- dafragsta, on 06/03/2008, -3/+15This is old and it sounds like *****.
- camg188, on 06/04/2008, -1/+0Right. This old story pops up every 8 months or so when some geek who never heard it before does a mass email forwarding. Funny story, but if you believe it, you are a fool.
- jay019, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1Just cause you dont believe it doesnt mean it didnt happen. *shakes head in disbelief*
It's not like there are no redneck fools in the USA. lolz.

- KUKBAHLAM, on 06/03/2008, -2/+13Please don't judge Texas by what happens in Dallas. We would give it to Oklahoma if we could.
- HentaiJeff, on 06/11/2008, -0/+1Don't judge Dallas by the farther suburbs, they're changing as more ppl with a brain get out there.
- Brainmodder, on 06/03/2008, -3/+10Hey the microchip was invented in Texas mind you. Although technologically isolated regions of the state still exist in this day and age, which is why the city of Austin is now covered in a giant dome.
- tupperbacharach, on 06/03/2008, -2/+7Texas is diverse culturally and politically, and often the state is hyper-liberal.
How many female governors have there been in California or New York? How many major cities have had female mayors? How many municipalities have had a female police chief? While I lived in Houston, there was a female in each of these positions -- all at the same time!- Ducttape21, on 06/04/2008, -4/+2how many were black?
- InferiorWang, on 06/04/2008, -2/+3how many were latino?
:-p - tupperbacharach, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1How many Blacks and Latinos have been elected to those postions in California or New York?
Lee Brown was the first black police chief of Houston, who later became Houston's first black mayor.
As far as I know, there has never been a Black governor of Texas.
I don't know about Latinos in any of those positions.
- InferiorWang, on 06/04/2008, -2/+3how many were latino?
- Theli, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1Perhaps they were female rednecks. :-)
- Ducttape21, on 06/04/2008, -4/+2how many were black?
- mfpratte, on 06/04/2008, -1/+7I hate when people associate Texas with inbred retards who take the bible as a literal law book. I have lived in Austin my whole life and have never once met someone like this.
- KUKBAHLAM, on 06/04/2008, -1/+4Cmon, you've never been to Waco? Its only a few min north. But if you say you don't ever use 35 I will understand and withdraw my comment.
- nmnnotmyname, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1Unfortunatally for you, Most loud people are also idiots, and they tend to silence the voice of reason (Just look at some of our laws and basic double-standard rules of society)
- eosp, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1Yeah, most of us Christians are boring and quiet. But we're not newsworthy.
- init100, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2You can thank George W Bush, who seems to go out of his way to paint himself as a stupid, ignorant, bible-pushing Texan, even though he was born in Connecticut.
- redwallhp, on 06/04/2008, -1/+1The last line is great: "Texas, what a country."
- dafragsta, on 06/03/2008, -3/+15This is old and it sounds like *****.
- daftman, on 06/03/2008, -5/+180The sad thing is, these guys will be voting. Good night and good luck America.
- MeatyMcBeef, on 06/03/2008, -1/+39The sad thing is both the left and right have a large portion of their voting block that really has no idea what or who they're voting for.
It sounds unamerican I know but would it be feasible to require people to pass an exam of basic facts about American history and government before obtaining the right to vote? I'm not saying that should be the case, just wondering if it would be a good idea?- oneoverzero, on 06/03/2008, -2/+18While it at first doesn't seem like a bad idea, that's really not democracy. It's oligarchy.
Also, we've proven several times that we are completely inable of running that sort of thing without bias.- inksmithy, on 06/04/2008, -1/+1What difference does that make? America doesn't have a democracy anyway!
The people vote for a President, the results of the vote go to the electoral college which is supposed to echo the results of the popular vote, but has no legal obligation to do so.
Read that again people. There is no legal reason that the electoral college, a group of four or five hundred people, can't decide on a completely different result to the result of the popular vote. That is democracy?
- inksmithy, on 06/04/2008, -1/+1What difference does that make? America doesn't have a democracy anyway!
- stormspire, on 06/03/2008, -1/+15While it sounds like a good idea on paper, you cannot help but wonder who would write the questions on the exam. There would be inherent bias, and, even more sinister, is the ability to rig the questions to exclude certain groups of people. It would be nice to know that everyone voting is knowledgeable, but the definition of "knowledgeable" differs depending on your views.
- exronin, on 06/03/2008, -0/+10"Who was the first president of United States?" Answer that and you get to vote. Or better yet who is the president right now. I bet these people would be weeded out by just that. Not saying thats the way to go.. but just saying it would really be as simple as that.
- lamiaconfitor, on 06/04/2008, -1/+8to suggest that it cannot be done without bias is ridiculous, just don't have government policy makers do it, and stick to basic historical facts, not opinions. I also have no problems with excluding imbeciles from the voting process.
- Synchro, on 06/04/2008, -0/+8They managed to write a test to become a citizen. If the government can do that, they should be able to come up with a test for this topic.
I usually do not give much credit to the bureaucrats, but even I must admit that creating a test could be done. OK, yes it would take a good 10 years, cost $1 Billion and only be 20 questions long, but it could be done.
- Synchro, on 06/04/2008, -1/+4I'd like it if more schools actually tested on your criteria to even get a high school diploma. Just starting there would be magical.
- mhearne, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2Not possible. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 put an end to that sort of thing.
Please see:

- lordsteve, on 06/03/2008, -0/+9I could tell...
- nmnnotmyname, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1Hahaha, well, at least you mentioned the possibility of a sarcasm detection failure. The fact you'd expect someone to be that dumb is really strange, though.
- inksmithy, on 06/04/2008, -0/+0Not that dumb really. Texas was actually a republic all on its own before it joined the union and it still has the right to call a referendum and split itself into five smaller states. It will never happen though. Who gets the Alamo?
- PCDestroyer, on 06/03/2008, -3/+7Oh God, sometimes I hate living in Texas because of people like them. They're so conservative.
- nmnnotmyname, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1lol. Wacky conservatives. Who keeps raising their kids to be conservatives again?
- camg188, on 06/04/2008, -0/+0The really sad thing is that you read this story and thought it was true.
- torressr3, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1The REALLY sad thing is, these guys will be voting and deciding the future of the world.
Suddenly i am not surprised bush won TWICE.
- MeatyMcBeef, on 06/03/2008, -1/+39The sad thing is both the left and right have a large portion of their voting block that really has no idea what or who they're voting for.

- ahawks, on 06/03/2008, -2/+19You think if she'd been stubborn and stuck around, or at ALL challenged their beliefs, they wouldn't have instantly tied her up and dragged her from the back of a pickup for 50 miles?
- TGMD, on 06/03/2008, -1/+5Why don't the Texans just do what we New Englanders do?
At around the 4th grade we run a series of tests to predict who will be an ignorant redneck when they grow up, then we bring them out back and well... let's just say the problem is solved... - whitey9, on 06/04/2008, -1/+6You're ashamed of fictional characters?
- nmnnotmyname, on 06/04/2008, -4/+1A lot of texans just need to kill themselves. Really, Most of them are simply ***** up idiots.
Sometimes I wonder why we don't take the smart people out and just give it to mexico and let them deal with it :P (/sarcasm, for safety, though not quite as much as I'll need for saying that)
- xero69, on 06/03/2008, -8/+93Shun!!! Shun the non-believer!!
(Texas isn't the only place you'll find uneducated religious freaks by the way)- MeatyMcBeef, on 06/03/2008, -21/+2(The internet isn't the only place you'll find uneducated anti-religious freaks who can't accept that religious and non-religious worldviews deserve equal respect by the way)
- 180andback, on 06/03/2008, -2/+14I, for one, look forward to the day when those who worship Our Lord and Savior Jesus of Nazareth the Christ, those who worship Satan, those who worship the Tooth Fairy and Leprechauns, those who worship Zeus, those who worship Russell's Teapot, those who worship Xenu, those who worship Allah, those who worship Hunter S. Thompson, those who worship Bigfoot, and those who worship no one and nothing, can all live together in peace and harmony. But I'm not holding my god damned breath on that one.
- cutchyacokov, on 06/03/2008, -0/+8Dear Pasta!!! You forgot the Spaghetti Monster. Infidel!!
- 180andback, on 06/03/2008, -0/+6I forgot FSM.
- NebCanuck, on 06/04/2008, -2/+3Can you explain to me why you want to be labeled as someone who worships Jesus? Frankly, the Jesus I read about is one who stated himself that he wasn't here to bring peace to the world, but division, and division so intense that it would pit family members against one another (Luke 12:51). If you truly worship a being who made such a statement, how can you propose that we should strive for universal "peace and harmony?"
Either embrace it or reject it. What's the point of claiming to ascribe to a certain viewpoint when you clearly don't? Do you want to be popular amongst Christians? Do you believe that somehow Christianity's "other" teachings are worth having, barring the ones that suggest there is some sort of judgment or authority, so much so that you would don the mantle of one who believes in those other, "negative" things? Or maybe you really don't believe in anything, and you just want to talk the talk your parents presented you with when you were younger?
And by all means, give me an explanation. I'm a Christian, and believe that the Bible is God's living, authoritative word, but I'm far more willing to entertain the propositions made by someone who doesn't believe as I do if they actually present me with some coherent argument in favour of their perspective. I may still think they're wrong, but I respect their ability to think. I can't say that much for people who proclaim a message and then twist it mindlessly to make it nicer for themselves and those around them. So please, inform me as to how you come to the conclusion that worshiping Christ is synonymous with this happy-go-lucky morality to which you ascribe? - 180andback, on 06/04/2008, -0/+6@NebCanuck:
Dude, what the ***** are you talking about? Are you a writer? Do you write novels? Are you a novelist? Been working on a novel? Is this an excerpt? Do you think I'm Christian? Hello? What?
