SGI Further Opens Its OpenGL Contributions
sgi.com — The license, which now mirrors the free X11 license used by X.Org, further opens previously released SGI graphics software that has set the industry standard for visualization software and has proven essential to GNU/Linux and a host of applications.

- markdarb, on 09/19/2008, -0/+21It's great when a company is understanding and cooperative in issues like this, instead of plain stubborn.
- Laibcoms, on 09/20/2008, -1/+9Well, there is nothing to say but thank you to SGI and it means also that SGI will get more positive response and WOM from the FLOSS Community around the world.
- U001, on 09/20/2008, -3/+6Thanks SGI!
- AmazingSteve, on 09/20/2008, -0/+15Man, remember when SGI was the last word in graphics? I remember getting an Octane at work for running Maya and having 2 Onyx 2's to render to and thinking... "man, it doesn't get any better than this." We turned one of the Onyx chassis into a beer fridge last spring. Sad. We paid a small fortune for all that gear too and that was barely 6 or 7 years ago. My current work rig is a PC and it PLUS the software license still doesn't approach what the Octane alone cost back in the day.
- zonk3r, on 09/20/2008, -0/+7Yup, makes you feel old doesn't it?
- AmazingSteve, on 09/20/2008, -0/+8Yeah, but at least I don't need my well worn copy of Unix for Dummies anymore. Still, I miss the purple box of doom.

- Nurven, on 09/20/2008, -2/+8FOSS FTW!
- mangee, on 09/20/2008, -2/+6Thanks FSF and SGI!
- Whitefort, on 09/20/2008, -1/+5Yes! Thank you to SGI - they are definitely among the Good Guys!
- RobotBuddha, on 09/20/2008, -8/+1Blah blah blah Mr. SGI!
- Nintendesert, on 09/20/2008, -1/+3After reading the article on Digg banning the script monkeys and then reading the first 10 replies on this article, I just gotta wonder...
- chicaneuk, on 09/20/2008, -0/+12Now if we could only get games devs switching back to OpenGL in their droves and ditching DirectX, the last sticking point for many people who can't quite get away from Windows to alternative platforms would be one step closer to dissolving..
- Iwantawii, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1In my humble not-a-very-good programmer opinion, I think OpenGL lags in terms of SDK options. They really need to come out with an elegant, managed .NET package. Managed DirectxX/XNA is light years ahead of OpenGL in this, it's retardedly straightforward to get your 3D vision up and running as soon as you start learning XNA. OpenGL requires at least 2 boxes of kleenexes to get an elegant, object oriented "world" for you to begin focusing on content.
- init100, on 09/20/2008, -0/+4Why not use a ready-to-use 3D engine like Ogre3D, Irrlicht or CrystalSpace? They are all cross-platform, open source, and abstract away Direct3D and OpenGL so that you don't have to use them directly. The former two also have .NET bindings if that's what you want to use.

- Sidzilla, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2Way to go SGI! I have fond memories of the SGI workstations our engineering department used for years. They were the cat's ass! I may have to look in to an SGI workstation again, just for the experience.
- mdoverkill, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1The only workstations that SGI sells are the Virtu VS series which are just rebadged BOXX systems that cost more.
- reepax, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2are the first 10 comments bots or what?
- ufia, on 09/20/2008, -1/+5Congrats SGI !!!!
[Digg Bot 2.0 Unregistered Version] - jonr1, on 09/20/2008, -0/+4Too little, too late... or so it would seem
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/opengl-directx ...- Rosco, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1Let's hope this new open license improves that.
- thedaylights, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2A response to Firefox's new EULA?
- narlzac85, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2This doesn't change the fact that the OpenGL specification is not open to community discussion and is full of old garbage that is unnecessary nowadays. Progress is slow moving or non-existant in the OpenGL world. I don't see whats so special about this code release since the specs are already open and the code to implement it is already built in to every single platform in some way (graphics drivers).
- init100, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2Someone should fork the OpenGL specification to make it more appropriate for gaming, and not let the CAD companies hold back progress for their narrow purposes. Of course, someone would also need to persuade the hardware manufacturers (nVidia, ATI, Intel) to support the forked interface in their graphics drivers.
