Behind the Dude: Steve Buscemi on The Big Lebowski
rollingstone.com — Ethan probably called me and said, "We have a script and we're sending it. Tell us what you think." As simple as that. I do remember my impressions reading it, that it was funny and unpredictable. I couldn't tell where it was going.

- Smokeydabear, on 08/29/2008, -2/+32I remember The Big Lebowski came out just after Kingpin, and I was at the age where I thought Kingpin was the absolute best a comedy could get, and I rented The Big Lebowski simply because I thought that it could be another funny bowling comedy. It is so much more than that. It really is a masterful film.

Steve Buscemi is one of the ugliest goodlooking people I like to watch.- Tenlow, on 08/29/2008, -4/+1Because you're a *****, alright?
- celotil, on 08/29/2008, -0/+4Actually, snoobies has a point.
There was an article I saw on here a while back that talked about the perception of beauty. Beauty may be in the eyes of the beholder, but it turns out that the study that was conducted showed that most people who were regarded as beautiful actually had very average features, and the more average the more beautiful.
People who had features that stood out in one way or another, like a large nose for example, were thought of as ugly, not because of the stand out feature as such but because they looked noticeably different from the average. It seems that while beauty might in the eye of the beholder, the beholder is typically going to regard beauty by comparing it as an average to what they've already seen.
Buscemi is one of those people I'd always regarded as "fascinatingly ugly", and after I read the study and looked over the comparison pictures, then looked at Buscemi and several other actors I enjoy watching on the screen, I realised that "fascinatingly ugly" didn't really fit but "fascinatingly different" does.
As an aside, next time you're watching the news or some other talking heads program, mute the audio and really look at the people; look at their eyebrows, their noses, their eyes, their cheeks, etc. You may be surprised, as I was, to realise that they're rather unimpressive in appearance, almost ugly themselves. - kakihara0513, on 08/29/2008, -0/+2Thanks for enlightening my day. Wasn't expecting a good post in this thread.
- Tenlow, on 08/30/2008, -0/+1Apparently nobody here has seen Reservoir Dogs.
- celotil, on 08/29/2008, -0/+4Actually, snoobies has a point.

- labizau, on 08/29/2008, -0/+18I once did movie-oke to that scene in front of about 200 people. You don't realize just how many times Walter screams "This is what happens when you ***** a stranger in the ass!" until you do it in front of a huge audience who has never seen the movie. Crickets.
- mywhitenoise, on 08/29/2008, -0/+18Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps!?
- Ferago, on 08/29/2008, -0/+8TBS editing at it's finest.
- dylio, on 08/29/2008, -1/+2Of course it's his homework, it has his name on it.

- McMahon9, on 08/29/2008, -2/+11I regrettably never got to see this until this year, I had heard so much about it but never actually watched it. However as a sophomore in college seeing it for the first time, I can say it goes down as one of my top 10 comedies easily
- bundwallah, on 08/29/2008, -1/+36Well, that's just like...your opinion man..
- Caulfield, on 08/29/2008, -1/+5You're not wrong, Walter, you're just an *****.

