7 Good Movies With the Most Annoying Cult Followings
flixster.com — Naturally some films develop a cult following. But the following films fan base has seemed to wear itself thin. Here are the top five films where the audience has started to bury their respected favorites.
- 1620 diggs
- digg it
- Powerfan5000, on 09/18/2008, -121/+278Napoleon Dynamite was not a good movie. Sorry.
- SuperWinner, on 09/18/2008, -23/+202Napoleon Dynamite summed up the high school experience perfectly without glorifying it and filling it up with perfect sex, perfect athletes and perfect people all dancinging in perfect synchonization and having the most perfect never ending party. I hate movies like that and there are plenty of them.
ND was different, not great, just different and thats the best thing about it.- MrM4nager, on 09/19/2008, -8/+50I don't know what your high school was like.....but mine was not like that.
- evilesttoast, on 09/19/2008, -4/+29Wow, high school wasnt like ND at all for me...
- whyisntcakesin, on 09/19/2008, -23/+3for someone with the name super winner... you certainly seem to have gotten the raw end of the highschool experience. honestly, in high school I got to hang out with friends constantly, enjoy my spare time, had summers off to go to the beach daily. It's like retirement except you have to go to class and you dont need viagra
- Kohaxx, on 09/19/2008, -2/+36Experiences may vary, but I could definitely see some of my high school experiences in ND. The frustration, the lack of money for decent clothes, etc.
It was refreshing at the time because every high school movie glorifies the experience for all those who loved high school and failed at life afterwards, as opposed to those who had a miserable time in high school and had much better things to look forward to.
Then it got quoted to death... - whyisntcakesin, on 09/19/2008, -4/+9"It was refreshing at the time because every high school movie glorifies the experience for all those who loved high school and failed at life afterwards, as opposed to those who had a miserable time in high school and had much better things to look forward to."
So it was refreshing because it focused on the possibly inbred child and his lame friends? What exactly did Napoleon have to look forward to? - dafragsta, on 09/19/2008, -2/+5I think you were thinking of Dazed and Confused.
- jtbell04, on 09/19/2008, -1/+12There's sex in highschool? This is news to me...
- kernel610, on 09/19/2008, -16/+4GOSH!! Stupid idiot!
- moo113, on 09/19/2008, -21/+44Don't apologize, it was terrible.
- elfprince13, on 09/19/2008, -10/+32I'll think whatever I want about it. GOSH.
- jawagas, on 09/19/2008, -14/+3BARRFFFF!!!! lite cough!
Sorry, ya that movie can suck a *****' rank-ass rotten zombie's nard sac - 5car, on 09/19/2008, -14/+8Napoleon Dynamite was a good movie. When you first saw it, you liked it.
You thought, "Perhaps the image of this person I saw on the screen shares and also represents a deeper connection to humanity than I have."
Now every one has been through that looking glass.
and you suck- fhornplayer, on 09/19/2008, -0/+12I hated it when I first saw it. I thought "This is dumb".
- 5car, on 09/19/2008, -2/+2touché
- cactusjack901, on 09/19/2008, -1/+0I hated it when I first saw it. I thought "DAAAH OH GOD MY BRAIN! MAKE IT STOP! MAKE IT STOP! MAKE IT STOP!"
and that's why I am failing out of school
- airwalke, on 09/19/2008, -4/+15The problem with Napoleon Dynamite is that it became a victim of its own hype. I first saw it because of the trailer, and thought it was great. Then the word started to spread about how funny it was, everyone was quoting it, and everyone else went in expecting this knee-slap comedy romp that would leave them howling.
It was funny, but subtly so. There are those who liked it, and there are those who didn't, get the ***** over it.- mrevaaaaa, on 09/19/2008, -1/+1It definitely was one of those movies that was great in most movie fanatics eyes after their first viewing but the public and the majority of dumb ***** people just ruined it for the people who actually give a *****.
Like me.
*****. - warplayer, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Exactly! I tell people this all the time and they just don't get it. I saw Napolean Dynamite in it's original limited theater run (it was only playing in one theater in all of Orange County, which says a lot for it's indie status) because I was told that the intention of the film makers was to make a live action, awkward cartoon in the vein of adult swim. What I saw on screen was exactly that, albeit a bit subtlety. The hype machine came through, the movie got a wide release, and the hype skewed it to be a completely different movie than what was in theaters.
