Official Debian Live CD!
blog.daniel-baumann.ch — Work is under way for Debian to have an official live CD of its own. This would allow people to use a "pure" Debian live CD when trying to rescue a system, demo functionality, or just test hardware to see if Debian will work out of the box. Maybe other liveCD distros will start to use this as a base?

- TuxFan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not released yet. Submit then but it's dugg.
- sirmikester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What part of work is under way means done?
- Joggl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Definitely looking forward tto the release of that CD! Dugg.
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just use knoppix. It's based on debian, and is the only live cd that allows the installation of software on the live session.
- sirmikester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1While knoppix is based on debian, it is not debian. It applies patches to the kernel and uses changed packages. The new liveCD will be for people who want to try the real thing.
- hybam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's always nice to hear news about debian. Dugg.
- EricB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0yawn, not done, yawn
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"just use knoppix. It's based on debian, and is the only live cd that allows the installation of software on the live session."
false about the "is the only live cd that allows the installation of software on the live session." part - dink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@coredump0x01
bull. there is also mepis which, imho, kicks knoppix's ass.
its worth checking out. - jakbrud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i would have to agree though, knoppix is a lot more stable. I see no real reason to use the official livecd.
- lordfoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A truly representative Live CD would be great. I wait with baited breath.
- bubba., on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Yeah, it's called Ubuntu. Let us welcome Debian into the 21st century.
- hadak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"just use knoppix. It's based on debian, and is the only live cd that allows the installation of software on the live session."
HA! I call *****. - falbq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wtf? Call me crazy, but I don't understand what the big deal is about Live CDs. Why would I want to run somebody's unchangeable distro from slow, read-only media, when i can install my own on the hard drive?
- shadowmoses, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yawn who the hell care's aboiut this silly live CD there are so many available about time Debian did it
- HenryTarling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think debian need a live CD to be honest I'm sure they could be spending time on other projects, as it is I can think of about 5 or 6 GOOD live Linux distros. gets my Digg for being relevant debian news.
- vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Talk about being TOO LITTLE TOO LATE. Who cares, perhaps Debian has heard of this thing called "Internet Time", no one wants to wait (and wait and wait and wait and wait) for them to finally getting around to a new release. Give it up already and sink gracefully below the waves of apathy.
- estacado, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Debian reminds me of lesbian.
- JOPS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Debian reminds me of lesbian."
Of course you silly! Like many other distros Lesbian is based on Debian too. :)

"just use knoppix. It's based on debian, and is the only live cd that allows the installation of software on the live session."
Actually -- Linspire live is debian based AND allows software to be installed. I'm not making this for any argument (e.g. I know knoppix is an all around better solution for recovery/etc), just correcting that statement. - sirmikester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The reason a debian live cd is important is that it will allow you to play around with a version of debian that has not been altered AT ALL. That means that you can test how the hardware detection will work when you actually install, and how it will behave after you install. I'm not sure if most of the posters above realize that Knoppix, Ubuntu, Mepis, etc... all modfiy Debian in some way. Also, the debian live cd will provide a minimal environment with which to do rescue operations without having to deal with all the fluff that some of the newer livecd's add.

That's a moot point since Debian testing and unstable are constant rolling releases. I personally admire Debian for releasing when ready, as opposed to forcing a release every 6 months like Ubuntu. - popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Personally I prefer distros with 98% less lethargy. Can anyone name them?
- bash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@popfrogs: ubuntu, fedora, suse, slackware (to a degree), gentoo, etc.
pretty much any disto other than debian. - kamisama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if knoppix was the same as debian, they would call it debian. That said, looking forward to it, dugg.
- towsonu2003, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great
- halofan101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is cool. I love debian.