No. - NebCanuck, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1@180andback:
My apologies, I misread your initial statement about "Our Lord and Saviour Jesus of Nazareth the Christ". Glad you don't claim to be a Christian.
Lots of Christians I speak to have that very belief you hold, however. And it makes no sense to me, which is why I wanted an explanation. Although it's popular to bring up articles like this that take potshots at the conservative Christians (who were in the wrong too, since they don't seem to understand the loving side of the Bible), the most common Christian belief these days falls closer to your statement above.
As it is, I'd applaud you for not holding your breath on that one, since it doesn't make any sense whatsoever that a Christian would preach universal tolerance.
Oh, and I'd still be glad to have any said Christians explain their POV, please, since I don't see why you'd want to be labeled as Christians?
- fmaxwell, on 06/03/2008, -4/+6Stop being foolish. Why should be have equal respect for a world view based on a belief in an invisible, all-powerful, sky-daddy that sheep herders and farmers made up 2000 years ago? That's like saying that we should have just as much respect for grown-ups who believe in the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, and the Tooth Fairy.
Atheists tend to be more intelligent and better-educated than those who are religious. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religiosity_and_intel ...- 180andback, on 06/03/2008, -2/+4Come on, be fair. God's been around practically forever. It's Jesus who was made up 2,000 years ago.
- Theowningone, on 06/03/2008, -0/+6comment dugg for making sense and "sky-daddy" lol
- fmaxwell, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2@180andback: There's evidence that Jesus actually existed. There is no evidence that "God" exists now or ever did.
- 180andback, on 06/04/2008, -1/+1@fmaxwell: Right you are, but my comment was funny, and yours wasn't, and therefore I'm correct.
- fmaxwell, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2@180andback: I'm well-known for having a great sense of humor, so you can trust me when I tell you that your comment wasn't really very funny.
- camg188, on 06/04/2008, -0/+0Stop being foolish? There's no definitive evidence to prove either the existence or non-existence of God. That's why they call it faith. If you look at the nature of the universe and try to wrap your mind around the meaning and possibilities of concepts like infinite space, infinite time and the genesis of the universe and you still cannot even consider the possibility of the existence of God, well, that's just close-minded.
- gutistg, on 06/03/2008, -2/+5I am well educated, anti-religious, a freak, and I will NEVER accept that religious and non-religious worldviews deserve equal respect.
- nmnnotmyname, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1Shut the ***** up you ignorant biggot. Go kill some more people for no reason.
(And in case you're wondering, the source of much hate from us does come from religious people acting superior. I'll never forget when I was talking to a friend about scientology and they thought it was athiesm...)
- 1timeuser, on 06/04/2008, -0/+6Linux has pretty much gotten to that point with the x window system. Have you even used a modern linux distro? Also why you think "open source" has anything to do with a command line is beyond me. It's just free software that shares its source code with everyone. Why the hell would that be a bad thing?
- gahal, on 06/04/2008, -0/+4Just one example, clear the print spool in windows when something ***** up and jobs are stuck at "deleting":
GUI: click many, many times moving the mouse all over the place to stop a service, go a number of dirs deep in explorer and delete some files (all of which are hidden by default, dirs and files), then restart the service.
Command prompt: type 3 fairly short commands to stop the service, delete the files (using tab to shortcut over half the typing), and start the service.
Not needed, but pretty damn handy. - gahal, on 06/04/2008, -0/+4My above comment was @ Eaststand.
@1timeuser, she was wearing a BSD shirt not a Linux one. Pretty damn similar cars, but different engines under the hood. - 1timeuser, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1gahal, your right... It's just weird to mention BSD these days. Replace linux with BSD in my last comment.
- 1timeuser, on 06/03/2008, -0/+10... windows has a command prompt.
- Archer007, on 06/03/2008, -0/+8Because of it's clear adherence to standards, of course. Oh, wait...
- PopcornDave, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2Because the Devil gives you something you actually want in return for your soul?
- Eaststand, on 06/03/2008, -11/+0because its better than open source, anything with a command line is very 80s
- KaivenTor, on 06/03/2008, -1/+18Hmm... Well, I guess the only constructive thing to do in that type of a situation would be to tell them all about the Church of SCO and where their headquarters are...

