Awesome!! Val Kilmer to star in "Real Genius 2"
movienews.virgin.net — The original movie inspired a lot of us to become tech geeks. In the original 80s project Kilmer played Chris Knight, one of two brilliant teenagers who head a team of young geniuses developing a laser for what they believe is a class project and later discover that their professor intends to turn their work over to the government as a weapon.

- rodtrent, on 10/12/2007, -45/+6Cool original movie -- a classic. Sad, though, that Kilmer has to stoop to participate in this.
- diggik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Just because it is a sequel, or do you have some inside information about the continued story?
- gmerin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6a buck is a buck; when you have a mortgage to pay and you're no longer the fair-haired stud on the studio, intangibles like integrity can be suspended.
- RevMark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kilmer played a supporting role in Deja Vu with Denzel Washington and did a vewry good job. But man did he gain some weight.
- catmistake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7If you'd just glance at Val Kilmer's career, you'll see that he never takes a roll because he's after the money. In fact, even though he is a famous actor and can demand more, just by the very roles he takes in independent films with small budgets, its obvious that his payment must be miniscule. He seems to take roles that he finds interesting or important, and not because the film is a guaranteed hit. I'd say, he's not even doing the sequel because its a sequel... there must be something about the role or the movie itself that is motivating him. And not all sequals suck (ahem, Aliens)
- royalwcheese, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang proves Val Kilmer still has it in him.

- Dested, on 10/12/2007, -0/+53lol How the hell are you going to create a sequel to a movie that ends in a house overflowing with popcorn?

- kutsal, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1The popcorns are part of another government experiment disguised and they run amok and Chris Knight is brought in to help figure out a way to collect them all.
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Uncle Rico will be appearing in part Deux I hope.
- francphysic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I think the way that makes the most sense is if the Val Kilmer character is a professor at that school teaching the next generation how to party.
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1are you pi?
- yourmomsbox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Val Looks like he ate all that popcorn.
- portwojc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No Mentos and diet coke taken to a whole new level! Like a party by the pool and a swimming pool boiling over.
Either that or something new with dry ice. Wasn't that used to make quarters?
- RuffRidr, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Ugh, sequels run amok.
- ToddML, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25BEST. MOVIE. EVER.
- coit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I prefer "Top Secret" when it comes to Val Kilmer funny... But I loved Real Genius as well!

- twooranges, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19The original is often over looked as a great tech/geek movie. i hope they do a good job on the sequel
- cybermort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5awesome and now that Val has excess fat around the belly area he will be able to play the role of geek even better !
- SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Val was looking pretty gruesome in Deja Vu. But yeah, sequel mania run amok.
- jflint, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Holywood must be out of ideas.
Maybe Kilmer lives in the closet now, rather than Laslo.
/Great Movie- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35little known fact:
the guy that played laslo in real genius, played uncle rico in napoleon dynamite. - pfunked, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7huh. Had to look it up before I believed it: http://imdb.com/name/nm0340973/

*hugs IMDB* - oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i watched napoleon when it came out on dvd and about 2 weeks later netflixed genius. for literally half of the movie i was .. wtf have i see this guy? it finally clicked for my wife and she came up with the answer.
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35little known fact:
- LutherMac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I've got a bad feeling about this. The original was definately one of the best geek movies of the 80s... I just can't imagine a good sequel coming out of this...
- PhillyMJS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Evil Hollywood bastards!
Clearly this is their final plot to stop piracy.... no new original movies, just crappy movie versions of beloved TV shows, lame and unnecessary remakes, and equally pointless and bad sequels that will sully the good movies that preceeded them.
I was happy to hear that the Revenge of the Nerds remake was axed so the original's legacy (well, what's left of it after the parade of less-than-stellar sequels) will remain intact, but that happiness has been washed away now that I have learned sequels to WarGames and Real Genius, two of my most favorite movies, are being produced. IMHO, the fact that Hollywood is now mining successful movies from 20 years ago for material does not portend well for the future.
~Philly- OverThere, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6digg down.. wrong reply.
- PopcornDave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ah yes, but just wait until Johnny Depp stars in the remake of that wonderful old TV show My Mother the Car. THEN we know it's all over.
- diggenerate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2please don't sign your posts
- brbubba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Nooooo way! Real Genius is easily in my top 5 greatest movies of all time. Just hope that they don't royally screw up the sequel.
- OverThere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7They will. It is in their nature to do so.
- minorthr, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0The original was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. This sounds like its going to stink on ice.
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Dr. Meredith: A bit of advice...

