Batman 3: Johnny Depp as The The Riddler?
hecklerspray.com — That ’s a stone cold fact. You heard it here first. Why are we so sure that Johnny Depp will play The Riddler in Batman 3? Because Johnny Depp recently briefly mumbled something desperately ambiguous about it possibly being quite fun to maybe play The Riddler during a local radio interview with his band. He's got a band??

- rupric, on 09/02/2008, -19/+83The Dark Knight is going to win some serious awards. It's going to be a tough act to follow.
- saqer, on 09/02/2008, -11/+49shut up. You know how many times we've heard that?
- dn11, on 09/02/2008, -27/+13so overrated
- ozziek, on 09/03/2008, -8/+8agreed
- pooljoe, on 09/03/2008, -9/+4Agreed as well...yes it was a good movie, but seriously...if Heath didnt OD you really think the movie would be getting all the hype it is getting? I dont think so
- futebollounge, on 09/03/2008, -6/+1pshh fully deserved an A-. what was overrated about it? it wasn't so much heath that blew my mind, the development of the story and the symbolism blew my mind
- darkwing81, on 09/03/2008, -0/+5after seeing the movie i thought about if i would have still been so impressed without all the hype and the death of Heath. the answer is yes, i would.
- dn11, on 09/03/2008, -1/+2i do think it was a good movie and I do think Heath Ledger was pretty awesome beyond the hype about his death - but the movie as a whole wasn't the masterpiece so many have made it out to be. and it isn't worthy of being one of the highest grossing films of all time IMO. the second half of the summer was just a bit weak for movies though
- GawtMilk, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1Overrated, but overall a fun, enjoyable movie. Will it win awards? Yeah. Of course. It should, but it should win awards in the same way Citizen Kane never won an Oscar.
- Elranzer, on 09/03/2008, -0/+8Don't make me hate the movie.
- BoneheadFarker, on 09/03/2008, -0/+7I'll put money on Depp helping to pull it off. A lot of money...
- phenom2k7, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2I've always admired Depp, he's played a vast amount of uniquely different roles over the years. I have no doubt he'll be an awesome Riddler.
- falser, on 09/03/2008, -1/+5Meh, I would prefer they reboot the series and make it "darker".
- jeremyduffy, on 09/02/2008, -18/+471Maybe I'm in the minority, but I think he'd do a far better job than Jim Carey.
- CoreyTamas, on 09/02/2008, -16/+60You're not.
I re-watched "Batman Forever" not long ago. Carrey was in his heyday at the time, which means he would do his roles just by being Ace Ventura over and over again. Exaggerated, stylized, and ripping off Matt Frewer left, right and center. :)- hhswatkins, on 09/02/2008, -5/+37Why is he being dugg down?
Everything about Jim Carrey's Riddler was nothing short of awful - redscofield, on 09/03/2008, -1/+10who's matt frewer?

- christianw, on 09/03/2008, -2/+1I think depp would suck in that role.
given the tone of that world, and the villians theyve had so far, the only obvious choice i can think of for the riddler is crispin glover.
he'd ***** pwn hard as the riddler in nolan's batman universe
- hhswatkins, on 09/02/2008, -5/+37Why is he being dugg down?
- richbleak, on 09/02/2008, -9/+22I'm pretty sure the "Maybe I'm in the minority" part was sarcasm.
- richbleak, on 09/02/2008, -0/+18Maybe I'm in the minority in thinking that part was sarcasm?
- richbleak, on 09/02/2008, -1/+4In my defense, how much better would that comment be if that was sarcastic? I was hoping it was meant to point out how ridiculous the idea is that Jim Carey's Riddler could ever be better than just about anyone's in the current film iteration of the Batman universe, let alone Johnny Depp's. I came into this expecting that opinion to be so pervasive that the very suggestion that the alternative was possible would cause ridicule and shame to rain down from the heavens.
- DoctuhJason, on 09/03/2008, -0/+12I just turned your monologue into a dialogue.
- DaHuuuuuudge, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2And now it's a...literary *****?
I think that's the word they taught us in school. - darkwing81, on 09/03/2008, -0/+0what is digg if not a litterary *****? . . .riddle me that.
- insinuate, on 09/03/2008, -2/+14Blasphemy. The ending of that movie makes up for the whole tights wearing escapade, with him in the pysche ward..."I know who Batman is!" "who is he? whats his identity?" "I AM BATMAN!!! AHAHAHAHAHA!"
- tcasey, on 09/03/2008, -1/+12i actually honestly think that if jim carrey got a chance to re-play the riddler, he would do an outstanding job. carrey has developed a lot since 1995 (eternal sunshine, man on the moon). if he took it from a serious, nolan-esque perspective, he could play that role great.
- CoreyTamas, on 09/03/2008, -4/+0Yes. He's really come a long way.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0451079/
- CoreyTamas, on 09/03/2008, -4/+0Yes. He's really come a long way.
- mecharabbit, on 09/03/2008, -1/+2Jim Carrey is certainly no Frank Gorshin, that's for sure.
- CoreyTamas, on 09/03/2008, -1/+0You are *so* right. It's not very Nolan-esque, but check out this amazing (if overblown) performance. I never get tired of watching it. :)