- bsonline, on 06/03/2008, -9/+3I'm suprised, and glad, she didn't get hurt. I could honestly see two rednecks justifying raping a "satanist". With that being said, I can see where they are coming from, too. I have no problem with the cute little devil at all - but if you believe in a symbol of evil, I'm sure you don't want to see it paraded around. The poor dumb rednecks just aint had no home trainin'.
- bsonline, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2I think it should be noted that while I see how the primitive redneck brain works, I'm not agreeing with it.
- mizike, on 06/03/2008, -6/+2it's probably true, you can't fake that kind of condescension, it can only fully develop while sitting in a darkened basement in front of a unix command line....

- keviniskool, on 06/03/2008, -0/+13Just give them Ubuntu Christian Edition.
(Wasn't that the reason they made satanic edition?) - leha, on 06/03/2008, -1/+7There is a muslim edition http://www.ubuntume.com/
Probably as scary as devil one for many americans. - RandaII, on 06/03/2008, -8/+3umm why does every ***** thread that is related to unix have to have ***** ubuntu in it? Keep it to you self ***** assholes.
- canthraxp, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3Fact: The word "*****" and all their derivatives won't get you an extra digg boost (by looking at your comments).
It just happens that ubuntu has a "Satanic Edition" which is a parody of the CE, that was completely related to original subject. And even if they mention ubuntu, who cares? Digg is about user generated comments/subjects, if ubuntu comes as top, then it must be popular then. No one forces you to read the comments, even better, no one forces to produce that crap you call writing.

In fact Multiple schools I'm sure- SLockhart, on 06/03/2008, -0/+4At my school the football team was called the Red Devils. Because of that I never would have played for them...well that and the fact that I was 110lbs soaking wet at that time. The rednecks in the article are just being ridiculous though.
- telekid, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2My Durango, Colorado high school prides itself in being the "Durango Demons." Once or twice a year, we see a letter to the editor of our local paper stating that students are being demoralized because of the school mascot. The student body generally replies with a nicer version of "go ***** yourself."

- InuX, on 06/03/2008, -1/+13A true geek would have pulled out a laptop with BSD installed.
- linuxpenguin, on 06/03/2008, -0/+84.3BSD is from 1986. Back then you probably would've been hard-pressed to find a laptop that could run BSD without spending a fortune.
- cesclaveria, on 06/03/2008, -0/+6I think this comes from a time were laptops were not as common as today.
- InuX, on 06/04/2008, -0/+4My bad, didn't realize it was that old :/
- linuxpenguin, on 06/03/2008, -3/+13A simple Google search shows that this release of BSD is from over 20 years ago - June 1986. Most people hadn't even seen (or used) Windows probably. Can't blame them for not knowing what BSD was.
- HamNCheese, on 06/04/2008, -1/+7Right. Because so many people know about BSD today...
- elnerdo, on 06/03/2008, -1/+14I don't think that this story is actually true.

- gnalakalaciath5, on 06/03/2008, -3/+17I don't understand why our country hasn't installed an intelligence filter on the voting booths yet.
- mctom987, on 06/03/2008, -1/+9Simple enough; said country isn't intelligent enough to do so.
- bugsysservant, on 06/03/2008, -1/+5Like a maze? "You must be at least as smart as the common mouse to vote"?
- Prism123, on 06/03/2008, -4/+1because that would be unconstitutional, learn you're history this was already tried in the past to disenfranchise the poor. Not that the poor aren't intelligent, but any sort of poll test undoubtedly favors the rich who can afford better education.
- tehbored, on 06/04/2008, -0/+4Not a knowledge test, and intelligence test. The rich would fare no better than the poor. Although it's still unconstitutional.

Windows = christianity -- mainstream, generally accepted amongst the majority, the default position for most north americans
Mac = buddhism -- less mainstream but still well known, adopted by a small but growing minority
*nix = scientology -- not mainstream, represents an exceedingly small percentage of the population; the mainstream simply cannot understand why it exists if they're even aware of it - Xabora, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3Heh, the site is running on Linux.

- MattGilley, on 06/03/2008, -8/+13Come to Texas if you want to know what it is like, don't take the word of some idiot to tell you what our state is like. Like the assumption that we ride horses to get to school and work? What ***** world do you live in?
- ahawks, on 06/03/2008, -5/+10Most of us are aware that your state is quite large, and has a very diverse population.
Perhaps you could realize the same thing, and accept that various regions and subcultures of your state are, well, those "natives" she was writing about. - publiclurker, on 06/03/2008, -3/+4And be a human sacrifice in some sort of harvest ritual, I think not!
