- chillypacman, on 07/20/2008, -2/+67The most awesome part is unlike Spider-Man 3, Dark Knight is actually a good movie so basically the success is going to continue and notjust slump after the weekend.
- ColinZeal, on 07/20/2008, -0/+36Holy smokes Batman! This is bigger than Aquaman!
- blur13, on 07/20/2008, -2/+7oh i get it...entourage. :)
- kthoma22, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4funny enough on james camron wiki page. It says he directed aquaman and that it has the highest opening gross for a movie ever.

- Amezis, on 07/20/2008, -1/+15The users at the Internet Movie Database seem to agree: It is the #1 movie on IMDb's all-time top 250 movies:
http://www.imdb.com/chart/top?tt0468569- ColinZeal, on 07/20/2008, -0/+16Well, wait for like 6-7 months to see the "real" rating.. it´ll drop by 0,7-0,9 if it´s a good movie. And this will do that. More if it´s a bad one. This is not.
- OutAndAbout, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7If memory serves, each of the Lord of the Rings movies held #1 right off the bat, then eventually fell.
I would love it if a contemporary film could hold on in the IMDB top ten, but there is some stiff competition. - brainboy77, on 07/20/2008, -1/+7this list ranks dog day afternoon behind finding nemo. you have got to ***** kidding me.
- Akraz, on 07/20/2008, -8/+1After a few months it will drop down below the Godfather. Nothing, NOTHING is better than the Godfather.
- Iztikeit, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4It's certainly not the best movie of all time.........Those IMDb ratings are inflated for many reasons and will drop. (hopefully....if not I've lost all respect for IMDb)
I loved this Batman movie more than almost anything I've seen in ages but it's far from the best movie ever. - ndseifi, on 07/20/2008, -8/+0Buried for thinking imdb is an acceptable form of film criticism.
- ClemsonPoker, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Every source is an "acceptable form of film criticism".
It takes about 8 brain cells to see a movie and rate it on a scale of 1-10. How much stock you put into a source is your call.

The official number should come in tomorrow or Tuesday, but it's still going to be very close to their projected number at this point.

- TheBigBad, on 07/20/2008, -18/+2Just got back from seeing it, what a turd. Too long, overly convoluted plot, huge plot holes (even for a comic book movie), Bale's Batman sounds exactly like Vince McMahon, Ledger's Joker sounds like Stuart Smalley from SNL. Way overhyped, wait for DVD if you want to see it.
- damndj, on 07/20/2008, -2/+13You can join the club of 5 other people in the world who feel the same as you. How exclusive!
- TheBigBad, on 07/20/2008, -7/+5Here we go with the "everyone else likes it so if you don't then you are trying to be different" quip. Their are plenty of movies that are universally liked that I like as well. Their are plenty of movies that are universally panned that I don't like. I could care less about being "exclusive". I thought Ledger did an above average job but doesn't deserve an Oscar mention and I thought the movie itself sucked. If you and everyone else liked it then good on ya. I didn't.
- brock2621, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3LOL I would just LOVE to see your favorite movies of the year... i'm sure there were like 50 waaay better than The Dark Knight.
- RobotCitizen, on 07/21/2008, -0/+6You suck at watching films.
- futebollounge, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3wow bigbad. your knowledge about movies is pure *****. i have a few friends like you and i realized their problem is that they never got into good movies and now they are in their 20's and think movies should focus on entertaining people and they dont even bother to look for details. thats what i call sucking at watching movies.
- TheBigBad, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1futebollounge - so what you are saying is that movies shouldn't focus on entertaining people? Brilliant. I love how people in this thread tell someone that their OPINION is wrong. I simply stated an opinion. I didn't say you were wrong for liking the movie. ***** fanboy ***** never cease to amuse.
- futebollounge, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1i dont care if its an opinion, its still wrong. if i said baseball isn't entertaining enough i would get bashed by people who have a lot of knoweldge on baseball and they would probably tell me something along the lines of "you dont know ***** about baseball." so because your casual movie goes you don't really know how to appreciate a good movie. you fail to look beyond entertainment. to me entertainment means amazing story, with amazing acting and great direction.
- damndj, on 07/20/2008, -2/+13You can join the club of 5 other people in the world who feel the same as you. How exclusive!
- jimmaculate, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4Truly Chris Nolan and his team have a work to be proud of. I hope that it even gets a few oscar considerations to show people just how far the comic book movie genre has come.

- dancandigg, on 07/20/2008, -29/+417Nice. But I always roll my eyes at these "record breaking" opening weekends, 'cause they don't take into account that the price of tickets goes up!!
- pintomp3, on 07/20/2008, -0/+124true, though i don't think they've got up much since spiderman 3. number of tickets sold or showings sold out would be a better indicator.
- lflimon, on 07/20/2008, -7/+18If I'm not mistaken I believe that there were about 300,000 midnight screenings. And that was just at midnight!
- Fadakar, on 07/20/2008, -3/+82That's what a midnight screening is...
- Nasterisk, on 07/20/2008, -5/+36I don't know, I kind of prefer the daytime midnight screening.
- DraxusD, on 07/20/2008, -4/+26I'm a big fan of the nighttime midday screening
- danj321, on 07/20/2008, -3/+27Those are both fine, but i prefer mid-morning morningtime midnight screening.
- mhuggins, on 07/20/2008, -17/+2I actually freeze time so that my entire midnight screening takes place at midnight, not just the very first instant of the movie. Oh, but I allow the reels and lights and stuff to still work even though time is frozen. Yeah, that's it.
- OandA, on 07/20/2008, -11/+2That would also not be a good indicator because this movie was longer than spiderman.
- RobotLeAwesome, on 07/20/2008, -0/+24also, spider-man 3 was awful.
- teamgwho, on 07/21/2008, -2/+5I never watch a midnight screening until after second breakfast

