The Hulk's CGI Finally Gets Upgraded!
firstshowing.net — I ran across a new TV spot today and noticed some freshly upgraded CGI. Not that this wasn't expected, but there are some enormous differences between now and two months ago. Care to take a look?

- toastgodsupreme, on 05/20/2008, -10/+203OMG! Detailed hair and a piece of ripped shirt! These upgrades are vastly superior.
This is like what Windows ME was to Windows 98.- sephiroth965, on 05/20/2008, -6/+28Agreed. The only differences here are they gave him ripped shirt and they went lighter on the shadows. Buried as lame.
- AzureRise, on 05/20/2008, -2/+14Agreed. This isn't worth an article. Everyone should bury this as lame.
- gllopc, on 05/20/2008, -1/+8Agreed.
- dezmo, on 05/20/2008, -1/+7Agreed.
- VegaObscura3, on 05/20/2008, -2/+4I disagree. What are you doing with that stick? OH SHI
- popfrogs, on 05/20/2008, -1/+6So, what, now he's 75% more plastic-looking? The CGI still looks like crap. They need to go have a talk with the dudes who did Iron Man.
- BearinG, on 05/21/2008, -0/+2I thought the first image looked better.. the bottom one looks more fake and washed out.. like a cheap LCD screen.. they screwed the blacks.. looks a bit more saturated..
- noots, on 05/20/2008, -1/+7they have actually rendered it with a new shader for the skin too. It's much better imo - although not amazing.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+7He seems way too glossy for me. I think they need to give him more of a matte finish. That's the only thing really putting me off about this design. Seems like a gooey Hulk.
- AzureRise, on 05/20/2008, -2/+14Agreed. This isn't worth an article. Everyone should bury this as lame.
- zephyr42, on 05/20/2008, -0/+12so hulk is going to default to a 169.168... IP address and never let it go even after upgrading drivers and finally removing the card and throwing it across the room?
I think his hands are too big...- RudeTurnip, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1Jeepers creepers...I'm going through this right now with an old Inspiron laptop, Win 98 and a Linksys USB NIC....get out of my brain!!!!
- Vegiemaster, on 05/20/2008, -3/+3But... but... they made him more brown! That makes everything better!
- nynety, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2As an Indian, I have to say I agree.
- popfrogs, on 05/20/2008, -3/+1Sorry to disappoint you but no over-amped obnoxious 30 minute dance scenes are scheduled. You can probably go ahead and skip this one. The Love Guru, however, might be more up your alley. ;)
- nynety, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2As an Indian, I have to say I agree.
- Bob24, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3What I want to know is how that shirt has even stretched that far and still not completely come off.
- MOJIRA, on 05/20/2008, -3/+2Uh, Windows ME was a step down from 98.
- musicbear, on 05/20/2008, -2/+4Still looks like a fake gumby doll that doesn't fit in with ANY of his real surroundings. This could be the failure they don't need (a second time!!) with the hulk.
- xenoc1de, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5The background went a step in the wrong direction.
- julianp, on 05/20/2008, -2/+1Seriously! I looked at the two pictures for a long while before reading the caption and came to the conclusion that the top (original) image was obviously the new one -- because everything in the background looked so real and detailed.
- sephiroth965, on 05/20/2008, -6/+28Agreed. The only differences here are they gave him ripped shirt and they went lighter on the shadows. Buried as lame.
- ssn697, on 05/20/2008, -9/+121Please be a good movie. Please be a good movie...
- xalax, on 05/20/2008, -5/+9I would like to believe that too.. but rebooted... revamped... I still think it gonna suck
- Microfoot, on 05/20/2008, -2/+25Iron Man has me optimistic about Marvel films.
- ZeroFive1, on 05/20/2008, -0/+10Edward Norton?
- Dwebtron, on 05/20/2008, -3/+5why? If it's not, they'll just re-do it again. Third time's the charm!
- derdrache, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Isn't this the third time already??
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099387/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286716/
Granted the 1990 one looks like it was a made for tv movie, just saying... - Dwebtron, on 05/25/2008, -0/+1eh i'm 19; it'll be the third one I remember lol
- derdrache, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Isn't this the third time already??
- autonomic, on 05/20/2008, -0/+8have no fear, edward norton is here. everything that man is in turns to gold.
- maelnum, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3He cured my leprosy!
- SuperWinner, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3Director Louis Leterrier, game over.
- UNEXPLODEDduck, on 05/20/2008, -5/+18Thank god for that, still don't think it's enough though.
- danomagnum, on 05/20/2008, -3/+3He's still way too big
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+4He's supposed to be huge.
- newbill123, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2When you hear special effects houses describing how particular scenes in a movie took weeks to render, the cynical suspicion surfaces that render time will be prioritized for the scenes that directly correlate with profit: scenes used in the advertising.
- danomagnum, on 05/20/2008, -3/+3He's still way too big
- duddy, on 05/20/2008, -2/+75Looks like they added the reality (Read: Brown) filter.
