Run Windows Apps Seamlessly Inside Linux
lifehacker.com — You can have Windows apps running right on your Linux desktop and sharing the same desktop files. It's relatively painless, it takes only a little bit longer than a Windows XP install, and it works just like virtualizing Windows on a Mac with Parallels Coherence -except it's free. Here's how to do it.

- MikeonTV, on 03/14/2008, -8/+10Say my machine is duel booting Linux and Windows. I'm not prepared for uninstalling/reinstalling windows, nor do I want another copy installed. How can I bring my existing windows to linux?

- aldenhg, on 03/14/2008, -0/+14In theory, yes. In practice, since you're asking this question, I would recommend no. It would involve making an image of your XP partition and then reconfiguring it to work inside the VM and probably setting up a secondary hardware profile. Just follow these directions. It'll be much easier.
- kazamx, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1You speak the truth. I tried it and got it to work, but it was a pain in the ass. It would have been quicker just to reinstall windows and download all the programs I was missing

- djgraphite, on 03/14/2008, -3/+3If you were using a VMware product you'd be able to use VMware Converter (free) to convert your VM to a VMware VM. You would then be able to use it with VMware Player (free, has some limitations that shouldn't prevent a power user from doing what they want). Or you can use VMware Workstation.
- linuxeventually, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Or you could just use VMware [GSX] Server, which VMware has made available free (requires email confirmation for serial key) for like 2 years now. BTW, ESX server is the pay application/environment.
- Daniel591992, on 03/14/2008, -0/+4I'm in a similar position. I have a laptop with XP installed (never came with a disk). What can I do? I do, however, have a restore CD...but I doubt that would work.
- SSUK, on 03/15/2008, -2/+1You know that restore CD has a Windows installer on it... Right?
- Daniel591992, on 03/15/2008, -0/+2Yeah, but will it work when the program asks me for an XP disc?
- mrnoodle, on 03/15/2008, -0/+4No, it probably doesn't. I bought a new notebook with vista. Burned the recovery dvds with vista. Repartitioned hard drive and installed linux. The recovery disks didn't work. Presumably they just contain an image of the original system state. In the end I got a copy of my friends vista disk and copied it. Which is probably illegal, at least according to MS's idea of the law, but I don't care. I bought a vista license with the disk, I should get to have a proper vista disk.
- apochcrypha, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1Just download a copy of Windows XP from the Pirate Bay. It is ethically correct because you paid for XP (e.g., a part of purchase price of your laptop went to Microsoft for a license to use XP)
I'm running a bootlegged XP, even though I bought a Vista license, and Microsoft isn't losing out, they still have my money in the end.
- SSUK, on 03/15/2008, -2/+1You know that restore CD has a Windows installer on it... Right?
- ix420, on 03/15/2008, -2/+0I'm gettin careless!

- MikeonTV, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1I actually asked this question some time ago and got my answer. I am yet to implement and am not really worried. You don't have to be a hazor to us linux you know! http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4221485
- halter73, on 03/15/2008, -0/+3From the VirtualBox Wiki:
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Migrate_Windows - Kamujin, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1Under Vista, you do a complete PC backup and restore the image to a VMWare virtual machines. I've done this a number of times for various reasons. It works flawlessly.
Under XP, VMWare has a tool that you can run which will virtualize your XP installation. I've tried this 2 times. 1st worked flawlessly. 2nd kept failing due to a disk error. Norton Ghost would also fail on that second drive, so I don't blame VMWare.
- Miche1987, on 03/14/2008, -3/+69Do a barrel roll.
- EgoAnt, on 03/14/2008, -1/+11Finally! I also have dual boot machine, and have wanted to have something exactly like this. My problem was that Adobe Flash CS3 wouldn't run in WINE. Looks like it's time to wipe my machine again!
- sarixe, on 03/14/2008, -0/+10STOP! use gparted
- tomz17, on 03/14/2008, -4/+1Maybe I don't understand your comment, but this isn't wine... flash cs3 should run in this just as it would natively in an XP install.
- sarixe, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1what he's saying is that he previously has wine, and flash cs3 didn't work in it. then he installed windows on a second partition (presumably). and finally, he saw this story, and agreed with it, and realizes he has his work cut out for him.

- Kingoftherings, on 03/14/2008, -1/+13Looks really cool, but can it play 3D games?
I know most virtualization software can't, but can VirtualBox use your physical GPU to play something like Unreal Tournament, or even Crysis?- aldenhg, on 03/14/2008, -0/+11No. Virtualization isn't quite to the GPU yet.
- Shootfast, on 03/14/2008, -5/+2Vmware can do up to Direct X 8, but seeing as how it uses the same code from wine, you'd get far better performance on wine.
- djgraphite, on 03/14/2008, -1/+13Incorrect. VMware does not use WINE (you are thinking of Parallels on the Mac). VMware writes its own SVGA adaptor stuff and in fact I think Fusion on the Mac has more support (DirectX 9 no shaders). That's more than WINE has.
I'm pretty sure the next Workstation release will have better
(disclaimer - I work for VMware).- sarixe, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1but wine runs world of warcraft just awesomely! and it has shader support (this is 0.9.57)

- sirhomer, on 03/14/2008, -0/+14AMD is currently working on a technology to allow GPUs to have hardware virtualization. So the VM would be able to access the GPU directly, thus allowing the playing of all supported games.
- kazamx, on 03/15/2008, -0/+3That would be SWEET
- PhailQuail, on 03/15/2008, -5/+0Pity AMD is doing that work
- idslite, on 03/18/2008, -0/+1Why? It gives competition to Intel, and everyone knows competition is a GOOD thing.
- KhaaL, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Only VMware fusion can play GPU intensive 3D game, and its mac exclusive unfortunatly
- Kamujin, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1Incorrect.
Fusion's DirectX support is only slighlty less useless then VMWare Workstations.
Neither support shaders or the full DirectX 9.0c version.
- Kamujin, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1Incorrect.
- RobotBuddha, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3Not sure if that's really relevant until a 3D sequel to 'Charles Barkley Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden' comes out.
- spltimg, on 03/14/2008, -0/+9This has been available for a while now. The one thing to watch out for is if you using any window composition (Compiz) you may get have problems unless a Window's window is open. Other than that... good times to be had by all :D
- thenativeraver, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3I have never been able to get the Midi inputs to work right.
I have to stick to dual booting.- wonderbriefs, on 03/27/2008, -0/+0I was all excited until now. I've got a dual-booter and I'm constantly going back and forth. Windows for audio programs and Linux for everything else. And for those of you who try to say that there's pro audio software for Linux, SHOW ME! I'm not talking about the free crapware, I need a Linux version of Ableton Live and Propellerheads Reason.
- jcm267, on 03/14/2008, -0/+13I think I'm going to try this. Looks pretty damn cool.
- ssn697, on 03/14/2008, -2/+3Let me know how it works, if you do give it a try. I might put this on my Linux box...

- eviltandem, on 03/15/2008, -0/+2I actually use this for work. I'm a consultant and I do lots of software development and database work for different companies. I have a virtualbox install for each client and project. The vm is free and supports Ubuntu, which means I don't have to worry about dealing with it. If someone comes back to me 6 months later and wants to do something with a project I haven't touched, I can open up the vm and have all the projects, files, notes, and database configurations sitting there ready to go. I have a base "install" that I just copy to to the next install, so setting up a new "machine" takes only a few minutes.
For me this has been one of the best things to happen in computers in years. - apochcrypha, on 03/15/2008, -1/+0Doesn't it defeat the purpose of switching to Linux, if you're going back to Windows for one reason or another? I'm happy switching all my Windows programs (including iTunes) to free, open-source alternatives.

