Max Payne Director Pissed About R-Rating
kotaku.com — Max Payne Director Pissed About R-Rating, Blames Batman Blowjob John Moore, director of the Max Payne movie adaptation, is pissed. Moore has a bone to pick with the Motion Picture Association of America for slapping his movie with an R-rating, something he tells Das Gamer he didn't seek out; Payne was supposed to be PG-13.

- roijen, on 09/05/2008, -0/+104If there is still time to reshoot the movie I think it would be better if they did go for the R rating. It seems to me that them going for PG13 means it isn't that great. They are just making a movie most people can see, if they are bored or ... something.
I really wish movies weren't marketed this way but it seems like this is the mentality.- Doctype, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6I agree, when I first read the headline I thought he was mad because the film did not get an NC-17 rating...
These things should appeal to the primary audience, the gamers and film goers who are out to see one their favorite stories portrayed accurately without censorship. - ZeeZee2k, on 09/06/2008, -0/+7Oh well, it's still not too late to insert some nude scenes. The game did it, remember Mona?
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/9653/mona2nu0.j ... - shaka999, on 09/06/2008, -10/+2This mentality drives me nuts. Why on earth you think that someone needs to go for an R rating to make a good film is beyond me. More often than not an R rating means the director lacks the creativity to make a good movie.
The best films leave something to the imagination.- Scaryclouds, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6I don't think such an judgment is fair to pass (R rated movies lack creativity). Some excellent films are rated R, Godfather Part 2, The Departed, Terminator 2, just to name a few.
- roijen, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5I don't know. Your "leaving to the imagination" line sounds like an empty talking point.
Maybe I don't understand what you are trying to get at. I will admit, when I read a book and the author says something like "He swore" it is sometimes better than the author actually having the character say the obscenity. But only because this may upset the pacing.
Not limiting to PG13 gives writers more tools to work with. It allows for more thorough story telling. This doesn't mean that Rs are always better than PG13s, however all things being equal an R has a greater chance of being a greater film.
The case with this film it seems is that the director knows it isn't that good and it can't afford to have a limited audience. - bluezinc, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5You're an idiot.
An R rating is no indication of a lack of creativity. It doesn't indicate anything other than the movie has swear words and/or nudity.
An R rating, actually, means that the director/writer/producer wasn't constrained by a PG-13 rating. They weren't self-censoring or toning down theor story to fit within PG-13 guidelines.
You're a philistine if you think that R has anything to do with creativity. - shaka999, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1There have been plenty of great R movies. What I said is "more often than not". I stand by this. Why spend time making a great movie when you can throw in a little nudity and a ton of swearing and most the high school kids will go see it?
- bluezinc, on 09/06/2008, -0/+10***** that director for trying to make Max Payne PG-13 in the first place, ***** him for not knowing a god damn thing about Max Payne.
- rpgmaker, on 09/06/2008, -1/+2I knew from the first trailer that the movie was going to suck. Mark my ***** words.
- Blandyman, on 09/07/2008, -0/+6Marky Mark my ***** words.
- KMye, on 09/06/2008, -3/+3The average PG-13 movie makes multiples of the average R movie. You can hate the reality, and hate the MPAA's whole method, but it's tough to by angry with dirctors/producers/investors for shooting for a PG-13.
- ParaSwarm, on 09/06/2008, -4/+2There's not even that interesting of a plot to the game. It was just an original game because it was one of the first (if not the first) to use bullet-time and slow down effects. I don't know why people are excited over this.
- Doctype, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6I agree, when I first read the headline I thought he was mad because the film did not get an NC-17 rating...
- RoboDonut, on 09/05/2008, -0/+128I don't see what the big deal is. The games were rated M, if I recall correctly.
