In Search of The Valley
readwriteweb.com — A new documentary on Silicon Valley premieres today on DVD. It was directed by Steve O'Hear, and the movie tells the story of three friends' personal journey in September of 2004 into the psyche of Silicon Valley. - porkstacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was born and raised in Sunnyvale, CA and experienced life living there with all this cool-ass technology taking shape all around me as a kid during the 1970s and 1980s. It was kind of cool being able to go take a leisurely bike ride a few miles down the road to the headquarters of Atari, Apple, National Semiconductor, Maxim Integrated Products, Verbatim, Honeywell, Intel, just to name a few. As for the business side of things I wasn't really exposed to it at that point since I was a youngin at the time, but my friends and I did our share of dumpster diving in their dumpsters (Verbatim, for example would dump 1000s of 5 1/4" floppies for every three or four defectives they found, perfect for our Atari and Apple 8-bit computers). However, a good movie to recommend would be Silicon Valley Pirates (if you haven't already seen it).

Our trip was in 2004 but the film explores the history of Silicon Valley from the 60s, 70s, and 80's - right up to the time we were there e.g. the dot-com boom and bust. We hear from the people who made it happen, including Woz, Lee Felsenstein, and many Apple alumni. The film has a section dedicated to the Home Brew Computer Club, and early Mac development.