- mrevaaaaa, on 09/19/2008, -1/+1It definitely was one of those movies that was great in most movie fanatics eyes after their first viewing but the public and the majority of dumb ***** people just ruined it for the people who actually give a *****.
- gquaglia, on 09/19/2008, -1/+8The poster labeled it as "good" while the original story had them as appropriately "lame".
- hunkster2010, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Fight Club was not lame!
- m0zzie, on 09/19/2008, -4/+6***** idiot people just need to ***** stop wearing ***** "Vote for Pedro" shirts. *****.
ps. yeeaarrrgh - flossdaily, on 09/19/2008, -9/+7Napoleon Dynamite wasn't good. It was great.
- tykwondingo, on 09/19/2008, -3/+2Should have been called six great movies and one piece of ***** (Napoleon) with lame cult followings.
- ottos13, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1if you have no expectations it is really funny, its one of those think about later kind of funny movies/shows.
- r3negadeX, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2But Fight Club, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, A Clockwork Orange, and Scarface were. Buried as really ***** lame.
- PrinceMissile, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2It was completely unknown around my area. I saw the previews for it, thought it looked really good and funny, and went to see it the day it came out. My friends and I were the only ones in the theater (it was only playing at one of those artsy theaters). We really liked it, but the movie remained unknown by everyone we knew. Then, much later, EVERYONE started to see it, and started quoting it relentlessly, and needless to say, it completely ruined it for us. Many movies suffer this same fate. It sucks. Even bad movies suffer the same fate. Example: people yelling "This. Is. Sparta!"
- Chewie67, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1I was going to say the same thing.
Very speculative choice of "good" movies. - daridave, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Digg for Pedro!
- dbalaski, on 09/18/2008, -1/+70A little mis-information about CLockwork Orange:
From the Wikipedia Article:
At the time, it was widely believed that the copycat attacks were what led Kubrick to withdraw the film from distribution in the United Kingdom. However, in a television documentary made after Kubrick's death, his widow Christiane confirmed rumours that Kubrick had withdrawn A Clockwork Orange on police advice after threats were made against Kubrick and his family (the source of the threats was not discussed). That Warner Bros. acceded to Kubrick's request to withdraw the film is an indication of the remarkable relationship Kubrick had with the studio, particularly the executive Terry Semel. - SeventhSon, on 09/18/2008, -13/+61You have no idea how irritation Napoleon Dynamite was. I live a few miles away from Preston, Idaho (where the film was set). It made high school much, much worse than I ever thought possible. Guess what everyone running for class president did...
- Wargalas, on 09/19/2008, -0/+61Come on! Tell us! The suspense is killing me! :)
- cride11, on 09/19/2008, -1/+19irritation or irritating?
- algaeturd, on 09/19/2008, -1/+25group masturbation? Gather eggs at hatcheries? Draw really bad images of animals mixed and matched?
- FaTPonY, on 09/19/2008, -0/+8there was group masturbation in napoleon dynamite?
- murrdpirate, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3We demand to know!
- phirestyle, on 09/19/2008, -9/+3Vote for pedro t-shirts, ***** duh. Idiots.
- aaabatteries, on 09/19/2008, -1/+11No, of course not!
That's ridiculous!
- aaabatteries, on 09/19/2008, -1/+11No, of course not!
- foofightrs777, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2skitchin on the back of a bike?
- TremorX, on 09/19/2008, -1/+5Well, did they cum!?!
- reaganluver, on 09/19/2008, -0/+7Jesus Christ!!! some things you just don't talk about in public!!
- mrevaaaaa, on 09/19/2008, -0/+9Woah man, I feel for you.
Cut this guy some slack people, he lives in Idaho. - TheProfessor87, on 09/19/2008, -0/+0Was it the Canned Heat dance?
- dumpstermuffin, on 09/18/2008, -23/+17i feel validate with donnie darko. i can't tell if the movie is more irritatingly self-indulgent or its adolescent following.
and is it presumptive to add Into the Wild? talk about self-indulgent from Emperor Penn himself. if i want to celebrate an maladjusted egotist, i'll watch Gonzo, thank you.
if anyone cites the big lebowski, i'm burning this place to the ground.- TheBuzzKiller, on 09/19/2008, -0/+7all 3 of those are great movies
- brycelb, on 09/19/2008, -0/+11You're out of your element dumpster.