- leahcim, on 07/20/2008, -3/+62Price of tickets going up = inflation.
- Cole2026, on 07/20/2008, -5/+43Ever think about in in the way that maybe higher ticket prices may scare many people away from seeing movies in theaters as well? The Dark Knight was a rare exception for me, but I rarely see movies in theaters because of the 10 dollar ticket prices and the ridiculous concession food prices (usually I try to buy drinks and candy and the like at a K-Mart or something, but I can't really buy popcorn).
I agree with you though, it should be reported in numbers of tickets sold.- TheSpore, on 07/20/2008, -3/+5The best way to go see movies is to see a matinée showing on a weekday. At a local theater near me, regular tickets are $8, but matinée showings are $6, and matinée showings on weekdays are $4.
Also, don't buy any of the food there. You can either eat at home or choose from one of the many restaurants that often take up residence near theaters. - damndj, on 07/20/2008, -3/+9Why the ***** do you want to drink booze at a bar? It's annoying. Stop doing it.
- bexamous, on 07/20/2008, -6/+1Get a job! Who the hell can go to a matinee on a weekday?
- Ramenhood, on 07/20/2008, -4/+1Do what me and my family used to do, make popcorn before you leave the house and stick it in your mom's purse.

Some people (like me) work jobs with weird hours that give us free time during the day. This is nice during the summer, because being out of college for the summer, the days are free to see a matinee. - bexamous, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Lolz :) Stop slacking, take classes during summer. - Xihix, on 07/20/2008, -6/+84I took a look at my ticket for Spiderman 3, and I paid the same amount for it as I did with The Dark Knight. So uhh... Not really sure what you're talking about.
- evil-doer, on 07/20/2008, -2/+69wait.. you kept your ticket for a spiderman movie? is that a keepsake to pass on to your grandchildren?
- anubis2night, on 07/20/2008, -3/+21I'm betting he kept his ticket as a reminder of just how big a piece of ***** that last spidey film was and how much he lost. At least I hope that's why he kept it. Anyways I would agree, theater prices haven't gone up this year, especially since fuel, food and other expenses have and luxuries like movies are usually the first items people get rid of, no reason to give people more incentive not to go.
- juckman, on 07/20/2008, -11/+3So uhh... since the theater you saw Spiderman 3 at didn't go up in price, then all theaters must've stayed the same price, right?
- Nick22, on 07/20/2008, -7/+4I still have my ticket from Star Wars episode 3....
- OutAndAbout, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6The best usage for your ticket stub...
Use it as a bookmark as you read through the original Marvel "Secret Wars" and "Web of Spiderman" series. It will make for a great reminder as to how badly Spiderman 3 utilized some great story lines. - TalonTear, on 07/20/2008, -3/+1It's called inflation professor...and wait...you kept your ticket stub?
- teamgwho, on 07/21/2008, -1/+5I have my ticket stub from ROTJ. Not the SE released in 2000 whatever, the 1983 ticket stub.
Yes I have OCD, ADHD and a few other D's. and yes I save everything. - bravo1995, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4Jesus, that's a lot of acronyms.
You should come work for the government. We love that *****.
- deiz92, on 07/20/2008, -13/+5It also costs more to make the movie too. So infaltion is not an issue here really. The price goes up in relation to making the movie, so the ratio is probably the same as it was 20 years ago when it cost less for the ticket, but also less to make it.
- Ajajadude, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I seriously doubt that's the case.
- Tenlow, on 07/20/2008, -3/+49What bothers me more is the fact that they've called the weekend already, but it's 9am on a sunday. Usually the weekend isn't over until after the weekend.
- candafilm, on 07/20/2008, -1/+14A weekend box office usually is Friday and Saturday since Sunday shows a low percentage of moviegoers. Put it does take a projection of what they will make on Sunday.

I thought this as well but I trusted my diggers to fill me in on the scoop. Look around, the answers here. =) - TheGooseyOne, on 07/20/2008, -1/+7This is an estimate for what the box office will be when it closes tonight at midnight. The box office weekend goes from 12:00 AM friday to 11:59 PM Sunday. It doesn't completely exclude Sunday like the poster above said.

