- Arth718, on 07/20/2008, -1/+25If you knew anything about the Joker's actual comic book past, you would find out that he lies about his past frequently and that he lies about it so much that he sometimes remembers it one way and then another.

- pensivewombat, on 07/20/2008, -42/+28There's always an opening weekend spike on these things. Wall-E (which was also great) made it above Casablanca for a bit I think. It will start to slide as the hype wears down.
- staffell, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1duh
- EtherGnat, on 07/20/2008, -1/+10Wow, totally unfair that you've been dugg down pensive, because you're absolutely right. I've seen it again and again, particularly on movies like this with a large fan base. They start extremely high on opening weekend and gradually decline over the course of a week or two.
I haven't seen The Dark Knight yet, but I suspect it may deserve a place among the best movies of all time. I still guarantee you that score will drop over time though.
Seriously, why are people digging him down? He's not saying the movie isn't good, he's just pointing out an easily observable trend. - reastydirtstar, on 07/20/2008, -1/+5unfortunate about your digg downery. that's what loser digg users do. they digg you down for making a completely valid point just because it goes against the grain. Like when I made one simple post about barack obama being an HIV positive pedo who abuses crack to kill the pain of his heroin and spousal abuse addictions, I got dugg down. I just don't understand diggers anymore.
- mrinsanity, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Um, you're being dugg down because that didn't belong as a reply to "Why so serious"

- Stuie2107, on 07/20/2008, -7/+0Ok, I don't think anyone has properly looked at this pic, because if you had you'd see that the votes it had received were in the 20 thousands where as the godfather and all the others were in the region of 200 or 300 thousand. They've just put the Dark Knight there because it's just come out, it's a big film and because people may be interested to see how many votes it has received, it is not actually number 1.
- sunnyb89, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2From imdb.com
The formula for calculating the Top Rated 250 Titles gives a true Bayesian estimate:
weighted rating (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C
where:
R = average for the movie (mean) = (Rating)
v = number of votes for the movie = (votes)
m = minimum votes required to be listed in the Top 250 (currently 1300)
C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 6.7)
for the Top 250, only votes from regular voters are considered.
So no, it doesn't really matter how many votes it has received, compared to some of the older movies. - Brineshrimp, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1NO ***** SHERLOCK

- DoctuhJason, on 07/20/2008, -2/+9I find your, inappropriate use of commas disturbing,.
- bonuscheese, on 07/20/2008, -6/+4I agree. IMDB's list is just about popularity. Think of all the films ever made, any Star Wars can't be in an Overall Top 10. Maybe a sci-fi or blockbuster Top 10. The trilogy was great, but we have to treat them for what they are; fun, action adventure movies.
- cheddarhead92, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3you really don't get it then. a big reason people adore the original trilogy is because of the characters. they're written as archetypes so they're easily relatable and they quickly give you the sense that you know each of the characters.
- amg503, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7C'mon! Empire Strikes Back is the BEST one. The bad guys completely dominate in that movie.

* Rottentomatoes is filled with "professional" reviewers
* imdb is filled with real people
Aside from examples like this which are caused by statistically low sample-sets, which one do you think has the best real-world ratings for the average person? And generally, that's not a bad thing, but those same "real people" still have Hellboy II rated at an 8.0. I find that more disturbing than this temporarily being #1. - Jawsh91, on 07/20/2008, -3/+6"Didn't they rate Toy Story 2 as the best movie of all time?

Nope.
Take a good look at your own link and you'll see that all of those movies are at 100%, Toy Story 2 just makes it to the top of the list because it has the highest number of reviews. - IanPR, on 07/20/2008, -1/+5Toy Story 2 was the only good Disney sequel.

- ayeroxor, on 07/20/2008, -6/+4"Majority of America voted for Bush. Polls represent public opinion. The public is not very smart, in general."
Good things votes aren't statistically sound polls. That's why Bush was elected twice yet his actual public approval is low. I love it when I hear people who dislike Bush say they're not going to vote. I mean, I dislike the Bush administration, but you have to admire the skill with which they've convinced those opposed that there's nothing they can do come voting time. Pure, concentrated skill. - jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -2/+3Honestly, I don’t admire any skill in which deceit, lies, and fear are the main backers even though a ton of idiots support those skills for our Presidential candidate.

Pulp Fiction for me didn't live up to the hype whereas Dark Knight did. That's my reason for voting it higher.

