- iAryeh, on 10/12/2007, -76/+68That is pretty cool.
- Eaglefire, on 10/12/2007, -116/+36Yeah, that's really sweet. Reminds me of the 3d AJAX engine I made for Wi-viz 2 ( http://devices.natetrue.com/wiviz2/wiviz2.html ) which visualizes wireless networks. It's now a part of the DD-WRT operating system.
- DapperScoo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+62Sweet, stupidppl is back with a new account to spam some idiot blog. Let the block party begin.
- vbsurfer, on 10/12/2007, -20/+269I honestly think the controls are clunky and it's pretty lame.
- royall64, on 10/12/2007, -11/+202Great idea, bad execution.
- JaXaL, on 10/12/2007, -5/+121This would be awesome if the navigation would be easier.
- r0ck3tm4nn, on 10/12/2007, -14/+282Do'h! I think Web 3.0 just got leaked...
- yoda715, on 10/12/2007, -0/+52Great Idea. No apparent organization. Needs a lot more work.
- sufferingant, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24I cant click on the links...anyone else?
- Sealab2021, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22A few Changes and this could be really good:
1. Organize Stores; Give the viewer the ability to organize the story's by date, popularity, and category. If by date then new story's appear on top while older stores go down. If by popularity, more popular stores float up while less popular stores sink. Category would cluster.
2. Better Control; Make it like fps control where the mouse looks around and you use WASD to move.
3. Make Portals; Create "portals" where you can fly through it to other sections of digg like Videos, or Upcoming.
4. See Other Users; Allow to see other digg users flying around. - strikerK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13not something i'd go to frequently, but its pretty cool
- mraustin1337, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Agreed that it is too hard to control but it is definitely before it's time. It really is incredibly how far things like flash have come. I mean... 3D dynamic animations in flash. Pretty frickin' cool.
- jmhacc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9why is eaglefire getting dug down his project is cool and relevant to the story and he doesnt benefit financially from you looking at it
- musicfreak21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Kind if mystery meat navigation but a cool idea.
- Lyanto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7How the hell are you supposed to navigate this?
On a side note, I see this story in there somewhere XD - TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6Reminds me of the first time I played the wii. Spinning around in circles for 2 minutes trying to figure things out.
Why can't you click on links? - S1ngular1ty1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I have an idea and I don't care if anyone copies it, but what if you had like a 3d sphere with the best and most popular stories towards the center and as you travel towards the outside of the 3d sphere space the stories become less popular? You could also implement changes in color from the center to the outside and you could show like a web of links between stories like in dig swarm. You could also show the number of users on each story. You could also have zones of newly created stories, newly popular, etc.
Digg needs to go 3d but not in the lame way of the original story in this submission. - Cleanlyness, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31wtf? You stole this from the guy who really made it.
what a loser
http://digg.com/programming/mb3Digg_Digg_goes_3D - Managore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32Yay! I won! The last level is hard.
- fudged71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1damn thats nifty ... i personally kinda like the controls... however, first person shooter controls would be better
- fudged71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3oh god.... imagine swarm in 3D (with good implementation, of course)
drool - Domza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Reminds me of the Unix interface in Jurassic Park.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I would code this in 4D but I just don't have the time.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Did mention this was a dupe?
Why you disrespectful noobs.
- netburnr, on 10/12/2007, -53/+6I don't get it....why?
- lovek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+55a) Because you can
b) Why not? - converge, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3Why not?
- kjm16, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2why why not?
ok, shutting up now. - ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8This person clearly has some skill. Perhaps he could be hired on by digg to do some slick ***** like this for them? That would be an awesome reason why.
- lovek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+55a) Because you can
- Blackmane, on 10/12/2007, -14/+5Thats good, little slow but that probably my computer.
Good Digg- sLydE, on 10/12/2007, -81/+5looks pretty crisp and fast on this black macbook
- Rhine23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+66What does the color of your computer have to do with performance?
- adidos, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Nothing to do with performance...only cost.
He's definitely a douche bag for spending the extra $$ for the color. - Gr8Pumpkin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12because black is cool, but silver is better
- popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+92@rhine23:
Don't you know? In this country, everything black is faster by default. Watch the olympics sometime. ;) - dankosaur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Runs very smoothly on mine, which isn't even a great computer. Probably browser is pretty important--I'm still running Firefox 1.5.