- gratefuldutch, on 09/19/2008, -9/+3somebody skipped grammar school and picked up a thesaurus. i mean, are people illiterate?
who the ***** digged you?- matthewkg, on 09/19/2008, -2/+4dugg*
- LemonChicken, on 09/19/2008, -1/+2I think he was being ironic.
- tykwondingo, on 09/19/2008, -2/+1I have no idea but I definitely buried you.
- gratefuldutch, on 09/19/2008, -1/+0I wasn't trying to be ironic, as much as I'd like to say that. I just failed by my own standard. Oops.
- mikelist, on 09/19/2008, -1/+2"he said, the sheriff is near", "awww, mongo straight", and "affairs of state take precedence over affairs of state"
well, i guess that mel brooks fans aren't a cult, merely a group of people who recognize true genius. - philberttheduck, on 09/19/2008, -1/+5you're a ***** moron.
- JeffH, on 09/19/2008, -1/+3I think that point was stupid as hell. He tries to act like a badass for having a "higher" movie taste, and that movies that "shoot to the top" of all time favorite lists are bad.
He then cites The Godfather. The most stereotypical answer to a "Best Film" question. I wonder if he would think it was such a good movie had he watched it before reviews were ever made, or before it was the top of the IMDb.
I like how he openly admits that The Nightmare Before Christmas was ruined for him ENTIRELY because of the way it caught on and was subsequently marketed. Jackass.
- bixby1, on 09/18/2008, -23/+14I walked out on the nightmare before christmas...
- doiveo, on 09/18/2008, -27/+14Star Trek
- solid12345, on 09/19/2008, -1/+16The nerds are savagely digging you down in their captain's chair armrest keyboard.
- doiveo, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4I know! I was expecting some blow back. Frankly I'm surprised they aren't creating new accounts just to Digg me down twice.
- solid12345, on 09/19/2008, -1/+16The nerds are savagely digging you down in their captain's chair armrest keyboard.
- doiveo, on 09/18/2008, -3/+257 Good Movies With...
... here are the top five films where ...
Dropped two by the time the description was entered.- azAZ09, on 09/18/2008, -4/+5Could have dropped again. Only the last four were worth watching, but any list of bad movies with cult followings should include rocky horror picture show, and Heavy Metal.
- SkinnyPuppy, on 09/19/2008, -0/+19And to top it all of the title on the webpage reads: "7 Lamest Movies With Cult Followings"
So is it "7 Good Movies..." or "...the top five films" or "...7 Lamest Movies"?
I'm soooooo confused.
- sillygato, on 09/18/2008, -4/+92Why isn't Superbad on this list? Every 12 year old boy on the internet seems to have some variation of McLovin' as his internet username.
- triferlinks, on 09/19/2008, -1/+28by the time they turn 14 itll have been forgotten cuz apatow's made 20 movies since then.
- whahaa, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1he won't stop if we keep enabling him.
- elnerdo, on 09/19/2008, -15/+9Because superbad's not a good movie?
- brycelb, on 09/19/2008, -3/+1Neither were half on the list.
- philberttheduck, on 09/19/2008, -2/+2your youth must have sucked.
- flossdaily, on 09/19/2008, -2/+2it must be sad to have no soul.
- mcwattersm, on 09/19/2008, -4/+0You must have gay.
- tocsy, on 09/19/2008, -0/+0YOU SHUT YOUR WHORE MOUTH!
OK, I never actually saw Superbad, so I have no idea if it was good or not. I just wanted in on the hating.
- jtbell04, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4I'm at least glad The Rocky Horror Picture Show isn't on the list. Yeah, it's followers are a bunch of slavering sexual deviants, but at least they keep to themselves.
- triferlinks, on 09/19/2008, -1/+28by the time they turn 14 itll have been forgotten cuz apatow's made 20 movies since then.
- DrCrankenstein, on 09/18/2008, -3/+111The title should be "lamest cult followings," not the lamest movies. Several of the movies (Clockwork, Christmas...) are not lame on their own. They're brilliant movies. It's the people who walk around quoting Napoleon Dynamite, thinking Donnie Darko blew up their world and makes them an hip/eccentric film critic, or the asshats who started public fight clubs that suck.
