Balancing One-Wheeled Scooter
ben.jellybaby.net — I've put together this page to document a one-wheeled balancing scooter / skateboard that I've just finished. It's the culmination of several iterations over the last few years, and definitely my favourite.

- versionist, on 10/12/2007, -19/+27Thanks Balancing One-Wheeled Scooter for turning my son GAY.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4I put an additional wheel in each corner and removed the motor and it's center drive wheel. The thing balances great!
- Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5and that has what to do with the comment you are replying to?
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1It's in reference to 4 out of the 10 words in the parent post. 40% relevance isn't too bad. Check your own.
- Scrappy1850, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2did you guys WATCH the super bowl?
- stattek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20You should patent this before someone else does
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Already did. Prepare to get sued!
- VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8What a great idea you came up with. Good Job on the creation.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7That's awesome. Kudos to you!
- unabomber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13How I supposed to jump over obstacles on it?
- MyMistake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Use very small obstacles.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33Use completely flat obstacles that are flush with the ground.
- unabomber, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4then i should probably wait for a localized version here (russia)
some kind of one-wheeled monster truck, dunno - Soapdish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think what you really want is called a "BC Wheel"; they're pretty fun. A friend of mine attached rockets to one, and rode it.
- onionizer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19we just have to get rid of this last wheel, and it's back to the future!
Great piece of engineering there, much less nerdy then the segway imo. - majordannyboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5looks safe
- lexpattison, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Unless your a five year old in front of someone who let's it get away from them :-)
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51You ever take it off any sweet jumps?
- iwannagofast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9shocks, pegs, lucky!
- michael1406, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I just want to keep +1-ing that all day.
- shartman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5A little bulky, but VERY cool!
Dugg - Jemulov, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I think a bigger or rounder wheel should be used, that way it makes it easier to turn by leaning, just a suggestion.
- th3space, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I'm getting your icon tattooed on my right forearm this weekend...then I'll have my Rebel Alliance/Galactic Empire matching set!
- darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19rounder wheel?
- Jemulov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@darkamster07
I was trying to say a wheel where the tire/rubber part has a round shape or something. A large round surface area allows you to lean and still have an amount of traction. Leaning would allow you to utilize the tire's circular shape to make sharper, more responsive turns. - GeneralKickass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You mean rounder like a ball. That would prolly cause the system to become more unstable.
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Rounder perpendicular to the axle, like a motorcycle tire. GOD.
- Jemulov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Not like a ball. I'm just saying a flat wheel might not be the best kind of wheel. I guess my comment left a lot to be desired with the 'rounder wheel'. I was purely thinking about how the scooter would turn and realized that, without some sort of pivot, it would have to turn by leaning. Flat surfaced tires aren't well suited for something like that so a tire with a shape much like a bicycle's could be a better choice. Like what Nougat said.
- mabhatter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yes, I'd think a bigger wheel would work better. It would let it have more "give" and make turning easier without changing the design much. From the video, it didn't seem to turn quickly enough, but it was similar to a sluggish skateboard. It also didn't seem to be easy enough to control the speed... it should have been easier to slow down and change direction than what the video showed. That could be a big safety problem. But the design is sound. It needs a little more software work to behave better... perhaps a "deadman's" switch tied to weight on the wheel so it doesn't run off on you.
- mikewashere05, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1How do you turn?
Still looks like fun. I'd be interested in seeing the code.
-mike- iwannagofast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10its posted on the site...
- Pests, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, both how to turn.. and the code.
- DagYo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2@jemulov a rounder wheel? is that possible?
- Light11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hope he applied for a patent
- brenttraut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14"Having sex with a fat woman is like riding a scooter -- it's fun until someone sees you."
- Scrappy1850, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2no one will get laid on this thing, but i wouldnt mind my friends seeing me on this
- foxmajik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Way to reinvent the wheel.
- gllopc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I've got next!
- airquotes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1He should use some sort of weather resistant grip tape for the feet..
- ralkram, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Check patent# 20010032743 by searching at the US Patent office at their site (http://www.uspto.gov/patft/). Have a look at the images section and you may see where this skateboard was inspired. If you can't see the images you can download a tiff plugin (http://www.uspto.gov/web/menu/plugins/tiff.htm).
- johnnykalma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1theres nothing there
- runner108, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Do you think it'd be possible to make sharp turns? Didn't see them doing any in the video. I think its a great concept though and I'd love to try it.
- tribaal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I want one. It's as simple as that.
Making it just a little bit faster would be really sweet though. - unruled, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4back to the future anyone?
I think its awesome though.. way cooler then segways - ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Now... it just needs more power! ARG! ARG! ARG! *home improvement*
- sworoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very nice work! Good use of physics, mechanics, electronics, and coding. Looks to be a great start to an engineering marvel. I'm interested to see what ends up happening to this project.
- AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's almost 2015, where the ***** is my hoverboard Mattell?!
- Soapdish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Meh, I've seen a unicycle that did this years ago.
- wierdbeard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This IDEA has been around since the segway, and has actually already been done. There's even a link to it through Trevor Blackwell's site (look at the bottom).

Here's video of it on google video.

An Industrial Design Student at BYU did a Mock-up of the same thing a few years ago. I'm looking for it on the Wayback, I'll post when I find it. - withoutashovel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its be nice if they eventually made the whole thing slimmer and the wheel thinner. it doesnt look very manuverable.