- DemiRonin, on 09/03/2008, -0/+8To be fair, Jim didn't get a great script or a Mr. Nolan as a director
- alothrop, on 09/03/2008, -5/+2i think he meant "maybe I'm a minority..."
not everybody is lucky enough to grow up knowing their parents. be more accepting, people. - PunkRampant, on 09/03/2008, -0/+5Carrey is a good actor. If he was served with a decent script I'm sure he would be great for the role.
- staffell, on 09/03/2008, -1/+1why would you be in the minority? Johnny Depp is fantastic.
- skabyss, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1"I decided not to tell him about the bats, the poor bastard would be seeing them soon enough"

- vat0r, on 09/02/2008, -13/+229He'd actually make the perfect Riddler.
- Rileyluck, on 09/02/2008, -1/+21Riddle me this, riddle me that....
- soulweaponry, on 09/02/2008, -0/+6I suck at riddles
- jgtg32a, on 09/02/2008, -0/+35Wow kinda scary how easy it is to see Depp saying that
- AManWithNoName, on 09/02/2008, -0/+27Who's afraid of the big black bat?
- T8erT0T, on 09/02/2008, -7/+24Just like he made the perfect Willy Wonka?
Not everything Johnny Depp does is stellar. I have my faith in him, but I'm initially skeptical.- HigherLogic, on 09/02/2008, -0/+25I thought Depp as Wonka was an interesting twist, the whole movie had a dark, Burton-esque feel to it in the first place. The problem is, everyone was expecting something like the original, which it clearly wasn't. Then again, even the original Wonka movie, he's sort of a prick. Depp just compounded that.
- DforSpiD, on 09/02/2008, -1/+8I agree with HigherLogic...
It was based on the original book, not the movie and was more similar to the book than the original movie was... - Uiaccsk, on 09/02/2008, -9/+6god, depps wonka movie was awful. a case of big budget and special effects ruining a movie that was supposed to be about subtleties in acting and character development and demonstrating the morals demonstrated so blatantly in the original childrens book.
also, as much as johnny depp rocks, he will never, NEVER be as dope as gene wilder. - endlessoul, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3In addition to HigherLogics post, the original Wonka movie departed from the actual book, so I'd venture to say Wilder and Depp did quite well with their portrayals of Wonka.
- LordVance, on 09/03/2008, -0/+7My big problem with the new Wonka isn't even Depp's portrayal of the character; I prefer Wilder - but they both did great. It was the fact that they ruined everything about the friggen Oompa Loompas
- antonio97b, on 09/03/2008, -4/+3Christopher Walken would have made a better Burton-esque Wonka. Johnny Depp and Burton are friends though so he got the part.
Walken > Depp. - Sethbacca, on 09/03/2008, -1/+6Walken would have been waaaaay tooo creepy as Wonka....
Also, yeah, the Oompa Loompas ruined that movie for me, other than that, the feel was right on. I just hated the Oompa Loompas so much in the Burton version though. - HigherLogic, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2I will agree about the Oompa Loompas, that was really the one thing that I didn't like about the movie. The Grunka Lunkas, on the other hand, I like.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lalBIp4Pono - charlietuna, on 09/03/2008, -2/+1Monsieur Depp - you out there? If you are, I have no doubt you would make a terrific Riddler. Just don't get too Wonka-ish okay? Keep the Riddler 99% creepy, and 1% funny. No Jack Sparrow either.
Otherwise... love your work (great taste in women too).
Cheers - phenom2k7, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1They should of got Weeman from Jackass to represent, best Oompla Loompa EVER !
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQimUs0WzIE
- theOster, on 09/02/2008, -0/+20i'd like to see him as batman...acting like sparrow. hilarity would ensue.
- antonio97b, on 09/03/2008, -7/+2Instead of "WHERE IS HE!?"
It'd be...
"WHERE'S THE RUM!?"
- antonio97b, on 09/03/2008, -7/+2Instead of "WHERE IS HE!?"
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 09/02/2008, -17/+1I thought The Riddler and The Joker were the same person?!
Seriously whoever made Batman needs a little more creativity because those two villains are so similar...- DforSpiD, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4Nope, The Riddler is a schemer
- Blandyman, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4The Joker's a madman while the Riddler is simply a schemer. Joker leaves his calling card (the Joker card) or simply tells Batman what he does, while Riddler likes to play games by forcing Batman to solve clues to find out how to stop him.