- Ajajadude, on 09/19/2008, -0/+9Yeah, I didn't think most of those movies were lame. The "cult" followings for some of those are, however, pretty lame. Although, I never realized A Nightmare Before Christmas had a cult following.
- drunkirish, on 09/19/2008, -1/+14Haven't you ever been inside a Hot Topic?
- Ajajadude, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5Once...about 12 years ago.
- PoonGnarfler, on 09/19/2008, -2/+19I've always had an affinity for Scarface fans, because many of them are so goddamn stupid. Especially all of the rap stars that flout how badass it is. Do they realize Tony dies in the end? And that the entire movie is basically an allegory of money not making happiness?
- whahaa, on 09/19/2008, -2/+11affinity, noun
1. A natural attraction, liking, or feeling of kinship.
is that what you meant? cuz the rest of your comment seems to suggest the opposite... - netant, on 09/19/2008, -1/+4No, I find the "retarded" fans fo Fight Club much more stupid. The blurb nicely summed it up.
1) Fight Club is not about fistfighting or about "being manly"
2) What's the first rule of Fight Club?
The people I know who appreciate Scarface totally understand the allegory. If it wasn't for the allegory, the movie would merely be a violent, stupid gangster movie. (The movie is pure art...) I'm not stupid enough to pay attention to rappers, so I have no idea if they love the movie without understanding the point. Then again, it doesn't stop some people from liking the song "I Fought the Law" (and I am one of them).
@whahaa I took it to mean he enjoyed laughing at the "stupid" Scarface fans. Agreed, there are much better ways of phrasing it, such as "Idiot Scarface fans so entertaining..." - OneLess, on 09/19/2008, -1/+7How many rap stars do you think know what the word "allegory" means?
- PoonGnarfler, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1@whahaa
yeah, I did mean affinity, it's kind of one of those "awww, look at those cute little dumb people, trying to act cool"
- whahaa, on 09/19/2008, -2/+11affinity, noun
- Kohaxx, on 09/19/2008, -6/+4Generally cult followings for any popular movie are lame. That's like saying Batman TDK has a "cult following", no it's just a good movie dumbass.
No one starts conversations like:
"You know what you would really like that I bet you haven't seen?"
"What?"
"Batman: The Dark Knight"
"Oh, I've never heard of that one, that sounds cool."
"Yeah it's totally underappreciated."
NO.- laggemawrf, on 09/19/2008, -2/+7"Batman TDK"
"BATMAN" TDK
Really? REALLY? - Treshnell, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5I agree with the sentiment, Kohaxx, but some cult films become popular later, due to the cult following. So yeah, it's those movies that really no one has heard of or likes, for whatever reason, but still maintain a base of fiercely loyal fans. At least, that's what I'd consider a real cult following.
It seems that what the author hates more than the actual cult following of those movies, is the clichés that arise from the popularity of those movies. - dafragsta, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2You want a kickass little known movie with a cult following, check out Dead Man with Johnny Depp. That is a pretty cool movie.
- iiDLii, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Jim Jarmusch + Jonny Depp and the poetry of William Blake = win
- laggemawrf, on 09/19/2008, -2/+7"Batman TDK"
- nonchalantmoon, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2this comment is dugg simply for using 'asshats'.
- ChrisshEnzo, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1The article is called Lames Movies but on Digg it is Good Moovies
- Ajajadude, on 09/19/2008, -0/+9Yeah, I didn't think most of those movies were lame. The "cult" followings for some of those are, however, pretty lame. Although, I never realized A Nightmare Before Christmas had a cult following.
- revicon, on 09/18/2008, -4/+82ummm... rocky horror anyone????
- displacednomad, on 09/19/2008, -2/+9Let's do the time warp again!
- MrM4nager, on 09/19/2008, -13/+9It's not a lame movie
- MrM4nager, on 09/19/2008, -3/+4Come on people, Tim Curry is God!
- klitzbtc, on 09/19/2008, -0/+7If it wasn't for the cult following of Rocky Horror it wouldn't be what it is today. Even though I refuse to go see it on Broadway or even in a movie theater, damn cult followers.
