Netflix eliminating Profiles
netflix.com — We wanted to let you know we will be eliminating Profiles, the feature that allowed you to set up separate DVD Queues under one account, effective September 1, 2008. Each additional Profile Queue will be unavailable after September 1, 2008.

- digg it
- svanes, on 06/19/2008, -0/+165this news actually saddens me. i have multiple profiles on netflix, for multiple users in my household, so i found this feature very useful.
- Yarnage, on 06/19/2008, -4/+22My girlfriend and I use this feature to separate our movie queues. Now we will have to manually (and constantly) re-order our queue to make sure we each get a movie each week.
Very disappointing. I use Netflix because it's easy and quick so I may end up canceling and moving to Amazon's video rental feature or possibly Blockbuster if they offer profiles (do they?).
One can hope they will change their minds but since they've already sent out an e-mail to all of their customers, they must have already weighted the good and bad and decided to just not care. Honestly, the excuse "this change will help us to continue to improve the Netflix website for all our customers." is just that; an excuse. There is absolutely no reason why they can't improve their website (which already works very well, IMO) and include profiles.- btschul, on 06/19/2008, -2/+27dude, even if blockbuster has profiles, it is not worth switching
- cpizanias, on 06/19/2008, -0/+12Why? Just from a features standpoint, the ability to patronize both store and mail systems seems sort of worth it, but, admittedly I know nothing little Blockbuster's service and just started using Netflix a month ago.
This news and the Blu-Ray price gouging makes me consider canceling though. - btschul, on 06/19/2008, -3/+14If it wasn't against the rules, the bb employees would ***** in your dvd envelope and throw it at you. they hate customers with a passion.

I rest my case - superkendall, on 06/19/2008, -3/+7Maybe so, but Netflix has created the opening to let every consumer wonder if that is true or not and try them out.
It doesn't matter if Blockbuster doesn't have profiles either, if Netflix doesn't have profiles then I may as well choose any service. - btschul, on 06/19/2008, -3/+4sorry, the bottom link doesn't work. I tried to fix it, but ran out of time on the comment edit thing
- qwertydvorak, on 06/19/2008, -1/+9@btschul: yet you didn't feel the need to fix the link when you made a WHOLE NEW POST !
- cpizanias, on 06/19/2008, -0/+12Why? Just from a features standpoint, the ability to patronize both store and mail systems seems sort of worth it, but, admittedly I know nothing little Blockbuster's service and just started using Netflix a month ago.
- aplardi, on 06/19/2008, -0/+8I use this feature so my mother can have a queue without without having her own account and billing. She just goes in, types a movie she wants, and expects to get it in a few days. No big.
Now I have to have my own account, and her own account. Very, very, VERY lame.
I also had a separate queue for all my play now movies, which I had hoped would be useful for the Roku0 box.
I'm fine with canceling netflix at this point anyway.- SPRFRKR, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4Ahhh, I think you have just hit the nail on the head. They want Grandmom to have her own account. They may view multiple profiles as people sharing accounts (albeit in the same household), so maybe not...
- blakex, on 06/19/2008, -1/+4With the Roku box, you have your standard queue and then you can also have your Instant Queue. I have multiple items in my Instant Queue that will never be mailed to me but I can watch on my Roku box.
- spidoman, on 06/19/2008, -2/+4Ironic, your girlfriend and I also use this feature...
- btschul, on 06/19/2008, -2/+27dude, even if blockbuster has profiles, it is not worth switching
- Jareth86, on 06/19/2008, -1/+25I called them about this a few days ago when I noticed I could not add another new profile. They told me that they were "removing the feature because almost no one uses it".
Are you ***** kidding me?!- formergthing, on 06/19/2008, -0/+15Every single person I know with netflix uses this feature. They are probably disabling it in a misguided attempt to get more subscribers.
- unjustend, on 06/19/2008, -1/+1I don't use this feature. :) But I'm also sad to see it go. They are probably doing this to drive more profit because they have very little price point changes for multiple DVD's out at a time, but have a higher price for entirely new profiles. Corporations need money. I bet if everyone that "Shares" a netflix account because of easy profiling had multiple accounts, blu-rays might not be gouged. But so it goes. *Shrug*
- mike17032, on 06/19/2008, -2/+13Well I didnt even know this feature existed, and I have been using Netflix for years. I wouldnt have used it if I knew about it even, it has no benefit to me.
- Soonago, on 06/19/2008, -2/+3I was scared to admit I had never heard of this either. Thanks for taking the blow.
- Emmo213, on 06/19/2008, -2/+7Same here. I've had Netflix for about 3 years, and I didn't use profiles because I didn't need them. So there ya go, at least 2 people with Netflix that didn't use profiles. I'm sure there's more too.
- tgrk35, on 06/19/2008, -0/+6I use it constantly. I have more than 500 movies in my queue so I have TWO queues for myself, one for my sister. Removing this pisses me off...a lot.
- swollentiki, on 06/19/2008, -1/+3I've used Netflix for over 3 years now and I never used this feature because I would have to use multiple email logins. I would love to be able to have multiple queues on the same email login so I could say dedicate one rental to TV series and two rentals to say new releases, and another to old releases. But I have to constantly keep logging in to reorder my queue to try to time my movies. So there, I don't use it, but would love something like this under one login.
- meiran, on 06/19/2008, -1/+0Of everybody I know that uses Netflix (and that number is probably around a dozen) NONE of them even knew about profiles or used them. And after I told them about it, all but one of them said it wasn't a feature they felt was worth using.
I used multiple queues for myself so that I could organize it and have one tv show and one movie at a time. But I was so annoyed with having to type my password every time I tried to switch back to the main account, and so honestly while I'm annoyed that I had to combine my queues manually (if there's an easy fix I couldn't find it) and somehow I lost about fifty tv show discs in the transfer. I think I found them all again and re-added them, but it was just more trouble than I wanted to deal with.
But honestly, if Netflix says almost nobody was using it, I bet almost nobody was using it. People who are active on websites like this are a skewed sample.
- formergthing, on 06/19/2008, -0/+15Every single person I know with netflix uses this feature. They are probably disabling it in a misguided attempt to get more subscribers.
- JayKeaton, on 06/19/2008, -1/+16The solution to your problem is easy. You currently have multiple profiles for your household, lets say you have 4 profiles set up. To solve this problem all you have to do is sign up three more accounts. Sure it is four times the cost, but your helping Netflix out by paying four times as much for the same experience, thanks to your efforts the Netflix bosses will be able to drive their kids to soccer practice in a Ferrari instead of just a mere Mercedes.
- GiggleStick, on 06/19/2008, -3/+2I'm not sure if this is Netflix's motivation though. I initially though so, but they say in the FAQ on this that you cannot transfer your extra queues to a different account. They basically tell you to print out or lose it forever.
- kazzyD, on 06/19/2008, -0/+5What's even more infuriating is that there is no way to keep your profile information in tact even if you wanted to move it to a separate account! More details here:

- CTK14A, on 06/19/2008, -4/+21Doesn't this mean that the other users will now have to sign up (i.e. pay) for their own account, ensuring an exponential profit increase?
Well, of course it's an improvement! Profits = improvement of service. Just think, now your DVDs will arrive in an envelope far superior to the existing envelope. Today's envelope technology will pale in comparison to the Netflix envelopes of the future!- xino, on 06/19/2008, -2/+10If profits equal improvements, then how come my gas buying experience is staying the same as the cost of it goes up?
- DarkPrincess74, on 06/19/2008, -0/+5Certainly higher gas prices are an improvement to oil execs!
- Doodad, on 06/19/2008, -8/+1The price of gas is going up, not the profit *margin*.
- dralezero, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1To fund newer fuel technology research of course!
- jyrinx, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Doodad: That's what Enron said about electricity prices.
- superkendall, on 06/19/2008, -2/+5Not necessarily, because the profile stuff just split up the account into multiple subaccounts - so you'd still get the same number of discs at once, you'd just have to let multiple people manage the queue. Really annoying for families that used this.
- unjustend, on 06/19/2008, -1/+2Two actual account of 2 DVD's out unlimited at one time costs more than 1 4 DVD out unlimited. Also this drives it so that people who are paying for a 4 DVD queue for 2 different users have more reason to switch to seperate accounts. With instant View being linked to amount out at a time, I can see why they did this. Also, I love unlimited instant view. I love netflix. Hopefully all you piggy backers start paying some cash now so I can have better service. Thanks! :)

- DooM, on 06/19/2008, -0/+43Seriously. I don't even use profiles anymore since my wife lost interest, but the wording in the email kind of ruffled me a little. I sent an email off to them asking exactly how this improves the site - I'd recommend everyone do the same. The thing that's irking me is that Netflix has always seemed to be a different kind of company and this smacks of the usual ***** you get from corporate idiots.
- vurb, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1I replied to the email but they bounced it, imagine that. Anyway, I then sent it to netflix@netflix.com and it went through.
- heliox, on 06/19/2008, -9/+3It makes it less confusing, allowing you to focus on your entertainment needs. Through this reduction in features they hope make personal video entertainment available to all the wretched masses.
- Nitrodist88, on 06/19/2008, -1/+8It helps you focus on your entertainment needs while forcing whoever was on your account to bother you with reordering the list or getting another account for themselves.
- xino, on 06/19/2008, -2/+4If the profile feature confuses you, then don't use it and then it will be equally confusing as to when the option is not available.