- ModernChem, on 07/20/2008, -11/+6precisely. Im payin 9 bucks at my thater compared to 5 about 8 years ago. that mean that they on;ly have to get 5/9ths the people in there to tie the record
- HOTM, on 07/20/2008, -2/+25Spiderman 3 was only one year ago.
My ticket prices haven't gone up since then at my local theaters. - JammoBlammo, on 07/20/2008, -3/+28That's because five year olds get cheaper tickets.
- ModernChem, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1that too was an inflated record then. use your imagination.
- HOTM, on 07/20/2008, -2/+25Spiderman 3 was only one year ago.
- drobie, on 07/20/2008, -8/+3If you do it by the $$, you'd have to scale for inflation; movie *cost* has never really been looked at, and maybe caring about that ratio is cool, but that's not what's being done here.
Otherwise, if you want to do it by tickets sold, don't forget you have to worry about population growth. It would be better to have a ratio tickets / population. I'd enjoy seeing how older movies compare with that in mind.- cvindustries, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4It's more complicated than that. Entertainment options have changed. In the 1930's and 40's, when very few places had a/c, and there were less things to do, the percent of the US population that went to the movies was vastly higher than today. And you can't compare pre-vhs movies to today, because they would simply be released every few years (ala Snow White, Gone with the Wind). Even if you ran regression models with a dummy dichotomous variable for the home rental market, and then factored in population growth, CPI, and other indexes, it is still going to be apples to oranges.
Personally, I think week over week drop in attendance is the best measurement. That tells how good a movie really is. - drobie, on 08/28/2008, -0/+0Randomly looking at my history brought me to noticing this reply, so forgive this late posting...
Just wanted to say that that was very well put- damned well put- you've made me really appreciate looking back to see it!

- AndrewZander, on 07/20/2008, -12/+6If you check out this article about The Dark Knight sales it will show that Spider-man 3 actually sold slightly more tickets when you take into account the increased cost of movie tickets:
http://www.fandango.com/darkknightsetsweekendrecor ...- OutAndAbout, on 07/20/2008, -3/+1Take into account how much more Spiderman 3 cost than The Dark Knight ($78mil more according to boxofficemojo) and there is no contest.
- bravo1995, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5Right, but wasn't it a shorter movie and therefore had more screenings?
- silenttjp, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Article says it may have, doesnt say it did.
- GarrettB, on 07/20/2008, -1/+5I have been paying $7.50 for the longest time, I haven't paid anything less. :S
- CTRaider, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8Have we also taken into account the extra run time of TDK? Fewer movie times in the same 24hr period when compared to Spiderman 3.
- Kragit, on 07/21/2008, -3/+4But it was released in more theaters than Spidey 3. ;)
- djbittner, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3Inflation combined with the rise of ticket prices always make me wary of these breaking records.
However, Dark Knight deserves every award possible in my opinion. Unlike any other. And I mean that. - red40, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1actually the number are adjusted. now it doesn't take account for more theatres being open than when say... star wars opened. but the $ is adjusted accordingly.
- vfreak2, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Not to sound sour, but the thing that matters to the studios is money after all, not how many tickets are sold.
Reminds me of the Nielsen blu-ray market share graphs, it's in money made, but remember that a blu-ray costs more than a DVD (right now). - WileyK, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1Ticket prices for me haven't gone up in about 3 years, where the hell do you live?

- allengeer, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1I don't really think any of these things really are valid measures seeing as how the population keeps seeming to increase.

- silentb0b, on 07/20/2008, -3/+30heath has 1 more movie to come out. that terry gilliam one.
- talkingwires, on 07/20/2008, -1/+28Ledger's final performance? Try Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus", which comes out next year and will be Ledger's final performance. Of course, he died in the middle of filming it, so now Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law have stepped in to play the character in scenes Ledger had not yet filmed.
Apparently, the plot involves traveling through "portals", and since those were the scenes not filmed when Ledger died, the character's appearance will change each time he goes though a portal.
To me, it sounds like a brilliant way to preserve Ledger's final performance without reshooting the scenes it with another actor.
Hopefully Gilliam can pull it off. He never seems to catch a break, does he?- random19, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6And Tom F*cking Waits plays Satan so you know it'll be great.