- BigDHimself, on 09/19/2008, -2/+6if anything the fan base made the movie... a good portion of the reason people went to see that movie was the circus that watching it was... between the costumes and weird ***** with perfect timing. In that case the movie blew, but the fans at least knew how to enjoy it.
- microchp, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5I was feeling done in... couldn't win...
- brycelb, on 09/19/2008, -1/+2I think most of the kids here have no idea how ridiculous that whole situation was. It's been awhile as far as I can tell. Anything that involves people dressing up in costumes and then breaking out in song and dance in the middle of the movie isle is a touch much for me. It's not even a good movie?
- pyry, on 09/19/2008, -1/+2It's not about it being a *good* movie so much as the whole experience and shenanigans involved in making fun of it's imperfections.
- triont, on 09/19/2008, -1/+1It's an addicting movie.
- Synova, on 09/19/2008, -1/+22They should have stopped with just Napoleon Dynamite.
- SpeedStix, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2They should of showed the scene where the uncle throws a steak and Napoleon.. that was the best part of the movie.
- triferlinks, on 09/19/2008, -4/+5dugg for jaybol renaming the title
- triferlinks, on 09/19/2008, -22/+20if the writer is gonna go with lamest movies with cult following. he should have put
The Boondock Saints- Skab, on 09/19/2008, -4/+6HERE HERE!! Also that damned Juno what a piece of ***** movie GO see the original called Citizen Ruth and its not a happy ending. Also fight club should not be on that list. IF anything people who like fight club and never read any of the other books are more annoying.
- Jibberwalk, on 09/19/2008, -11/+5Chuck Palahniuk's. Books are almost. Unreadable because of. The completely aggravat. Ing prose he chooses. To scribe his. Tale. With.
- RobotBuddha, on 09/19/2008, -1/+11Juno, a million times over. Girls have actually said it was their main reason for going ahead with an unwanted pregnancy. That's mindblowing fangirlism far beyond even the monty python quoting people.
- tdogg241, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1What other books? Fight Club was only one novel and why should I have to read any of Palahniuk's other novels to understand the greatness that is Fight Club? For that matter, why should I have to read Fight Club to enjoy the film???
I hate this mentality that books are automatically better than the films they inspire. I'm sure the LOTR books are great and possibly superior to the films, but I'll probably never get around to reading them. That's not going to stop me from enjoying the films though.
For the record, I *did* actually read Fight Club and that book was a ***** mess. David Fincher deserves a medal for the film he created from it.
- Parallacks, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2Yessss. ***** religious message and it's not funny. :(
- stancar200, on 09/19/2008, -1/+1Awesome movie, crazy cult. *sniff sniff* smells like what happened to Dark Knight
- Twag86, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2I know what you mean. its almost like Warner Bros. was promoting a different movie with TDK. It was all kids toys and candy tie-ins. Not to mention all the Heath Ledger(RIP) stuff with his face plastered on t-shirts and crap at hot topic. Then the movie comes out and its an adult, challenging, and dark piece of art. It was ridiculous to see little kids in the theater where a essentially a terrorist blows up buildings and kills copious amounts of people.
- Twag86, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2I know what you mean. its almost like Warner Bros. was promoting a different movie with TDK. It was all kids toys and candy tie-ins. - phreenet, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2Can't have a ***** cult fan base without mentioning The Boondock Saints, I liked the movie... Hate the scene.
- Skab, on 09/19/2008, -4/+6HERE HERE!! Also that damned Juno what a piece of ***** movie GO see the original called Citizen Ruth and its not a happy ending. Also fight club should not be on that list. IF anything people who like fight club and never read any of the other books are more annoying.
- XenoSNK, on 09/19/2008, -29/+3I just watched Fight Club for the first time today and felt like it was really *****. Like, wasn't the point that all of what he had done was really just a bad idea, including Fight Club itself? Then why is it such a good thing?
Maybe I missed something.
Regardless, it's just like that with Green Street Hooligans. Kids here go nuts for that *****.- drgmdp, on 09/19/2008, -1/+1fight club is a movie for edwards nortons who really believe they are brads pitts
- bagboyrebel, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3"Maybe I missed something."
stop describing how I feel about your post!