Oh right, sarcasm NEVER works on the internet, does it.
- florin, on 06/19/2008, -2/+37Translation: their code base is so f***ed up they can't fix it, what with the recent outages, and regular midnight reboots and all that crap. Somebody at the top blew a gasket and shouted "you either wipe out the whole f***ing thing (the feature that was causing problems), or I'm gonna have your head on a platter".
Since nobody wants their head on a platter, the feature must go.
Of course, better programmers could either fix it, or never implement it to begin with. But it's not like Netflix has the talent pool of a nice area like the Silicon Valley at their disposal, or anything like that...
...oh wait.
(crickets chirping)- jyrinx, on 06/19/2008, -0/+19I think that's probably about right.
Though I wouldn't necessarily blame the programmers (speaking as one) - companies very often refuse to invest in regular code maintenance and cleanup because there's no immediate ROI, so the code just gets crappier and crappier over time. By the time it's really hurting, you need to dedicate months to refactoring, and nobody likes to hear that they're going to have to spend two months not developing anything new and shiny.- munkyxtc, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2I hear ya. Our general rule [amongst dev staff] is make sure you deliver a product you never plan on upgrading because no one is ever approving additional time to implement features / improve existing code.
It sucks but this is pretty typical with larger companies.
- munkyxtc, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2I hear ya. Our general rule [amongst dev staff] is make sure you deliver a product you never plan on upgrading because no one is ever approving additional time to implement features / improve existing code.
- plbogen, on 06/19/2008, -0/+10I called NetFlix to complain and the Customer Service rep told me that profiles were going away because they couldn't figure out bugs in "new features" that had to do with these "new feartures" interacting with profiles so they axed profiles.
- evilangela, on 06/19/2008, -1/+1Yeah, but how often do customer service people actually know that information? They usually just make stuff up or repeat something they heard from someone else. I wouldn't trust it to be relevant whatsoever.
- jyrinx, on 06/19/2008, -0/+19I think that's probably about right.
- besheer, on 06/19/2008, -11/+0Have you considered that maybe you're not their only customer?
- rilus, on 06/19/2008, -1/+3No.
- saegiru, on 06/19/2008, -5/+9Yeah, I got this email and immediately canceled my account and sent an email to them stating why I had canceled. It is extremely ridiculous that they BS you with the idea that it somehow helps improve the website. If they retract this idiocy, I might resubscribe... but as it stands... F you Netflix.
- heucuva, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1It's unusual that a company would prefer to lose information about their customer base, so they must have a pretty good reason to do this. The company I work for keeps a similar database of "profile" information; if we didn't have it, then we would be seriously crippled... and we only perform very light amounts of targeted advertising.
- Kzoo, on 06/19/2008, -1/+0Huh? Do you even know what profiles are? It's where one Netflix account can be used by several people. They get separate queues. I seriously doubt the actual information is going anywhere, just the service.
- hellbent88, on 06/19/2008, -1/+1because profiles are too hard core for nubs
same thing that happen to the wii and good games - CosmosCR, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Well then you're obviously not a software developer. Who is also lazy.
- srf21c, on 06/19/2008, -4/+65Aye...talk about Orwellian doublethink.
- Xexyzl, on 06/19/2008, -18/+5I guess this news just came out recently. Yeah 41 minutes ago, but I can't remember when I got the email. So I guess that means I sent off my complaint within an hour of their announcement?
- wickensworth, on 06/19/2008, -0/+8Those sentences don't make sense together
- rlutterb, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1I want to complain too... what's the best route? Just the customer service email?
- unjustend, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Call them. Calls get more weight then email, then send them an email.
Writing them a letter might actually have more weight overall.
Kinda like congressman
- unjustend, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Call them. Calls get more weight then email, then send them an email.
- healsdata, on 06/19/2008, -0/+212This change will, apparently, "improve the Netflix website for all our customers."
Personally, the website will be much less useful for me. The multiple profile feature allows my wife and I to maintain our own queues, but more importantly, our own ratings. That way, when Netflix is recommending new movies, it is based on our individual tastes and not some crazy admixture of both. We also lose our individual friends lists -- now I'll have to take a ribbing from the guys at work when my wife watches something like Sex and the City. Although it doesn't affect me directly, this also sucks for parents who could, hitherto, create a profile for their child(ren) and set a maturity level to dictate what movies they could rent.
It seems odd to me, that in a day of social networking sites, where individual settings and preferences are key, a company would go out of its way to remove a feature that allowed for customization. The only real motivation I can see here is that Netflix hopes users have become so accustomed to having their own profile that they will sign up for their own account.- tafkase7en, on 06/19/2008, -16/+1If you are that concerned about your recommendations getting messed up, don't let your wife rate the movies she watches. Solved.
- jyrinx, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3Eh ... and if *she* has ratings on *her* profile?
- superkendall, on 06/19/2008, -1/+2Still doesn't help the queue ordering problem. Profiles made sure I always had two movies I could watch, and two my wife would like. No profiles, no balance.
- kevincannon, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2That course of action would probably end up solving the problem of having a wife at all.
- ribfeast, on 06/19/2008, -3/+3None of this matters if you get a second account for your wife - which is what they want you to do :)
- Jibaku, on 06/19/2008, -0/+9I hope you emailed this to netflix.
- proghead, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1hey healsdata, I hope you don't mind, I posted your comment in the suggestion box on Netflix's site. Your opinion really ran parallel with mine.
- rocktopotomus, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2my exact sentiments, and exactly what I told them in my email. I told them that if this does go into affect i will be reducing/canceling my subscription - i think they need to realize that their actions will have a negative financial affect.
- mtschmie, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4I contacted them and informed them I was more likely to have 0 accounts than I would be to have 2.