- protogenxl, on 09/02/2008, -0/+8I think he would make a better Mad Hatter
- Elranzer, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2He already played the Mad Hatter in Charlie & the Chocolate Factory.
- pootpoot, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Heh, he's actually playing the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (2010).
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/37702
Dated July 29th, so I don't know if anything has changed since then.
- biergutlol, on 09/02/2008, -3/+1is the riddler actually confirmed to be part of a next batman movie? i mean, he's by no means a character to adapt into a believable role; he's defined solely by the fact that he's giving batman hints on his crimes
- adkenc, on 09/03/2008, -0/+21Batman: "Robin, listen to these riddles. See if you interpret them as I do. One: What has yellow skin, and writes?"
Robin: "A ball-point banana."
Batman: "Right. Two: What people are always in a hurry?"
Robin: "Rushing people... Russians!"
Batman: "Right again. Now what would you say they mean?"
Robin: "Banana... Russian... I've got it! Someone Russian is going to slip on a banana peel and break their neck!"
Batman: "Precisely, Robin; the only possible meaning." - swanny89, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2I don't know man they do it all the time with serial killers on crime dramas. The fact that he gives Batman clues makes him an interesting character. It tells us that he doesn't care about the gains of the crime, he just wants control over Batman and Gotham as a whole.
- darkwing81, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2there are alot of serial killers that do that very thing. you have no imagination if you think the riddler cant be turned into a believable character. people were saying the same thing about the joker before it came out.
- adkenc, on 09/03/2008, -0/+21Batman: "Robin, listen to these riddles. See if you interpret them as I do. One: What has yellow skin, and writes?"
- FUR10N, on 09/03/2008, -2/+12idk, I think Edward Norton could be a good Riddler.
- solidus636, on 09/03/2008, -0/+5But he's with Marvel...so I doubt that would happen.
- Elranzer, on 09/03/2008, -1/+1Seems like if Depp played the Riddler, I'd expectthe Riddler to act like either Ed Wood (most likely), the Secret Window guy, or maybe even Ichabod Crane from Sleepy Hollow.
Very unlikely we're gonna see Captain Jack Riddler, and hopefully not Riddler Wonka.- Blandyman, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1I think The Riddler is gonna end up being The Riddler though.
Just a guess.
- Blandyman, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1I think The Riddler is gonna end up being The Riddler though.
- ReplicantSeven, on 09/03/2008, -0/+9Actually, I think Crispin Glover would make an awesome Riddler. Especially in a creepy zodiac serial killer kind of way....
- terminal157, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Wow, great call. That's a movie I want to see.
- sgregory416, on 09/03/2008, -1/+2i think they should have jim carrey come back, i think with nolan behind the camera he would do a much better job than that previous travesty.
- PixelMagic, on 09/03/2008, -0/+4Hugo Weaving = Riddler. Nuff said.
- Berkana, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1Nice. Yeah, he'd be an excellent riddler.
- honeymustardn, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1Nah, it should be David Tennant, as that fan poster had. That would seriously be kick ass.
- Rileyluck, on 09/02/2008, -1/+21Riddle me this, riddle me that....
- ohnoerino, on 09/02/2008, -2/+29I haven't heard his band. I'd assume they're better than "The Lieutenant Dan Band" though.
- kocurejd, on 09/02/2008, -0/+7They can't be any worse than Russel Crowe's band: Russel Crowe and Thirty-Odd Foot of Grunt
- Jhiaxuz, on 09/02/2008, -1/+22Born in New Zealand in sixty-four
A hot-headed actor named Russell Crowe
He loves to act but he loves one thing more:
Fight-in' Round The World
He fight his directors and he fights his fans
It's a problem no one understands
If there's two things he love it's fighting and,
Fight-in' Round The World
Makin' movies, makin' music and
Fight-in' Round The World!
Russell Crowe! - redfred18t, on 09/03/2008, -0/+4***** you Jhiaxuz, I was going to post that!
Although I must say, well played sir, well played.