- MrM4nager, on 09/19/2008, -3/+91The digg title: 7 Good movies with the most annoying cult followings
Title of the article: 7 Lamest movies with cult followings
Anyone see the error here? Especially since all of the movies on this list are amazing except for one.- doiveo, on 09/19/2008, -0/+24Perhaps the Digger has more sense than the author.
woah! I just blew my own mind. - burntice, on 09/19/2008, -0/+8I'm afraid I just blue myself
- MrM4nager, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5Here's what you do. You go buy yourself a tape recorder.
- doiveo, on 09/19/2008, -0/+24Perhaps the Digger has more sense than the author.
- lostprophet2159, on 09/19/2008, -2/+19This gets first place on my forthcoming 7 lamest 7 lamest lists - all of these movies are better than you, blogger
- 6madhatter9, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2Exactly
- Purplez, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1^5
- tripledjr, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Agreed,
Ironic if you think about it, not commenting on the quality but just the cultness of its fans, I'd figured Godfather would of been #1 instead he defends it.
Biased list. - BigPapi, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2Blogger sounds like one of those hipster pricks who goes to restaurants and takes pictures of his food just to be cool, artsy and different. ***** you, most of these movies are awesome.
- vashth3stampede, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Also, the link was 7-lamest-movies-with-cult-followings
i think that the submitter missed the point...or just disagreed and thought that the moves were good.
either way, the write of the article didnt like movies because of the fans of the movies. sounds like he's judging a cover based on it's book to me
- ProKid, on 09/19/2008, -17/+8Hello?!?!?! Star Wars?
- digsuxx, on 09/19/2008, -5/+4agree!
- HayString, on 09/19/2008, -16/+8Where's Star Wars?

- Skab, on 09/19/2008, -8/+2Next up on the list of lame, lamest fan bases for bands. I'll start the thread.
1. Nine Inch Nails. I love the band since I was a teen but was turned off when i finally seen them in 2001 and thought to myself.....hmmmm i guess im sopose to wear high heals and glitter wtf?!- nonchalantmoon, on 09/19/2008, -1/+2wtf does this have ANYTHING to do with MOVIES?! if you want to just bitch for the sake of it, therapists have hourly rates.
or hookers. they charge by the half hour. - netant, on 09/19/2008, -1/+2Bands, from NIN to Smashing Pumpkins, are like exquisite Junior's cheesecakes. They are awesome when they come off the oven. But you're not going to eat a 10 year old, moldy, rotten cheesecake, so why keep worshipping a rock band that has passed its discard date?
Furthermore, what does that say about oneself as a music fan? I think Led Zep produced an awesome body of work. I can wax paeans to it. But I don't really listen to it today; it doesn't speak to the me of today. I'm not a teenaged kid who gets expiation of frustration and energy from their music. I recognise its brilliance, but it doesn't speak to me anymore. I'm not that kid. Worshipping a band of a previous era really just says you're a defective person who hasn't evolved or grown in 10-20 years.
Lesson for today: enjoy a cheesecake made today. Look for them, the way some people pursue fine wines. Don't keep trying to eat 20 year old cheesecakes.
(On the flip side, don't pass on a band because they were "relevant" 20 years ago. What they were producing at the time may be relevant to where you are today. Joe Jackson and Lou Reed come to mind.)- SuperCujo, on 09/19/2008, -1/+1You were going so well until this:
"Lesson for today: enjoy a cheesecake made today. Look for them, the way some people pursue fine wines. Don't keep trying to eat 20 year old cheesecakes."
Fine wines have generally aged for quite a number of years, which goes totally against your point. - netant, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1@SuperCujo
Actually, GOOD consumable wines today don't need THAT much aging to be drinkable. "Aged" wines are pursued more for the snob aspect, and that the quality of the taste is more dependent upon the environmental conditions at the year the wine was bottled. In other words, a wine from 1983 may be considered a good wine because 1983 was a good year for flavorful wine, not because the 1983 bottle is older than 1992. One will prefer younger wines if the year it was made is "known" to be better than an older one. The older the wine, the more likely you'll end up opening a bottle of vinegar. (But don't take my word for it, I don't even drink wine...)
But you're right, flawed analogy on my part. It doesn't change my point about cheesecakes and rock bands.

- netant, on 09/19/2008, -1/+4No.
Donnie Darko was AWESOME science fiction. It took a concept about "time travel" and the story revolved around the CONCEPT, not the f**king characters.