"Please know that the motivation is solely driven by keeping our service as simple and as easy to use as possible. Too many members found the feature difficult to understand and cumbersome, having to consistently log in and out of the website."
Ha! is it really that difficult? And distracting? I might believe that if there weren't so many different services I use that have this feature.
- tafkase7en, on 06/19/2008, -16/+1If you are that concerned about your recommendations getting messed up, don't let your wife rate the movies she watches. Solved.
- svanes, on 06/19/2008, -0/+35yeah, i sent out a letter of complaint (as a user suggestion)... i think netflix is making a mistake, and i've asked them to reconsider. i don't quite understand how eliminating this feature improves their service, nor do i understand how this feature is a burden for netflix. doesn't amazon allow the use of multiple profiles via the amazon prime service? if they can do it, why can't netflix?
- rossnyc, on 06/19/2008, -2/+2As another poster said, if you can have only one profile then Mom, Dad, Brother and Sister might create their own account instead of sharing one. More accounts = more money.
- groberts1980, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3It's either as rossync said, or the feature had so many code defects they couldn't fix it. Original author no longer with the company, that sort of thing. That being said, what they should have done was to assign a team to either fix the defects, or re-write the feature from scratch. Taking the feature away from end users is just a cop-out.
- pauldavis, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2Improves service for the user=no. Improves revenue for netflix=likely. I think you'll find that the new Roku box could be behind this. Your account allows up to four streams from Netflix. Why should the neighbor not kick me a 12-pack so he can buy a Roku and set it up at his house and watch streaming from his profile in my account?
- rossnyc, on 06/19/2008, -2/+2As another poster said, if you can have only one profile then Mom, Dad, Brother and Sister might create their own account instead of sharing one. More accounts = more money.

What the hell? Why are you getting rid of profiles? That is a huge feature to many who use your service, and "rolling back" to pre-profiles seems like a huge step backwards.
We pay you well, even though you don't always deliver on time, are prone to "shipping mishaps", and often times the disc arrives in unplayable condition. - dhelmet78, on 06/19/2008, -0/+7I just sent a suggestion too:
I'm disappointed by the news that you will be eliminating profiles. I have found that feature very useful to me. Constantly managing my Q to ensure that the next movie sent out is the correct movie for the correct person.... stinks. I had to do that before the profiles were added. A few times my wife sent her movie back, only to get the next one which was one of my requests. It made her angry and I had to take crap for it. Please don't eliminate the profiles or my wife will choke me out. - mike17032, on 06/19/2008, -2/+3Done: "Please keep profiles! If I ever do buy an Asian bride, I want her to be able to have her own queue!"

http://www.netflix.com/Suggest?type=2&lnkctr=cu_su ... - stevehanler, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Don't drop profiles. My wife and I have been using Netflix for a while now and were wanting a way to manage queues for each of us. Then we discovered profiles which was a perfect solution. We both get to have our own queue and ratings and both always have something at home or on the way that we want to watch. Now you're taking it away, to "help us continue to improve the Netflix website for all our customers." The only improvement that this change could possibly help with that I'd be interested in is lower prices. So please reconsider. I'd hate to have to go back to renting movies from Blockbuster.

Assuming each movie is 1.5 hours, that's 31 straight days of movie watching with no stops for pissing or sleeping.- Nitrodist88, on 06/19/2008, -2/+8Is that such a bad thing?
- MrSkrilla, on 06/19/2008, -0/+7yes
- superkendall, on 06/19/2008, -6/+9Actually wouldn't a queue of 500+ movies rather imply exactly the opposite - that the user has so much of a life, they hardly have time for movies?
That's why my queue is a few hundred long. I average less than one a week.- Myonosken, on 06/19/2008, -5/+1Whut. No it really does imply he has no life.

- tgrk35, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4I have the same problem with the 500 movies. I have two queues for this.
And no, it's not because I have no life... TV shows are multiple discs and you don't get them all at once...therefore to watch a season of family guy it's like five dvds...- hrhs556x, on 06/19/2008, -1/+2ok dude that's a 100 seasons........ you still don't have a life.