- Elliuotatar, on 05/20/2008, -1/+4That's just one scene you're looking at in the photo. Which is lit with orange light. So it makes perfect sense for green skin to look darker and more brown in those conditions.
The lighting on the new model is a lot more realistic. The hair looks better. The clothes aren't on him in every scene... and why would they be? It wouldn't make sense for his shirt to rip the exact same way every time he transforms.
Sure, it might look blurrier, but that could be due to the plane of focus at that particular moment. Whatever the reason it's probably there to make it match more with the rest of the scene. A sharp model might look neat in a still, but it will look out of place in the movie if everything else at the same depth is twice as blurry. - BlueCadenza, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2The "CG" isn't getting "better." Funny how little knowledge the writer has of computer generated animation. It will take the better part of those TWO MONTHS just to re-render the entire movie with "upgraded" Hulk scenes, not to mention the huge amount of man-power. You don't just go click "add veins here" click "add more muscles here" click" click "make more human." Then click F9 "render" and - bam- your movie is instantly better. You could re-render parts of a scene with corrections by re-doing a few seconds here and there, but remember, scenes with Mark 3 from IronMan took over 3 hours PER FRAME (24 of those per second).
What is being done is considered post-processing. Adding 2d effects like lighting and I'm guessing the shirt was matte-painted for that still-shot and if not its not hard at all to put it on top of an already rendered scene for a short duration.
But don't be fooled into thinking they've redone the Hulk for the entire movie. I believe its all been rendered and final.
- Elliuotatar, on 05/20/2008, -1/+4That's just one scene you're looking at in the photo. Which is lit with orange light. So it makes perfect sense for green skin to look darker and more brown in those conditions.
- MetaMars, on 05/20/2008, -30/+17Didn't you say you were going to stop submitting stories if digg didn't like you?
We don't.- NeoCortex, on 05/20/2008, -3/+28At least he doesn't submit pictures of ***** anteaters.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2Sarcasm? http://digg.com/pets_animals/F_k_You_I_m_an_Anteat ...
- negativenancy, on 05/20/2008, -6/+14***** you buddy! (I'm an anteater)
- H0tKarl, on 05/20/2008, -4/+5I'm not your buddy, guy.
- hbeierg, on 05/20/2008, -3/+3I'm not your guy, friend.
- Dwebtron, on 05/20/2008, -2/+2I'm not your friend, guy.
- threepio, on 05/20/2008, -4/+16Digg isn't you. And you most certainly don't speak for me.
- NightVortez, on 05/20/2008, -4/+10I like him, there goes your theory.
- NeoCortex, on 05/20/2008, -3/+28At least he doesn't submit pictures of ***** anteaters.
- Alix7, on 05/20/2008, -4/+67They need to tighten up the graphics some more, fix level 3
- SuperWinner, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Is that anything like rule 34?
- scubastza, on 05/20/2008, -13/+22They need to loosen up his pants a bit. Looks to me like the Hulk has MrBabyDick.
- s0m31john, on 05/20/2008, -15/+109LEAVE MRBABYMAN ALONE!! LEAVE HIM ALONE!!
- RSS14, on 05/20/2008, -5/+21Didn't you learn from the last time you got massively buried that Mr. Baby Man is a digger just like us?
- mark076h, on 05/20/2008, -10/+2MrBabyMan is not just any old digger, he is the #1 digger http://www.chrisfinke.com/digg/top1000users.html
- FoxMcCloud, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3MrBabyMan supporter vs non supporter... we don't need a digg civil war here
- mark076h, on 05/20/2008, -6/+33MrBabyMan rides again
- Jeepy, on 05/20/2008, -7/+97Don't get MrBabyMan angry, you wouldn't like him when he's angry.
- nmcvicke, on 05/20/2008, -4/+20Don't even care
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/20/2008, -6/+17Why do they have such a big problem rendering Hulk CGI?
http://www.factology.com/hulk_bill_bixby.jpg
I remember the movie they did 2 years ago that bombed had parts of his thigh peeking through his pants as he destroyed tanks in the desert because the CGI model wasn't rigged properly.- governorkrell, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2I believe that was only in the workprint that made the rounds on the internet even before the movie.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1This proves nothing!
- governorkrell, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2I believe that was only in the workprint that made the rounds on the internet even before the movie.
- IDIGTHEDIGG, on 05/20/2008, -15/+62I thought that MrBabyMan quit.... knew he was bluffing
- richlizard24, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3Just like last time, when the algo changed.
- richlizard24, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3Just like last time, when the algo changed.
- Nobiting, on 05/20/2008, -8/+5wasn't there a hulk movie a few years back?
- badjoke, on 05/20/2008, -2/+7Yeah, and it sucked. Another director is trying again from the start.
- bCabulon, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1I liked it. It felt more like a comic book than any of the other marvel movies. It did need a better Bruce Banner. Eric Bana isn't convincing as a nerd. Oh, yeah, the script was weak too. Still, it was put together in an interesting way.