- dogfood, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5I agree. Sony makes way better casette tapes than TDK.
- Loxias, on 07/20/2008, -20/+8Well lets take a look at the top ten,
The Dark Knight (2008)
The Godfather (1972)
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
The Godfather: Part II (1974)
Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il (1966)
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Schindler's List (1993)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Casablanca (1942)
I understand IMDB isn't the best thing ever but I think they've seen a couple movies before 2000.- lukas88, on 07/20/2008, -1/+13I think the point is that the TDK fanboys haven't, even if the rest of IMDB has.
- sulf, on 07/20/2008, -3/+19Wait a month or so for a sane rating. It is obvious that fanboys were the first to watch the movie and rate it on IMDB. Wall-E also was on the first place for some time.
- Kanten, on 07/20/2008, -4/+16Except IMDb has their special "weighted" system that dictates the Top 250. It's not rabid 10 spammers that are affecting the score, it's the people who actually give legitimate ratings.
- Origin415, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8It just limits the effect. 80.8% of people gave it a 10 star review, as opposed to 57.3% for the Godfather. That is going to show no matter how you weight it.
- vinceislegend, on 07/20/2008, -2/+17It is believed that the origins of what we now know as movies appeared around 1999. This is a widely accepted theory, though obviously unprovable.
Contemporary movies, of course, surfaced in 2005, with Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins.- link293, on 07/24/2008, -0/+0Rofl... dugg
- thatsmyaibo, on 07/20/2008, -18/+13Personally I think The Godfather was one of the most overrated movies of our time. Star Wars is only what it is because of its fan base and that's what's happening with The Dark Knight. Batman has been around since the early 20th century and Chris Nolan turned it into something wonderful. Does it deserve #1?...no. But neither do half the movies on that list.
- Origin415, on 07/20/2008, -1/+8Good thing 125 movies can't be number 1.
- edwartica, on 07/20/2008, -4/+2"Of Our time." Hmmm, looking at the fact that you claim to be 25 years old, and the Godfather was made in 1972, I do not think you can claim it as your time.
- lukas88, on 07/20/2008, -16/+8Besides Ledger's performance, it was really sort of a mediocre film, tons of plot holes. Batman's voice was stupid. They didn't take advantage of Bale, who is also a good actor. Really, Batman played a supporting role in this film.
- Origin415, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1I agree, Batman was far less human in this one.
- draegloth, on 07/20/2008, -2/+7Yes, take the joker out of it and it's on par with the last batman... mediocre.
But, Ledger WAS in it, and he was amazing. We'll NEVER see another Joker like Ledger's, and that's a shame.
- arobicha, on 07/20/2008, -15/+4Considering #2 was "The Godfather", I don't think I'd take that list very seriously. Really... The godfather was 3 hours of the most directionless plot I've ever seen. It's about time somebody points out how empty a movie it was.
- openyoureyes17, on 07/20/2008, -12/+5Personally I think Citizen Kane gets more acknowledgment than it deserves. I've seen it, and I wasn't exactly wowed. I wouldn't put it in my top 500 list...let alone make it my #1.
- Lukesed, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1Lol there are five hundred movies better than Citizen Kane?
- openyoureyes17, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1there AREN'T?
- NichowA, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Some movies are important for their significance to the art of filmmaking itself. Citizen Kane was completely revolutionary at the time it was made. Yes it seems mundane now--that's because it has been endlessly copied since its release.
- Serris, on 07/20/2008, -1/+25IMDB weights its votes so that fanboys can't just spam positives. You have to be a long-time credible voter to count towards the top 250.
Sorry. A lot of proven people liked this movie. Foam at the mouth all you want. It won't stay #1, but it's earned this momentary upset. There's a reason that this didn't happen with other rabidly popular movies. - Greatn3ss, on 07/20/2008, -4/+2god i wish i could digg you up a thousand times
- HtomSirveaux, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2You're only getting older. Get used to it. In 50 years(give or take) when you're long dead, those same fanboys will complain how the newest Superman movie is ***** compared to the "original" The Dark Knight.
- mandelwink, on 07/20/2008, -4/+1Come on, people. Whenever a new, highly hyped movie comes out, it shoots up to the top of the top 250, and then things even out and it settles down somewhere near where it probably belongs. It happened with all of the Lord of the Rings movies.
Completely unworthy movies make appearances in the top 250 in their first week or 2, and drop off shortly after. Nothing new. - PeterBWiggin, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2Don't be a hater.
- peterson2k4, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7yea no movie after 2000 could possibly be better than a great movie prior to that year. NO MATTER WHAT!!!! /sarcasm
Citizen Kane is a good movie so is the Godfather but, seriously to be the film snob that acts like new movies suck because they have the misfortune of being made recently it just as bad as thinking old movies are boring. get off your high film horse and figure out that new movies can be great...or stick to watching Casablanca all day pretending that you are better that everyone else.- rlbond86, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1The movie has only been out for a few days. That's not possibly enough time for it to legitimately be called the "best movie ever."
- peterson2k4, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1your right. but, you can't dismiss TDK because it is a newer movie. thats my point. New or old, a good movie is a good movie and that's all there is too it.
- transform100, on 07/20/2008, -86/+23The matrix and star wars = only good movies made before 2000.
- jessenoob, on 07/19/2008, -88/+70It's 9.7 as of right now, and it's well deserved. Heath Ledger's final performance is one that will not be forgotten.