There's no car chases, and yes, its confusing. But its for people who love reading REAL science fiction, and not the serialized Star Trek novels crap, which reads like "Wagontrain to the Stars". Did I get real feelings of enjoyment from watching it? Not really, not like I did with "the Matrix". But I can see how it has "quality". Kind of how one can enjoy reading "Childhood's End", even though its not really character driven. (I tound the movie "Contact" even less entertaining. But I didn't read the book, and not sure if the fault lies in the movie rendition, or the book.)
I don't hang out with dorks, so I have no idea how annoying DD fans can be. But I bet a lot of them are into physics/time travel and "get" the movie. And they're usually the kind of people who don't have great fashion sense. And they probably think you're just another unit model of the retarded masses.

- Slayerdude51982, on 09/19/2008, -2/+6Napoleon Dynamite should be the ONLY one on this list. I don't know HOW Donnie Darko has an annoying Cult Following...actually 6-1 I don't know how they have annoying cult followings. Napoleon is the only that is a lame ass movie, that people decide to quote ALL THE TIME. The movie sucks!!!
- infernal6, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Donnie Darko does have a cult following, and I'll admit I am a former member. I still love the movie too. I tell people that it will blow their minds, then they watch it with that in mind and it ruins it a bit. First time I saw it I had no conception of what it was about, and it did blow my mind. Now I just shut up so I don't jack up people's expectations about it.
- netant, on 09/19/2008, -1/+1Donnie Darko suffers from the fact is not a movie for the general audiences. The majority of people are actually too stupid to grasp the movie. (As for myself, I didn't even really get it the first time I watched it. I had to hit websites and then watch it over before I realized just how good it was.)
You should never tell people DD will blow their minds, because most people you tell that will most likely not even be mentally capable of appreciating the movie. Its like tell people you got to read "Henry V" or "Richard III". Some people never enjoy Shakespeare.
I never was part of the DD worship cult. But I do like quality science fiction, and recognise it for the most part.

- damian7, on 09/19/2008, -1/+47Most people completely missed the point of Fight Club
Douche: Man, Fight Club is the best movie ever
Me: Yeah, totally!
Douche 2: Agreed, best action movie ever
Me: * ugh *
A lot of people completely missed a lot of the themes in the movie, and I'm not just talking about its views on the media and yuppyism. There were some deep themes about fatherhood, parenting and relationships which many people didn't recognize.- dafragsta, on 09/19/2008, -0/+13They're like the scratch on the roof of your mouth that would heal if only you could stop tonging it.
- rnelsonee, on 09/19/2008, -1/+12Exactly. The consumerism was more like a setting (and the fight clubs a small plot device) -- the story was about relationships. At it's heart it was a story about Jack and Marla. It doesn't take a film student to see this (I'm certainly not one) - the main character tells you this in the very beginning of the movie!
"I realize that all of this, the gun, the bombs, the revolution, all have to do with a girl named Marla Singer..." [main movie begins].
I mean, I love the rest of it as well - it's probably my favorite movie, even with it's fun jokes and super-violence. But don't deny that Marla is a real character, not some extra female on screen. The book obviously focused more on her as well.
so, yeah, that's all. I've said all this only once before on the internet -- on digg -- and it got modded down. Oh well.- netant, on 09/19/2008, -1/+2You're so wrong. Its the anti-consumerism (or the criticism of today's society using anti-consumerism as its motif) that is central to the movie. The relationship is used to juxtapose the narrator and reality. The relationship is important to the movie, in terms of its mechanical significance, but its not an important central theme. This movie is not Casablanca.
- durmer, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1I've always thought it was always a dark comedy. There are so many instances when I just laugh out loud. Also, probably the only movie I thought was better than the book it was based on.
- RoboCafaz, on 09/19/2008, -7/+5Can we throw Superbad and Pineapple Express on there, too?
- tdogg241, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1No. Both are still too new to know whether or not they actually have "cult" followings. Right now, they just have fans. Even Napoleon Dynamite is almost 5 years old.
- RoboCafaz, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1Alright, I'll wait. I dunno about you guys, but I'm tired of hearing McLovin jokes and I'm tired of hearing that terrible "*Cha-Ching* and take yo' money" song.
