What Microsoft does not want you to know about Netflix deal
tgdaily.com — Earlier this week, Microsoft and Netflix announced that movie streaming will be coming to the Xbox 360. This could be a big deal. But if you are really interested in watching Netflix content on your Xbox, you don ’t have to wait and you don’t have to pay twice. If you have an Xbox 360 and a Windows Vista PC, you have everything you need.

- diggB, on 07/16/2008, -6/+169Being able to stream Netflix movies and shows directly to your xbox without having to own a separate Vista PC seems like a pretty good deal to me.
- IKORKYI, on 07/17/2008, -1/+19doesn't seem like they "didn't want me to know" i could already do it with a vista pc, its probably more along the lines of, oh, say, making it so anyone can do it. i could be wrong
- RedViper1999, on 07/17/2008, -2/+27I guess the guy who wrote this figures everyone already has vista instead of XP still.
- Doubleminy, on 07/17/2008, -1/+6Or a Mac
- mediaphile, on 07/17/2008, -0/+6And that no one already has an Xbox Live subscription.
- IEatHamburgers, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4And that everyone who does have Vista has Premium or Ultimate. (Business edition here)
- Ryosen, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Business edition here, too, and I'm pissed. To make this work now you need the Windows Media Center, which only comes with Home Premium or Ultimate. Business doesn't have it. The retail price for Home Premium is $140. Ultimate is $220. Business is $200.
Now, Microsoft has an upgrade option called "Anytime Upgrade" which lets you bump the license up to a higher level. This works because all versions of Vista are the same, it's just a question of what's activated and what you paid for. Since the difference in retail price between Business and Ultimate is $20, I figure that's worth it to be able to stream Netflix to my xbox. Twenty bucks. So far, so good, right?
Of course not. This is Microsoft, remember? How much is the "anytime" upgrade to go from Business to Ultimate?
$140.
And they can't figure out why people just pirate their software...
- bensashi, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3I'm glad this was the first comment. This was my exact thought upon skimming the article. It's not as if Microsoft has said "NEVER BEFORE HAS SOMEONE BEEN ABLE TO WATCH NETFLIX ON THE 360!!!!". I know it's a possibility, and I've seen the videos of it. It's pretty sluggish, but it does work. Guess what, I don't have a Media Center PC or Vista, and even if I did, I would prefer this method. Tempest in a teapot.
- DaHuuuuuudge, on 07/17/2008, -0/+8The person that wrote this just goes on and on about the extra cost.
"I personally have been streaming Netflix movies for a while now, and I pay nothing for it, except for my Netflix subscription."
But the only extra cost is Xbox Live gold, and a lot of people already have that. Do this if you have Xbox Live, and do it the other way if you don't. It doesn't sound like some secret Microsoft doesn't want us to know to me.
Buried as inaccurate. - ZenMojo, on 07/17/2008, -2/+1Netflix is coming out with a Linux version of their software, which probably explains why Sony said "screw it."
- PeterNorton, on 07/16/2008, -20/+12I don't mind having a choice. I still find it strange that Microsoft ties this service to Xbox Live Gold. Would be nice if they make it available for free.
- LiquidShield, on 07/17/2008, -11/+5You really can't do anything online with the 360 unless you have gold service so that makes sense that they would do that. Besides it's Microsoft they are into to make money just like netflix.
- B1663r, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4You are free to download movies tv shows and demos (a week later than gold members) and arcade games, on the xbox without gold membership. Also you are still free to play music from your computer and use your xbox as a MCE device with silver.
Considering that Microsoft will likely cannibalize their movie and tv show sales with this service, requiring people to have gold seems quite reasonable to me.
- B1663r, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4You are free to download movies tv shows and demos (a week later than gold members) and arcade games, on the xbox without gold membership. Also you are still free to play music from your computer and use your xbox as a MCE device with silver.