- spoogieking012, on 07/20/2008, -2/+98and the dark knight really puts it in perspective how ***** it was
- jdunlop2179, on 07/20/2008, -22/+449Wanna see a magic trick?
- rudeboyskunk, on 07/20/2008, -0/+127Quite possibly the best part of the entire incredibly awesome movie.
- donkz, on 07/20/2008, -26/+1i will make a pencil .. tssk .. disssappear
- beth1970, on 07/20/2008, -9/+1That was awesome!
- DannyDriffs, on 08/25/2008, -0/+11Ta Da!
- grizzlybrice, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Ba Baaaa!
- teamparadox, on 07/20/2008, -6/+51Yea that was pretty good. Everyone in the theatre laughed at it which made me wonder what kind of people i was watching with. I get the humor in the situation but it was probably intended to be a more uneasy dont laugh out loud kind of humor imo.
- cinder, on 07/20/2008, -3/+38Why so serious? (srsly)
- JFallon126, on 07/20/2008, -0/+35That was the genius part of Ledger's Joker you couldn't help but laugh. Then afterwards you thought to yourself...why did I laugh...that was horrible. It was perfect.
- lurkronix, on 07/20/2008, -1/+7Stephen King has noted that when he does live readings of his work, and touches upon something particularly horrifying, it's like stand up comedy: everybody laughs. He thinks it's a way to dispel fear in a public venue.
- damndj, on 07/20/2008, -3/+1We laughed too.
- Iztikeit, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4Black humor, it has been around for ages. I thought it was brilliant how ***** up he could be (the scene when he was in the interrogation room with that lone fat police officer had me laughing, but I was alone on that one) yet still have everyone laughing.
- anothrnbdy, on 07/20/2008, -6/+1My friends and I were just about the only ones laughing in the entire theater. But then again, we just have a kind of morbid sense of humor.
- DarkDays, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1People in my theater had an "OH SHI-" laughter.
- FrenchAnarchy, on 07/20/2008, -1/+35TA DAH!
- whatthefu, on 07/20/2008, -6/+3Was that really the line? I thought he said something like "I'm going to show you a magic trick." I know it doesn't matter, I'm just wondering if that's going to be a famous misquote like "Luke, I am your father."
- Iztikeit, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2No, it won't be.
- fusionFactor, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1He IS his father, though.
- ShinyDemon, on 07/21/2008, -0/+6"How 'bout a magic trick... (sticks pencil in table) I'm gonna make this pencil... (gestures to it) disappear... (makes it disappear) ta-da!... It's... (waves hands) It's gone."
I found it on youtube and saved it (it's already been taken down) so I've confirmed the quote.
- Moiax, on 07/20/2008, -0/+9It was great seeing the whole audience wince at the same time, and then hear the scattered laughter and applause come after a few seconds.
- brainboy77, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8personally, i think the bank heist was more awesomer. but, this was a great scene nonetheless.
- Yogie, on 07/20/2008, -0/+24The quote goes as follows:
(joker walks in laughing)
Joker: I thought my jokes were bad
Black Gangster: Give me one reason why I shouldn't have my boy here pull your head off?
Joker: How bout a magic trick? I'm gunna make this pencil disappear.
*blam*
TA DAHHHH! ITSSS its goneee. - jordansky, on 07/20/2008, -0/+19During that scene at the theater I was in, a little boy started to cry. No joke.
- AustinHannah, on 07/20/2008, -1/+5Yeah, I remember that line too. Cool.
- InfinitySnatch, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2Reminded me of when I was like 7 and saw The Phantom movie. Almost started crying after that guy had his eyes stabbed out by the booby-trapped microscope.
- fmyidotcom, on 07/21/2008, -2/+2I got such an adrenaline rush after that. It was definitely my favorite small scene of the movie.
- charris1980, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1the mob meeting, the confession room, and the hospital scene were the best. i usually would mention action scenes, but those scenes made the movie for me, not action.
"taaa daaa, it's gone!"
- PilotHead, on 07/20/2008, -13/+2Well deserved too! Praise Christopher Nolen!
- Heaiser, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4He might take the praise a little more seriously if you spelled his name right.
- darkchild82, on 07/20/2008, -19/+274I'm so happy it beat the absolute *****-fest that was 'Spiderman 3'. The Dark Knight deserves every praise that it's getting. (Now, if only Christian Bale's voice wouldn't change drastically every time he would put on the suit. It was the only minor complaint I had)
- KibblesnBitts, on 07/20/2008, -3/+40do you really want hardcore fanboys whining about how nobody in the movie could parallel the voice of both bruce wayne and batman?
- NeoSporin, on 07/20/2008, -4/+34Well, then they would find out who he was, wouldn't they.
But yes, his voice did get incredibly annoying- whahaa, on 07/20/2008, -12/+1that one guy figured out who he was anyway.
- fnkydonuts, on 07/20/2008, -5/+190that never bothered me, if anything it added to the realism. in batman begins he learned to use fear as a weapon. By using an intimidating voice, it brings more fear to the person he is trying to get information out of. Also he is bruce wayne, a very rich person, who is known by everyone in gotham... now if he used his normal voice ... it wouldn't take long till someone figured out who he was based on his voice.
- zaklampert, on 07/20/2008, -0/+20agreed. bruce wayne intentionally makes his voice sound dark.
now, SWEAR TO ME! - Newedge14, on 07/20/2008, -1/+7I just couldn't get over the fact that he looked like he was wearing a retainer..
- Rogpog777, on 07/20/2008, -1/+11That isn't intimidating.......that's my grandfather with laryngitis.
- ROFLance, on 07/20/2008, -1/+22He didn't have to use it on Morgan Freeman in that sonar room though. They had like a 5 minute conversation where he used the batman voice.. alone.. in the bat "cave"
- RobotLeAwesome, on 07/20/2008, -1/+8there's a mindset that goes along with the suit, if he didn't make them different on all occasions he could ***** up more easily.