Chris Knight: Not right now
Susan: A girl's gotta have her standards
- zugzug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Susan: Can you hammer a 6 inch spike through a board with your penis?
- ascheinberg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Why is everyone so negative about this news? Real Genius was a great movie, one I watched countless times as a kid. Why does everyone ASSUME that RG2 would suck -- just because it's a sequel? Give it a chance.
Maybe it will be good. Sometimes, sequels are as good or even better than the original. Believe it or not, it has happened (cough cough... Empire Strikes Back).- ScornForSega, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Don't you EVER compare some Hollywood money grubbing crap to the original trilogy.
TESB came out 3 years after A New Hope and was a natural progression of a story line. This is a vain attempt to revisit something that was probably a great idea 20 years ago and at this point, nostalgia is their main marketing angle.
(Feel free to throw those words back at me in relation to the new trilogy, I'd probably agree.) - fugeelama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12"Always some white boy gotta invoke the holy trilogy!"
- astx813, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3*cough cough* Army of Darkness *cough cough*
- kevxross, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Ok since the "holy trilogy" is off limits, I submit T2.
- ScornForSega, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'll give ya T2.... provided James Cameron directs Real Genius 2.
Ridley Scott would be ok too. - eng1ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ScornForSega .. The original was directed by Martha Coolidge. Oddly, I think it is the very fact that it was a woman making a comedy film in the 80's that led to how unconventional and 'fresh' the movie was, and still is.
I sort of hope that they don't hand the sequel to Ridley (or his big-budget brother, Tony) Scott, as they mostly do drama films. Much better to give it to a small-budget director like Wes Anderson or maybe even Spike Jonze. Or possibly Martha again.
- ScornForSega, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Don't you EVER compare some Hollywood money grubbing crap to the original trilogy.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Oh another suckquel
There are only very few movies that qualify for sequels, and this isn't one of them. The movie was great to begin
with, and ended on a good note (lots of popcorn). No sequel needed. - bobo7795, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3More Proof his career is in the poopers if this is true.
- ImTheDarkcyde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yet another ***** sequel
and plus, have you seen val lately? he really let himself go - paku, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3How can you be called a genius and not know the laser was going to be used as a weapon?
j/k. Real Genius rocks! ..although Val Kilmer is a bit old isn't he? Will he be living in the boiler room? - silverbax, on 10/12/2007, -18/+2I don't get why this is awesome. I like Val Kilmer, but Real Genius was a B rate crapfest.
- fanclerks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Allow me to say this for everyone... blasphemy!
- H3BR3W, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Haha, how is this awesome? I'm a Kilmer fan and all (despite his lisp botches as Bruce Wayne and Jim Morrison), but Real Genius wasn't a very good movie. A sequel just sounds ridiculous. Whatever, though, let those who are excited be so.
- Sidzilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ok, Val Kilmer has always been one of my favorite actors. Real Genius has always been one of my favorite movies. Now if they would just make a sequel to Hackers....
- snurfle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sneakers.
- timxpx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it used to float around file sharing and i don't know if it still does, but theres a movie called 'takedown' that was incorrectly labeled as 'hackers 2 - operation takedown' -- that might be the closest you'd get
- Slungsolow, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1inaccurate. this is a rumor.
- Hush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks for all the info. You know, sources, etc.
- Alphateam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You can order the Real Genius shirts here.
http://www.founditemclothing.com/
I'm in for a "I- Alphateam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I Love Toxic Waste" shirt that is.
- brbubba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sweet. I was just thinking the other day while watching Real Genius, I wonder if you can buy those shirts.
- freff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Auto-buried for "Awesome!!" in title.
- Cojawfee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Auto-dugg down for retard in content.
- Nice2BHere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the story said that Val is doing this to get his acting image improved, meaning that the role he did in a comedy was his best talent. He WAS funny! AH-HAHAHAHAHA!! If the writers can make a decent script, (yes, and probably Val Kilmer lives in the boiler room now, but so what?) it could be great.
- timxpx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3all i need now is an announced sequel to 'top secret'
there's a val kilmer movie i wish more people would have seen. - dknighton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Loved the original, excited about the possibility of a sequel, but surely the writer of the article could have looked up something more recent to connect Kilmer with than "Tombstone". I mean, he is a working, successful actor.
- josegutz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Val "IS" a "Real Genious" For doing this...
- Canthros, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Dear Hollywood:
You know, I lived through the 1980's once, and, while it was not without its charms and niceties, I'm not really in a great rush to do it all over again. - BillDoE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So, is he going to be the old dude hiding in the basement?
Real Genius is one of those movies I see on cable, and even though I've seen it a hundred times. I still sit and watch it again. - AtomicTheory, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2DUGG just for having "Awesome!!" in the title.
- rocjoe71, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"The original movie inspired a lot of us to become tech geeks"