- orxor, on 03/14/2008, -3/+10So how exactly are you running windows apps in linux if you've installed windows into a virtual machine and run windows apps on windows? And how is it seamless if you're using a virtual machine?
- kazamx, on 03/15/2008, -1/+7because you never see the windows desktop. Double click an exe and it does everything just like windows but in a Linux environment.
When I do this, the only clue that I have windows active is the start button I place in the bottom corner.

- ironphil, on 03/14/2008, -1/+2If you run ubuntu with the default theme, then add the human theme for windows to your virtual windows installation and the windows applications will almost look like the linux ones. It can be downloaded from here:

You need to hack uxtheme.dll in order to install new windows themes. Use the patcher from here:

Have fun! - Rewdog, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3Is this really any better than running Wine and having an XP virtual machine in VMware? I was tempted to try it, but I don't want to go through the work if its no better than what I already do.
- mmmiiikkkeee, on 03/14/2008, -0/+4I was excited too; but its kind of crappy. the win apps are not really being treated as individual apps so if you click on a linux app it goes over all the win apps!!! also to launch the win apps you have to see the ugly 'start-bar'. I did not really like it(but then again I have not used windows apps for several months...). If they fix it up i might try it again. and yes it the same as just running vmware/virtualbox... thus NO 3d :(
- tehjarvis, on 03/14/2008, -5/+2Little longer than an XP install? So, 2 hours?