Anyone who was old enough to play those games when they came out is definitely old enough to watch an R-rated movie now.- lastrite, on 09/06/2008, -0/+26$$$.
- crichton101, on 09/06/2008, -1/+39Matrix was a huge movie that made alot of money and it was rated R.
- Cougarcat, on 09/06/2008, -1/+17Yes, but The Matrix was good.
- bluezinc, on 09/06/2008, -3/+1Yeah, but it was also the Matrix. You can't just equate the Matrix with another movie because they both have an R rating.
- prophetpimp, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1And the matrix sequels came with a PG13 and they sucked Blue Whale Sized Balls. R >>>>>> PG13.
- jholden42, on 09/06/2008, -1/+32Yeah, that's retarded. Making a PG-13 movie based on M-rated games is asinine.
- aftern9ne, on 09/06/2008, -3/+4So they should limit themselves to appealing to people who have played the game only?
- skunkman62, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3i dont know. what do you think?
- Lukesed, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Sounds like a great way not to make any money. Though Max Payne may be one of the greatest games ever, if you go up to random people off the street none of them will be aware of it. You need a game like Halo to sell a movie purely on the name.
- belebih, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3If they want to appeal to the general public who don't know the game they should make a movie that's not related to the it. Not saying it has to faithful to the game in every single detail, but, as has always been the case, films that stray too far from the source material in order to appeal to bigger markets full of cash pretty much fail both critically and financially.
- Harelin, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2The point is not that it's R-Rated necessarily, but that it was designed to be PG-13 but was still slapped with R. If they knew this was inevitably going to happen anyway, they could have gotten away with a lot more content-wise. Now a portion of the market is being cut out for very little reason.
- lastrite, on 09/06/2008, -0/+26$$$.
- crichton101, on 09/06/2008, -0/+156Anyone who has played Max Payne knows that a Max Payne movie SHOULD be rated R. Its a freaking John Woo movie in video game form.
- scotttech1, on 09/06/2008, -1/+21and this would be a John Woo Movie in Video Game Form in Movie form...? I know you know that I know you know what I am thinking...you know?
- Lukesed, on 09/06/2008, -1/+3If John Woo's classics came out today they would be PG-13.
- fpaudon, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5@Lukesed
Yeah, except for all the scenes where people are getting shot. Which would be half of the film. - ObieOnce, on 09/07/2008, -1/+2Because you can't shoot people in a PG-13 movie...
- Blandyman, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2As much shooting as John Woo's films have, there's not enough to warrant an R-rating in them.
I think the reason Max Payne got an R is probably because of some sex-related content, which the MPAA is super tight-assed about.
I say this without reading the article... - staticneuron, on 09/08/2008, -0/+1Umm, the gracious amounts of blood and gore that comes from shooting someone would also be the case.
Either you have never seen a Woo film or what.
"All you have to do to make an R-rated film PG-13 is to change the color of blood from red to black (or just remove the blood from a scene that should be bloody as hell), and show full nudity as long as you just barely obscure nipples and genitalia.
Look at the film Van Helsing for example. You had scenes where an arm is ripped off a character and there is no blood. Another character falls from a 20 story building, the camera shows him lying in the street, and he looks like he tripped over a shoelace. His head should have looked like an exploded melon. As far as nudity, the female vampires were buck-naked, but had breasts devoid of nipples. Other than that, there was nothing left to the imagination."
In Woo films you mainly see a level of realism (with the exception of the uber lame MI:2) that is associated with doing violent acts. People say that they are scared that R films will desensitize children to violence. I think its the other way around. In an R film, normally the consequences of doing such violent actions are laid out out clearly. In other films they take it to the level of fantasy, showing puffs of smoke erupting from a person when shot or characters going through some ridiculous stuff without showing anything. Or... they can take the Dark knight route..... and show nothing at all (yea for quick cuts and edits.

