I've seen it again and again, particularly on movies like this with a large fan base. They start extremely high on opening weekend and gradually decline over the course of a week or two.

        I haven't seen The Dark Knight yet, but I suspect it may deserve a place among the best movies of all time. I still guarantee you that score will drop over time though.

        Seriously, why are people digging him down? He's not saying the movie isn't good, he's just pointing out an easily observable trend.

        So no, it doesn't really matter how many votes it has received, compared to some of the older movies.

        Good things votes aren't statistically sound polls. That's why Bush was elected twice yet his actual public approval is low. Yesterday, for example, TDK had a rating of 9.7 (which I have never seen on IMDB) but when looking at the top 250 list it showed up as number 3/4 with a rating of only 9.0. While I agree with others that the rating will eventually drop, as is the case with most other films, TDK currently has a ridiculously high rating with 20,000+ votes. A lot of films on that list have less than 100,000 total votes and most of the popular ones don't pass 200,000, with a few exceptions. Just from my random, totally unscientific experiences with the IMDB voting system I believe that TDK will still high on that list.

The word 'over-hyped' has been thrown around a lot lately, but I don't think The Dark Knight is over-hyped at all. I have been waiting for this movie for over a year. Ever since the very first viral marketing hit the web last summer I have been buzzing with excitement. I was counting down the months, the weeks, the days, the hours. My hopes and expectations couldn't have been higher. And as I walked out of the theater after the midnight screening I realized that it met and exceeded all of my expectations.

        If that is not 'Best Movie Ever' material, I don't know what is. The problem is, there are a lot of people who seem to think anything released after 2000 automatically means it can never ever be the best movie ever. But why? Sure, The Godfather was good for it's time, and yeah, The Shawshank Redemption is a classic story, but why are current releases not even allowed to come near them? As soon as anyone compares a new movie with some of the 'classics' people freak out.

        It's like you place these movies on some kind of higher plane that no other movie can ever reach. And I don't think that is fair. When a great movie comes along, like the Dark Knight, even when it is absolutely amazing, it still has no chance.

        Personally, I don't rate movies based on how 'classic' they are. I rate movies based on how much I enjoy the film. And when I walked out of the Dark Knight, all I could think about was going to see it again and again. I'm still thinking about it 2 days later. I was extremely satisfied and I am not ashamed to consider it one of the greatest movies ever in my book. And neither should you. If you like it, you like it. It's time to stop defending the 'classic' films as 'The Best'. They have their place is history as amazing films, but I think it's only fair that current releases get a chance to actually be considered in Top 10 lists without being laughed at.

The movie was very good yes, but not anywhere near *that* good.

        I don't see anywhere that I even implied that the score wouldn't go down or the score was based on more than fanboy votes.

      Also, the pay-off ending (not really a spoiler: where Batman returns Dent's favor) I think is more rewarding and much more clever, than TSR's schmaltz, as much as I thoroughly enjoyed that film.

      Meanwhile, I'm finding it really hard to find any legitimate discussions over the thematic exploration in The Dark Knight. It's brilliant. It delves into the basic principles of society in such a well-conceived way that I'm pretty certain Final Year English students will be studying and writing essays about it for decades to come. Anyone agree?

Unfortunately, the IMDb forums are filled with mostly crap, though I wouldn't really expect otherwise. The Dark Knight does an excellent job of bringing all of the character arcs together and intertwining their relationships beyond the obvious. In particular, crafting Harvey Dent/Two-Face as the manifestation of the conflict between Batman and The Joker was brilliant. The ethical dilemmas faced by Batman as he pushes his own limits to stop the Joker, not to mention the great execution of a game theory-esque social experiment, add a psychological element not seen in the previous Batman films.

        Even though I, myself, rated it a 10 (it absolutely exceeded all of my expectations), I'm surprised to see it reach number one. Expect it to drop a bit in the coming weeks. As others have mentioned, WALL·E, another fantastic movie, hit number six, but has settled down at 22. Also, props to Freeman for being in two of the top three movies, not that the IMDb Top 250 is a seriously authoritative list.