- mrdlcastle, on 06/19/2008, -0/+65I also believe this to be a mistake. Not only was this one of the only distinguishing features that set Netflix above the rest, but in my mind one of the most important ones.
Not only was this beneficial to families, but also to individuals who wanted to keep movies flowing. I myself used it to ensure DVDs that were part of a series did not interfere with other films of interest. I truly hope they reconsider. - loki1584, on 06/19/2008, -6/+55WTF?

- Kakaze, on 06/19/2008, -2/+17::but I find netflix to be very slow and only send out really old crappy movies.::
I completely agree with this! I mean, I got The Bucket List, Jumper, and Fools Gold each a day after they were released! A DAY after! I want to see them the day they're released but, no, I have to wait until the day after. I just can't watch them a day after they're released because I've already moved onto something new and better. Seriously.
And they are interminably slow too. I send a movie back on Monday, they get it Tuesday, and I have to wait until WEDNESDAY to get a new movie. Wednesday! You mean to tell me they can't send the movie right out to me as soon as they get it so I can have it on Tuesday? So. *****. Slow. Their advice for merging all of your queues into the main queue before the others are deleted: print out all your other queues and enter each movie one at a time.
Their advice for keeping the thousands of movie ratings that you've added in various profiles: sorry, we can't be bothered to think about the issue or implement a migration tool, so we're just going to delete your data.
I've been a Netflix customer since 2003 and am looking for another company soon. I can't believe that they would get rid of such a useful feature in such an unprofessional, half-assed way and then have the gall to say the reason they're doing it is to improve the "user experience" and save DISK SPACE. (HELLO NETFLIX, DO YOU KNOW HOW CHEAP DISK SPACE IS?)- rocktopotomus, on 06/19/2008, -1/+2oh, now... manually adding 500+ movies to a queue will only take a few hours. and it's so much fun!!
how about a button that adds all the films from one queue to another. take table two, append to table one. done. - hechan, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1The easiest way I've found to move your movies, ratings, etc from one Queue to another is to use the Community Friends feature. Befriend your Main account and your Profile, then you can click through each title down the list to add, as well as match your ratings for the Main account. That is of course, assuming you're even sticking around after this.. Can't say I'd blame you either way :]

- CP173, on 06/19/2008, -1/+98I called Netflix' customer service group and was told that this change is being done to correct some back-end issues that complicated product fulfillment, and only affects 2% of their members. (This is approximately 160,000 households based on their last quarterly report.)
It is remarkable that a public company that operates in a highly competitive environment would decide that incremental operational efficiencies are worth risking 2% of its client base. If we assume each account generates about $20 of monthly revenue for Netflix, they are putting over $38M per year at risk. I've run IT organizations for more than 20 years, and I think it's a good business investment to hire a couple extra programmers to protect $38M in sales.
There's a trusted axiom in retail that a customer who has a good experience will tell 5 people, but one that has a bad experience will tell 20. The potential negative word-of-mouth of this decision is quite significant.
I'm so glad to not be a Netflix shareholder right now.- Yarnage, on 06/19/2008, -0/+10I don't understand how any complications are created. - isomorf, on 06/19/2008, -1/+20Haha, that's funny that it's now only "2%" of their customers who use the feature. Earlier this evening customer service was saying "only 1%" of their customers use it.
I think though that "2%" is too low if you look at how many users have already complained on many, many different websites, and all of this within a few hours of the emails going out.

- digitalrob, on 06/19/2008, -0/+0Let's pretend that 2% is the actual number of users this issue will effect.
Because setting up profiles takes a bit of interest and a recognition that technology can do cool things beyond plug and play, these 2% are probably among the most active users.
As a result, the effected users probably provide no profit margin for the company, so pissing us off really doesn't matter.- isomorf, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Except that we're also the ones who recommend things to our less technically proficient peers and family members. I personally have recommended netflix to all my family members, who used to have video store rentals, and my entire extended family are now netflix customers as a result of my recommendations.