- foobar5892, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11You guys have no idea. It's the same principle as car decals that add horsepower. It's a proven fact.
- snlildude87, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Because once you go black, you never go back?
- sLydE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I was simply commenting to show that it doesn't run like ass on all machines. The color of the computer only matters because that's the easiest way to show which computer I am running that it runs crisply on.
Now, I could be a "douche bag" and go around digging down legitimate comments and bashing the helpful people around here...but that just wouldn't be me...
Oh, and I didn't pay $0.01 for this laptop
- geoffreyireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Thats pretty kickass. Dugg!
- thatsbologna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Wow that really is cool...kinda hard to navigate though, I'd much rather use a nice conventional list instead of traveling through space to find the top stories
- manifestdata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Looks like the site is about to feel the Digg 3d (effect)
- WhoIsScott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7thats pretty cool. Its like a Digg universe (hope that makes sence)
- royall64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It actually makes more sense than usual...
- captainbeah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Freaking sweet!
- Waterispoison, on 10/12/2007, -1/+55Shh...I'm hacking the Gibson...
- mhuggins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Apparently I'm the only one who doesn't understand this comment...
- Waterispoison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://youtube.com/watch?v=x3XzPhdBx9g
It's from the movie "Hackers" were apparently all you need to know about hacking is that supercomputers are 3d interfaces and you fly through them. - Backlash, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1wtf?
- Managore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You also have to be really good at rollerblading and have a nickname composed of two completely unrelated words.
- theyallsaypete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah... but Angelina Jolie was girl-next-door hot in that one.... not skanky hot like she is now.
- carn311, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Cool...but not useful.
Dugg nonetheless- chrism1128, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You beat me to it.
Great effect, but why?
- chrism1128, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You beat me to it.
- techmonk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1very cool.
- Cronus6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Very cool, but scroll doesn't zoom for me. (FireFox on XP)
- ByteGuerilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Same. Firefox on MacOS X, using the two-finger scroll on the trackpad. Shame.
- invader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3flash's scroll wheel detection doesn't work on macs.. it should work find on FF on XP.. did you click once on it to make sure the flash embed had focus? that might be why it's not working for you
pretty dumb that it doesn't have alternative controls, considering the feature it relies on is not ubiquitous. - HUKI365, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Works for me in Firefox on a Bootcamped MacBook using two finger scroll.
- drilldown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Non-technically speaking: left click the mouse in the middle of the screen and try scrolling/zoom. If you're on a dial-up or slower connection, wait 60sec. and repeat. Firefox with Flash and Java enabled view it just fine under winXP. Come to think of it, I don't recall turning off the Java blockers. Left click and repeat. Scroll. -techie out.
- ryanonfire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1omg :O awesoma
- Panda200x, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Because 2D isn't good enough ;)
- SystmBetatester, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1pretty awesome, wonder if digg will add something like this in the future.
- actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, because I always wanted staying topical to offer the challenge of EV Override.
- Modred189, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Nicely done, but clicking on the icons does not allow you to see the original citation or comments...
That would be more useful. - nhassan, on 10/12/2007, -40/+3seen it before
- royall64, on 10/12/2007, -8/+35Seen this before?
http://digg.com/img/c-bury.png - AbsoluteMSTR, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5this is a duplicate, like he said, seen it before
- m1ch184, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2and judging by the 4301 diggs currently, either:
A. No one cares
or
B. Enough people haven't seen it that think it is worth digging
- royall64, on 10/12/2007, -8/+35Seen this before?
- guyperson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Kinda slow, but still awesome. It's not an efficient way to browse Digg though.
- ZernanToledo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah it's pretty, but functionally useless. I wonder if he's after a job?
- kill4killin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2That is the coolest thing I have seen with digg in a long time!
I just wish that you had to click along with move the mouse to move the screen because when I go to my address bar or something say to hit reload or to bookmark it...it keeps scrolling...it doesn't know the edge of its window it seems - osmow, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Found a new #1
- dantelope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6From a technical perspective, that's pretty cool looking. Outside of that, it appears to be entirely useless right now. In the 3D space all you can see from afar is the number of diggs. Which means people navigate in your world by ... what? Seeking out higher numbered diggs? That's not a problem space for a 3D solution. Now, if you added color for frequency of digg or comment, and perhaps hue or shape or size for age of the story, and maybe some other indicators, it might make it more interesting. But it would still be a bad solution in search of a nonexistent problem in my opinion.
- diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1It froze my mouse ball.
- actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Cancer is a terrible thing.
- theMurdocVolta, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5That's Dumb.
You're Both Dumb. - royall64, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Ignorance at its best^^^
- battleroyalex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Pretty cool but 2D is easier to navigate honestly
- AshTR, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This was on the front page a few months ago.
- diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4In a couple of months, I'll bet you see it again.
- AshTR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't be surprised...
- KragTheDigger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2..can I get a version to show my source code like this, please ?
Thanks (been honestly waiting for this a long long time)
~K - jakster4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kind of fun to use but in a way useless; the controls are anoying, and having to zoom into each one gets annoying. Try making it a straight path to follow, like a tunnel view or something. Also it would be nice to see a dugg visualizer like this.
- Nato592, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's cool. It takes a few seconds to adjust when you get back to the normal digg.
- Kev1000000, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2This is old as hell...
- ToadMcFrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is a great concept, but it is too cumbersome for day to day use: I would hate to think that I missed a really cool digg because I didn't take the time to fully search the page. Kudos to the coders, though.
- Rikushix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Cool, but I just don't see the point.
- leftfoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Use your arrow keys to zoom.
- TheRealDeuce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another one of these, it's cool.. sure. This always seemed like something to do just because you can.
But when you actually use this it's annoying, I'll stick with my old fashion Digg =) - cfuchs10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty Amazing....But what is the algorithm behind story placement in the 3d world?
- psokarovski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A very very cool but i think not very usefull idea. Things besides the design should have functionality. Come on who will go to digg on 3D where you have to chase the posts?
Anyway one digg for the work it really looks great. and the physics it's awesome. - farr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Scrolling doesn't work for me. (Firefox / XP)
- sufferingant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You have to wait, then reselect the window. Then you can scroll
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Those lying bastards!
"mb3dengine.com requires the Flash plugin and you are seeing
this message because you don't have it! "
I DO have it, dangit!
- Retuow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2pretty cool but this was on digg already a long time ago
- Broelke4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sweet 0.0
- carlosthebest, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1most useless thing i've seen today. so hard to navigate
- Fjinks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2They should implement a weapon that diggs down any story it hits.
And anicejew should be a boss enemy. - Digisphere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Cool, but it doesn't have any extras compared to the site...
- jessebs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Neat idea, but I would never use it
2d is much more efficient and easier to check out what stories there are. - thepolkapunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2There is a fine line between a cool looking interface and an impossible to use interface. This smashes through that line into impossible to use without any regard for the consequences.
- someotherdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's not quite Minority Report just yet but, still, looks pretty sweet! Dug
- Azazriel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, it is cool, but I can't agree with the comments about this being useless.
While I'm definitely not an interface guru, I have spent enough time working with teams on interface design to become very interested in the way we interact with computers and technology. I continually find myself frustrated by existing interface designs and feel the manipulation of data to be clunky in a strict 2D environment.
Things like this may not serve an immediately obvious usefulness, but how many great inventions do we have today that initially started their lives as someone 'messing around' for the sole purpose of making something 'cool' yet not too terribly useful?
I for one am all for people dabbling in 3D. We exist in a 3D physical world, it just makes sense that the virtual world eventually moves out of the realm of 2D. I’d love to see this, or something like it, influence someone’s thinking on how we interact with all these wonderful toys we’re all getting so used to carrying around. - bless1d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pretty cool.. but i think the rotation isn't intuitive.. when you scroll to the side I would have thought a more intuitive method would be to rotate about the center of the grid, and not the camera location.
- patm1987, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3this could be awesome if merged with diggswarm
- diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...and some shrooms...
- PaulOwen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Some explanation would be good - how are articles split in the fore/background.
Technically that's good though - in the future all moderation sites should be intuitive like this. - Figs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The controls suck. you should be allowed to use the keyboard to move completely, and the mouse to click links.
What else could shift possibly be for! - budman2000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2My head spins after 45 seconds.
My head hurts after a couple of minutes.
No thanks. - mrash506, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0swear i've seen this about 5 months ago...