- aaabatteries, on 03/14/2008, -0/+4VirtualBox FTW!
I use it in Mac OS X--works great, little prone to crashing when leaving full-screen or going into it, and no directX or openGL support of course,
but other than that, works fine for most things.- RobotBuddha, on 03/15/2008, -0/+3Virtualbox really is a beautiful piece of engineering. I've tried every virtual machine out there, and none of them can play netflix video in a windows guest even close to as well as virtualbox. It worked great, and even did switches to and from the movies fullscreen in seemless. Even the next closest had significant stuttering when trying to play netflix even in fairly low resolution.
- ileftfark, on 03/14/2008, -3/+20Come on, lifehacker... I understand the point, but Solitaire? Windows Update? ***** Calculator???
I get that people want full integration, but this is the worst implementation of it, and with poor examples. Why take my snappy, clean Linux install and bog it down with a VM? I keep a small XP partition for hot-syncing my SmartPhone (aptly titled, eh?), Rosetta Stone lessons, and a few other things. I *do not* want Windows stuff on my Linux partition, and I don't understand why anyone would. Yes, gaming and PhotoShop (which both technically *can* be done on Linux) would be a boon, but VMs are like duct-taping a collapsing house. I think if the community focused more on porting real programs and apps to Linux instead of patching them through, Linux would continue to evolve, but at an even quicker pace.
/solely my personal opinon- tomz17, on 03/14/2008, -2/+4In the meantime (until there are native versions), it would be really nice to run all of the apps that I need to use in windows WITHOUT having to reboot! This is a good thing, that can only help adoption of linux!
- biggyfred, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1I loaded up Ubuntu on a friend's crusty old laptop last week. He loves it, but he has a *single* Windows only program that he must have (school related). VM'ing (a verb now?) it is perfect for him. Dual booting for one program (that isn't CS3) just doesn't make a ton of sense. Easier to load it up in VM and be done with it. He's not a "computer" guy, and while you and I see VM in very specific, nerdy kinda ways, he sees it as just another program.
I totally get your opinion on this one but you gotta remember for the vast majority, OSs and things of that nature don't carry the religious conviction that it does for the very few of "us". - specialK16, on 03/15/2008, -5/+4"but VMs are like duct-taping a collapsing house."
You clearly have no ***** idea what you are talking about. Do some more research about what virtualization is used for and the benefits it brings. - ileftfark, on 03/15/2008, -1/+2I'm with you guys - it does work for right now (for the most part), and you're not a "geek with convictions" this probably doesn't matter much, but I really want to see they day where apps are all Win/Mac/Linux. I'm of the opinion that if we as geeks and they as average users become complacent in sloppy quick fixes, this realization will not come to fruition, or will do so at a slower pace.
Or I could be wrong, and maybe this will lead the masses to a safer, more efficient environment when they know they can bring their apps with them, ultimately changing the landscape of computing at the most basic level.
I hope the latter is true.
- tomz17, on 03/14/2008, -2/+4In the meantime (until there are native versions), it would be really nice to run all of the apps that I need to use in windows WITHOUT having to reboot! This is a good thing, that can only help adoption of linux!
- Smegzor, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1I use VirtualBox every day to do my work. I run Ubuntu x64 underneath and XP, Vista, Win2k server, and other linuxes as guests.
Seamless mode rocks! Also simple stuff, like having a shared clipboard.
I don't need fancy graphics for work. I have a small dual boot XP for the few games I can't play in Wine yet. Punkbuster doesn't run in Wine :( - sarixe, on 03/14/2008, -1/+3it still uses alsa for sound. if you needed hardware compatibility in windows that you couldn't get in linux, this won't do you any good.
- Uchikoma, on 03/14/2008, -0/+3A VM huh? No offense, but the reason why I keep Windows around is primarily for games as well as some of the encoding tools I use that I haven't found alternatives over on the linux side of things. (yes, I know about mencoder). The VM's out there for linux aren't going to cut it. Not yet anyways. (Solitaire does not count as a game....well technically it is...but I mean games like COD4)
For now, I'll stick to my dual boot. - SPThom, on 03/14/2008, -0/+2Generally, I would expect that running the entire Windows OS and applications inside a virtualized environment would be more stable than WINE, although I'm unfamiliar with the stability of VirtualBox. I would rather use WINE for the decreased overhead and for not needing a full copy of Windows, but this might work better for some purposes. Sure beats paying for virtualization!
- srg13, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1"Generally, I would expect that running the entire Windows OS and applications inside a virtualized environment would be more stable than WINE"
Wine's main problem is that it doesn't support all the Windows APIs 100% - but when an application works, I've never had problems with stability.- SPThom, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Oh, I'm not just talking about stability... IE *clearly* renders differently in Wine than natively... Not just the fonts, but the box model.
- srg13, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1"Generally, I would expect that running the entire Windows OS and applications inside a virtualized environment would be more stable than WINE"
- bsmang, on 03/15/2008, -0/+2The "seamless" mode doesn't work that well for me... It works, but it's quirky with some pretty bad visual effects. I assume that's related to the fancy compiz-fusion + options I have running combined with nv hardware w/ multiple monitors, but it's okay with me. The non-seamless mode works fine and it seems only fitting to run "Windows" in a "window" anyway. And that can of course be switched to a full-screen window which hides the fact that it's running on a virtual machine at all. When I want to impress a windows user who has even the slightest interest in Linux, I open Windows XP in full-screen mode on my second monitor and it's just like I have two computers - 1 Linux and 1 Windows that I simply run with the same mouse and keyboard.
- Stonekeeper, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1So any guesses as to what sun will do with this great bit of technology now they have bought it?
- grindmygears, on 03/15/2008, -1/+1Damn it, how did I miss this? My guess is they'll run it into the ground, just like they will with MySQL. Their hardware is great but they need to stay out of the software business. Their software and support just plain sucks. As does Java and their JES garbage.
But then virtualization is the trend and everyone wants to get into the game. Microsoft, Citrix and Sun have now bought they're way in. Any guesses as to what will happen to VMware in the future? - apochcrypha, on 03/15/2008, -0/+0What's ironic is that the version of Virtualbox you get from Add/Remove Programs in Ubuntu's menu doesn't even support Solaris 10! And Sun is supposed to own Virtualbox? Yet it supports Windows better

- clickwir, on 03/15/2008, -1/+1Virtualbox is great. But it's not seamless. I've done this long before this blogspam came around. It's not seamless, it's just removing the main window and letting you move the other sub-windows, around. But dialog boxes and other windows that a program might open, don't always work right and interacting from a native linux program to one of these, kind of sucks. This is not accurate. It is not seamless. However, this IS, blogspam.
- apochcrypha, on 03/15/2008, -0/+0No, Engadget is blogspam. Blogspam is when a blog summarizes another article which it gets its information from. Lifehacker has its own original articles. You do not know what you're talking about.