- JoeDiggsIt, on 07/20/2008, -2/+8Just because its the theme of the article doesn't mean it's wrong. And it is true. The Dark Knight is a good movie, but seriously....
- jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -6/+4Actually bandwagon syndrome involves many retards (like yourself) hopping on the, "this is the best movie evers" stance. Then again, that's digg for you (some loser dies and digg users line up to kiss their ***** ass and act like they were the best thing since sliced bread).
- sovietninja, on 07/20/2008, -2/+4OMG! I didn't know sliced bread was dead. RIP SLICED BREAD. You were the best type of bread ever. I remember putting delicious amounts of peanut butter, you know, the cripsy honey one, and using good old Knotts Berry Farm Strawberry Preserves, to create delicious peanut butter and jelly sammiches. You truly deserve whatever awards they give to foods posthumously.
SLICED BREAD RIP 2008. - jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -4/+2Saying “since sliced bread” has nothing to do with implying that sliced bread is dead or ever was alive. It has everything to do with saying that since sliced bread was created, you think this item (person/object/etc) was the best thing created after that point. It’s really unfortunate that I would have to explain this to anyone living in our century though.
- ayeroxor, on 07/20/2008, -3/+2'Wow, bandwagon syndrome to the max."

"You sat there and argued about sliced bread begin alive or dead (as if that had any relevance)."
Your just upset that I made you hungry for some delicious cripsy honey Skippy, spread evenly over a piece of soft, soft sliced bread, with some delicious Knotts Berry Farm Strawberry Preserves, to create delicious peanut butter and jelly sammiches.
I am not arguing anything being "alive or dead?" (if your bread is alive btw, you might want to umm make sure its bread)... I am just describing something delicious. Perhaps it is your stomach who is arguing with you, telling you, "give me a sammich".
And finally please try harder to read sarcasm... I agree with you on the bandwagon syndrome thing. First it was Heath Ledger, then it was George Carlin, and now its Sliced Bread. And according to your stomach, perhaps you should join my "sovietfail" yummy sammiches bandwagon as well. Your stomach will thank you.

- MyDiggIsBig, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2it was a fairly good movie with an amazing performance by ledger. but that is about it. I will probably see 4 movies this year that are better than Batman, but maybe not an acting job better than ledger.

- MattBot5000, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1actually, there hasn't been a single extra vote since this picture was taken
- Nosferotu, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1I wish you were better with sentence structure, but I feel your sentiment. I thought Heath Ledger's performance was MAGNIFICENT. Even if he were still alive, the Joker he portrayed is going to be one of my favorite characters from any film I've seen.
That said, the entire movie wasn't on the same level of magnificence. I loved it, but it's certainly *not* the greatest movie of all time.

- jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -9/+3Good point. It should drop down a bit over time at this point considering that none of the top 10 were even made less than 10 years ago. Realistically, IMDB wasn't even a ***** website when 5+ of these movies were released (therefore, never got this free boost of votes based on pre-/release hype).
- jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -2/+1Oh I'm sorry for pointing out the obvious fact that many of the other top 10 movies never got the free publicity/release votes because a bunch of internet fanboys decided to vote a 10 on some new ***** movie. Boohoo you ***** IMDB tards that act like your vote was some legit measure of top 10 movies over 50+ years when 23k people outvoted 1million+ others when those 23k votes came down within the past 6 months while most of the others came from years of comments.
- ayeroxor, on 07/20/2008, -2/+1pre-release hype has nothing to do with the vote results or when imdb started or any of that crap. These are people who honestly think the movie is a 10. They just happen to be the same people that bought tickets a week ago, and saw it at midnight shows. You have fans of any decent movie just like this.
They also happen to be the only ones that have voted so far. When people less-interested see the movie and vote, the vote will become more realistic as the sample-set increases. - jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2Flat out lies right there honestly ayer. When a movie is released, it has a massive amount of publicity and attention. That current level of publicity amounts to an influx of individuals who know about the movie. This leads to an influx of individuals rating said movie on various sites. Basically your claim is that if IMDB added Spiderman 3 to the mix the day of release it would get the exact same amount of publicity/attention as IMDB adding The Godfather 30 years after it was released. That’s just *****. New releases get numerous times the amount of traffic as old movies; no stats, but if you believe old movies magically get more hits than new hyped movies on the same internet voting site release date, lol@you.
It’s great that they are the only ones who have voted, but does that mean we should base our top 10 off this small sample size against years of voting? Doesn’t make sense to me, but if you want Justin Timberlake movies on top 10 because a bunch of little teen girls voted for it, good for you…
- Evilblobs, on 07/20/2008, -7/+2I think the IMDB staff are behind it, or the programmers or something.
Because when WaLL-E came out with all its superhype, it sat at around 9.5 for a while, but never made it onto the Top 250 until like a week later.
TDK was on the list with its gigantic bloated score day 1.- freefoodisgood, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3IMDB doesn't count everyone's vote when considering a film for the top 250. Yesterday, for example, TDK had a rating of 9.7 (which I have never seen on IMDB) but when looking at the top 250 list it showed up as number 3/4 with a rating of only 9.0. While I agree with others that the rating will eventually drop, as is the case with most other films, TDK currently has a ridiculously high rating with 20,000+ votes. A lot of films on that list have less than 100,000 total votes and most of the popular ones don't pass 200,000, with a few exceptions. Just from my random, totally unscientific experiences with the IMDB voting system I believe that TDK will still high on that list.
- jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -7/+1"IMDB doesn't count everyone's vote"