- zaklampert, on 07/20/2008, -0/+20agreed. bruce wayne intentionally makes his voice sound dark.
- noots, on 07/20/2008, -0/+44it's part of Bruce Wayne's "act" for batman, it's supposed to sound over-the-top and forced, he's trying to set himself apart from the other humans of gotham and add to the legend he's trying to create for his alter-ego batman.
- npsken, on 07/20/2008, -10/+3The part I found annoying were the ads at the beginning. Did anyone else feel like they sat for 45 minutes waiting for the freaking movie to start?
- RyeBrye, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3The IMAX theater I went to had exactly 1 trailer before the movie.
I don't know if it's because it's too expensive to make trailers in the IMAX format, or if it's because they only showed trailers for upcoming IMAX movies - but I was pleasantly surprised. - hagfish70, on 07/20/2008, -1/+8I did until the Watchmen trailer.
- parkskier, on 07/20/2008, -16/+8Watchmen looked incredible lame.
- jpbleuu, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5nope i saw it at the imax. i only had to sit through a commercial for verizon fios, a teaser for harry potter and the watchmen. which looks awesome.
- RyeBrye, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3The IMAX theater I went to had exactly 1 trailer before the movie.
- b3owulf, on 07/20/2008, -8/+1Spoilers below:
The only complaint is the voice change? While I loved the movie, I have many more complaints... for instance the entire cell phone part.... explosions that kill (presumably) everyone in the room except for the one person who detonated.... How did the joker have inside knowledge of virtually everything happening in the city....- UNL1M1T3D, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5Because it's a movie, that's why.
- FaTPonY, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4You see, the joker and the policeman were in the interrogation room, that was made out of brick and the like. After the bomb asploded, he cut the police officer's throat.
- SasquatchBill, on 07/20/2008, -11/+5I'm probably going to get destroyed for this, but while I thought the movie was really good, I don't see why everyone is so mind-blown by it.
I think Heath Ledger CLEARLY stole the movie. I kept wanting to see him come back on, and see more of that character. The scene with the pencil took me by surprise, wonder what the hell just happened exactly, and made me think "What is this crazy ***** going to do next?!" He absolutely made the movie.
However, there seemed to be a lot of gaffes around the other characters that just made the movie seem unpolished. The first I noticed was in the courtroom - the baddy says some line about killing Dent, pulls a gun, points it at his chest, Dent looks surprised, then his face switches to angry, then he shoves the gun aside, then he punches the guy. It seemed like such a contrived scene that was just unbelievable. Other examples? The bat bike bouncing off the wall. Batman NEVER being injured when falling from a great height - despite the discussion about his armor at the beginning of the movie.
It was cool, it was fun, it was seasons in the sun, but I think a lot of people are just so blown away by the Joker that they miss paying attention to what the rest of the film is telling them.- zaklampert, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8dent looked surprised because the gun didn't fire. had to do with him being lucky.
the bat pod has huge tires and a really ***** turning radius. i'm sure bruce practiced the spin around move. this is sort of a dumb point anyway, because a huge semi had just flipped over end to end. i get really frustrated when people can't set reality aside for a couple hours and just enjoy what they're watching.
batman was hurt at the end. remember him stumbling off to the bat pod?
the movie wasn't perfect, but it was damn close. the cinematography was just mind blowing. they minimized the use of CGI. the dialogue was chilling...it just looked and felt like it was supposed to. heath definitely stole the show, but he had to. the movie was about the joker.
my only problem with the whole movie was they didn't show what happend to the party after bruce and rachel when flying off the building. did the joker just hang out? that cut was really jarring. i'm excited to (hopefully) see a deleted scene when the dvd comes out. - SasquatchBill, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Oh, did he try to fire the gun? I guess I missed that. If that was the case I think I would have been able to forget it.
I have no problem dismissing some reality, especially in a comic book movie, but sometimes its pretty damn hard to give. Batman and Rachel fly out of a building, and land on a car, and they're just fine? What ever happened to Batman using gadgets to slow down the descent or something? That's a LOT more believable than just crashing onto a car and then saying "Are you Ok?" Thankfully, it wasn't pervasive. There were just a few instances of it, and it was annoying.
Your last point is good - but its funny, I didn't even notice that one. I was too annoyed with them landing on the car, and then ready for the next thing to happen, to notice.
- zaklampert, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8dent looked surprised because the gun didn't fire. had to do with him being lucky.
- JFallon126, on 07/20/2008, -0/+15He does that on purpose...to mask his voice. Otherwise people might be like..."Hey aren't you Bruce Wayne". BW is a celebrity after all...
- TheBigBad, on 07/20/2008, -7/+2He sounds exactly like Vince McMahon.
- chadillak, on 07/20/2008, -13/+1my only other nitpick was the ending. we should never see superheroes running away. it looked suspiciously like a little girl running away crying.
- AdobeWan, on 07/20/2008, -0/+12Methinks the entire movie flew over your head. It's all about sacrifice. By *telling* them to hunt him, he takes on the awesome burden of providing the "real" heroes with a shiny persona, thereby becoming the "dark" knight. He gave up the credit, he gave up being the hero, and all so that he could actually keep saving the city.
Jeeze, did you even listen to Gary Oldman's closing lines? - chadillak, on 07/20/2008, -3/+1all i know is it looked ridiculous. everyone in the theater laughed.