- Petrarch1603, on 09/03/2008, -0/+7musicians becoming actors are usually better than actors becoming musicians
- terminal157, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3That's because there's a certain amount of acting inherent in performing music and the great musicians tend to be great performers, while an actor might as well be tone deaf.
- kocurejd, on 09/02/2008, -0/+7They can't be any worse than Russel Crowe's band: Russel Crowe and Thirty-Odd Foot of Grunt
- Pvisi111, on 09/02/2008, -45/+39I heard he won't do it unless Tim Burton directs it. Imagine a Batman movie directed by Tim Burton and casting Johnny Depp as the Riddler. Would be ridiculous.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 09/02/2008, -2/+118Tim Burton already did 2 Batman movies, I don't think they'd bring him back for another.
- endlessoul, on 09/03/2008, -1/+14They had better not.
- WHOOMP, on 09/02/2008, -4/+131"Imagine a Batman movie directed by Tim Burton"
i lold- MacHarborGuy, on 09/03/2008, -18/+5AND casting Johnny Depp. If you are going to quote someone, quote the whole thing
- ch1pm0nk, on 09/03/2008, -2/+4@ MacHarborGuy,
He was parphrasing so he doesnt have to. Also, he was making fun of the fact that the guy was obviously clueless Burton has already done Batman before.
I lold too. - honeymustardn, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2He wasn't clueless though. That's why he said imagine a film directed by Burton >>AND
- Pvisi111, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1Lol I meant both of them..I didn't mean just Tim Burton.
- adamgaudreau, on 09/02/2008, -0/+16Burton has said that he never wants to do a comic book movie ever again, let alone another Batman movie. And no, I don't want to find proof.
- EmperorAwesome, on 09/02/2008, -5/+10Good news, you don't have to! This is a website, meaning people reading your comment have full access to the internet. They're capable of doing it themselves if they really cared! Asking for citations shouldn't be acknowledged, as those that do so wish to cop out of an argument while sounding like white tower academic assholes.
- terminal157, on 09/03/2008, -1/+2EmpororAwesome - that's true in this case, but there are situations where it's prudent to demand citations. A lot of people will just spew a bunch of ***** in a debate, you can't just let that go unchallenged.
- exformation, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1Hey maybe this comment was sarcastic too. I mean I lol'd.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 09/02/2008, -2/+118Tim Burton already did 2 Batman movies, I don't think they'd bring him back for another.
- Diggopolis, on 09/02/2008, -3/+44Depp will probably bring something new to the Riddler personae, that ought to be interesting to watch.
- innocentsinner, on 09/02/2008, -7/+5It'll likely be Jack Sparrow in a green suit.
- MasterGrief, on 09/03/2008, -1/+12And is that really such a bad thing?
- temporaryescape, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1anyone that's seen Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas knows how insane Depp can be.
- innocentsinner, on 09/02/2008, -7/+5It'll likely be Jack Sparrow in a green suit.
- erichw1504, on 09/02/2008, -30/+39First of all Christopher Nolan isn't attached to direct a follow up to The Dark Knight. And second of all if/when he is, he's not going to cast Depp as The Riddler.
- pitchblack16, on 09/02/2008, -3/+104are you his personal assistant?
- erichw1504, on 09/02/2008, -3/+34Sounds like it, doesn't it?