- calderson, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2There is another axiom that says to fire the bottom 10% of your clients - this is basically what they are doing. Info:
http://www.entrepreneur.com/money/moneymanagement/ ...- CP173, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1I agree that there is no use serving those clients whose consumption of resources is disproportionate to their revenue generation. However, we've seen no evidence that members that use profiles are "bad" customers. Indeed, I suspect that we are among the most loyal customers (read: best source of revenue and referrals). I was absolutely happy to evangelize Netflix to all my friends.
Until now.
So, it appears that Netflix misinterpreted this axiom, and instead are attempting to fire the TOP 10% of their clients.- isomorf, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Multi-person accounts that use multiple profiles are much more likely to go through more dvds a month than multi-person accounts that don't use profiles, all other things being equal.
The reason is that without multiple profiles, it will sometimes be the case that all the movies currently out are desired by one single person. Until that person watches and returns something, the account is effectively on hold (except that netflix keeps getting $ for nothing), and no matter how much the other parties would like to watch something, they can't.
Using multiple profiles, even if I have only 1 slot allocated to my profile's queue, I can watch things (and chew through my queue) as quickly as I can do the fetch-watch-return cycle. So even though the other person is sitting on theirs, we keep getting movies.
So by eliminating multiple profiles, they greatly increase the frequency at which it happens that the person that wants to watch a DVD currently has nothing they want to watch.
Note: I'm not saying that this is true in every case, and I don't think that's the primary reason for this. I think it is probably mainly due to programmer laziness and incompetence in how the system was designed and profiles were grafted on as a kludge, combined with management not wanting to invest the necessary time for cleaning up something that was improperly implemented. That it will also cause lots of people to sign up for new accounts and get rid of some people who get more than their money's worth is even better.
Their next year's report to the investors will talking about how they had a massive spike in new memberships last year due to their continuing outstanding customer service.

- pcmcg, on 06/19/2008, -0/+30Wow, netflix is really out of touch. Probably time to start shorting the stock. This has got to be one of the biggest shoot-yourself-in-the-foot moves ever.
- niksa, on 06/19/2008, -0/+22According to their official FAQ about it on their webpage, you can't even transfer your profile into a separate account. I share a netflix account with my sister, and honestly, I'd rather split the account than merge it.
- DooM, on 06/19/2008, -0/+13Hey - that might actually be the REAL reason they've done this. Possibly looking for extra revenue from people who share accounts..?
- jyrinx, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2*Maybe.* That might make sense if they were gracefully phasing the feature out.
However the condescension in the FAQ and the lack of *any* way to keep queues and recs suggests otherwise. If they just wanted to make people get separate accounts, they'd let you split off your profiles into full accounts. Seems much more like they're just completely clueless as to what their customers want. - formergthing, on 06/19/2008, -0/+5How lazy can you get? Snub a large portion of your customers, and don't even take the time to come up with an easy migration system. I'm going to lose my queue, my ratings, etc. They asked me to write my queue down on PAPER or PRINT IT OUT and add all my movies to the main queue one by one.
No thanks.
Imagine if you called customer service for Microsoft Word, and they told you to start writing your documents on a pad of paper.
Seriously, creating a migration tool might take an experienced programmer a few days.
EPIC EPIC FAIL.
All they're doing here is kicking me out an ensuring that I never come back.- vurb, on 06/19/2008, -1/+0Exactly, minus well go ahead and add them all to your brand new blockbuster account since you're having to do it manually anyways, amirite?
- tibs, on 06/19/2008, -0/+17Great, next they will make me view my queue in that damn slide show style that they have for new releases.

- geoffsmith1981, on 06/19/2008, -1/+8If I have to combine my account with my girlfriend all of my recommendations are going to be completely skewed. Either they lower the cost for same address deliveries on different accounts or I'll look at canceling. I'm not going to pay 5 bucks more for the same service.
- grangerfx, on 06/19/2008, -0/+73Removal of profiles will mean:
I am going to have to manually move all of my queue over to my wife's main account queue (that's over 150 dvs). There is no automatic way to do this.
After spending all that time, money and PR bragging about how great their movie suggestion software is, they are going to destroy it by merging multiple users into one account. From now on I am going to be seeing recomendations for emotional chick flicks and my wife is going to see recomendations of the latest Jackass movie. Sweet.
There is no option to split the account into multiple accounts. Making another account will just cost the user money because they lose their multiple DVD discount. Netflix does not even want users to do this because there is no way to move a profile to a new account.
This is all after learning that early adopters will now have to pay a premium for blue ray movies.
Oh and did you hear that internet providers are going to start charging for excess internet usage and watching just one Netflix movie on demand will put some users over the limit?
Their new company slogan should be:
Netflix: It just gets worse and worse.- jyrinx, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4Holy Christ. I hadn't even thought of what tiered Internet service means for streaming movie rentals.

- Thermogenic, on 06/19/2008, -2/+13If Blockbuster can get this feature rolling in the next two months, it will be a HUGE coup for them in both added customers and in the PR battle. This rivals eBay's feedback changes (which I personally approve of) as the most reviled system change of 2008. People continue to use eBay because there are no viable alternatives (and good sellers are actually making a lot more money), but will they continue to use Netflix with Blockbuster already there and arguably more convenient?
I am 100% certain that I will drop Netflix if they get rid of this feature. I'm not 100% certain I'll go over to Blockbuster though.- vtnerd, on 06/19/2008, -8/+1Buried because you think it's acceptable for buyers to blackmail sellers on eBay. You obviously have never sold anything on eBay...

- jyrinx, on 06/19/2008, -0/+0Yeah, isn't that cute? "Scheduled" my ass.
Either it's not scheduled at all, or they deliberately scheduled it to keep out the townsfolk and their torches and pitchforks. - xino, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2It's back up now.

- bbatsell, on 06/19/2008, -0/+42Here's Netflix's snotty, condescending, ultimately vacuous response, as sent to the popular Hacking Netflix blog:
Update: Netflix spokesperson Steve Swasey said that the decision to eliminate Profiles is a "final decision." Swasey also had the following to say:
Netflix is a dynamic company that continues to evolve and grow while consistently giving members to best online movie rental experience.
Think of where we were when I joined a little more than three years ago. Then, we had 2.6 million members and 35,000 titles on DVD. Today, 8.2 million members, more than 100,000 titles on DVD and more than 10,000 choices of movies and TV episodes to watch instantly on the PC and the TV.
With such dramatic growth and site and service improvements comes the occasional adjustment.
While discontinuing the Profiles feature is not desirable for the passionate folks who use it, the decision will ultimately benefit all Netflix members. By discontinuing the feature, we will be able to put more focus and resources site and service improvements that benefit everyone, consistent to how we have grown the service over the years.- DooM, on 06/19/2008, -0/+21They must hire really ***** developers if profiles are taking up THAT much of their time.
- jyrinx, on 06/19/2008, -1/+10Not necessarily. They might have really terrific developers and really ***** management of them. (Think Microsoft.)
- formergthing, on 06/19/2008, -1/+5This is a likely scenario.
- Yarnage, on 06/19/2008, -0/+8I agree their developers must be total crap. Additional profiles should use the _exact_ same architecture as full, paid profiles with less rights.
This is dumb. I'm canceling my account if they don't change their mind.