- lukerat88, on 07/20/2008, -2/+5honestly, these frigg'n fanboys. This is not the best movie ever made. It was a great movie, but was it better than The Godfather? Shawshank Redemption?

- Dan005, on 07/20/2008, -16/+6Well deserved.
- lyxxen, on 07/20/2008, -15/+2The weekends not even over yet.........wow
- MasterPlayer, on 07/20/2008, -4/+104At least The Dark Knight is an amazing movie which deserves to be at the top of the box office, unlike Spiderman 3.
- boydrew, on 07/20/2008, -6/+26This movie lived up to its hype.... spiderman was more like a rickroll....but without the fun boyish rick astley and catchy pop song
- fakeplasticsnow, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8That was quite possibly the best description of Spiderman 3 I have ever heard. I think I would rather be rickroll'd for qan hour than see that movie again though. Dark Knight ftw.
- CannedMango, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Spider-Man 3, while a letdown, has hit hyperbolic levels of hate on places like Digg and Reddit. It was still an entertaining movie... as long as you ignore what they did to Venom.
- boydrew, on 07/20/2008, -6/+26This movie lived up to its hype.... spiderman was more like a rickroll....but without the fun boyish rick astley and catchy pop song

- rudeboyskunk, on 07/20/2008, -13/+4Damn you beat me to it! Digg for you, sir.
- MOJIRA, on 07/20/2008, -6/+15Yeah, I mean it'll probably pull in another 30 or 40 mil on Sunday alone. And after that, it's all bets off because word of mouth for this movie will be good, whereas a big blockbuster movie like this usually trails off the second week when people realize it sucks (a la Hancock).
- happyfundave, on 07/20/2008, -0/+14Also I already know people who have seen this 2 or 3 times. I don't think anyone bothered to see spidey 3 a second time.

- wampastompa, on 07/20/2008, -1/+11It's a weekend estimate, the exact totals will be out on Monday. Based on Friday and Saturday they can accurately predict the totals for Sunday.
- TheGooseyOne, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4What this guy said. People saying that box office weekends don't include Sunday have no idea what they are talking about.

- TheDFactor, on 07/21/2008, -4/+0when they say weekend maybe they mean the end of the fiscal week. which is usually sunday to saturday.
- sticko13, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1The box office weekend runs 12:00 AM Friday to 12:00 AM Sunday
- poontangpirate, on 07/20/2008, -20/+3Watch your ass Titanic!

- thasturg, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3The studios estimate the business they believe is going to happen on Sunday. That's why on Monday, when the actuals are released, the box office can shrink or grow depending on actual ticket sales.
- pantone286, on 07/20/2008, -16/+2Um...yeah...so...what......
I am pretty sure that I am not getting a check.
Why do people insist on acting like knuckleheaded movie producers? - Lacero, on 07/20/2008, -14/+1Good golly, gumdrops. These numbers are incredible!
- mogebier, on 07/20/2008, -14/+1Um...... it's SUNDAY. They haven't counted the Sunday numbers yet. Can we wait until tomorrow to start these kinds of threads??
- morninglorii, on 07/20/2008, -12/+6So this was posted with plenty of Sunday left... is this a projection, or what they've made so far? From reading the article, it seems like the latter, but the wording they used was "Sunday numbers," which is snakey enough that I don't really know.
- pin0chet, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3It's a projection.
- pauleku, on 07/20/2008, -13/+2I wonder if they factor in the fact that tickets are $10 (as opposed to older movies, where the tickets were much less).
- FatherG, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3$6.25 in Virginia, 4:20 matinée.
- idleidol, on 07/20/2008, -2/+0Yes, they do.

So, wow.- leahcim, on 07/20/2008, -5/+137So we'll add $34.50 to the total up there.
- PRGUY85, on 07/20/2008, -49/+3Love how the ignorants quickly come to bash other cultures/countries they don't know anything about.

- insomniac8400, on 07/20/2008, -3/+9Other countries? Puerto Rico is America you idiot. I hope the PR in your name "PRGUY85" does not mean Puerto Rico. If so you take the ignorant cake.
- Iztikeit, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6You can rag on America all day and Americans will usually laugh (well, they once did). Joke about a different country and you get flack.
- PRGUY85, on 07/20/2008, -11/+1America is not a country...There's North America, South America, Latin America...If you are referring to United States of America then give it its proper name and not complete domain of almost the entire Western Hemisphere by calling it America.
- acitcratnA, on 07/21/2008, -0/+7"Latin America"
First of all, there are only two continents in America, and those are North and South America.
Second of all, even if Latin America were valid, it would be Central America.
North, Central, South, makes sense rather than North, Latin, South. - PRGUY85, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Nah, let's all forget about this and continue to enjoy The Dark Knight experience and everything it is doing in any country or region be it Puerto Rico, America, South America, North America, Central America, Europe.
- lalunacreciente, on 07/25/2008, -0/+0leahcim, you're an ignorant person [as well as the people who thumbed up his comment] who has no idea how developed Puerto Rico is. You probably think we all live in palm trees and have no idea what a Starbucks is.
- banser, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0Awesome.

the sleep deprivation turns into full on hallucinations and really compliments the Joker's face. - RobotLeAwesome, on 07/20/2008, -0/+13pft, amateurs – I go to the least popular showings early in the day and buy 20 tickets – I've *seen* this movie 400 times.

- ginestony, on 07/20/2008, -10/+3you know, the reason these opening weekend box office records keep getting broken is because the price of a freaking movie ticket keeps going up. Let's do the math on this one with the correct ratio of ticket prices today versus ticket prices in 1982 when E.T. came out...
regardless, I don't disagree that this is a great movie.- idleidol, on 07/20/2008, -2/+8They adjust for inflation/average ticket prices.

but yeah, it was that good and lives up to the hype - RRJackson, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Internet ticketing has helped a lot with the accuracy of projections, though. For example, locally all the local IMAX screenings other than the earliest and latest Sunday shows sold out before the midnight premiere screening. So they already knew what their weekend sales were going to look like before the weekend started. I imagine that's been the story in a lot of places.

- Hypomanic, on 07/20/2008, -0/+11I hate my small city. It's been sold out at each of the two movie theaters, every showing since it opened.
- jparkinson, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6Thats pretty much the story anywhere...
- TheSpore, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8That's why you buy your tickets ahead of time.
- AvronC, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Where the hell do you guys live? I live in a city with 30,000 I walked down a half hour early to our only theater and got seats.
- AxsToro, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1I live in a big city, sold out in 11 theaters, we had to go out to a crappy theater to see it...I think I got shot.
- Dralite, on 07/20/2008, -7/+2the weekend isn't even over yet.... damn...
- TeraRealm256, on 07/20/2008, -15/+18so if you take 155 mil and divide by $10...the avage ticket price in the usa...i would assume...that's 15.5 million tickets sold...now use that number and calculate the old..maybe 4 year old price of an average ticket price of $7.50 and you get $116.25 million opening weekend...that gives it a number 3 slot...but hey...this is just a basic calculation if I did it right and says nothing...i think it does deserve the number one slot...it was amazing! spiderman SUCKED!
- happyfundave, on 07/20/2008, -0/+16i was spending much more then $7.50 four years ago, maybe about $9. I paid $10.50 for my Dark Knight ticket
- tennismac, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1Many people also catch the matinee showings on the weekends too...which was what i did. And that's half price ($5) where I am.
- dagamer34, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6Movie ticket prices actually don't increase that much. And most sites will adjust for inflation after the fact.
- D3koy, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7I was paying 8.50 for tickets for Spiderman 3, and I paid 8.75 for tickets this weekend. Granted, I don't live in the same place, so tickets are probably just rising at different rates around the country
- Densetsu, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2Tickets are in the neighborhood of $14 in Canada. With the two dollars in parity, that's $14 USD.
- schrutefan, on 07/20/2008, -2/+2Thats why you set up a group-buy from cineplex.com. If you order 300 admit one passes directly from them, it's less than $7 per pass and they're good for two years. I have not paid more than $7 for a movie ticket in 8 years.
Don't know if they have anything like that in the states. - bigmrpig, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=1 ...
We've got Costco tickets that are like, $7.50. Not quite as cheap, but you only have to buy 5 =)

- AndrewZander, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3For a more "official" analysis of the sales between The Dark Knight and Spider-man 3, check out this article:
http://www.fandango.com/darkknightsetsweekendrecor ... - joaob, on 07/20/2008, -2/+6The average ticket price is $7.08 compared to Spiderman 3 when it was $6.88. Putting The Dark Knight only 0.02 behind Spiderman 3.
So I give your math and your post a big fat F for Fail.- guyperson, on 07/20/2008, -4/+1Since when does 7.08 - 6.88 = 0.02? Oh, the irony.
- rohcky, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5By .02, he meant the total number of tickets sold.
From Fandango: "At 2007's average price of $6.88, "Spider-Man 3" sold 21.96 million tickets over opening weekend. Media By Numbers estimates today's average movie prices at $7.08, which means "The Dark Knight" would have sold 21.94 million tickets."
21.96 - 21.94 = .02. Oh, the embarrassment.
- Newedge14, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3I saw it for $6, god I feel cheap
- Moiax, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2New theater opened in our area that has $7 tickets until 3pm. So I payed less than I did for spider-man.
And I'm pretty sure that otherwise, It's been 10 bucks for a while. - postal21, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2In 3-4 years the ticket price has gone up 50-75 cents... now popcorn... thats a different story.
- Mr.RX99, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Hey... my local theater charges 7.50 now. Although that is student price. Yay discounts!
- Wasserbrunner, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0there is no way the average ticket price is 10 bucks....the most i have ever paid in my life for a ticket was $9. and i saw tdk for 8.50. and i remember paying similar amounts for the past 5 years.
im sure it has gone up a bit, but not nearly as drastic as you claim. where do you get your facts?
- happyfundave, on 07/20/2008, -0/+16i was spending much more then $7.50 four years ago, maybe about $9. I paid $10.50 for my Dark Knight ticket
- naugrim, on 07/20/2008, -10/+5Is it me, or is the weekend not over yet? I just got home (literally) from watching the movie and by my calendar, it's still Sunday.
I wonder what the midnight Thursday through evening Sunday showings will total all told. - Mannyy, on 07/20/2008, -18/+7Bah..
The Godfather > TDK
bury me now fanboyz- hagfish70, on 07/20/2008, -4/+1What did I tell you about posting on Digg, Coppola?
- FullMetalNIN, on 07/20/2008, -5/+2Who would disagree with you? What an absurd comparison.
The Godfather > Good Burger- jasongbc, on 07/20/2008, -1/+0I disagree... The Godfather was ***** boring. Scarface, Casino or Goodfellas... Those were swell. I liked Dark Knight as much as Scarface.
- VaporBro, on 07/20/2008, -5/+4I haven't seen the Dark Knight yet; but Godfather sucked. Super sucked. It was a very very very long movie that taught me one thing: ***** that movie.
- MasterPlayer, on 07/20/2008, -2/+4Did anyone say otherwise? The Dark Knight is a great movie, but I don't think it's in contention for being one of the best movies ever made, like The Godfather is.
- Intangible360, on 07/20/2008, -1/+7A movie cannot BE better than another, it is entirely subjective. You cannot prove to me that The Godfather is a better movie (I haven't seen it so I'm not saying you would necessarily have to) so please cry elsewhere.
- Sunnygurm, on 07/20/2008, -1/+0You're just saying that to be a ***** aren't you?
- Xihix, on 07/20/2008, -7/+4We'll know the official amount sometime tomorrow... I'm suspecting the movie made a little more than this projected amount.
- ChairShot83, on 07/20/2008, -11/+1If anyone gets laid this week it's because of Christian Bale in The Dark Knight.