- Jonmad17, on 09/02/2008, -0/+22Him and his brother are already thinking about the sequel according to a few interviews they have given. And did Heath Ledger seem like the perfect choice when they announced that he was going to play the joker? How about we wait and see.
- crickey23, on 09/03/2008, -2/+3Jim Henson had a wait and see attitude, and look what happened to him....
- sajorojas, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1What?!
- StandardsDT, on 09/02/2008, -2/+6As Jonmad17 said it's already known that they are starting work on the sequel. Plus from what I remember and have heard Nolan signed on to do three Batman movies.
- blitz718, on 09/02/2008, -1/+4No. Bale, Oldman, and Caine signed on for 3 movies. Nolan did no such thing.
- Blandyman, on 09/03/2008, -0/+4I believe it was the actors who signed contracts but Nolan has been working on a per-project basis.
- CoreyTamas, on 09/02/2008, -4/+3You're right about the first part.
You have no way of knowing the second part.- sljacome, on 09/03/2008, -3/+1Really think the same, I hope if Nolan comes back, he makes a better cast than Depp and Jolie.
Nolan seems far too smart to rely his movies on suckers like them.
- sljacome, on 09/03/2008, -3/+1Really think the same, I hope if Nolan comes back, he makes a better cast than Depp and Jolie.
- hooges, on 09/03/2008, -0/+4Multiple interviews have confirmed that not only is Nolan under contract for one more movie, so is Bale, Michael Caine, among others.
- CoreyTamas, on 09/03/2008, -1/+0Where did you read that Nolan is under contract for another one? Can you give me a source?
- Skishy101, on 09/04/2008, -0/+0It is a fact that he is going to be directing the third movie, but will not be directing a fourth. I don't know if another director would be able to continue the awesomeness of Nolan's vision for any others.
- pitchblack16, on 09/02/2008, -3/+104are you his personal assistant?
- drbonemonkey, on 09/02/2008, -2/+18I could see it.... but I don't even think anybody has began working on the script yet... so.. it might be hard to cast a roll for a movie that has no existing characters yet ;)
- Mothh, on 09/03/2008, -0/+6You sooooo don't live near Hollywood.

- acmaurer, on 09/02/2008, -1/+10I hadn't thought of him for the part until now - but I'd be super excited to see it if he did play the Riddler... But - would he out shine Heath Ledger - if it's even possible?
- Skishy101, on 09/04/2008, -0/+0I don't think he could even come close. For him to outshine Heath, he would have to COMPLETELY change his acting style and be able to do it 10 times better. I mean come one, Heath spent 2 months alone preparing for that character.
- ChristophyBrown, on 09/02/2008, -7/+90Depp is an amazing actor and if anyone can match Heath's performance he's the one to do it.
Ps. He's an very good singer as well, just watched Sweeney Todd.- Mawds, on 09/02/2008, -1/+21There was a barber and his wife...

- ahmedb07, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3kinda like spiderman 3
- nycmac247, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1With farting in the musical numbers, a la South Park?
- batmanz, on 09/02/2008, -3/+13Yeah, because it's so important for a batman character to be able to sing...
- gregharmon, on 09/02/2008, -3/+9Do you have any idea how much they probably edited / tweaked his singing performance? I'm not saying he's probably terrible, but it wouldn't surprise me if he's barely above average.
- sajorojas, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1The only thing I learned about his singing is that he isn't tone deaf. Probably wasn't that hard to "angry sing" like what he did in most of that movie.
- betheturtle, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1I don't believe they tweaked it at all... other than the compulsory white noise removal...
- Mawds, on 09/02/2008, -1/+21There was a barber and his wife...
- kmckanna, on 09/02/2008, -1/+17I can see him doing a very good job with this part. Not only is he a very, VERY diverse actor when it comes to persona's he has to play, but this role seems like the ones he really likes to do.
- apophenic, on 09/02/2008, -3/+1Diverse? "Dark, weird dude" kind of covers it.
- DforSpiD, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4He does the Dark, weird dud pretty well though
- EmperorAwesome, on 09/03/2008, -1/+4Actually, he happens to be very skilled in shifting his emotional center from cowering to cocksure. Any actor can perform in a given range, but to appear physically different without personality quirks is pretty impressive.
- apophenic, on 09/03/2008, -1/+1Dfor: I never said he didn't, I just think that calling him a diverse actor is kind of ridiculous. Bill Murray is a great actor, too, but I wouldn't call him particularly diverse these days.
Emperor: Not sure what you said there. - digitul, on 09/03/2008, -1/+1yes he's esentially the same character in pirates, blow, willy wonka, ed wood... no range at all!