- LANjackal, on 07/16/2008, -9/+11Exactly, it's just another viewing option, especially for those without Vista PCs (or any PC at all, for that matter). As for those with properly equipped PCs, the saying that fools and their money are easily parted applies.
- Phearce, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3"As for those with properly equipped PCs, the saying that fools and their money are easily parted applies."
Not necessarily -- game consoles connect ot televisions/home theaters, PCs connect to monitors. As you point out this is another option, and that's usually a good thing.- h4ppydotcom, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1Most new HDTVs have a VGA input, or there are other ways to plug a PC into a TV.
- jamesdew, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3Connect a COMPUTER to a TELEVISION, that's craaaazy
- NCg8r, on 07/17/2008, -2/+0Crazy, loud, power-hungry, inconvenient... it's a lot of things.
- Tenoq, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3@ NCg8r -
Power hungry? Hardly - only if you ignore the fact your new plasma or LCD is drawing more than twice the power of the average PC. And loud? Only if you don't know how to build a proper HTPC...
@ h4ppydotcom -
Yeah, but some manufacturers think it's funny to nerf the VGA input on your HDTV. My old man has a Panasonic that supports 1080i over component, yet only 640x480 via VGA. Yet my no-name brand TV does 1080i over VGA no worries... :p
- Pardis, on 07/17/2008, -1/+7How does that saying apply?, if you already have a gold subscripiton, and netflix you do not need to pay anything else. so where is the money being parted? and a gold sub is only $50 a year and you get more then just netflix streaming with that.
- Phearce, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3"As for those with properly equipped PCs, the saying that fools and their money are easily parted applies."
- MarkusX, on 07/16/2008, -1/+16I guess it is an extra value for those who don't have Vista PC.
But Window Media Center would probably allow you to stream it right to your TV anyway, right?
...and that was available for XP already, if I'm not mistaken.- SreyaNotfilc, on 07/17/2008, -4/+1I've read somewhere that you do indeed need a Vista PC for the downloaded file to work. Here's the link I've found... http://lifehacker.com/396881/turn-your-xbox-360-in ...
- B1663r, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4Nope, if you have a XP Windows Media Center computer it works fine with that.
- moush, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Wouldn't stream as fast anyways if you have to stream to your computer in order to stream again to your xbox.
- Tenoq, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Probably work with Windows Home Server too, as that has some media serving capabilities.

- godzillaWax, on 07/17/2008, -2/+82This is a story how? Microsoft has promoted the interaction of Windows Media Center and the 360 since the system came out. It's not like they're hiding this information.
And besides, what ground do you have to call Microsoft out on a nonexistent issue when the service is free?- B1663r, on 07/17/2008, -14/+7It is Microsoft, they are evil. Any rash judgment is fair.
- B1663r, on 07/17/2008, -2/+4LOL, that was sarcasm for the sarcastically impaired...
- yaosio, on 07/17/2008, -3/+3They don't want you to know you can connect your PC to your xbox even though they have said so! It says it right there in the title!
- B1663r, on 07/17/2008, -14/+7It is Microsoft, they are evil. Any rash judgment is fair.
- grimfandango, on 07/17/2008, -1/+32for all of Microsoft's faults, the XBOX 360 team are awesome. watching streamed movies on my TV, without having to connect up my laptop, gets my vote. sure, I could connect up my laptop if I really wanted too, but my xbox is already hooked up and it frees up my laptop if I need it somewhere else (like at work!)
- FurDieNosferatu, on 07/17/2008, -7/+1I don't plan on getting the Xbox Netflix deal, but some of us don't have Windows Vista Ultimate and a modded 360.
- Keloran, on 07/17/2008, -2/+3he refered to an xbox1 not a 360 when he said modded btw

I dont have any type of Windows Media Center...My gold account is cheaper than upgrading to any Vista Media Center OS.
Buried for being an *****.- solid12345, on 07/17/2008, -1/+15Not to mention the average joe doesn't even know what the hell a RSS feed is and you are going to mock them for not having a modded Xbox?
- mrn111, on 07/17/2008, -0/+10And maybe, just maybe, they are people who are Live Gold members and Netflix subscribers.
I'm trying to figure out what "extra cost" this ***** is talking about.
- mrn111, on 07/17/2008, -0/+10And maybe, just maybe, they are people who are Live Gold members and Netflix subscribers.
- schneb, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1"this guy is clearly a pretentious bastard and I stopped reading there"

- solid12345, on 07/17/2008, -1/+15Not to mention the average joe doesn't even know what the hell a RSS feed is and you are going to mock them for not having a modded Xbox?
- waydee, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3TVersity gets my vote, on the fly transcoding of your media from XP/Vista to the XBOX 360, no need to convert your files to get them to play nicely with media centre.
- logicalnoise, on 07/17/2008, -1/+8which has ***** all to do about netflix and tv versity was uninstalled on my computer the day MS started supporting divx and xvids.
- mman426, on 07/17/2008, -0/+0transcoding is bad solution you lose quality and fast forward options, plus xbox supports good amount of codecs now, and ones it doesn't ps3 does, so I have a nice equal balance. I might get netflix subscription though, just to share movies with friends
- higgy345, on 07/17/2008, -1/+18Isn't this the 100th time a story has been posted about this setup? Besides if I were to get a vista machine just for MCE so I could stream stuff I wouldn't need my 360 to stream things, it would be hooked up to my TV.
Yes it is cool and all but 90% of the 360 population doesn't want to mess with this or wants to buy a vista machine to run MCE too.
Buried.- Pic0, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3exactly
i saw this a while ago and it said the plugin was in beta... ***** that im not wasting my time
i already have gold because i play online, ill get netflix later
- Pic0, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3exactly
- Tempest261, on 07/17/2008, -8/+2You know, the way Microsoft has been shoving Xbox live Gold around, pushing micro transactions, and making it difficult for companies like Valve, Infinity Ward, and Epic Games from releasing free content/maps has me thinking that the Xbox 360 will be my last "Xbox" for a while. Next generation I think I'll go Sony. They've had their head up their collective ass this generation, but they don't seem to pick up their customers by the feet and shake them for loose change the way that Microsoft does. Bottom line: owning an Xbox 360 pisses me off wayyyyy too much.
- Browzer, on 07/17/2008, -1/+11"Bottom line: owning an Xbox 360 pisses me off wayyyyy too much."
Be prepared to be more pissed off when you try Sony's online capabilities. - munkyxtc, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3You do realize that you buy content via PSN also right?
Microtransactions are not exclusive to XBL and are not going anywhere for a long time. The only way to really protest is to speak with your wallet and hope that everyone else follows.
- Browzer, on 07/17/2008, -1/+11"Bottom line: owning an Xbox 360 pisses me off wayyyyy too much."
- RawGamer, on 07/17/2008, -0/+17From MajorNelson's blog, here's the description of the feature:
"LIVE Party system. Create a party of up to eight friends, and stay with them from one game to another, or watch a Netflix movie together, or share a slideshow of your personal photos. It works with all Xbox 360 titles, not just upcoming games. LIVE Party allows up to eight people to chat in the dashboard, so you can meet up before playing."
So this feature is not just about streaming movies like you did before, it's also about being able to watch them with friends. Thi is why a Gold subscription is needed.- Jethris, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Which seems pretty stupid. Both members have to have Netflix subscriptions. Other than watching a romantic movie with a long distance girlfriend, I don't care if they had this option or not.
- Alphateam, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4I set this up and it was kinda...sort of a pain in the ass.
On the plus side though, you can stream the entire steaming library. From the sounds of it the solo 360 one will only be 10,000 titles. (about 10% of what is available)- solid12345, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3*only* 10,000 titles?
- Alphateam, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1Yes, most are crap though. They have all 12 seasons of Murder She Wrote, The Rockford Files, Keeping Up Appearances...they got decent stuff too, but WAY more crap than good stuff.
- logicalnoise, on 07/17/2008, -0/+310,000 is just netflix's current marketing count for thei watch it now service. 360 will ahve access to all the watch it now content.
- ConceptualTrap, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1Yeah, that's just their watch it now feature. The thing about NetFlix streaming is that the vast majority of crap that you can stream you wouldn't want to. Hopefully this 360 deal will bring new releases and a wider library. It'd be nice if this was the first step towards having nearly the entire library available for streaming.
- solid12345, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3*only* 10,000 titles?
- EarthBoundX5, on 07/17/2008, -0/+6I doubt they don't want you to know about it. I think they are just seeing something that can be done, and making it available to the everyone else.
So in other words, the author is a moron. - Evildudetx, on 07/17/2008, -2/+3Not to mention, who wants to put their account information into a third party application? This is exactly the sort of activity we have been telling our parents and others to not do for years.
While some may not like that MS is incorporating this into their new dashboard, it does make it a lot safer for those who are not IT gods. - sethorama99, on 07/17/2008, -1/+5Buried for trying to make an issue out of something that is completely and totally obvious and a non-issue to everyone. Why not a blog called "What Netflix does not want you to know about the Microsoft deal?" It could talk about how people will have to pay Netflix for the right to watch Watch It Now movies on their Xbox. SHOCKING!
- solid12345, on 07/17/2008, -0/+14"was sitting in a coffee shop with a friend and learned of the announcement via my cellphone RSS feed"
Before Microsoft 360 Netflix I was into French films, Indie Rock, and not bathing, now I am watching football and high-fiving again. - wTheOnew, on 07/17/2008, -1/+10What's next to hit the front page? 'Microsoft charges for games!!!!11!!1!!1'

- MarkusX, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3your comment is a little off topic,
but I am with you on this.
- MarkusX, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3your comment is a little off topic,
- cmoney298, on 07/17/2008, -2/+3Streaming Netflix is good and all, I use it, but the biggest down side to it is that a lot of the movies that are able to be streamed are not even recent, they are from the late 90's or earlier. Not a whole lot of new movies are able to be streamed. Its good but could be loads better.
- uptown, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3It will come. Netflix has already stated that physical media is destined to disappear. As this happens, and as more users adopt their streaming service, and as bandwidth gets cheaper I imagine they'll expand their offerings on this platform, and also increase the resolution of the content delivered via this channel. Think of this as a long drawn-out beta test for Netflix's future business model .... streaming-only subscriptions delivered via a myriad of set-top boxes.
- NCg8r, on 07/17/2008, -1/+0Dugg for all 12 seasons of "Murder She Wrote".
- moush, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1You probably should get better taste in movies before you pay for something like Netflix.
- ktorbeck, on 07/17/2008, -2/+3I just wish they would do this as download not streaming.
- bcos, on 07/17/2008, -3/+6Pretty much anybody who is serious about 360 has a gold account. Quit your bitching.
- NCg8r, on 07/17/2008, -1/+0What about people who are flippant about the 360?
- orphenshadow, on 07/17/2008, -0/+7Burried because the article is completely off base. Anyone who has used the hack to stream netflix knows that its a pain to set up, and is slow as hell, Its almost to the point its not functional, not to mention the costs of having to license a media center operatating system. Personally i welcome the idea of having a well written, officially supported option. As far as the cost of having to have xbox live gold.. C'mon now... Does the article really think that we dont already have a subscription, or does he assume that the service has nothing else to offer? Xbox live is worth the 50 dollars a year, and it beats the hell out of sony or nintendos offerings.
- gonzo1043, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1I agree with orphenshadow. Buried, hack works but not what I would consider fluid. Besides many Xbox owners already have a Gold account without NetFlix.
- drjekelmrhyde, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1This is the official site for the so called hack
http://myweb.cableone.net/eluttmann04/projects/vmc ... - dbldn, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4Alert the internets - Netflix can be had with just a simple hack. Just follow these 18 steps with these specific pieces of software in this specific order and you wait 2 hours for your low res videos to download. Alert the internets - all hands on deck!
Buried for being unnecessarily inflammatory. - Zpanzer, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2So all this Netflix, is it US only?
It's great tha they make all theese new adjustments, but what the hell am I doing to do with it if half of it aint avaible in denmark?- Aitese, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2What I love the most is we pay HIGHER prices for this gear in Europe but always recieve less for our money:
No backwards compatibility in PS3's, no movies in iTunes, certain apps on iPhone don't work here (Pandora etc...) No on demand movies from Amazon...and how do we show our displeasure at getting the narrow end of the wedge? We line up and buy buy buy! - Jethris, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1Move to the US?

- Laloj, on 07/17/2008, -2/+0http://www.tech-exposed.com
Better to be setup as a download than Streaming. Quality would be much better and you could setup films to download for the day and watch them whenever you want. I guess they dont want you to be able to do that. - archlich, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2So instead of having one appliance running, i.e. roku box, you now have to run a pc and xbox with a subscription service? This would be much more appealing if you only needed to stream directly to the xbox.
- chairlift, on 07/17/2008, -0/+0The people on these tech sites don't understand that the average person would like a simple solution at their finger tips. The lifehacker guide probably goes into some detail that the average person wouldn't want to go through the hassle of. These companies are trying to run a business and continue to offer new and improved features through their products to make the customer happier. If you don't want to pay for Xbox Live then do it the free way, if you already have Xbox Live then why the hell not, right?
- daizengar, on 07/17/2008, -2/+0A Windows Vista PC? Do people seriously say: I need a Windows Vista PC. ?
You can stream Netflix using any OS, there is no specific one needed.
To make matters worse, the demographic of people who own an Xbox 360 probably torrent their favorite music (Disturbed and ICP) on their desktop/laptop (of various quality and brand). To make matters worse, the quality of movie you get to stream isn't worth an HD setup, regardless. The most common use for this service is something to watch at work (a comfy desk job) or on your laptop in various locations.
If you're incompetent, lazy or poor enough to have no other option than to stream Netflix on your 360 - (or even use the similar PS3 video service) then I suppose the only beneficial thing to come out of this entire gesture is job security for IT professionals.
But its still pretty sad when the giggly blond co-eds next door can pirate movies, music and stream video - and the console crowd get all funny in the pants over a mediocre service.- synt4x, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Not quite any OS - you can't stream from a Mac because Apple still hasn't opened up DRM in Quicktime for third parties to use. So regardless of what the jackass in the article says, *I* still find the Netflix integration important to me.
- B1663r, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1He seems ignorant that the Xbox has had a video service for some time now, that is like the one on the PS3, and this this is new functionality in addition to that, so I wouldn't listen to anything he has to say after that.
- madzack, on 07/17/2008, -0/+0you need vista media center to stream netflix movies to your xbox360 right now.
half of you people don't read anything entirely.
i don't know how streaming a movie from netflix on your 360 would make you incompetent lazy or poor.