- jlan, on 08/29/2008, -1/+7did it not?
- ladyandthetiger, on 08/29/2008, -3/+4Donny is definitely the most loveable of the three main dudes in "Big Lebowski." He's so sweet and pathetic, so utterly clueless. I'll admit, I still get a little teary eyed every time I watch the final confrontation with the Nihilists and the ashes-scattering scene.
- mywhitenoise, on 08/29/2008, -2/+4Walter is most loveable.
- bweltondav, on 08/29/2008, -3/+3I agreed with your comment up until the "teary eyed" part. Donny is a fun character but nothing in that movie really inspires any significant emotions in me...unless apathy can be counted as an emotion.
- LGod, on 08/29/2008, -10/+4I like you style dude.
- MrJagil, on 08/29/2008, -0/+27Steve Buscemi is my hero. He's so freaking awesome, and the only thing making Armageddon watchable...
- Erythroxylum, on 08/29/2008, -8/+2What about Liv Tyler? What are you, queer?
- mywhitenoise, on 08/29/2008, -1/+4lady looks like a dude.
- MrJagil, on 08/29/2008, -0/+10No, but she, like many other female holywood stars, is forgettable... Steve Buscemi, on the other hand, is so weird and yet so unique and lovable.
- Maxo1128, on 08/29/2008, -0/+0He's a really nice guy too. I'll tell him you said that haha.
- Erythroxylum, on 08/29/2008, -8/+2What about Liv Tyler? What are you, queer?
- billizm, on 08/29/2008, -1/+11So many awesome quotes come out of this movie that you can use in almost everyday life. Just last month or so, my friend bought a new rug for his living room, and I told him it really tied the room together.
- peestandingup, on 08/29/2008, -2/+9Did he get the reference?? If not, find a new friend.
- foshizol, on 08/29/2008, -1/+14"This aggression will not stand, man."
- spkrcity, on 08/29/2008, -0/+4Interesting trivia that fellow digg user mentalfoto pointed out in that "Neo's Passport Expired on 9/11" story:
In the movie "The Big Lebowski" released in 1997 there's a scene at the beginning where the Dude is writing a check at the grocery store and the date he writes is September 11, 1991. On a tv in the store at that moment Bush Sr. is seen on a tv describing the invasion of Kuwait saying the line that the Dude will repeat later, "This aggression will not stand."- Bennito, on 08/30/2008, -1/+2***** it, Dude, let's go bowling.
- spkrcity, on 08/29/2008, -0/+4Interesting trivia that fellow digg user mentalfoto pointed out in that "Neo's Passport Expired on 9/11" story:
- mistervolcom88, on 08/29/2008, -3/+17Here's the full exchange. haha
The Dude: Walter, what is the point? Look, we all know who is at fault here, what the ***** are you talking about?
Walter Sobchak: Huh? No, what the ***** are you... I'm not... We're talking about unchecked aggression here, dude.
Donny: What the ***** is he talking about?
The Dude: My rug.
Walter Sobchak: Forget it, Donny, you're out of your element!
The Dude: Walter, the chinaman who peed on my rug, I can't go give him a bill, so what the ***** are you talking about?
Walter Sobchak: What the ***** are you talking about? The chinaman is not the issue here, Dude. I'm talking about drawing a line in the sand, Dude. Across this line, you DO NOT... Also, Dude, chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please.
The Dude: Walter, this isn't a guy who built the railroads here. This is a guy...
Walter Sobchak: What the ***** are you...?
The Dude: Walter, he peed on my rug!
Donny: He peed on the Dude's rug.
Walter Sobchak: Donny you're out of your element! Dude, the Chinaman is not the issue here! - shutaro, on 08/29/2008, -11/+18*random qote from The Big Lebowski*
- billizm, on 08/29/2008, -3/+11Yours wasn't as funny as the others, though.
I know putting quotes in digg comments is over-done, but not when it comes to The Big Lebowski. - saboola, on 08/29/2008, -1/+4Forget it, shutaro, you're out of your element
- shutaro, on 08/29/2008, -1/+1OVER THE LINE!

