Ten Classic Films That Would Have Been Cool in 3D
filmschoolrejects.com — The upcoming "Journey to the Center of the Earth" is the first full-length feature film to be shot in digital 3D, because the studio wanted it that way. This presents an interesting idea: What if the studios had mandated that certain other projects be 3D? So we cam with 10 films that could’ve, nay, should’ve been made in vivid 3D

- real, on 07/08/2008, -3/+8No films are good in 3d. 3d is a fad that keeps coming back. I Repeat" Hollywood , we don't like headaches".
- sancho, on 07/08/2008, -1/+3You're not kidding.
Hollywood is really freaking out over piracy, and frankly, this recent iteration of the "3-D push" is just an attempt to get people back in the seats. They simply can't believe that poor audience attendance could have anything to do with the high ticket prices, being treated like a criminal for just going into the movie, and people talking/answering their damned cell phone in the theater.
I used to love going to the movies for the experience. The experience has been tarnished. I don't go to movies so much anymore. I don't pirate them, either, though. I just get them from Netflix as they become available. Saves me money and I don't have to put up with the irritating jerks at the theater. - illegalcortex, on 07/08/2008, -0/+7Have you actually watched films in 3d lately? I mean the 3d imax kind that uses the polarized glasses. I've watched several nature documentaries, the best of which was Deep Sea 3d. They don't give you headaches. It's just two polarized projectors projecting onto the same screen, not some weird hack like LCD goggles that flicker on and off. The 3d affect is pretty amazing, too.
- 00Dan, on 07/08/2008, -0/+0Difference being that the documentaries are usually long slow helicopter shots of lakes and mountains. Images that are relativity motionless.
With the current style of movie shooting (ie. MTV generation- constantly changing camera angles composed of no footage longer than 3 seconds) it's a real strain on the eyes. Your eyes barely adjust to the new focus and it changes again. - illegalcortex, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Actually, no. Deep Sea 3d contained quite a bit of movement, much of it fast with a lot more objects moving around on screen (fish, crustaceans, etc.) than you'd see in most other movies. I also think your claim about changing camera angles causing eye strain more in 3d than in 2d needs a bit more proof to back it up. My opinion, from having watched my 3d imax movies, is that it wouldn't make it any worse. Unfortunately, I did not get to see the 3d version of Nightmare Before Christmas.

- lensman00, on 07/08/2008, -1/+4What, no "12 Angry Men"?
- f4nt0m4s, on 07/08/2008, -0/+11What a horrible horrible list. Citizen Kane in 3D? Are you ***** kidding me? Half of those films on that list are special because of the particular camera techniques or film technology used at the time the films were filmed. Making them 3D would add nothing to their greatness. Furthermore, as classic and important as Citizen Kane is, it's kind of boring to watch. There Will Be Blood is a modern Citizen Kane with far more interesting dynamics for a modern generation. And no one wants to see There Will Be Blood in 3D.
If you're going to do 3D films do it right...something like The Matrix or 300. Even the terrible bastardization of the wonderful epic poem, Beowulf, looked pretty good in 3D. My dad always talks about how there was a Frankenstein movie in 3D, and apparently there was lots of blood and guts flying out of the screen. That sounds mildly interesting...much better than Singin’ in the Rain....IN 3D!!!!!
Seriously, buried for being a ***** ***** list.- slearwig, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2Your dad is talking about "Andy Warhol's Frankenstein", a.k.a.
"Flesh for Frankenstein". The first title is usually the 3D version while "Flesh" is usually the 2D version, but check with any revival theaters first to be sure that their screening is in 3D. This is the movie database page for both.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071508/ - scottmbeggs, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3The point was Classic Films. Not just anything. They took entries from the AFI Top 100. As mentioned in the first paragraph.
- f4nt0m4s, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2the article asked: "We also want to ask that of the films we chose, would they be improved or worsened by 3D effects."
My opinion, just as a casual fan of film who has taken a couple film classes, is that classical films are touchy and reinterpreting them as 3D would be difficult and probably not very effective. At least for most of them. The thing is, you have to look at the film as a whole...there is certainly one segment in Citizen Kane that might have had a "greater" impact if it was shot using 3D, but I doubt it. Orson Wells accomplished the same feat using low camera angles.
- f4nt0m4s, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2the article asked: "We also want to ask that of the films we chose, would they be improved or worsened by 3D effects."
- LLLSecretChimp, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1CK had a lot of cool tracking shots that would've been enhanced by 3D, particularly the shots going into the nightclub.
Also, the shots through the snow-globe at the beginning would've been neat if the snow appeared to whirl around the theater.
However, there were a lot of matte paintings in CK, and 3D would've required twice as many.
- slearwig, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2Your dad is talking about "Andy Warhol's Frankenstein", a.k.a.
- DoTheFandango, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3The Matrix, 300, 7th Kingdom? All not here? Yet Citizen Kane is?
- LanceWindu, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1#10 Star Wars... aren't they making a 3D version of this already? I remember reading something about how Lucas (and by Lucas I mean someone else) has developed a way to make his already made films into 3D.
- burjzyntski, on 07/08/2008, -2/+0Debbie Does Dallas?
or any porn?
or just real-life in 3-D? - Starshope, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Fantasia would be almost like a mild acid trip if it were in 3D.
- desertDenizen, on 07/08/2008, -2/+3LOTR
Apocalypse Now
Empire (worth it just for the asteroid belt)
Matrix
Brainstorm (don't laugh, it fits)
Blade Runner - V3n0M, on 07/08/2008, -1/+1Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (mine carts!)
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Happy Gilmore - slearwig, on 07/08/2008, -1/+2"A Scanner Darkly" (in 3D and rotoscoped) and "Blade Runner" with an artful use of depth should do.
For mainstream films I want Indiana Jones! - Rudegar, on 07/08/2008, -3/+1driving miss daisy FTW!
- 00Dan, on 07/08/2008, -2/+0Got a free pass to an early showing of that movie. I want the 2 hours of my life back please.
Ridiculous plot
Acting that was obviously on a sound stage in front of a green screen
Impossible "movie physics" every 5 minutes
And the 3D? Parts were decent, but 3D sucks for full screen fast movement. Maybe I was at a bad distance to the screen, maybe there's something wrong with how my eyes focus, but scenes with alot of fast movement were little more than a blur to me as my eyes attempted to adjust.
Bring the kids and have fun watching them jump when something in 3D comes at them but otherwise save your money and time. - zadadka, on 07/08/2008, -2/+1Fantasia, Star Wars, 2001...from the list, these I can agree with.
But the rest rely on specific events in the film's story, just a few minutes in most cases, to provide the providence for their appearance in the list.
Anything space-oriented, like Star Wars & 2001, will be a mammoth task to get right...they're just too big a bite (no "byte" pun intended), & I think this writes them off in terms of making them appealing to a general audience looking for (and expecting) realism and plausibility.
Toy Story & Fantasia will be the winners in promoting 3D, as could be the likes of Mulan, Dinosaur, and Matrix (Cartoon).
Actually, if done well, I could see 3D providing a most lucrative and beneficial resurrection of many "really should not have, but did, fail" cartoons...."Titan AE" was my first thought in this genre.
Personally, I feel the technology just isn't "there yet" to make live action stereoscopic / anaglyph / etc movies a successful participant in the field of cinema.
We can look forward to the day, though. - illegalcortex, on 07/08/2008, -1/+3delete
- nmc1980, on 07/08/2008, -1/+2fear and loathing in las vegas would be amazing in 3D
- thedpshow, on 07/08/2008, -0/+4I agree with exactly none of these.
- Vessol, on 07/08/2008, -1/+1Dugg for Citizen Kane and Dr.Strangelove.
Two of the best, if not the best, movies ever. - sagat, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2Pah Well's would have done Citizen Kane in 4D, there are still shots and effects in that movie that modern Cinematographers have no idea how the ***** he pulled them off using the techniques and technology of the time.
- StrangeLove81, on 07/08/2008, -0/+0Oh that would be so neat! :-) These classic films are just some of the many I'd love to see in 3-D! It would be loads of fun!!!
- osarusan, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Citizen Kane?? WTF? Why not make a list of movies that would beneft from 3D, or at least look really good, rather than just a list of famous movies? Some movies are good for their stories, others are good for their explosions and effects shots. 3D does nothing to enhance the story (if anything it detracts from it) so why not just stick to the movies that would really be enjoyable in 3D?
- AnarchoGoth, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder was shot in 3d.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dial_M_for_Murder#3D_ ... - joshradde, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1I think I'd like to point out that I don't think these films should be adapted in some way or another to be 3D. It was more a question of what these films would be like if 3D had been as popular a medium as it is becoming now. But no, Citizen Kane, Star Wars, Wizard of Oz, I wouldn't change these films one bit. It was a game we like to play on FSR, the big Hollywood "What if" game.