- mman426, on 07/17/2008, -2/+2nobody cares. You can do that on 360 as well. And if you were really a video game fan it wouldn't matter because you would have both systems
- kfsutops, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1Who cares? Have you SEEN what is available through Netflix online stuff? It's crap. Of course it would be convenient to have the stuff on a 360, but get real. The content is complete *****. Who is watching this crap?
- madzack, on 07/17/2008, -0/+0i don't know its been getting a lot better since they launched the streaming service. theres a ton of good tv shows on there and a lot of stuff I've already seen and wouldn't want in my regular netflix queue but would be happy to watch on that off day when netflix is sending me movies. that being said there is still a bunch of crap in there but its getting better.
- patricks, on 07/17/2008, -1/+5It seems to me that this story's author is a bonafied moron.
Are there people out there who have an xbox 360 and not a vista pc? Of course.
Would these people be willing to pay a subscription to effortlessly download and watch netflix movies right on their 360? Sure.
Does Netflix/Microsoft have a right to charge for this service? Absolutely.- mman426, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1You also have to ask if there are people with xb360 and Vista PC but too tech dumb to figure out how to do what he does. That answer is yes.
Also are there people who would like to share those netflix movies with friends all over the world? Of course.
- mman426, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1You also have to ask if there are people with xb360 and Vista PC but too tech dumb to figure out how to do what he does. That answer is yes.
- WVUChrisF, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3I fail to see the issue here.
- anchorman, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1I have a modified original XBOX. I noticed the article mentioned that some people have been able to do this from the original Xbox. Has anyone been able to do this or has anyone found information about how to do so?
- yodasama, on 07/17/2008, -3/+2Vista AND an XBox360, yeah you got everything you need, for severe mental disorders.
- ryankuhn, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Bury it. You don't need a gold account to access the netflix movies on the 360 when it comes out just a silver free account and netflix.... You only need a gold account to watch it in party mode with your friends..... You currently can't do that anyway for free so its comparing apples to oranges.
"Not only will Netflix subscribers be able to watch Netflix movies directly from their Xbox consoles, but they'll be able to share their movie queues with their friends on the 360's online service, Xbox Live. The service will not cost anything extra, beyond the already existing charges for Xbox Live and Netflix."

- ryankuhn, on 07/17/2008, -3/+0What do people not get about the THERE IS NO FEE IF YOU HAVE XBOX (Silver) and NETFLIX? Gold just gives you the 'party features'
- Ricemanstm, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3Gold gives you the online play that you can't get with Silver. And that's addition to the "party" features.
- Ricemanstm, on 07/17/2008, -2/+3More MS bashing...what a surprise. The author sounds like a real tool. I've got Vista, not a fan of it, prefer XP. I think the Netflix idea is a fantastic idea. Now I heard at the MS keynote that there would not be an additional charge for the Netflix service. There are also reports that only part of Netflix's catalog would be available. I think there's still a lot of details left to hammer. Again though, the author is an idiot.
- doshindude, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2I think the real problem here is nobody has/likes Vista and has XP therefore they can't get the deal.
- rexcom, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3This is not some dirty little secret, this girl just has an issue with MS charging for Xbox live. While I think that the price of online play should be included with the system, I have to give a nod to MS for making the live service a lot more robust then the PSN. I have a PS3 and Xbox 360 and prefer the MS online experience.
Also, MS said that if you have a current Netflix account then you can use that feature for free, so you are not paying twice for Netflix or Live. MS just decided to make it easier for the less tech savvy to enjoy this feature who don't know how to access video from their home PC. Also, Netflix will get extra exposure, as if they need it.- mman426, on 07/17/2008, -0/+0He was saying pay twice because apparently he doesn't already have a Gold Subscription. That would mean he would have to pay for Gold in order to use it free. Who cares though, Gold is only $50 per year, which is less than the price of one game.
- B1663r, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Gold is only required to use the Avatar features in conjunction with Netflix, that is watch Netflix movies with your friends.
If you have silver, and then get Netflix you are free to watch the movies by your lonesome.

- B1663r, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1And not required to use Netflix... Gold is only required for community features.
- MrViklund, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3The question is. Has Microsoft specifically said that they don't want "You" to know or is that something that tgdaily.com just made up?
That's the real question.- B1663r, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2The MS haters are spreading massive amounts of disinformation on this one.
First off, Microsoft already had HD pay per view movies and lets you buy tv shows. It is already superior to Sony's offerings and will continue to be for the unforeseeable future.
Gold is as it always was, and is only needed to community networking on xbox.
Netflix will be its own service, which if you subscribe, you get their library of streaming movies.
If you have Netflix AND Gold, then you can watch movies with your friends...

- Netik09, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1Who cares? All the movies available for streaming are crap anyway. You really have to dig through a lot to find anything good. All the good movies are DVD only.
- Wang, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Buried, the title is inaccurate as this has nothing to do with "What Microsoft does not want you to know about Netflix deal" and everything to do with "I have some freeware which already streams netflix from vista to my xbox". Put an accurate title next time...