...That's just sad.
I'd still watch the original today, but... ficticious science as an inspiration? Please.- lumbergh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@rocjoe71
Do you realize how many scientists and engineers were inspired by sci-fi works in the past (asimov, bradbury, star trek, etc. ad infinitum)?
"Fictitious science" has ALWAYS been an inspiration to teh geeks! - vikingcoder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes - science fiction, and geek comedy/drama as inspiration for science.
From Jules Verne's tales to Star Trek to current authors like Kim Stanley Robinson & Neal Stephenson, ficticious science has always been an inspiration.
- lumbergh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@rocjoe71
- Eccohawk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My best guess for a sequel plot would likely involve Chris Knight's life being taken over by the serious side of working for a living for so long, perhaps in the private sector, until he gets brought back to the college, perhaps on a teaching gig for summer school or something, and is a real crank for a good quarter of the film, until his friend Mitch, the tried and true party guy due to Chris' teachings, comes back to help out his old friend and get him back into 'party mode'.
- lumbergh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh this is so obvious... I think it would be awesome if Chris Knight became the "new" Laszlo recluse, advising some younger generation on how to rock the house geek-style.
- adammil2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would be funnier to see Chris Knight fast forwarded into the future after college as an aging idealist stuck in the corporate world ala "Office Space":
"Uhhhh yeah, Hi Chris, did you get the memo about those new TPS reports?"
- orlyfactor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The real question is....who will play the part of Laszlo, the reclusive genius who lived in the basement?
- markgl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kilmer is an awesome actor.
- lumbergh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Be sure to check him out in "Heat". Great flick.
- adikt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Is Michelle Meyrink going to be in it? Who would you pick to replace her as the awkward computer geek that made your socks sticky with protein during the scene in her wet suit testing her rebreather?
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"sticky with protein"
lol. I think you're the only one. - beijingdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yah...she was smokin' with that floor sander too.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Funny, I didn't realize that she was older than me. According to IMDB, she hasn't done anything since 1988. Wonder what she is up to today?
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"sticky with protein"
- Titera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can't wait! Kilmer is brilliant.
- themcman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sadly, I never saw the first one.
- blacklilyninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you lose
quick go rent it
make sure its on VHS
- blacklilyninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you lose
- tmcdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Umm, I have little faith that script writers could come up with a compelling story some 21+ years later.. Sorry, I think they took much to long to take a look at this.. Hollywood dragging out the cult classics for a sequel is another lame attempt to make money. The world changed much too much in the past 20 years to make a reliable leap into a sequel. But it will be amusing to see them try...
Rumors of a "Wargames" movie are also rumbling... I guess geek culture will be back (in Hollywood) for 2007/2008?- Modulo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Call me crazy, but, generally speaking, isn't making the first movie usually also a "lame attempt to make money"?
- Modulo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't get me wrong, I loved Real Genius, it was one of my favorite movies for a long time. But seriously, exactly what artistic integrity would be compromised by making a sequel to this?
- Modulo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Call me crazy, but, generally speaking, isn't making the first movie usually also a "lame attempt to make money"?
- linuxunixperl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh God I hope they bring back Kent. Please bring back Kent!
- derekfranklin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They may need to get a new guy to play the geek Mitch (Gabriel Jarret). He grew up to not be so geeky looking:
http://www.imdb.com/gallery/hh/0418909/HH/0418909/iid_895080.jpg.html?path=pgallery&path_key=Jarret,%20Gabriel
It's good to see that he's still working. Saw him in Apollo 13 and the newest Posiden. - aconaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Was it a dream where you see yourself standing in sort of sun-god robes on a pyramid with a thousand naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you?
- saigumi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3god: Hollywood, this is god talking.
Hollywood: Hello, god?
god: If you plan on making this movie, Hollywood, make sure it doesn't suck.
Hollywood: Ok, god. - Shakermaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...and Val Kilmer's career has officially come to an end.
/hope it doesn't suck!! - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with most of you. I sincerely hope this doesn't suck, but I'm almost sure it will. Val should have remembered:
"In the immortal words of Socrates, "I drank what?'" - MonkeyMonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess Hollywood had to make this movie sometime...
...it's a moral imperitive. - kidego365, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If this movie comes to fruition, they better get as many people from the original cast as possible. The original movie is great in so many ways...excellent writing and an awesome cast.
"Kent, wake up Kent!!" - jdillingham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just hope Tears for Fears does the theme song again.
- ronfez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about they get Gary Jules to do the closing song instead?
- veersite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am stoked after hearing this... Just get the original cast back and let them "geek out!"
Hope springs, eternal,