- maxsunset, on 08/29/2008, -0/+15Did I miss something? Is Buscemi sitting in a wheel chair in that photo? I had never heard the war-buddy theory; pretty cool...
- bdbr, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1Wheelchairs have handles for people to push, don't they? I think he's just sitting in a sort of director's chair.
- jtbell04, on 08/29/2008, -0/+33Anyone else reading this in Steve Buscemi's voice?
- Ferago, on 08/29/2008, -0/+3I thought I was the only one.
- cambob76, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1You can't escape Steve. I showed my little bro Reservoir Dogs not long ago and then the next day it seemed Buscemi was on at least one movie channel all day long. Pretty hard not to think about him and hear that voice.
- alism, on 08/29/2008, -21/+1Am I the only person in the world that finds The Big Lebowski the dullest, most boring, most unfunny, most overrated movie? Why it's in the IMDb top 250 list will always be a mystery to me.
- Sirocco, on 08/29/2008, -0/+5It's not a movie for everyone, but it's for a helluva lot of people like us.
- bearcat8543, on 08/29/2008, -1/+4go to hell.
- Sraza, on 08/29/2008, -0/+2I find something good in most movies. Many times I've been with a group of people and I'll be the only one having a good time or laughing. I just don't get this movie though. I have to say it was one of the most boring movies I've ever seen. I want to get "it", because I almost always do, I just don't and it's frustrating. I can't even see the appeal others have in it.
I'm going to give a chance again though and add it to netflix and bump it up in my queue. It's been a while since I watched it. - Bertram23, on 08/29/2008, -2/+0yup, it seems to be basically just you.
- jamesmcm, on 08/29/2008, -14/+1Meh, I started watching The Big Lebowski but switched it off halfway through. I thought it was meant to be funny, but it was just crude, obvious American slapstick humour. See: Peep Show, Mock The Week, Monty Python, Alan Partridge, etc. for real comedy.
/Elitist rant
Steve Buscemi rocks though.- Scien, on 08/29/2008, -1/+9You watched it at face value. For a supposed fan of English comedy I'm surprised you missed the nuances of the comedy in this film.
Yes they use a lot of vulgar language, yes there is some physical comedy. But in between most of the comedy is based more on personality and situation.
It is a true classic. - Remmiz, on 08/29/2008, -1/+3"slapstick humor" "Monty Python". Did you even try on that argument?
- jamesmcm, on 08/29/2008, -3/+2Well - I like South Park but I really didn't see the comedy in The Big Lebowski.
- Tenlow, on 08/29/2008, -1/+3You need to watch it again. All the way through.

- dkybruce, on 08/29/2008, -1/+9Fixes the cable?
- bigDah7, on 08/29/2008, -1/+12Obviously, you're not a golfer
- FredFredrickson, on 08/29/2008, -1/+5Truly a classic film, and an interesting take on it from Buscemi. I'd never heard of the "figment" theory, but that's pretty neat too. I'll have to watch it again soon to see how well it works.
- dafragsta, on 08/29/2008, -0/+2Have the Coen brothers ever made a movie that wasn't truly a classic? I mean everything they touch turns to gold. I always feel like Raising Arizona is one of the most underrated movies of all time. I even like the noir Billy Bob Thornton movie they did which was completely off the radar and pretty hard to find when I found out about it.
- sandiegodude, on 08/29/2008, -3/+9"***** it dude, let's go bowling"
I swear that is one of the best mantras around. When ***** happens to you that you can't control, why the hell waste any more time worrying about it? The girl I'm dating now, she's a coworker and she was a bit freaked when we first started dating.. I taught her the Labowski (well, Walter) mantra and we've been good ever since =) - dreicher, on 08/29/2008, -1/+14"Posted Sep 04, 2008 12:29 PM"

- petebot, on 08/29/2008, -1/+17Jeff Bridges should have won an oscar for that movie.
- jschramm03, on 08/29/2008, -0/+2100% agree, its so different then anything else he has played and he pulled if off perfectly. I almost dont associate him with the role he did it so well.

- Morghin, on 08/29/2008, -1/+2Strangely fantastic movie. Every time I see it I find myself noticing another interesting bit that makes me laugh, and to be honest I never really thought about it until I read this article - that there is more to the movie then "meets the eye" I mean. I think I'll go watch it again.
Oh, and Buscemi's an incredibly interesting actor, just take a look at this movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480269/) where it's him and Sienna Miller managing to occupy an hour and a half without getting boring. - JaminKirby, on 08/29/2008, -2/+2"we can go to the In-N-Out burger"

- Wartyboskfapped, on 08/29/2008, -1/+5The concept that Donny is a figment of Walter's imagination is a new one on me, but a stroke of genius. Pity it doesn't hold up. There is a theory going around that The Dude is Buddha, and the story is a metaphorical retelling of the enlightenment of Buddha.
- jayhawk88, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1I don't know, there's at least one blogger who seems to think there might be merit to it:
