The Best of NC-17 Movies: 10 Films Somewhere Between R & X
flixster.com — It isn't porn. Not by a long shot. But there's nakedness. Below-the-belt nakedness. Hot, sweaty, hunka-hunka, doitdoitdoitnow nakedness. Okay, it's porn. And maybe some violence.

- dumpstermuffin, on 10/01/2008, -6/+27ah, America... so quick to condemn sex with a spooky guilt-laden rating but happy to greenlight violence. ultra-violence! (actually, i think clockwork orange did get an nc-17.)
- swordedge, on 10/02/2008, -0/+27Clockwork orange was released way before there was an NC-17
- FatBird19, on 10/02/2008, -8/+2Ultra violence and gore porn is disgusting, but even in mild violence, what you're watching on screen is just stage blood and prosthetics. Pornographic sexual images and nudity is the real thing. I think that ratings on violence should become far stricter, not that ratings on sexuality should be loosened to match. That doesn't really fix the problem.
- kawaiirobo, on 10/02/2008, -0/+6if you watch the movie This film is not yet Rated you'll see that America as a whole isn't "so quick to condemn sex" but that the MPAA as an organization is willing to bow to pressure. Try criticizing the singular group, not the Country as a whole.
- Blacksoth, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2Some might argue that the far reaching overkill of the MPAA is a symptom of what's wrong in the country as a whole. I saw that film and especially liked Matt Stone and Trey Parkers' bit where they made all kinds of ridiculous scenes (scenes they didn't even want in the film) for Team America World Police so that they'd cut it down to a rated R rating instead of NC-17.
- kawaiirobo, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3That is a valid point, but in the film they present many cases where the people on the rating board are not representative of the average American parent. The ratings board is full of flaws and for the most part is comprised of conservative people, and while I don't generally have any problem with someones politics or their choice to be conservative, you can't be that way when you are judging art. So yes, I do believe that the MPAA reflects what is wrong with this country in general, but they reflect it with magnification, and bend to the relatively smaller number of people that will take the time to write letters and such. As for Team America, you'd be surprised just how many directors do that, a lot of film makers have realized the MPAA is generally full of stupid people that get off on their power, so if you make it extra bad, and let hem cut it to where you like it, they still fell like they had the power in the relationship and you can squeeze much more into your movie. As far as I know, Kevin Smith has been doing that since Chasing Amy.
- SpitRage, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2A Clockwork Orange also contains sex and nudity.
- andrewlotta, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2Clockwork Orange received an X-rating when released, making it the 2nd X-rated film to be nominated for Oscars.
- phreenet, on 10/01/2008, -0/+8Amazing list, great video links.
- didgital, on 10/01/2008, -4/+13Crash was an absolutely horrid film.
- sjbdallas, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3Yeah but pretty hot softcore.
- dweeb79, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1I thought Crash was soft when compared to Naked Lunch.
I hate Naked Lunch; I tried three times to finish it, but I just couldn't do it. Crash was at least watchable.- AndrewDB, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2Naked Lunch is just ***** up.
I have got to give you kudos for trying to finish it three times.. - kawaiirobo, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1I can think of at least two things wrong with that title.
- AndrewDB, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2Naked Lunch is just ***** up.
- kawaiirobo, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2It's Cronenberg, you either love 'em or oyu hate 'em.
- nutsackorama, on 10/02/2008, -0/+0It's a terrible book, too.
- stachesnmullets, on 10/02/2008, -0/+5Dugg for Anais Nin & keepin' it classy.
- DrCrankenstein, on 10/02/2008, -6/+15Requiem: Never again.
- sjbdallas, on 10/02/2008, -0/+16I watched "This film is not yet rated" on IFC a month ago and it was great. It was hilarious how the ratings board was trying to explain to him why their film was getting NC-17.
- civilizedevil, on 10/02/2008, -0/+20What about Orgazmo?
- shadowofdeath15, on 10/02/2008, -0/+8Did you ever see that movie umm.. Clash of the Titans? Yeah , I don't wanna sound like a queer or nothing but I think unicorns are Kick Ass!
- dynelol, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2NOW, YOU'RE A MAN!
- Vash_aka_TK, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1Or Cannibal The Musical.
- frontporsche, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1What's the music in the "Lust, Caution" trailer?
- ricperry1, on 10/02/2008, -0/+12Mysterious Skin... good movie.
- MisterOh, on 10/02/2008, -1/+11I watched Requiem and I became extremely depressed for the next few days. Great movie though.
- bacon_skoda, on 10/02/2008, -1/+1there's always hope.
- LogicBomB, on 10/02/2008, -1/+1Requiem was probably the best anti-heroin movie I've ever seen.
- AndrewDB, on 10/02/2008, -1/+40If it isn't porn whose to say Digg as a whole would be interested in it?
Also, I've gotta say, if schools showed kids Requiem for a Dream as part of their anti-drug crusades, a lot less kids would be doing drugs now days.- spoogieking012, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2worked for me
- pseudologue, on 10/02/2008, -1/+6It's a great list even though Crash was underwhelming when I saw that a million years ago and I didn't even know it was NC 17.
But, seriously, where the ***** is KEN PARK on this list?! That film has one of the most porno NC-17 unrated ***** I've seen that wasn't a foreign movie. semi-adolescent full frontal and penetration threesome FTW!- Lochie, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3Don't forget about the guy choke-wanking.
- dukenuk3m, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1It's called The Best of NC-17, not the most shocking NC-17 movies. Ken Park was pretty shocking, but that's the only reason it was made by that pederast of a director. It was all made for shock value, and that alone. Shocking? Sure. Was it any good? Absolutely not. Probably one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
- floorman56, on 10/02/2008, -1/+1The movie has never been issued in wide release in the United States. It has not found a distributor since its initial showing at the Telluride Film Festival in 2002
So the MPAA may not have even seen it
- medfreak, on 10/02/2008, -1/+8They clearly did not watch "The Dreamers".
- MisterOh, on 10/02/2008, -4/+2movie was crap.
but damn eva green has some nice *****.
- MisterOh, on 10/02/2008, -4/+2movie was crap.
- Jaime2000, on 10/02/2008, -9/+4More like "The Only 10 NC-17 Movies Ever Made"
- dronkmunk, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1They didn't include 'Baise Moi.' It's like a french version of Thelma and Louise with full penetration shots.
And no, it's not a 'porno.' Got it off netflix.
- dronkmunk, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1They didn't include 'Baise Moi.' It's like a french version of Thelma and Louise with full penetration shots.
- MCA2142, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3What I learned from Showgirls: Lesbians love dog food.
- Neiby, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1Even the NC-17 version of that movie sucked. Sure, it was worth it once, but it was still painfully bad. There literally is no reason to watch the R rated version. Easily one of the worst movies ever made.
- spookyttws, on 10/02/2008, -0/+23Creepily enough, 'Crash' was one of the first films I found on IFC that showed nudity (that wasn't blocked) to me as a 13 year old. It's an interesting/creepy movie, but ranks as one of the only films I could masturbate to that was showed on standard cable. Yes it had it's horrible parts, but there was a' ***** from behind' scene on a balcony that really spoke to me.
- nymphetamine, on 10/02/2008, -0/+13Dugg for honesty.
- nixniente, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4"there was a' ***** from behind' scene on a balcony that really spoke to me."
I haven't seen the movie, but this is a lovely phrase.
- PabloIV, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2Almodovar is a weirdo but he's our weirdo.
- MrJ777, on 10/02/2008, -2/+6Dugg for Happiness and Requiem for a Dream teaching me the phrase "ass to ass".
Showgirls cast the wrong Saved by the bell cast member (shouldve been the girl who played Kelli) - dragzealot, on 10/02/2008, -0/+0Does Rules of Attraction count?
- nutsackorama, on 10/02/2008, -0/+0I'm pretty sure that it's PG-13?
- doublefelix, on 10/02/2008, -1/+2I'm glad to see Ken Park isn't on this list.
- cryonix, on 10/02/2008, -0/+5Ive seen a majority of those movies and didn't know they were NC-17. Nothing really clicked with those movies as being too provocative or taboo. Also IFC has show these movies uncut, good place to watch movies the way they were intended.
- socialrebel, on 10/02/2008, -0/+9dugg for darren aronofsky
- tectonix, on 10/02/2008, -4/+4dugg for requiem for a dream
and the other crash is such a better film then this crash, wacky la things? how about life. a very powerful movie and powerful performance by don cheadle - refriedbeaner, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3What kind of list doesn't include one of the best NC-17 movies "Orgazmo" !!!!!!
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0124819/ - Gatesophile, on 10/02/2008, -2/+5***** dugg for Requiem for a Dream. That movie is ***** awesome. And really depressing.
- purzzzell, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1Requiem was NC-17?
- Gatesophile, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1The original was. It was edited for an R rating for select VHSs, for video chains like Blockbuster. It was later released as the "Director's Cut" which is the original.
- purzzzell, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1Requiem was NC-17?
- DjOverEZ, on 10/02/2008, -0/+7I can't believe "Kids" wasn't on this list. Talk about a movie that stays with you!
- ZoomBoy, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1I love "Kids". One of the first DVD's I ever bought and just recently watched it again, it still stays true to this day! Which is incredible for a film made in the early 90's.
- Napiertt, on 10/02/2008, -1/+1I don't think Kids was NC17
- khaavren, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1it was.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113540/
- khaavren, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1it was.
- sandersdamnit, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1"Shhhhhhhh, It's me, Casper"
- RSS14, on 10/02/2008, -2/+1If you're going to watch Requiem for a Dream, watch the NC-17 version! The adult themes of the NC-17 version are vital to the atmosphere and plot.
- kawaiirobo, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4"The Dreamers" is a great film that unfortunately got the snub from this list and the MPAA. A little odd to say the least, but a good watch none the less.
- zebragrrl, on 10/02/2008, -1/+1Crash is one of my all-time favourite films.
- HyroProto, on 10/02/2008, -4/+0dugg for requiem for a dream
- orph3us, on 10/02/2008, -1/+1nice list... i intend to watch mysterious skin and happiness.. look like interesting, moving, deep movies. nc17, meh... kids will have to download/wait for their parents to rent it on dvd for them... not a big deal.
- Philbert, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2I have only seen 3 of those. Happiness I didn't like but my old roommate loved it, Showgirls was awful (thanks Berkley), and Requiem was awesome but grosses me out.
- saegiru, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4To hell with the MPAA and their stupid ratings anyway.
- skabyss, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1No Caligula? No Salo?
Buried for inaccuracy- purzzzell, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1I think Caligula was X.
- Neiby, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1And it sucked.
- Blacksoth, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2Salo was the most f'd up movie I've ever seen. Ever.
- purzzzell, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1I think Caligula was X.
- orthodoxDrew, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4They forgot "The Cook, the Thief, his Wife & her Lover". Great one.
- dynelol, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1The description references that horrible song. God damn, I hate that song.
- unclebuck, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3"Requiem for a Dream" should be required viewing for every high school student. No more guidance counselors with their "drugs are bad, mmmkay" stuff. Just show them this film.
- superfan003, on 10/02/2008, -2/+0You forgot Basic Instinct! Hands down the best NC 17 movie
- ShiftyBizniss, on 10/02/2008, -1/+0tiffany amber thiessen
- jstem1994, on 10/02/2008, -0/+2Dugg for Antonio Banderas and Tie Me Up / Tie Me Down!
- Blacksoth, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1Now I got more movies on my list of things to see. :) And I saw "This Movie Not Yet Rated", it's a documentary about the MPAA and their rating system and has no sex or violence in it with the exception of select cuts from film to prove their point. It's fine if there's a rating system, and it's useful even in determining what content is appropriate for children. However, they have absolutely no right to dictate to a full grown adult what they should or shouldn't watch (which is exactly what they do by providing a rating knowing theatres won't pick it up even if they want to).
- riptor666, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1Definitely agree on Requiem for a dream but the ending is just the best part, nothing beats two women sharing their toys...
- huertanix, on 10/02/2008, -0/+1In b4 Sex and Lucia.
- Yage2006, on 10/03/2008, -1/+2dugg for Requiem for a Dream which actually steered me away from most drug use.
- inkubusfan, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1Kids?!?
- sandersdamnit, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1***** REQUIEM SUCKS!!
- chief2224, on 10/03/2008, -0/+0Dugg for "Kika"! Not Almodovar's best but still very, very good. "Requiem" gave me nightmares. Seriously, awesome movie but way disturbing. Oh, and "Showgirls" was Gina Gershon's best role yet (except for her Sarah Palin impersonation).
- stwauve, on 10/22/2008, -0/+0I'd say its not porn but boy do they know how to compose a long shot.