- tdogg241, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1No. Both are still too new to know whether or not they actually have "cult" followings. Right now, they just have fans. Even Napoleon Dynamite is almost 5 years old.
- morningmatters, on 09/19/2008, -2/+24I don't get the anti-cult following people. If these movies remained obscure then the so called critics would claim to love it, but once the words start to spread and the movie becomes popular the same people would bash it. Who cares if other people like/hate the movie which you like? A good movie deserve to be watched and enjoyed by everyone.
The same goes for music too. It's lame when people say crap like, "I used to like that group but now I hate it because so many other people think their music is cool".- ExSlashdotter, on 09/19/2008, -1/+1To be fair, there are a lot of bands that I hated before it was cool to hate them.
- Jackson0909, on 09/19/2008, -3/+3"cult people" ruin films. They over-quote lines in movies. Generally, they are also the types of people that most don't wish to align themselves with.
For me, it isn't about the popularity, it's about being bombarded with it day in and day out. - netant, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1You have to hang around the representative sample of annoying fans. People who take humor, and then proceed to give it the accolades it does not deserve. ("Humor? Why, I barely know her...) People who apparently don't get it.
As for music, it has more to do with the fact that people subconsciously like to use music or cultural tastes to define oneself AMONG A SOCIAL GROUP. You like the music, but you hate being lumped in with the dorks (or having to come into contact with them). It shouldn't affect your ability to appreciate the "work". What it really says is that you're a shallow person who needs other people to define oneself.
- SEANWOOKIE, on 09/19/2008, -1/+7The teacher of the class I'm in now quotes Monty Python quite often.
- dacrosby, on 09/19/2008, -5/+9No Rocky Horror Picture Show? Move out of your parent's basement and take off that makeup and lingerie already. You look horrid.
- Deevo55, on 09/19/2008, -1/+0Why is everyone hating on Rocky horror? If you ever go to a showing of it you would understand perfectly why it is so great. The movie by itself is nothing special, it's the environment of the midnight theatre that has made it what it is.
- klitzbtc, on 09/19/2008, -6/+17This list ***** blows, great movies, who cares what the fans have "done" to it.
I like talking about the ideas expressed in Donnie Darko, Clockwork Orange (2001, for the mention).
Fight Club might as well be my Bible (not because the fighting).
The Nightmare before christmas is an epic classic that I could watch 100 times a year.
And I love nothing more than to find another Monty Python addict at a party or bar whom I can spend the entire time with quoting movie lines that make me crack up and while everyone else just shakes their head.- brycelb, on 09/19/2008, -5/+8You think the list blows cause your that guy the list is about. You qualify for almost all of them.
- coheedcollapse, on 09/19/2008, -5/+6You're one of those people who likes a band and suddenly hates it because it gets popular, aren't you?
- klitzbtc, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4yeah I definitely don't think the list is about me (not that I care), I just can't see how some pretentious nerd can take the iconification (yes, I just made that word up) of movies and turn it into another tool he uses to resent the people around him.
- kingatrock, on 09/19/2008, -2/+6Agreed, this guy is just annoyed with people in general, he even admits hes an indoors nerd, probably anti-social waiting for the next big plague so he can laugh from his mountain top.
- Jackson0909, on 09/19/2008, -1/+4Buddy, do you really not get the idea of this list? The guy admits that he likes these movies, but people like you ruin them. The constant quoting and discussion by pseudo-intellectuals as become extremely annoying; Almost to the point where you have ruined the film from ever being viewed again.
- klitzbtc, on 09/19/2008, -1/+4No, I guess I don't get the idea. People over-quote every good movie ever made, and most shows, is that any reason to not like them, no. It's just some ***** excuse for people like the author of this article to isolate himself more from society and inflate his ego.

You're a ***** moron.- SubjectiveC, on 09/19/2008, -5/+1I never said it glorified drugs. I assume most people who "connect" with the film have had their brush with addiction. I hate those people; they believe just because they were addicts at some point in their lives or are strangely attracted to the deprecating lifestyle they can declare one movie to be the best of all time.
- santaliqueur, on 09/19/2008, -1/+2I'm not addicted to anything, apart from calling out people who use idiotic blanket statements without reason. I love the movie and I'm addiction free. Sometimes people like a film for no reason. Stop whining about it.
