Ubuntu makes playing Proprietary Formats easier and legal
practical-tech.com — One of the perpetual pains of desktop Linux is dealing with DVDs and proprietary video and audio formats. Ubuntu, like the other Linuxes, have the same problem. Now, however, Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, has made it easier for Ubuntu users to legally play DVDs and files encased in proprietary formats.

- r3negadeX, on 09/19/2008, -5/+5Oh my god, like ANY linux user in their right mind would pay to use a propreitary format. Microsoft and Apple can suck my ballsack, the day I pay to play their stupid ***** is the day hell freezes over. Way to completely ***** on the spirit of Linux and open-source, Canonical.
apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras, bitches! - wallclimber, on 09/19/2008, -2/+1@r3negadeX,
What you're saying, essentially, is that expressing your opinion in a calm, articulate, well-reasoned manner - without resorting to name calling and insults - is not a skill that you possess.- r3negadeX, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1Nope, it sure ***** isn't, *****! :D
- roebeet, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2Considering the OS is free, I don't see a problem with this.
Except.... that Medibuntu already gives you the same thing, at no cost. I'm not really sure where the value is, except maybe for support. The article mentions peace of mind as well, but that's not going to make me cough up 40 bucks.- Spr0k3t, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1You could donate the $40 to a worthy cause... like TPB.
- weizbox, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1I say if you own an Xbox360, PS3, Standalone DVD player, or any other hardware device that can play DVDs legally, you shouldn't have to pay a fee to watch playback if you choose to watch it in a different environment and on a different screen. Why pay the same people multiple times for essentially the exact same rights/service?
It's nice that Ubuntu does this to make themselves look good from a commercial aspect... but I know it also can turn a lot of users off. Built-in Ubuntu Store now shipping with Ubuntu... gross.