Honestly I think that's just total ***** as 23k people just voted to make their choice more popular than 1million+ people - BowieX, on 07/20/2008, -4/+6jameskong15 then looks at the actual submitted picture and sees the prominent italicized text "For this top 250, only votes from regular voters are considered," and then he realises he's an ass.
Because he IS one.
[citation not needed] - jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -8/+2Overall, you failed to even recognize the key argument. Just because I asked for a citation on that specific aspect doesn't mean the argument that followed was any less valid. Asking for proof of a claim is legit in any real debate, but calling people an ass for doing so is not.
Those 23k "regular voters" ARE considered in this top 250 and ultimately surpassed 1million+ other people based on their nonsense. It's absolute ***** and shows that IMDB is easily skewed towards a small number that votes in high numbers. - zulfy26, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3@jameskong15
You're still an ass. - jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -6/+1I'm an ass for asking for a citation when a claim is made, got it.
So I guess anyone who asked for proof of Bush's claims was an ass also? - ayeroxor, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3jameskong15 , anybody even remotely familiar with statistics will realize that the sample-set is not yet from a broad pool, and will chill the ***** out until more people from more diverse backgrounds have had a chance to watch the movie and vote.
Jesus. - jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -6/+1Are you slow? I asked for a citation on weather all people were included or not. It was provided, but someone decided to call me an ass for asking for such a simple citation. Now you're sitting here bitching about sample-sets which has NOTHING to do with me asking weather everyone was included or not. Try sticking to the topic at hand instead of bringing up some random ***** citation I never asked for.
Also, anyone who has taken any statistics classes will know that you don't just include some random ***** stats into a table when you can't legitimately compare them to the other samples. Sure we can wait 5 years for the samples to even out, but that doesn't mean we should include these invalid samples into our actual tables for release.
Jesus. - jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -3/+1It's so easy to press the down thumb button, but actually backing up your beliefs is not so easy. This is a simple fact behind digg thumbers. You pathetic noobs can't back your thumbs down with an argument, the end.
Reminds me of spineless democrats as a whole. - Serris, on 07/20/2008, -2/+2Dear James. You are a stupid ***** ***** who gets more steamed than Elmer Fudd. IMDB prioritizes votes so that fanboys, stupid ***** ***** like yourself, can't flood their favorite movies with 10/10's. That's why Pirates of the Caribbean never enjoyed the number 1 spot.
In review. You're a stupid ***** *****, and as for your stupid ***** ***** "citation needed" quip, we don't need to do your routine legwork for you by referencing something as well documented as that.
Please compare me to Bush, or something else to do with politics. It is extraordinarily funny. Please. PLEASE do it. - jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -2/+1Calling me a ***** was some form of legitimate argument then or…?
IMDB does not prioritize their base legitimately. If this was so it would not result in 23k people outvoting 1million+, the end. - Lukesed, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Wtf are you on about in the first place? In no way is anyone suggesting that "23k people [are] outvoting 1million+". Twenty-three thousand people have voted either approvingly or disapprovingly, and in this case the people overwhelmingly approve. The other million aren't involved because they haven't voted yet. Other movies have more votes, but they don't have as high a percentage of positive ones.
- whahaa, on 07/20/2008, -1/+22yep. my idea for a solution is simply to hold back new releases from the top 250 list until at least a month has passed.

- jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -3/+2@ayer

- Radan, on 07/20/2008, -2/+16It's not the rating itself, but the rating relative to the other movies on that list. While I agree that I haven't seen the Dark Knight yet since it hasn't premiered in Sweden yet, and while I think it will be one of the better movies released lately, I seriously doubt however, that it will be the greatest movie ever released in the history of movie making which this list now imply.
It's a shame actually what the hype and fanboyism has done to this movie. I fear that instead of going to history as one of the best superhero movies ever made, it will go as "that overrated movie everyone hyped up for no reason"- rkzda, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4How will it go like that when "that" simply is not the case. I would give it a 9.5 myself. And people need to note, they are only cosidering people who vote on movies regularly, not the people who sign up just to rate it a 10.
- Serris, on 07/20/2008, -1/+5Seconded. Fanboys don't have that power on IMDB. Do some barebones research. Whether you, or anybody else thinks it doesn't deserve the number one spot won't change the fact that the majority of regular IMDB users feel that it -does- deserve that spot.
It's 9.5 vs 9.1. That should say two things to you. First, people REALLY liked this movie. It's closer to a 10/10 than a 9/10 on average. Second, it's not going to stay that high.
Just chill. Jesus christ, the movie's been out for one ***** day, and people here are acting like somebody pissed on the original negative of the Godfather Part II. - thebuggalo, on 07/20/2008, -3/+3There is a fundamental flaw in your logic. And that is... what could possibly beat the so-called 'classics'? The word 'over-hyped' has been thrown around a lot lately, but I don't think The Dark Knight is over-hyped at all. I have been waiting for this movie for over a year. Ever since the very first viral marketing hit the web last summer I have been buzzing with excitement. I was counting down the months, the weeks, the days, the hours. My hopes and expectations couldn't have been higher. And as I walked out of the theater after the midnight screening I realized that it met and exceeded all of my expectations.
If that is not 'Best Movie Ever' material, I don't know what is. The problem is, there are a lot of people who seem to think anything released after 2000 automatically means it can never ever be the best movie ever. But why? Sure, The Godfather was good for it's time, and yeah, The Shawshank Redemption is a classic story, but why are current releases not even allowed to come near them? As soon as anyone compares a new movie with some of the 'classics' people freak out.
It's like you place these movies on some kind of higher plane that no other movie can ever reach. And I don't think that is fair. When a great movie comes along, like the Dark Knight, even when it is absolutely amazing, it still has no chance.
Personally, I don't rate movies based on how 'classic' they are. I rate movies based on how much I enjoy the film. And when I walked out of the Dark Knight, all I could think about was going to see it again and again. I'm still thinking about it 2 days later. I was extremely satisfied and I am not ashamed to consider it one of the greatest movies ever in my book. And neither should you. If you like it, you like it. It's time to stop defending the 'classic' films as 'The Best'. They have their place is history as amazing films, but I think it's only fair that current releases get a chance to actually be considered in Top 10 lists without being laughed at.
- Radan, on 07/20/2008, -2/+16It's not the rating itself, but the rating relative to the other movies on that list. While I agree that I haven't seen the Dark Knight yet since it hasn't premiered in Sweden yet, and while I think it will be one of the better movies released lately, I seriously doubt however, that it will be the greatest movie ever released in the history of movie making which this list now imply.

and so true- LopsidedZebra, on 07/20/2008, -2/+3honestly i agreed with everything except the last two points. The "Bat Pod" is easy to overlook because for the majority of its screentime it was just an odd looking motorcycle. As for Heaths performance, personally i think that reviewer said what he did to create buzz for his review.
- geneticlemon, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4It's the sign of a bad reviewer, reporter, and a writer when they start *looking* for things to hate instead of judging a film in its entirity ... not that it matters, because people really shouldn't turn to someone's ELSE'S opinions just because they don't have any valid ones of their own.
Stop ***** reading reviews and giving into the hype/de-hype, and watch the film for what it is. Come up with your own conclusions.- bobdance, on 07/20/2008, -4/+2A bad reviewer ignores the flaws and only praises the accomplishments.
- bobdance, on 07/20/2008, -5/+6It's not the first.
Most average "movie-goers" say if a movie is good or bad as a whole, over looking the negatives because of action sequences instead of story (i.e Transformers). Dark Knight had a very weak story arc as compared to Begins but was still very enjoyable. But how people are raving that this is the "greatest film ever", they really need to widen their palate.
I mean, a year ago people were saying the exact same thing with Transformers.- CoreGMRConMan, on 07/20/2008, -2/+4I mean, a year ago.... these cops and lawyers wouldn't dare mess with you. What happened?
- punkcat, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1agree with some, i can forgive the "bat pod" though, and heath was great.
part that frustrated me, the ending scene on the boats. rest of the film was well done but this final stage made me groan. i mean really why would a guy in a pressure situation commit himself to standing right in the middle of all the prisoners? he couldn't have found a more secure spot to stand around all wide eyed with a detonator? - ayeroxor, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3----SPOILER ALERT------

"sgdsfdg killing offfg Two Face. What the hell, Chris Nolan. You introduce a main villain from the Batman mythos 3/4ths of the way through your movie, give him 3 or 4 "choices" to make (something tells me he's made up his mind already) then kill him off? Really? He won't even make a bit appearance ala scarecrow in "Batman 3: Who The Hell are going to be the villains". Andy Eckhart did a (surprisingly) amazing job portraying Harvey Dent/Two face and now can't be brought back."

