bit of software I desire, jesus christ, I'm so stupid, I'd best start paying £50 for a game............... idiot, honesty aint the best policy all the time, plus where I live, no piracy laws, it'd be rude not to take advantage................
- SnowCrashv5, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1I will be watching your posts and if i get a clue as to who you are, I am reporting you to the BSA, trust me.
- Eaststand, on 06/11/2008, -1/+0haha, you little tell tale, no worries, like I said no piracy laws where I live, Cyprus, if there are, noone cares, theres bootleg dvds for sale in every newsagent and supermarket, so do your worst, nothing will happen.
What do you care anyway, it doesnt hurt you in any way shape or form, or are you just a complete dick??? Enlighten me, I'm curious, altho I know its the latter.
- Eaststand, on 06/10/2008, -4/+0nothing corporate about my views, just the truth. Windows can do all of those things just fine. Also Linux users always bang on about security. - stix213, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1"Unless your a programmer or running a server there is no discernable reason for you make life more awkward for yourself,"
You realize this IS an article about servers right?- Eaststand, on 06/11/2008, -1/+0course I do, it just annoys me when people go on about Linux as if its good, its not compatible with many apps, therefore it is *****, compatibility is key.
- stix213, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Its compatible with nearly every app out there. Unless you need the absolute latest version of Autocad to work (older versions work fine, just not the new one), I don't see what you aren't able to do on Linux.
- Eaststand, on 06/11/2008, -0/+0You have to use WINE tho, a lot of arsing around for no gain at all. It doesnt work with Mixmeister, works very oddly with soundforge, vegas doesnt work at all, cubase doesnt seem to want to work, all essential programs I need to work. Therefore, to me at least, useless.
- Eaststand, on 06/11/2008, -1/+0course I do, it just annoys me when people go on about Linux as if its good, its not compatible with many apps, therefore it is *****, compatibility is key.

- daftman, on 06/10/2008, -2/+15Is it me or most of these comments got whacked by the dumb stick? It seems like a bunch of 12 years old with MTV attention span just swept through these comments.
- buckrogers1965, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2Microsoft astroturfers.
- kd1s, on 06/10/2008, -1/+13Oh no doubt that Linux is greener. It is also less of a pig than Windows in any version since Windows 95. I have an instance of Debian Etch and KDE running in a vmWare partition that's 4GB of disk and 650MB of RAM and it works flawlessly.
- earthforce1, on 06/10/2008, -2/+18They don't mention the most obvious reason why Linux is greener:
You don't have to buy all new hardware when you upgrade to the latest version, because you can't find Vista drivers for your 5 year old scanner, or sound card.- Papajohn56, on 06/10/2008, -12/+2no you just have to write them yourself. buried
- SnowCrashv5, on 06/10/2008, -2/+8all my hardware, printer, scanner, 512mb vid card, web cam, and all my videos play fine. How about me burying you instead *****? Go play solitaire.
- Papajohn56, on 06/10/2008, -9/+2lol no. mac > linux
- dawnraid101, on 06/10/2008, -10/+1Windows, OS X > Linux.
Face it linux is a piece of ***** that 90% of the time wont work out of the box, nobody who has a life wants to spend hours fiddling with ***** just to get something basic running. - SnowCrashv5, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2I said it before and i'll say it again, if you have to spend forever "fiddling around" to figure out how to do simple tasks on any OS, you have absolutely 0% conceptual knowledge on how an OS works and you should go do manual labor or flip burgers.
- SnowCrashv5, on 06/10/2008, -2/+8all my hardware, printer, scanner, 512mb vid card, web cam, and all my videos play fine. How about me burying you instead *****? Go play solitaire.
- Papajohn56, on 06/10/2008, -12/+2no you just have to write them yourself. buried
- madk, on 06/10/2008, -11/+3Oh get out of here with this article.
- 4321234, on 06/10/2008, -5/+14Why can't windows fanboys just let linux users be happy when nice articles about linux hit digg? Linux users wouldn't act like that if people ever said good things about windows.
- cheerybounce, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4Actually, that's untrue. But there usually comes less ppl who bash windows when ppl bash windows (even when balanced with popularity). And the linux-fanboys tend to express fact-based opinions, when windows-fanboys purely go with their count. Smarter people do not drink the Kool-Aid and use microsoft products.
- ToadX, on 06/10/2008, -14/+3Too bad that in many cases it'll take you more than 12% longer to get something done in Linux compared to Windows.
- SnowCrashv5, on 06/10/2008, -3/+10only if you're a ***** idiot
- ToadX, on 06/10/2008, -5/+1Play a DVD.
- kdesu, on 06/10/2008, -1/+4http://img374.imageshack.us/img374/6161/snapshot9p ...
Oh noes! Whatever shall we do? - SnowCrashv5, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2Not only can I "play a dvd" but I have it as my media center, it plays dvds, wmvs, mpgs, avis, bin, cue, everything, along with ogg, mp3, flac, etc.. as well as acting as a pvr for my cable connection. Took me 1 hr to setup that machine. Works just fine on my PC as well.
In fact, I can probably get my dvd software installed faster than you can on windows. - ToadX, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1On a majority of distributions, DVD playing capability doesn't come out of the box, hence it would take you longer to get it to play. Windows comes with DVD playing software.
- ToadX, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1I didn't say that you could not play a DVD. I said that it would generally take more than 12% to make it happen. You do not need to install 3rd party software to play a DVD in Windows.
- kdesu, on 06/10/2008, -1/+4http://img374.imageshack.us/img374/6161/snapshot9p ...
- ToadX, on 06/10/2008, -5/+1Play a DVD.
- MWeather, on 06/10/2008, -1/+7Let me test your theory. I just checked for updates and updated every single piece of software that needed it on my Linux box. It took 45 seconds.
Do the same on Windows in less time.- ToadX, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1and in many cases it will take longer to get something done.
- jay019, on 06/10/2008, -0/+6Yeah, with our antivirus, spyware and phoning home I'm surprised we get anything done. *rollseyes*
- stix213, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Sure, if you never bothered to learn how to use Linux you are correct. Same as if you never learned how to drive a car, getting somewhere in a car takes much longer than riding your bike..... The answer isn't to forget using the car, it is to learn how to use it before you say something stupid..... ohhh too late.