- Blandyman, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1The films practically done, I don't think they scheduled much for reshoots, assuming it was gonna be a quick write, film, edit, release deal and that they weren't gonna be arguing over their rating.
- MrM4nager, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1I'm glad it got the R rating, now they go crazy with it.
- valleyvideo, on 09/06/2008, -4/+78I'm still shocked that Dark Knight got a PG-13.

- brenthals, on 09/06/2008, -0/+19I've said the same thing, that movie should've been an R. Ratings are the most unpredictable things ever.....look at Jaws (PG), the original Planet of the Apes (G). Whatever.
Seriously, see the film "This Film is not yet Rated", it shows some insight into the idiocy and hypocritical elements these ratings systems really are.- rabuksak, on 09/06/2008, -2/+6I concur. "This Film is not yet Rated" is a great look into the ridiculousness that is our American rating system.
Any and every regular moviegoer should see it. - btschul, on 09/06/2008, -1/+11Enjoy: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-559517494 ...
- ArkRaider1936, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1Those movies were before the PG-13 rating, which was created to shelter kids from violence/gore in movies. For info and history on the PG-13 rating: http://www.hometheaterinfo.com/mpaa.htm
- rabuksak, on 09/06/2008, -2/+6I concur. "This Film is not yet Rated" is a great look into the ridiculousness that is our American rating system.
- morphinapg, on 09/06/2008, -0/+9you can't really count the old movies as the ratings were much different back then, but I don't think Dark Knight earned an R, as nearly all the violence was off screen. Maybe if there was PG-15 or something it would have been more appropriate
- kyle212, on 09/06/2008, -1/+7Id of preffered the dark knight to be a R, then it could of been even darker
- Blandyman, on 09/07/2008, -2/+3Next time, ask Nolan to just have black tarps installed over projectors so all you do is hear the film. Then it'll be as dark as you can handle it.
- mywhitenoise, on 09/06/2008, -0/+14The Dark Knight was pretty violent, but they were careful about it. Did you see ANY blood at all in the film?
- stubadub, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6A lot of the most graphic stuff was set up and happened off camera, or from an angle where it couldn't be seen. The pencil thing was set up, but there was no blood or shots of any wounds. When he is holding the knife in Gamble's mouth, it cuts away to reaction shots by Gamble's men. Really, the only thing close is Two-Face's face.
The movie was intense, but the violence was such that it was easy for Warner Brothers to get a PG-13. - Smiley09, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Dark Knight was rated PG here, someone probably got fired for that.

- j3rm1981, on 09/06/2008, -0/+99Um...it was an "M" game. It should be an "R" film.
C'mon, Hollywood. You have an adult audience too. Quit watering ***** down just because you want to rake in cash and make a good ***** film for a change.
If a film is good enough to stand on its own story and marketing, it shouldn't need a lower rating to help bring in the $.- craterburnsu, on 09/06/2008, -0/+17It isn't like an R rating stops kids from going. Older siblings and parents get them in all the time. I just saw College the other night and the front row of the theater was all like 12 year olds.
- rkzda, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2The R rating limits advertisement though. There have been several R rated movies that came out that I knew nothing about before I saw the poster at the theater.
- ArkRaider1936, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1I'm sorry you paid to see College in the theater.
- olik, on 09/06/2008, -3/+1The game's rating has absolutely nothing to do with the rating the movie deserved.

- Nekura20x6, on 09/06/2008, -0/+57Is it just me, or does it seem ridiculous that you can have as much violence as you want in a film, but show a little skin or use the "F" word to much and suddenly you're wrestling with an R rating. The MPAA has become a complete joke and is out of touch with their viewing audience. Also - why they get to happily regulate themselves while lawmakers go apoplectic over video games is another mystery.
- Jhiaxuz, on 09/06/2008, -0/+8What I have a hard time grasping is when I seen the commercial for "Everybody Wants to be Italian" and thought to myself "Ok, this looks like Meet the Parents or some other generic family comedy" and it ended with "Rated R". I was perplexed. Then, you see The Dark Knight get PG-PG-13 ratings and you get confused.
You know things are ***** up when killing someone gets a PG or PG-13 rating and romance comedies get R Rating.
- BinderGang, on 09/06/2008, -0/+20What sucks is that this movie is probably barely an R rated film if they were shooting for a PG-13 rating. If you're going to get an R rating, you mine as well go all out. RESHOOT!

- Jhiaxuz, on 09/06/2008, -3/+2The trailer for this movie looked dumb as hell anyway.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 09/06/2008, -1/+1it's how the studios make money.
- paranoidfox, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1You're blaming the wrong people. Blame the MPAA. They're the ones who set the standards and ratings. If we had no ratings like this, films could do whatever they wanted without fear of not being shown in theaters or public alienation. The movie studios need to appease the MPAA and thus the "general public" to make money.
- staticneuron, on 09/08/2008, -1/+1It's how the studios make money?... Thats funny because I have watch many more overseas movies than local ones. Other countries don't feel the need to treat their population like they are ALL children or that their children cannot handle adult subjects.
Its mainly a problem in the US where it makes parenting easier if things don't have to be explained until later.
- Saitekc, on 09/06/2008, -0/+34***** the MPAA, they're all 40 year old mothers who would probably ban video games if they were on the ESRB rating board.

- kowcun, on 09/06/2008, -0/+9Max Payne director is a girly man.
- PosedMagnet, on 09/06/2008, -1/+8Um, why would you make an action movie PG-13?
Same rules apply to horror movies. If any of those two genres ever consider coming out with a PG-13 flick, it will suck.
Examples: Live Free or Die Hard, Fast and the Furious, The Ring... ugh.- shadeOfGrey, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Exactly. The movie will do better with an R rating. I'm less likely to go see it now that I know the director toned it down and pulled his punches for a pg-13.
- solidus636, on 09/06/2008, -1/+4I've considered 'PG-13' horrors to be scarier than 'R' rated ones.
- Slackdragon, on 09/07/2008, -1/+4That's because directors with "no holds barred" pallets to work with have no real sense of psychological terror a lot of times. I've found old black and white 1940's horror films more frightening at times than modern squirm in your seat splatterfests.
40 gallons of blood and chunks of ripping flesh isn't necessarily scarier than masterfully cued music, well played acting, suspenseful lighting, etc.
- Slackdragon, on 09/07/2008, -1/+4That's because directors with "no holds barred" pallets to work with have no real sense of psychological terror a lot of times. I've found old black and white 1940's horror films more frightening at times than modern squirm in your seat splatterfests.
- boneit, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Aren't all comic and game based movies coming in as PG13 these days? They want bums on seats, they want the money, not the art or adult level entertainment. Unless it's a splat gore-fest, it would appear that we're going to have to suffer PG13 targeting.
- SanyaG, on 09/06/2008, -3/+1rated r or not... many little children whos parents dont watch them every second of their life... will still get in and watch it.. i mean how hard is it for a kid to get into an r-rated move.. seriously
- belebih, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1Even though this is true, it only means that parents need to be more responsible and involved in their kids' lives, not that film makers should water down their films because kids will still get in and watch them. All of this "think of the children" ***** is part of what is both keeping the entertainment industry in the ***** and hurting kids in the long run since parents are told it's ok to just shrug off their responsibility on others.
- btschul, on 09/06/2008, -1/+4The MPAA needs to be dismantled and replaced with a ratings board with accountability and transparency and a set standard for ratings based on surveys answered by the American viewing public. The current ratings board is a ***** joke. It's a bunch of soccer moms who have been given the power to push their particular brand of morality and right and wrong on the entire American population. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-559517494 ...
- craterburnsu, on 09/06/2008, -1/+6Should have pushed the limit and made it NC-17. I love NC-17 just for the fact that there are no children in the theater.
- o0dhacker0o, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4I've never even seen one listed at any of the major theaters..
- craterburnsu, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3That is because everyone avoids NC-17, which i heard is because they prohibit advertisement on all media major sources. So basically you're screwed if you get NC-17 and have no way to tell people about it. I don't know if that is true or not.
- du4l1ty, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1I saw one commercial for an NC-17 movie before. But only once.
- Blandyman, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2NC-17 advertisement is not prohibited on cable television past the "late-night" mark when the FCC stops caring about what you do. That's why FX has shows like nip/tuck or The Shield that air after 10 and say ***** and show ***** now and again, or Comedy Central shows their secret stash with the whole movie uncensored.
I once saw an ad on Comedy Central late at night (I'm talking 2 or 3AM) for the John Waters film that came out a few years ago, with Johnny Knoxville. I saw the commercial three times that night, and two times the next night. Never saw it again after that.

- junskey, on 09/06/2008, -0/+7the fact that they went for a PG-13 rating probably means the movies gonna be a really watered down max payne..hope it doesnt suck :
- T8erT0T, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6Lol, how the hell do you make Max Payne film and hope or try for anything less than an R rating? This is what is wrong with directors' rationale --> let us dilute and pussify the original gritty content in which we are to adapt in order to appeal to a mass audience in hopes of bigger sales.
While we're at it, let's go ahead and do A Clockwork Orange for the kids, and we'll animate it and put in some witty humor to entertain parents. Or let's do a Punisher sequel but call him the "Time-Out Giver" so things aren't so crass.