- ayeroxor, on 07/20/2008, -1/+5"Yeah, 23k votes is a tiny sample size, eh?"
Are you so retarded and simple-minded that it has to be spelled out for you? The only people that have voted so far are the people that bought tickets weeks in advance and waited in hour-long lines. What do you EXPECT them to vote? - NathanielJ, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1@ayeroxor - Calm yourself, "retard". I'm well-aware that movies start off with higher scores on IMDb than they end up with for the very reason you stated. That does NOT change the fact that a 9.5 weighted average out of 23,600 votes is ridiculous. The level of fanboyism going on is unprecedented and it's stupid. The movie was very good yes, but not anywhere near *that* good.
I don't see anywhere that I even implied that the score wouldn't go down or the score was based on more than fanboy votes. - NathanielJ, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Same score with over 46k votes now. How long until you guys start eating your words?

- jerematic, on 07/20/2008, -9/+32Yeah is it me, or did it sound like Bale had asthma every time he put on the Batman suit?
Overall it's a great film, but it's not as perfect as people make it out to be. There's some cheesy dialogue and laborious situations. It's nothing big enough to hold it back from what it is great though.- Sawta, on 07/20/2008, -0/+23I think that they were trying to show that Bruce Wayne would have to throw his voice every time he was around someone that he knew, so they wouldn't catch on to who he was. Or at least, that's what I told myself.
- Logrusmage, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4Kevin Conroy started the tradition of Bruce and Batman having different voices. I'm glad they kept it.
- antiorblkflag9, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5He's still trying to figure out how to act like batman. You have to remember that Batman is supposed to be an "ordinary" citizen trying to stay hidden from the world.
- mrhedges, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4Yeah, I wasn't a big fan of it, but it was obviously logical. However, Bale is very talented with his voice control. He's got a strong British accent (sorta shown in The Prestige), but he's able to hide it exceptionally well.
- adampolselli, on 07/20/2008, -5/+37Agreed. I can't stand the voice Bale uses when he's Batman. I realize Bruce is trying to disguise his voice, but damn... histrionic. By the end of the film it was almost laughable to me.

- Kto859, on 07/20/2008, -2/+34Batman's voice had to sound odd. Bruce cannot give away his identity. It is a trademark of Batman to always disguise his voice when he goes out in costume.

- vichussmith, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Yeah, this was definitely not Batman's movie. He was totally upstaged, and I think that was not really a bad thing.
- centran, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1The funny thing is that the 80s Batman was criticized because they felt Jack Nicholson's Joker upstaged Batman but now Heath Ledger's Joker is being praised for it... but isn't that the point of the Joker?

- BowieX, on 07/20/2008, -10/+44I think this movie is better than Shawshank because all the themes aren't spoonfed to us through Freeman's narration; plus, I think the themes are more important and profound than Shawshank's anyway.
Also, the pay-off ending (not really a spoiler: where Batman returns Dent's favor) I think is more rewarding and much more clever, than TSR's schmaltz, as much as I thoroughly enjoyed that film.
Meanwhile, I'm finding it really hard to find any legitimate discussions over the thematic exploration in The Dark Knight. It's brilliant. It delves into the basic principles of society in such a well-conceived way that I'm pretty certain Final Year English students will be studying and writing essays about it for decades to come. Anyone agree?- alecperkins, on 07/20/2008, -0/+12I've been looking for in depth discussion about the themes, myself. Unfortunately, the IMDb forums are filled with mostly crap, though I wouldn't really expect otherwise. The Dark Knight does an excellent job of bringing all of the character arcs together and intertwining their relationships beyond the obvious. In particular, crafting Harvey Dent/Two-Face as the manifestation of the conflict between Batman and The Joker was brilliant. The ethical dilemmas faced by Batman as he pushes his own limits to stop the Joker, not to mention the great execution of a game theory-esque social experiment, add a psychological element not seen in the previous Batman films.
Even though I, myself, rated it a 10 (it absolutely exceeded all of my expectations), I'm surprised to see it reach number one. Expect it to drop a bit in the coming weeks. As others have mentioned, WALL·E, another fantastic movie, hit number six, but has settled down at 22. Also, props to Freeman for being in two of the top three movies, not that the IMDb Top 250 is a seriously authoritative list. - tas08, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3I concur.

