Must See: Flash Of Genius Trailer watch!
apple.com — Corporations have time, money, and power on their side. All Bob Kearns had was the truth. Based on a true story, starring Greg Kinnear and Lauren Graham, revolves around a college professor and how his innovative idea is stolen by a big corporation without giving him compensation for it and how he fights back.

As you wish.
- tidu, on 07/24/2008, -5/+5Half the trailers on apple.com/trailers are movies that have limited release and then fizzle out. And they're the good ones, while all the super hero movies and epic/disaster/scary movies slide right through.

- Pusod, on 07/23/2008, -4/+119Screw that 30 million dollar offer! I just want to be recognized in the history books as being the inventor of the intermittent windshield wiper! Let's go to trial!
/butthole starts to quiver.- sockpuppets, on 07/24/2008, -0/+43As the inventor of toilet paper I think I'm uniquely qualified to help you out.
- RRJackson, on 07/24/2008, -4/+3He actually didn't just want to be recognized as the inventor. He wanted to be the vendor that manufactured the part for all the American auto manufacturers. They must have thought he was clinically insane. Well...of course, then it became obvious that he was clinically insane.
- mojoface, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3With 30 million dollars I could start my own business, send my kids' kids to college, buy a Ferrari, a mansion, and a yacht. You'd be a fool not to take the money.
- ekmather, on 07/25/2008, -2/+1hahaha "butthole starts to quiver." Has the chocolate star fish become scared?
- shto, on 07/23/2008, -39/+122WOW...they made a film about a man and his windshield wipers idea...Hollywood must be desperate for movie ideas.
- j1a1g1, on 07/24/2008, -1/+3it kinda reminds me of the hoax
- sockpuppets, on 07/24/2008, -1/+20Wait for the sequel, it's called "Pleather."
- PixelMagic, on 07/24/2008, -6/+9It's about inspiring people. And this movie inspires me to wipe....my ass.
- directedition, on 07/24/2008, -3/+72I think people are missing the point that's being advertised. There are hundreds of stories like this. Like the inventor of the optical disc, he didn't receive a penny for his invention. The swiffer? Same story. The windshield wiper was chosen specifically because it was mundane and not something you really think about.
Why does it matter who invented the CD, the swiffer, or the intermittent windshield wiper? It's like Steve Wiebe in King of Kong. It's an average guy with an average life who just wants recognition for the one great thing he ever did. It seems so little and insignificant, but it's what matters to them.- nextyoyoma, on 07/24/2008, -1/+20wish I could digg this over and over. well said.
- AgmLauncher, on 07/24/2008, -6/+1Yeah desperate indeed. That's why The Dark Knight just broke a bunch of records?
- Soave, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4It's because it's the story of an average guy with a non-life-changing invention. It's much more realistic and almost 'close to home.'
- OpaqueMurdock, on 07/24/2008, -1/+3Yeah, I do believe you are missing the point and may never see it... If you did something that changed the world even in some small way and a huge cooperation stole it from you, would you have the guts to stand up to them? Would you have the stamina and sense of pride to risk your reputation and personal comfort so that the world would know that they are thieves?
We are starting to forget something very important as a culture I think... films like this attempt to remind us. Its not to late... we don't have to sell out completely. - Trav3133, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Kind of like this movie IMO http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tucker:_The_Man_and_H ...

Thankyou so much. - Vazel, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1You may not like African-Americans but there's no need to be so crass about it. Tolerance is the key to progress.
- praetoriansword, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3Did you invent that?
- quacker912, on 07/24/2008, -20/+9Windshield wipers?...I mean, come on, can't they think of better movie ideas?
- Neiby, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4No, this is about a guy who had the "genius" idea to add a variable capacitor to a circuit. No one had ever thought of that before!
- tacojohn48, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1When watching the trailer I thought whats the big deal there are at least a dozen ways to do that with a microcontroller. Then I realized it was a big deal at the time.
- Neiby, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4No, this is about a guy who had the "genius" idea to add a variable capacitor to a circuit. No one had ever thought of that before!
- ocop, on 07/24/2008, -31/+9Buried for only being in quicktime... sigh.
- MaynardsTool, on 07/24/2008, -3/+8Buried for being asinine.
- over9k, on 07/24/2008, -5/+0I use quicktime alternative. Then I download the hidef videos and the downloaders asks me if I want to rename it to .hdmov which I do because it allows me to use the faster CoreAVC decoder to decode rather than the quicktime one.
- Seidoger, on 07/24/2008, -2/+2Yeah that's bad.
It should have been in OpenVideo from OpenSoftware, delivered using OpenDelivery, on OpenOS.- Murdats, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1no just something that would let me watch it full screen, not 3" screen.
- AlexWiggy, on 07/24/2008, -19/+32Another film, that is quite blatantly, trying too hard.
- BobSutan, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5It insists upon itself.
- Tanktunker, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1What does that even mean?
- BobSutan, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1Family Guy reference.
- bitcloud, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3"one man had a dream... every man, woman and child shall have an intermittent windshield wiper... regardless of race... regardless of creed... one man had hope."
- OpaqueMurdock, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1You could have a point there... heh
- BobSutan, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5It insists upon itself.
- fuzzmeister, on 07/24/2008, -8/+161People will complain about this being "a movie about windshield wipers", but I think that the true story of one inventor vs. a huge corporation has the potential to be very interesting. Definitely more original than 99% of the stuff that comes out of Hollywood.
- OffPiste, on 07/24/2008, -1/+44Maybe not an Inventor against a major corporation but the plot of the little guy going against great odds is highly used. The little righteous guy against the evil big corporation is also widely used.
- fuzzmeister, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4Well of course the David vs. Goliath story is used a lot. This would be interesting because it is grounded in reality (theoretically, of course).
- OpaqueMurdock, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3"the plot of the little guy going against great odds is highly used"
Well yeah, its sort of the basis of great many stories when you break it down to that level... I suppose you didn't care for that one film about that young guy from tatooine that was up against great odds fighting the evil empire either. : )
- Scheissen, on 07/24/2008, -1/+9Because no major or minor Hollywood studio has ever 'stolen' an idea before.
- klick37, on 07/24/2008, -2/+12More original? It's based on a true story.
- fuzzmeister, on 07/24/2008, -2/+5I could have said "more unique", but that would have been grammatically incorrect. How about "more unusual"?
- allenu, on 07/24/2008, -2/+2Unfortunately, it's only "based" on a true story. I'm sure they've fictionalized the hell out of the actual events to make it more interesting than it actually is. Anyway, I'm with OffPiste, this is the same old story and honestly I'm tired of these cliched trailers.
- novemberwhiskey, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2So you'd rather sit through two hours of lawyers filing legal documents?
- radsprack, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1@novemberwhiskey
Are you saying you wouldn't?
- Disinterested, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1hey at least it's not a bad sequel *cough* spiderman 3 *cough*
- shto, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Yeah, but that's what half of the movies in Hollywood are about: some small person, a nobody, an underdog that battles against all odds, takes on the biggest challenges (to whom other people would say no, or would give in fast) to prove something, goes through a very difficult period of time fighting and eventually wins. The only whim of originality in this is that it says "Based on a true story" next to the title.
- daebat, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1i agree... this looks like an awesome movie.
- OffPiste, on 07/24/2008, -1/+44Maybe not an Inventor against a major corporation but the plot of the little guy going against great odds is highly used. The little righteous guy against the evil big corporation is also widely used.
- MaynardsTool, on 07/24/2008, -1/+21I would just like to point out that while the ratings board takes many things into consideration when giving a movie a rating... nudity, violence, sexuality, language... I was not aware that something could get a higher rating for "depictions of tobacco consumption". I bet this movie gets a rating of at least PG for properly depicting that people (in this case REAL people) smoked cigarettes and cigars in the 60's.
Not saying it's right or wrong... just pointing out how far we've come.- thorstrongstone, on 07/24/2008, -0/+11Or how far we have fallen.
- AuriniDMJ, on 07/24/2008, -3/+1Whether or not you smoke is your business; whether or not you are allowed to see someone else smoke? The Censor's business. Yeah, I'm happy with that arrangement.
- a1cd, on 07/24/2008, -6/+17More Product Placement please..
- praisethelard, on 07/24/2008, -0/+13I don't think Ford would be too happy with this product placement.

- tacojohn48, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2The point of his post was that Ford stole the guy's ideal, he can steal the movie.
- praetoriansword, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2tacojohn: you're giving him too much credit.

- sagat, on 07/24/2008, -13/+39***** Quicktime, current bane of my existance replacing Realplayer which haunted me for years.
- waylandchin, on 07/24/2008, -10/+4i prefer Quicktime actually, it's the only one that would play in my iPhone, I hate it when I surf on to a video on my iphone and it's ***** flash and won't play.

- Murdats, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4you it sucks when your mobile device cant play flash.
oh wait, I just have to install flash on my windows mobile device and its all good.
- bitcloud, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1theres a program called "quicktime alternative"
the project might have been merged with "media player classic".. not sure though... - theutopian, on 07/24/2008, -4/+3Oh man they don't support your ***** preferred video format. Someone stop the presses!
If Hollywood had to put their trailers out in every video format that has ever been created and used by more than two people, they wouldn't release movie trailers at all.
Quicktime is pretty much the standard for movie trailers. Deal with it.
- waylandchin, on 07/24/2008, -10/+4i prefer Quicktime actually, it's the only one that would play in my iPhone, I hate it when I surf on to a video on my iphone and it's ***** flash and won't play.

- Misogyny, on 07/24/2008, -3/+49I find it difficult to believe that a bunch of engineers couldn't figure out how to make an intermittent wiper on their own.
- ryanize, on 07/24/2008, -0/+22I was thinking the same thing. They can design an entire car, but a wiper that has various speeds....seems like something you give to the interns.
- Neiby, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Yeah. I'm sure those engineers had never ever heard of a variable capacitor. They're just so uncommon.
- tucsonalama, on 07/24/2008, -3/+0...yeah, in the trailer the dude takes uses what was at that time considered High Tech, a ***** blender.
- NOFXY, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5maybe its not that they couldn't figure it out but he realized cars were missing something. but what do i know.
- RRJackson, on 07/24/2008, -0/+6Back the cars had vacuum driven wipers, though. That stuff was all designed by mechanical engineers. None of them apparently ever considered using a little DC motor to drive the wipers. Nah, far more practical to take a vacuum tap off the manifold. Maybe add a vacuum booster is there's a problem with consistent speed under acceleration. An EE woulda walked in there and started laughing his ass off.
- thunde, on 07/24/2008, -3/+0I thought that was the point of the movie. They figured out how to do it on their own but they did not give credit to the inventor.
- praetoriansword, on 07/24/2008, -1/+3In the movie they stole his idea. Though in the actual story I wouldn't be surprised if that's how it went down.
- semvhu, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2You have to note that this was in the 60's, not present day. Electronics parts we take for granted today like PICs and timers either did not exist or were not nearly as easy to come by.
- ryanize, on 07/24/2008, -0/+22I was thinking the same thing. They can design an entire car, but a wiper that has various speeds....seems like something you give to the interns.

- Mahoney07, on 07/24/2008, -1/+7They keep losing money. They would lose even more if they didn't ship jobs overseas
- tacojohn48, on 07/24/2008, -0/+8You forgot to thank the unions for making it so much more cost effective.
- AuriniDMJ, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I just hate it when someone else offers to do the same work as me for less money... the government should get involved, start telling these owners what for.
- kolinkoolface2, on 07/24/2008, -1/+1or tell the government not to place so many regulations on us. I am not calling for government intervention at all idiot. I am simply telling the big three if they think we are going to buy their cars, they have another thing coming because none of us in michigan can afford them because guess what, our whole economy is attached to the big 3. Smaller companies across the state are feeders off the automotive and they are all going under.... As for unions, they are a terrible idea cause they hurt they demand everything for doing nothing. This is nothing new...
"They would lose more money if they didn't use foreign labor..."
not true, they need to not offer so many ***** benefits to retirees. They really expect to give out all these benefits to all employees for life.... partially all of the unions part.... but you can't do this and expect to make a lot of money. I think Gm will come back and so will ford, it's just going to be rough and i guess we will have to ride it out. We always do in michigan. - megarobotguy, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1Most American automobile companies are either assembled in the US, Canada or Mexico. Parts are cheaper to manufacture else where but they all are assembled in or close by to America. Jobs are being cut in America because sales are low. Ford just lost 8.7B in Q2 (mostly in N. America) compared to Europe with a $582m profit. The days of American automobile manufactures getting buy selling trucks are coming to a end. They should focus on building small to medium size cars like they have been doing overseas.

Ok, I lied. - tsiros, on 07/24/2008, -6/+1have you noticed, like, in cartoons, sylvester vs tweety, coyote vs meep meep, where the predator never catches its pray? it is for comedic effect, because, in reality, this never happens. it wouldn't be funny or interesting if in every episode, sylvester ate tweety...
apply same logic in this situation and you will too enjoy the irony. (it is multilayered too. see, the studios producing these movies are one of the megacorps depicted in the movie... maybe this particular movie is an indy movie, which i doubt, but i'm willing to bet you're catching my drift...)- Neiby, on 07/24/2008, -0/+9Did you just call The Roadrunner "meep meep"??

- sakuraz, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1that's.....GOSH......too big of a spoiler dude.
- Scheissen, on 07/24/2008, -1/+25"Hey motor companies, I'm going to show you detail plans of my windshield wiper before you even pay me."
- GrammerPants, on 07/24/2008, -2/+1It was a different time then. There are a lot of stories like this over the years.
- megarobotguy, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1What's true back then still remains true today. The greed of corporations will always be stronger than moral honesty and values when it comes to stepping on the little guy.
- RRJackson, on 07/24/2008, -1/+9"Feel free to take my prototype and examine it privately at your leisure. I'm sure you'll be square with me at the end of the day."

- Atomixor, on 07/24/2008, -4/+2Am I the only one who hates intermittent windshield wipers? It always gets too wet before the blades go by again, and I need to set them to regular mode.
I guess they'll come in really handy for those times when it's raining in spurts every 3 seconds.- tacojohn48, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1They should make a wiper with a sensor to detect water on the windshield and let it go automatically. Then Ford won't need to steal his design.
- electricdragon, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2They already have those.

- elonkytroot, on 07/24/2008, -7/+2OMG a windshield wiper. That deserves an entire movie.
- gnarkill726, on 07/24/2008, -7/+2Umm...why didn't he patent his invention?
What a douchetool.- GerudoX, on 07/24/2008, -2/+1dugg your comment for the first use of the word douchetool I have seen.
- novemberwhiskey, on 07/24/2008, -1/+2Um, he kinda did. He filed his patents and went to Ford.
Patents take a while to issue, and you have no protection while your patent is pending. - gnarkill726, on 07/25/2008, -0/+1Well, then what is the ***** issue? Why didn't he wait until his patent was issued until he went to Ford?
He is still a douchetool.
- ZzFDKzZ, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4Looks good.
- ericpp, on 07/24/2008, -0/+37Is this a Honda Civic in the trailer?

- AuriniDMJ, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2Anti-trust laws. Patent laws. Get angry because they're not fully enforced, get angry because the Conrad Blacks of the world usually get away with it - but don't go and throw the baby out with the bathwater. You might as well say "Criminals get off and F*** the average citizen... that's Fair Trial for ya!"
- bryan567, on 07/24/2008, -1/+13Looks like it may be a good movie, but "MUST SEE" ? really? I feel hosed.
- MisterNOIR, on 07/24/2008, -0/+1Welcome to Digg.
- dougmwpsu, on 07/24/2008, -0/+5I feel the un-Hollywoodized version of Kearn's life is a much more fascinating story of obsession and mental illness. It all started with that damned cork…
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A545 ...- AuriniDMJ, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2God, that's tragic. But can you really blame him, though? The incentive for ingenuity that made western civilization great is erroding.