- BestJaxx, on 09/02/2008, -0/+9He was also creepy as hell (in a good kind of way) in Edward Scissorhands and Sweeney Todd.
- TheToecutter, on 09/02/2008, -1/+6Agreed...thus the "hit or miss" comment. =)
- BestJaxx, on 09/02/2008, -1/+2@TheToecutter: Of course, that's why I didn't bury you. In the majority of Depp's roles, I think he has played them very well. The problem with Wonka is that it had a bad script.

- Donniehoward08, on 09/03/2008, -0/+0I agree, maybe some person with some intelligence could have written the article and given the readers some basic facts instead of a bunch of "OMG's" and ""If that isn't proof...then we don't know what is" Bull Crap!
Buried for the poor article, and not the idea
- soulweaponry, on 09/02/2008, -2/+5Right next to heath doing joker, this would be the perfect casting to bring out a new perspective to a comic book character. After carey did riddler i never wanted to breathe the words "the riddler" ever again. But depp? Could give me faith in the role
How would everyone like to see this done? Can you all imagine it yet? I'll be daydreaming about this at work. I'm thinking a jigsaw type character from the saw movies. But that's just me- TheSaintClair, on 09/02/2008, -0/+1I bet they would make the Riddler resemble the Zodiac killer and the killer from seven. Jigsaw is a bit to brutal, he doesnt really give anyone a chance to survive, the riddler in my opinion has always sort of wanted to get caught but by someone worthy enough to catch him.
- musicbear, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1If they made him more real - give him a real name that they refer to him as much as the riddler, make him really psycho like Seven or something and just really go for it. If he's in green tights leaving pop up greeting card style clues... it'll be all over.
- Donniehoward08, on 09/03/2008, -0/+0Ya maybe a jigsaw type character in the aspect of his ideas, but not the killing....the original joker always gave his foes a fighting chance. But as far as his attitude and his traps and stuff, ya jigsaw would be nice. As long as he doesn't go Jim Carey on us then i'll be happy....he did good, but his type of acting wouldn't flow with the first two movies...can't wait!
- TheSaintClair, on 09/02/2008, -0/+1I bet they would make the Riddler resemble the Zodiac killer and the killer from seven. Jigsaw is a bit to brutal, he doesnt really give anyone a chance to survive, the riddler in my opinion has always sort of wanted to get caught but by someone worthy enough to catch him.
- mugupo, on 09/02/2008, -1/+4No surprise, remember Jonny Depp is a good friend of Heath Ledger. He would be another great actor for the role.

- mooseontheloose, on 09/02/2008, -14/+6they should make jason bateman the riddler and change batman too. the guy they got now is a prick. make it like ryan reynolds. that would be awesome.
- BradleyNowell1, on 09/02/2008, -0/+12You're just full of bad ideas aren't you?

- WHOOMP, on 09/02/2008, -9/+7I'm sorry but "The Joker" and "The Riddler" just sound way too similar to me. I know some diehard Batman fans will probably argue that they are very different, but to the general public (myself included) they seem almost like the same concept for a villain.
- Lionhart, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4They're very different.
- BadseedJR, on 09/02/2008, -0/+10Umm, one would tell jokes, and the other would tell riddles. I don't think jokes = riddles.
- WHOOMP, on 09/02/2008, -3/+1I know jokes and riddles aren't the exact same thing, but I'm saying that it just seems a little weird to have two consecutive main villains be based on funny things people tell each other like jokes and riddles, when a villain could potentially be anything. It would just seem repetitive, even if they are actually different when you get to know them.
- superhobo, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3You obviously don't know the definition of riddle. They don't have to be camp like in Forever. A riddle is basically any mystery with an odd quirk to it.
- Donniehoward08, on 09/03/2008, -0/+0Jokes are meant to always be funny but Riddles are meant to keep you thinking. The Joker is more of a sporadic mastermind while the Riddler could pull some kind of character that is always one step ahead...not so much like a crazy man making jokes, just a foe that could match the styles of jigsaw from saw or something....that's what I would like to see anyways
- pootpoot, on 09/03/2008, -1/+0The Riddler can be done a million different ways. Just like the Joker. Oddly enough, the Joker in TDK is not really like the Joker in the comics. That's not to say that the Joker in TDK wasn't a good interpretation; it was ***** great! Although the interpretation wasn't exact, you still saw the essence of Joker (and by essence I mean utter insanity). I imagine that the Nolan brothers simply deconstructed the importance of the Joker (i.e. that he's the yang to Batman's yin) and then added their own different, but still faithful, spin. It worked for the Joker, I'm sure it can work for the Riddler.
- NotYourProdigy, on 09/02/2008, -1/+12Completely blown out of proportion
- supertrombone, on 09/02/2008, -4/+22David Tennant as the Riddler would be my dream