- blacklilyninja, on 07/20/2008, -1/+6how much did it cost to make and market?
oh and they really need to start adding "tickets sold" to the income for an accurate portrayal of box office records.
that being said... movie was ***** amazing.- darkchild82, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4According to an AP article, it cost $185million (source: http://www.aol.com.au/movies/story/Dark-Knight-set ... but according to Box Office Mojo, it cost $180 million (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=darkknight ...
- dsgamer, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1well they did blow up a *****...
close! almost slipped a spoiler...
- dsgamer, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1well they did blow up a *****...
- gubatron2, on 07/21/2008, -1/+3does the cost Include killing Heath Ledger? That was probably a huge seller for the movie. It also brought in all the chick crowd to the theaters.
- kevisazombie, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Sadly, a lot of Dude Bros and Slut Hoes only went to see it cuz That "guy that killed himself is in it" ***** is so Cash.
- allengeer, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Yea but then again, tickets sold doesn't really take into account the ever increasing number of people who watch movies over a period of say 10 years, you know, population growth and all.
- darkchild82, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4According to an AP article, it cost $185million (source: http://www.aol.com.au/movies/story/Dark-Knight-set ... but according to Box Office Mojo, it cost $180 million (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=darkknight ...
- tewstep, on 07/20/2008, -4/+40in a somewhat related note - rewatched "Begins" today - I'll admit when I first saw it I had no problem with Katie Holmes, but for some reason after seeing TDK...Maggie was a much better choice.
- Phillyzero, on 07/20/2008, -14/+6I personally don't care if everyone thinks Katie is insane with the whole Cruise thing...she was a better choice than Maggie imo, and if she wasn't busy with the baby, it would've made the movie better.
I don't want to seem so shallow, but I just couldn't picture all these men going after Maggie (especially since the camera angles were not flattering to her most of the time).- D3koy, on 07/20/2008, -5/+4I'd "go after Maggie", and I get the feeling you probably would too...
- wampastompa, on 07/20/2008, -3/+22Being busy with the baby had nothing to do with it. Warners originally said they wanted a "stronger actress" to take the role for the second film, after a month or so they changed their tune to "she's busy" to save face and spare her some of the embarrassment.
If you don't understand why Maggie is considered hot I suggest you watch Secretary.
- RobotLeAwesome, on 07/20/2008, -1/+9KAtie Holmes sucked as Rachel IMHO.
- SurlyDuff, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2Obviously you've never seen Secretary...hotness
- tewstep, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2loved that movie. wrong in so many right ways...
- philipl411, on 07/21/2008, -2/+2Holmes might have sucked, but this woman looked like her face was made of wax and it was starting to melt. Unattractive doesn't come close to describing her looks. I honestly think they pick her so people wouldn't be upset when they did what they did to her.
- philipl411, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2She was and is UGLY. I mean damn ***** ugly. Her nose looked more like a pigs snout.
- tewstep, on 07/21/2008, -1/+1so how do you feel about Maggie's looks?
- Phillyzero, on 07/20/2008, -14/+6I personally don't care if everyone thinks Katie is insane with the whole Cruise thing...she was a better choice than Maggie imo, and if she wasn't busy with the baby, it would've made the movie better.

- CTRaider, on 07/20/2008, -3/+2Not bad considering different audience.
If I still had young ones around to take to Space Chimp I still would have watched TDK first and then next weekend taken them to Space Chimp.- CTRaider, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1You would have taken your kids to Space Chimp first? I'm guessing that is why I was dugg down. You're such a great parent, me not so much.
- BlaqReaper, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6Space chimps didn't come out today, it came out Friday, same as Dark Knight, Most people just didn't notice it (it sold 7 tickets at my local theater during the midnight opening).
- zephyrnug, on 07/20/2008, -0/+22half of those people snuck into TDK.
- Filipp0, on 07/21/2008, -0/+10So 3 guys and a midget?
- dsgamer, on 07/21/2008, -0/+6why would they do a midnight showing for a movie targeted a kids who are in bed a 7pm?
- SilentRamble42, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1It opened at 7th with $7.35 million
- aronnyc, on 07/20/2008, -3/+31BTW 155m is just domestic US numbers, not worldwide. My cousin in Taiwan, my brother in Hong Kong all saw it. Once the worldwide figures come in, that will just blow people away.