- mrdab, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1See the thing about imdb ratings is that just because it is number one on the list doesn't make it the best movie. It doesn't mean its the best movie at all, all it means is the almost everyone who saw the movie really liked it. All it means is that a higher % of people though it was 10 worthy than did Shawshank or Godfather.

- PrismoFillusion, on 07/20/2008, -3/+101IMDB movie scores *always* go down over time. The people most excited about the movie see it first, and review it first with the best scores. Then the second round of viewers who are less excited about it, but just see it in theaters because of all the hype see it, and review it the second best. Then when the DVD comes out a third round of people see it, who don't even like the type of movie, but figure "eh, why not?"; and they review it the worst.
Watch and see.- jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -3/+3Agreed, but still IMDB could factor this type of nonsense in to some degree. It being number 1 just seems way out of whack.
- MaxD, on 07/20/2008, -1/+6Meh! IMDB is not Digg; they don't need to factor anything into their algorithm. Their algorithm is simple and in being simple tells us a lot about what people have actually said. If it were more complicated then the results would only be telling us what the algorithm said.
- jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2I see what you're saying and respect it, but the problem with simplicity in such a case is that it can easily end up being a self-serving circle jerk that draws in more people with hype rather than acting ability/plot/etc.. I dunno about you, but when I go to IMDB top 10, I want an honest review from everyone, not just the 23k fanboys who decided on day 1 to vote 10 and push this ***** to number one over movies that have been hailed as masterpieces for over 30 years. It's ***** stupid. What's next, some ***** teenage heartthrob drama being top 10 because a bunch of little girls decided to vote it a 10?
- gfxlonghorn, on 07/20/2008, -2/+2Wall-e was in the top 3 a few weeks ago. I honestly didn't see how it made it there. At least TDK belongs in the top 50, and I don't believe Wall-e belongs anywhere near there. I mean it was an ok film, but cute doesn't make a movie great.
- jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1I agree there also. I dunno how the ***** that film made it there (well, actually I do, it used the same ***** as TDK did, woo hoo, a bunch of ***** fanboys). Top 50 for TDK for sure at least in my view though, but number 1 is absolutely an insult to me.
- whahaa, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3yep. my idea for a solution is simply to hold back new releases from the top 250 list until at least a month has passed.
- fracaso089, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1as much as i love TDK, and i ***** LOVE IT, that's actually a really good idea. Maybe just a couple weeks though...
- MOJIRA, on 07/20/2008, -2/+5There's also the people who see it RIGHT AWAY then rate it "1" because they're disappointed or the movie didn't turn out the way they expected. And there's also the Tim Burton fanboys who can't get over the fact that Batman Begins was a great movie and far better than Batman '89.
- jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2So are you saying this group in any way actually counters the fanboyism that surrounds TDK? Or...?
- jordansky, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Case in point, Wall-e. It came out at number 3, now it's down to 22.
- paulusmaximus, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Agreed. The best films are the ones to stand the test of time, not just to break the IMDB top 20 for a while. Anybody whose been a member of IMDB for more than a couple of years has seen them come and go plenty enough. I've yet to see TDK but i seriously doubt it's better than Shawshank.
- jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -3/+3Agreed, but still IMDB could factor this type of nonsense in to some degree. It being number 1 just seems way out of whack.
- DarkReign16, on 07/20/2008, -14/+3But what? Are you saying it's not deserving?
- Tanktunker, on 07/20/2008, -4/+16Are you saying it's better than The Godfather?
Have you SEEN The Godfather?- sugarazor, on 07/20/2008, -2/+5http://youtube.com/watch?v=avddxEad7u8
...I love The Money Pit - tas08, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2It's up there...
- sugarazor, on 07/20/2008, -2/+5http://youtube.com/watch?v=avddxEad7u8
- Memnochxx, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1Hey, you're a smart one.
- jameskong15, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1Yes, I am saying it does not deserve the number 1 slot.
- bduddy, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1Yes, he is. And it's not.
- Tanktunker, on 07/20/2008, -4/+16Are you saying it's better than The Godfather?