- ishzendejas, on 09/02/2008, -0/+6The thing about the internet casting process is they are going for the obvious. When The Dark Knight was annouced with Ledger as the Joker, his name was nowhere near any of the internet casting wish lists, yet he turned in quite possibly the best performance. People have to think broader.

Buried. - Kohaxx, on 09/02/2008, -2/+25Buried for giving absolutely no information and being written really poorly by someone who doesn't understand the series at all. No the Riddler is not the Joker with a different symbol, try again.
- thenewkasanova, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Does no one get that this is a joke?
- MasterGrief, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1I understand it's a joke, but that doesn't make it a good one or unworthy of ridicule.
- thenewkasanova, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2Does no one get that this is a joke?
- jmpeagle, on 09/02/2008, -0/+2neither nolan nor bale have been attached for a 3rd. Also, Nolan has readings, he doesn't just pick actors he thinks are good. They have to play the part correctly in his eyes. Ledger came way out of nowhere to become the Joker. No one would have predicted that. I don't think it will be someone you are expecting.
Also, what makes anyone sure the Riddler is going to be the bad guy in the 3rd one?- LocalDocal, on 09/02/2008, -0/+1You know, I've been wondering this too. Digg seems to have accepted that the next villain will be The Riddler (terrible choice, in my opinion), but I'm not so sure. I haven't watched TDK yet (waiting for DVD), but I was wondering whether the movie gave a clue? Batman Begins basically outright said that the next villain will be Joker, so I thought perhaps TDK gave an indication of the next villain too.
Of course, Joker is such an obvious choice for a villain that it isn't the same situation, but still.- Kronos6948, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4Going by what you're saying, it means Batman himself would be the villain.
- pagno, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1Haha, yeah. By that, its true. Batman is the next villian.
- ssahagun, on 09/03/2008, -0/+2You have not seen it?
where do live a cave? - pootpoot, on 09/03/2008, -0/+0Well, at the end of Batman Begins, we know the theme and the villain for the next movie (being TDK). To rehash, it ends with the Joker card being flipped over and a discussion over escalation. That's exactly what happened in TDK.
**spoiler** Remember that speech Dent gave to the press? "It's always darkest before the dawn, and I promise you, the dawn is coming!" I think that implies some sort of positive ending for the next installment. At the end of TDK, Gotham and Batman are in shambles. The next installment will undoubtedly leave off that note and include Batman coming to terms with his existence (remember, he wanted to get out of the crime fighting business in TDK). As for the villains, no clue. I imagine it'd be any villain that can propel a story to reflect the theme of hope.
- LocalDocal, on 09/02/2008, -0/+1You know, I've been wondering this too. Digg seems to have accepted that the next villain will be The Riddler (terrible choice, in my opinion), but I'm not so sure. - JDym00, on 09/02/2008, -1/+11Heath Ledger made himself unrecognizable as he sunk into The Joker role. Depp is.. Depp. One of the best actors of this generation, but too big for this movie. And yes, I understand this is the #2 movie of all time. But that doesnt mean they have to nab every A list actor. Freeman & Caine are A listers but are respectable in their parts. They don't take over the scene and take you out of the realm of the movie. I think Depp would, no matter how great of an actor he is.
- bashturd, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1I was going to leave a comment, but you have aready said exactly what i wanted to
- tehbored, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1The Dark Knight was all about the Joker and it was great. If Johnny Depp can do as good a job with the Riddler as Heath Ledger did with the Joker, I don't care.