- elitexero, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6The movie is based on a renegade cop chasing down the scum crooks of the city, and then to the mob bosses who brutally murdered his family while being whacked out on/spreading the newest meth-like drug craze. That sounds a little harder than Dora the Explorer, so I don't know what the hell the director's complaining about.
- artfiend77, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4I think he knows his movie is going to suck, so he's trying to find excuses why it won't sell many tickets.
- rocknrollninja, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4sounds like the punisher.
- abajaj2280, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Argh! ANGER
- TheAmazingBob, on 09/06/2008, -0/+12Dugg for the phrase "Blames Batman Blowjob"
- slapded, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6MPAA is full of soccer mom retards.
- molebee, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Kids are going to sneak into the theater anyways. So what's the point?
- saegiru, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4F the MPAA anyway. Ratings shouldn't be a basis for a movie doing well anyway. How often do people specifically wait for UNRATED versions of movies to come out? ALL THE TIME. The rating system needs to just go away. Theaters are pretty much dead to me regardless. I have my hi def home theater to enjoy, why would I want to go to a movie and watch it with a bunch of loud morons?
- AzraDarkness, on 09/06/2008, -0/+0I hate kids in the theater anyway they are too noisy and throw popcorn around..
- rushiku, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1How do you spell 'free advertising'?...er...oh.
- MarrowMan, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1the movie has demons instead of mafia...what???
- D2Much, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1good times on max payne on my grandmas old dell
- Track3r, on 09/06/2008, -1/+1I don't care what they give it. I'm still going to see it.
- LoveWidescreen, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3The link to the REAL article. (Why is this so difficult for some people???)
http://www.dasgamer.com/max-payne-director-john-mo ... - InRaged, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1If anyone has seen the Max Payne trailer- can you agree that this movie has so little to do with what actually went on in the original game as to be laughable? I mean maybe I'm wrong- it HAS been a while since I played- but wtf actual valkyries flying around? God vs. the Devil ***** going on? I do remember the game involving religion and the occult, but I do not remember it being a "harder" version of Constantine. w-t-f?
- rheaume, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1People want to make money. You want to make money. Moneymoneymoney
- Shakermaker, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4The MPAA is, and always has been, censorship at work in America.
- swankboy, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Any Adam Carolla fans in here will know the same thing happened to him with his movie, The Hammer, for a single F-bomb. No nudity, no violence (other than some boxing) and no other real sexual content. Total BS.
- completerobot, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1>Adam Carolla fans
- DivisibleByZero, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1I read that as "Major Payne" at first. I hope nobody in Hollywood gets the same idea and decides it's a good candidate for a remake...
- Gotar, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1I'd say the MPAA actually did him a favor. His movie seems cooler now that it's R instead of PG-13, regardless of actual said coolness.
- LemonChicken, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2The last movies he directed were The Omen, Flight of the Phoenix, and Behind Enemy Lines.
Uhoh. - noahsawyer, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4This Film is Not Yet Rated (movie) is a very interesting critique of the MPAA rating system.
- mayhemchaos, on 09/07/2008, -2/+1by interesting you mean ultraliberal, one side critique. Though, I did agree with SOME parts of it.
- noahsawyer, on 09/08/2008, -0/+2No, I don't mean ultra-liberal. It was actually quite fair and exposed the inconsistencies and biases of the MPAA rating board that is supposed to "represent the average American."
In the extra footage the producer said something I agree with: instead of rating, give a detailed description of the movie's content so that moviegoers can decide for themselves.

- RyanPatrick, on 09/06/2008, -1/+2Who gives a *****! Video game movies suck large *****.
- mbonzo531, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Over time ratings are much harsher. Spaceballs, which even dropped the F bomb only received a PG in 1987. Ratings have always been unreliable.
- bonjourmr, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5I hope its noir!
- horrorshowchi, on 09/06/2008, -1/+0Yes, we all want it to be R! THE POINT IS that the director already shot the movie for PG-13, which means there is less strong language and blood squibs and greatly reduced sex... And now they are sticking him with a higher rating for something that isn't even deserved.
- Kwipper, on 09/07/2008, -0/+1.... so?
- AllButOneDay, on 09/07/2008, -0/+2Really? I'm pissed because ***** directors keep ruining classic video games with derivative, awful adaptations.