- NathanielJ, on 07/20/2008, -20/+22The marketing team for TDK are going to be able to buy a small country after all is said and done with this movie. The movie was great, yes, but it is not the perfect jaw-dropping awe-inspiring spectacle that internet hype has led everyone to believe.
- Serris, on 07/20/2008, -1/+8Yes it was. There, two meaningless opinions.
- mightymax38, on 07/20/2008, -2/+4yes it was. there, three meaningless opinions.
- Hraes, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2IMHO it was extremely close to perfect.
- peterson2k4, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3It was the best action movie ever. Not best movie.
- MAGZine, on 07/20/2008, -0/+49its only got 23K ratings.
A lot can happen when more roll around.- thatsmyaibo, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4Or when misanthrope diggers get to it.
- Fozfan33, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3well it only had around 7k yesterday and it was at #3 on the top 250 so its only going up as of now
- beerncheese, on 07/21/2008, -0/+169k and still #1
- ThickGreenPuke, on 07/23/2008, -0/+191k and still #1
- DocCochran, on 07/20/2008, -4/+9New movies often do this. It will settle somewhere between 20 and 40 on the list once it gets more votes, I imagine.
- michaelz92, on 07/20/2008, -3/+17I want to see if this movie really is THAT good
- GravyDavy, on 07/20/2008, -3/+3Yes, the movie is really THAT good... go see it... worth checking out in the theaters... IMAX if you get the chance...
- Garlik, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1The rating's up to 9.7 now
- Ligeia, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1The movie isn't THAT good. Ledger was stunning, but nothing else was particularly exceptional.
- geneticlemon, on 07/20/2008, -13/+9Why is this getting on the front page ...? I'm pretty sure when Star Wars Episode III first came out, it was listed in the top ten for the first 5 days ...
- FrenchAnarchy, on 07/20/2008, -2/+3I doubt it, Revenge of the Sith was a decent movie, while TDK is a great movie.
- mordea, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2http://web.archive.org/web/20050322014811/http://w ...
- Photar, on 07/20/2008, -23/+17Lets all go to IMDB and rate it down!
- tubbsthezombie, on 07/20/2008, -3/+4But then you'd be sinking to the exact same level as the rabid fans that go ZOMG TEN STARS and get it to number one in the first place...
- punkcat, on 07/20/2008, -2/+4are we truly no better than the fan boys then?
- joits, on 07/20/2008, -2/+1if you're not a regular voter you can't actually make any difference. you have to be voting for a little bit for your vote to count. so if you go there JUST to rate it down... go ahead, it won't make a difference. i gave it a 10 by the way... an amazing film.
- tubbsthezombie, on 07/20/2008, -16/+9*****. No way this movie is better than Seven Samurai OR 12 Angry Men.
- poprocksandsoda, on 07/20/2008, -5/+412 Angry Men is great ... I agree, but I think that you have to really take into consideration the emotional resonance of this film and how it is affecting people. The movie is an allegory to the post 9/11 world we live in and I think it makes people really feel the essence of what is being presented.
- Cleverdan77, on 07/20/2008, -28/+21I'd put it above Pulp fiction no problem.
That movie gets too much attention as it is.- ousthouse, on 07/20/2008, -5/+21Pulp Fiction is an AWESOME movie. It's also the most overrated movie ever.
- onestarleft, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Do you have a time machine or something? How does it get attention?
- bagelmaster, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2We just witnessed a miracle, and I want you to ***** acknowledge it!
- boltzmann5, on 07/20/2008, -9/+22i'd also like to add, that the second godfather movie is better than the first.
- evanucsb, on 07/20/2008, -2/+3that is the single most common completely ridiculous thing i hear when discussing the "greatest movies of all time"
- combatchuck, on 07/20/2008, -2/+2I'd also like to add that I didn't like any of the Godfather movies, because I don't like gangster movies. OMG TRENDBREAKER! DELETE COMMENT!
- evanucsb, on 07/20/2008, -2/+3that is the single most common completely ridiculous thing i hear when discussing the "greatest movies of all time"
- juggalofr33k, on 07/20/2008, -2/+5damn, i was going to post a screenshot when it was at number 3 on the list with only 3000 votes. oh well.
- xXGrimreapaXx, on 07/20/2008, -14/+27Give it time, The Godfather will take its rightful place again.
- fluxion, on 07/20/2008, -1/+6it is how it must be. but i fear much blood will be shed in the meantime
- jkleinfeld, on 07/20/2008, -8/+57I know this is a joke... no 2001: A Space Odyssey??
- bobdance, on 07/20/2008, -1/+20a sad moment in every Kubrick fan.
- Jhiaxuz, on 07/20/2008, -2/+45Being a Kubrick fan is hard work.
- punkcat, on 07/20/2008, -9/+42watching 2001 is hard work...
ducks - vaxguru, on 07/20/2008, -2/+3Haha so true.
- punkcat, on 07/20/2008, -9/+42watching 2001 is hard work...
- EatChex89, on 07/20/2008, -3/+7That movie was excellent.
- iChainsaw, on 07/20/2008, -2/+7That movie was ***** excellent...I am indeed having a sad moment.