- rmiller07, on 06/19/2008, -0/+8This is an outrage.
So weak! - Redredding, on 06/19/2008, -0/+16Does Blockbuster have profiles? If not, it'd be a good time for to consider adding them.
- vtnerd, on 06/19/2008, -0/+12This is one of the main features that gave Netflix an edge over Blockbuster Online. I used this feature to allow my son his own queue of movies so that he always got at least one of our three at a time to watch for himself and he was in control of when he sent it back to get his next movie.
Unfortunately for Netflix, I switched to Blockbuster Online for the unlimited in store exchanges. The fact that Netflix chose to throttle my movies made it even easier to drop their service. I get more Blockbuster movies and I get them faster by mail and much faster in the store.
The only way I will ever switch back is if their streaming box gets new releases in HD+surround sound at the same time as they release to DVD/bluray. But it looks like Netflix has no clue about pleasing customers....- vtnerd, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3oh and those streaming HD movies with surround sound had better also be unlimited and affordable
- itsme92, on 06/19/2008, -1/+17this is *****
- mparker7410, on 06/19/2008, -1/+19Me eliminating Netflix.
- ryankeefe, on 06/19/2008, -0/+24What I don't understand is how does this help Netflix in any way? I can only see this hurting them since it will frustrate the many customers who use this feature. As a 16 year old, it was so much easier to keep my profile separate from my parents' and my sister's. Now everything is going to be mixed and will likely cause a lot of arguments.
- isomorf, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1They are probably hoping that a sufficient number of the affected people will sign up for new accounts to replace the deleted profiles, which will result in more revenue as well as a big spike in memberships.
- dohidied, on 06/19/2008, -2/+21Wow, ***** Netflix.
- damstou, on 06/19/2008, -0/+21Seeing an official say that this is a "final decision" means they couldn't care less how people feel about this. I have just canceled my account.
- florin, on 06/19/2008, -0/+18Also, they said they may charge extra if you're renting Blu-Ray.
I used to really like Netflix a lot. :-( - exomni, on 06/19/2008, -3/+17What the *****? So all my ratings will be gone?
***** NETFLIX. I'm seriously considering canceling my membership. This is *****.- xelloss, on 06/19/2008, -2/+4Aren't the ratings tied to your account? What does that have to do with your dvd profile queues. "We wanted to let you know we will be eliminating Profiles, the feature that allowed you to set up separate DVD Queues under one account"
I don't think they are removing the ratings system.- formergthing, on 06/19/2008, -0/+6They're not removing the ratings system, but they are removing my profile, and therefore all my ratings.
EPIC FAIL.
- formergthing, on 06/19/2008, -0/+6They're not removing the ratings system, but they are removing my profile, and therefore all my ratings.
- jyrinx, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2But they're removing the ability to have separate ratings for separate profiles. It's not the reason I have separate profiles, but it's a damn good one.
- isomorf, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Yes, they will delete all ratings of all profiles that aren't the primary profile.
- xelloss, on 06/19/2008, -2/+4Aren't the ratings tied to your account? What does that have to do with your dvd profile queues. "We wanted to let you know we will be eliminating Profiles, the feature that allowed you to set up separate DVD Queues under one account"
- digitaldivinci, on 06/19/2008, -0/+9I really won't be affected by this at all, but when I have tried to 'recruit' friends this has always been a major selling point. I also suggested getting a larger plan with my roommates next year, but this would really put an end to that plan working out well.
I don't want to boo Netflix, yet at the same time I find it to be an unnecessary call. I still really enjoy the service and I hope they will provide some method of rectifying the situation whether it be migration tools or offering a discount for those registering for the same residence or even creating a new method that provides a similar experience.- superkendall, on 06/19/2008, -5/+3I think the time has come for customers to make thier own migration tools - no need for those ratings to stay locked in Netflix. Perhaps IMDB, or Blockbuster would be a good home for them.
- wyzzerdd, on 06/19/2008, -3/+8Just changed my sub from 4 at a time to 2, no point in having 2 extra for my moms profile which is being deleted.
- NWVG, on 06/19/2008, -0/+12Wow, this seems like the type of customer service that the wonderful Blockbuster employees provide me at their stores. What a strange move from Netflix that makes me seriously question their loyalty to their customers. Guess I'll have to go back to BitTorrent.
- zaaaaa, on 06/19/2008, -1/+9The 2% is more a failure of their marketing department. The fact that they chose to not promote this as an additional way to gain an edge over their competition is mindboggling. I'm sure glad that they're putting all these resources into on demand video because I can just wat... wait no I can't on my Mac. I've already called and complained to them. I've been with Netflix since 1999 and this is the first time I've seriously considered switching to the competition. Time to try Blockbuster and see how they stack up.
- superkendall, on 06/19/2008, -2/+3I still like Netflix a lot, but between this and the potential extra Blu-Ray fees, has me kind of wondering about Blockbuster too.
- btschul, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4They don't even come close
- superkendall, on 06/19/2008, -2/+2Perhaps but now a lot of us are going to try. That helps Netflix, not at all.
- vurb, on 06/19/2008, -0/+0I have both Netflix and BBonline and (in my area) they are the same. BBOnline is actually better since they have B&M stores
- exomni, on 06/19/2008, -2/+20If they delete my profile without giving me any option to migrate my ratings, reviews and such to a new paying profile, I'm never going to use Netflix again. ***** them, I'll deal with a company that doesn't treat their loyal customers like *****.
- btschul, on 06/19/2008, -1/+7Which one would that be?
- superkendall, on 06/19/2008, -2/+5It might be no company. And that might be a better option.
- DontSayFanboy, on 06/19/2008, -0/+5Why on earth would you move your queue to a PAYING profile? Do you really enjoy paying more money for something you used to get for free?
My wife and I watch movies together, we will never pay two bills to netflix. Our two at a time, two queue system worked out great. Each one of us would have a movie we wanted to see. We each would get recommendations tailored to our tastes.
I am not sure why I should pay twice as much on September 1st should I want to continue the same level of service.
- btschul, on 06/19/2008, -1/+7Which one would that be?
- Digital2D, on 06/19/2008, -5/+12RABEL RABEL RABEL RABEL!
- jtbradley, on 06/19/2008, -1/+2hahah! Seriously, though, this is bull. Rabel rabel rabel.
haha- Digital2D, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2i believe they are just stirring the news pot...they want to drum up some attention
this makes no sense otherwise????
RABEL RABEL RABEL RABEL!- mrjofo, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1There is no way this is a publicity stunt.
- Digital2D, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2i believe they are just stirring the news pot...they want to drum up some attention
- Kzoo, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Rabel? Am I missing some reference, or are you seriously referring to a medieval musical instrument?
- slevdog, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1EPIC FAIL.
REBEL REBEL REBEL
- jtbradley, on 06/19/2008, -1/+2hahah! Seriously, though, this is bull. Rabel rabel rabel.
- MorDecai, on 06/19/2008, -3/+17This just sounds like laziness to me. They probably don't want to continue supporting profiles because it's too much work. Not cool.
- florin, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4bingo
- mentalfoto, on 06/19/2008, -0/+21I don't use the feature, though I can imagine how it would be useful in a multi-viewer household.
However I would NEVER, EVER go back to Blockbuster as long as I live to give them one dime of money. Not after all the years of having them be the only game in town and how they used to rape us over late charges and bogus fees for tapes they'd claim you'd never returned when you in fact had.
I think once Netflix gets an earful of the ***** they've stirred they'll backpedal on this policy.- skunks, on 06/19/2008, -0/+6I'm with you. Blockbuster is evil. As a former employee, I know firsthand how they game the "no late fees" system for in-store rentals. Also, their online selection sucks (the same as their in-store selection), and no view on demand - though I will grant that Netflix view on demand ain't that great, at least it exists.
- formergthing, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1They claimed the decision is final. So whatever they do, we can be certain they are not to be trusted.
- mike23w, on 06/19/2008, -20/+6Who cares.