- AshamedAmerican, on 09/02/2008, -1/+14Why does every horse ***** rumor about Batman 3 hit Digg's front page?
Oh btw Riddler hasn't been a "goofy" style villain for years (jumping around giggling, the way most people think of him), he's a cocky, egotistical, megalomaniacal prick with one of the worst cases of OCD ever.
Appropriately, the Riddler's main thing over the past few years is that people (Batman included) keep underestimating him and it allows him to continuously gain the upper hand, even allowing him to win a few over Batman himself.
These empty casting rumors ("ooooh Depp could play Riddler because he was goofy and kooky as Wonka!) go along with that perfectly.
You're underestimating the Riddler guys, he's going to surprise you.- tehbored, on 09/03/2008, -1/+1No, Depp could play a good riddles because he's capable of being witty and charismatic.
- AAK15, on 09/02/2008, -0/+1As long as the Riddler is the next main villain I couldn't care less
- Heidenreich12, on 09/02/2008, -1/+1Well, I could see him make an excellent riddler. Johnny Depp in my mind hasn't always been put in the best movies, but one that always sticks out is Pirates of the Caribbean. If he can pull off what he did with Captain Jack Sparrow, I think we would have another great movie. Maybe not better than TDK, but it will still rank pretty high.
- itsjoshy, on 09/02/2008, -1/+12I think Will Arnett would make a much better Riddler

- CoreyTamas, on 09/03/2008, -0/+0Huh. That's not bad, actually. If he can do it without all that tongue-in-cheek (which is his trademark), then he might have (and earn) the breakthrough role of his life.
- hellahyphy, on 09/02/2008, -3/+1heck yes!
- Coopster034, on 09/02/2008, -1/+3Calm down fanboys. The author of this is reading wayyyyyyy too much into the radio interview that Depp did. Until Nolan actually agrees to do the third movie we may as well keep speculation to a minimum. Remember after Batman Begins Nolan took a break and worked on some other projects. Give it some time and enjoy basking in the glory of the masterpiece The Dark Knight. Although Depp said the role would be fun, that's all he said. Besides, if we are to take all rumors seriously we should belive that Cher would be playing Catwoman. Yeah...right. I for one am praying to all the gods, even the real ones, that Cher isn't included in third movie in any way, shape, or form.
- juicyjames, on 09/02/2008, -1/+18All these Batman rumors are stupid and highly likely false.
Batman story writer David Goyer is busy writing a new Invisible Man.
http://screenrant.com/batman-script-awhile-david-g ...
Batman screenplay writer Jonathan Nolan is still working on Terminator Salvation, and Batman director Chris Nolan hasn't even signed on to do a third movie yet. He also only casts with a script in his hand.

- jake1986, on 09/02/2008, -4/+6Who is cast is largely irrelevant in my opinion. There's no such thing as a great actor, there's only good actors and great directors. As proof, just look at Uma Thurman in Kill Bill or The Producers and then look at her in My Super Ex-Girlfriend. I rest my case.
- futebollounge, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3i really want to agree with you here, but i cant because philip seymour hoffman is still alive.
if dakota fanning directed him he would still win 9 oscars- darkwing81, on 09/03/2008, -0/+0William H. Macy. or Brando if u wanna go old school
- kitsua, on 09/03/2008, -0/+1It's an important point, in my opinion, though there are always exceptions to prove the rule...
An average, or even bad, actor can, in the hands of a great director, be inspired and crafted into a great performance (see what Terry Gilliam and the Coen brothers have achieved), whereas a great actor can turn out ***** with a crappy script and hack at the helm.
Like I say, there are plenty of exceptions but, by and large, a great director can make a great film (and can coax a great performance) regardless of casting.
- futebollounge, on 09/03/2008, -0/+3i really want to agree with you here, but i cant because philip seymour hoffman is still alive.
- AManWithNoName, on 09/02/2008, -1/+2Depp would be the perfect Riddler. He can play charismatic and dark, as he's proven again and again. And he's certainly a pro at character roles. And he looks like he'd fit the green suit nicely too. I would watch this movie, and while I doubt it could compare with TDK, it'll be a nice wrap-up for the Nolan movies.
That said, this is virtually all speculation. The article is jumping the gun here a lot. They also seem to be under the impression that the Cher-as-Catwoman thing is confirmed too. Take it with a grain of salt.
P.S. Yes, he's in a band, and has done music for several of his movies. Minor Swing from Chocolat and Sand's Theme from Once Upon a Time in Mexico come to mind. He's not bad. - DrNner, on 09/02/2008, -11/+0First of all, Tim Burton did a Batman movie already and sadly it is the best one made. Depp would make a great riddler, instead of Jim Carry which made Riddler look like a queer.