- SSUK, on 03/15/2008, -0/+4Kinda defeats the purpose of a free OS if you have to pay for a licence of Windows. Which is probably what you were trying to escape from in the first place.
- CoolWind, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1Everybody has windows already or can get a bootleg version. Those of us who own a copy are trying to escape from the oppression of Windows Genuine Disadvantage. Many more of us also want to escape from being associated with Microsoft in any way at all. Let's face it, they are evil, and that's why the EU is being rough on them. God bless Linux and open source software.
- polywaffle, on 03/15/2008, -0/+3yes, damn them for making computing assessable to the masses..
- bjornski, on 03/15/2008, -0/+2You think doing this will get you around WGA? And "escape from being associated with Microsoft in any way at all"? Keep telling yourself that as you install Windows on your machine.

- Scaryclouds, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1I'm sorry but if you are using a VM to run Windows it is not seamless, even when run in coherence or whatever mode. I though this was going to be an article about Wine, that would be seamless.
- vanden9, on 03/15/2008, -1/+1Umm how well does this run Itunes...
- GOVATENT, on 03/15/2008, -3/+1or....you could run windows apps in windows
- 1timeuser, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1Damnit that doesn't make any sense!
- GOVATENT, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1Last time there was an article about using linux apps in windows (andlinux if i am right), i said "of you can run linux apps in linux) and got dug up, so i was going to the same thing. But it did not work. My self, I am a linux user. No windows on my machine, well I use wine to play half life. and thats about it.
- 1timeuser, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1Damnit that doesn't make any sense!
- atomicwedgie, on 03/15/2008, -1/+1I have both VMware and VirtualBox installed and have found VirtualBox faster in almost every case so this tidbit makes the Baby Jesus smile.
- bjornski, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1As opposed to his older form?
- felix21685, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1i read that itunes works on the VM forum and the lifehacker site. My question is, how do i get it to run on ubuntu on my ps3.
can i compile my own version somehow? - kamakazi17, on 03/15/2008, -1/+0why not just run windows?
- iplayyouandme, on 03/15/2008, -2/+1I can run four major OSs on my Mac at the same time; Unix, OS X, Linux, and Windows.
Not emulated!- MacParrot, on 03/15/2008, -0/+2Yes, but can you do that, tap dance, and cat juggle all at the same time? Now THAT would be impressive!
- paker, on 03/15/2008, -2/+1When a program lets me run EA games I'll consider Linux.
- webefools, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1Virtualbox is nice... i run W2k and XP under linux... and it feels slight faster for some reason... the only thing that is the same tho, is the BSOD and crashes and the hangs...
- YodaJones, on 03/17/2008, -0/+1Yeah, yeah. I get it. People, including myself, want some of their windows apps on Linux. Personally I want my Adobe Suites on Linux. You pricks at Adobe should all catch terminal herpes for not making this happen.
- angrykeyboarder, on 03/17/2008, -0/+1Great tip. I've been doing this for a while now. I just wish there were a way to keep the taskbar off the desktop (it can stay in the Vbox window, I don't need it after launching the apps. - It looks weird and takes up too much real estate).
- jacrider, on 03/21/2008, -0/+0While I live mostly in Ubuntu, there is no comparison to Excel for powerful spreadsheets. Before anyone starts to give me a hard time, I use OO.o when I can, but no macros, limited pivot tables make me go back to Windows just for Excel. I have been trying to get Excel to run under Wine, but it is a bit flaky. This worked wonderfully! Easy install. XP installed in about 2 or 3 hours - quite typical. I joined my domain, found the network servers ... fantastic. Now I can get Excel quickly and easily.
- anarko, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0Interesting. I was tempted to try it, but I don't want to go through the work if its no better than what I already do.