- dylio, on 05/20/2008, -1/+11We don't talk about that movie....
- badjoke, on 05/20/2008, -2/+7Yeah, and it sucked. Another director is trying again from the start.
- scarz99, on 05/20/2008, -13/+4Hillary ftl
- etx313, on 05/20/2008, -1/+5Shut up asshat.
- clearwaterlab, on 05/20/2008, -2/+13Now... will they update the CGI in the new Star Wars movie? Cause that could definitely use it.
- mlostracco, on 05/20/2008, -3/+11One screen grab? That's it? Meh.
- crimson117, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1Agreed... one screen grab does not = enormous differences.
- zerhynn, on 05/20/2008, -2/+46I am Jack's unbridled rage.
- ultraJesus, on 05/20/2008, -1/+6I am Jack's giant green penis.
- endlessoul, on 05/20/2008, -0/+12I am Jack's colon. I get cancer, I kill Jack.
- indypunx, on 05/20/2008, -4/+2Too soon?
- MarioWhereRu, on 05/20/2008, -12/+8HULK SMASH!
HULK RAPE!- SmellyFingers, on 05/20/2008, -2/+6I wish there was Hulk rape porn. Until then, I'm just have to stick to regular rape porn.
- Chainheart, on 05/20/2008, -3/+3NSFW: http://www.cyberfantasies.org/thumbs3/hulk0041.jpg
- solid12345, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Who woke up one day and decided "hey i'm going to render out some 3d hulk porn?"
- centran, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4Hulk can't rape... that would make hulk happy and hulk happy is Bruce Banner.
- etx313, on 05/20/2008, -2/+20Tyler durden?
- H0tKarl, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Jack?
- emailingRob, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Mom?!
- loquax, on 05/20/2008, -0/+9The first rule of Hulk is that you do not talk about Hulk.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1No, the first rule of the Hulk re-do is you do not talk about it being a Hulk re-do.
- ZenMojo, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Too late, I read Banner...shooting himself in the head will not nonsensically kill the Hulk.
- maelnum, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Wouldn't exactly join a fight club if rule #8 gets me up against the Hulk on my first meet.
Lose a few teeth, meh.
Become a quadrapalegic, no thank you.
- MarioWhereRu, on 05/20/2008, -16/+11Buried for Mr BabyMan
- joshua5, on 05/20/2008, -7/+3OMG upgraded hair and torn clothes! excuse me while I do my dorky dance!!!! /sarcasm
- cyclades, on 05/20/2008, -2/+14Still looks cheesy.
- InfinitySnatch, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3It's the Hulk.
- MOJIRA, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4How can you make a giant green monster not look cheesy? It looks like the comic.
- SuperWinner, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Cant be ***** than the Fantastic Four movies... can it?
- goodposter, on 05/20/2008, -16/+11buried for MrBabyMan
- SwiftKick34, on 05/20/2008, -0/+13I thought that the top was the improved version before I read the caption.
- SmellyFingers, on 05/20/2008, -20/+12MrBabyMan's life just wasn't the same without Digg. By not the same, I mean he just sat around and jacked off to Kevin Rose's picture. Wait, he managed to fit that in before...
- dpowre, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1can someone explain...is this gonna be a new movie or the same story or what
- Ne007, on 05/20/2008, -2/+3This is going to be exactly the same story...but different.
Sorta like the exact same thing they did with Superman.- H0tKarl, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5...Only different.
- Ne007, on 05/20/2008, -2/+3This is going to be exactly the same story...but different.
- mkling176, on 05/20/2008, -13/+37STOP THE MRBABYMAN COMMENTS
- jonisjalopy, on 05/20/2008, -3/+2My biggest complaint of the first one was the CGI so this is good to see. Now if they can give him a better enemy then a tank......
- revenz, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1the CGI was the only thing i liked about the first movie, the hulk look damn good. i think the original hulk looks better than what ive seen of the new one.
- TheWorm, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Barely noticeable unless you look really closely
- wicketr, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2I feel like I'm doing one of those Highlights magazine comparisons. I always loved that page of the magazine.
- uziko, on 05/20/2008, -14/+8***** THING SUCKS!
- theradical, on 05/20/2008, -0/+6Hey he's smashing up Toronto!
- tastypastry, on 05/20/2008, -4/+5You've got it all wrong, the top version is the Blu-Ray version and other DVD.
- Me0wmix, on 05/20/2008, -10/+4Buried for lame, and MrBabyMan spam. Another one to add to the mrbabyman comments. XD
- jb0nd38372, on 05/20/2008, -3/+1Your just jealous cause you dont get the diggs babyman does. Stop being a whiner and start being more creative.
- philiras07, on 05/20/2008, -5/+1hopefully the studio making the new hulk, learned a few things from Iron Man.
(I seriously hope this doesn't suck!) - Somedude2137, on 05/20/2008, -12/+7So where did MrBabyMan dupe this one from?
- john2kx, on 05/20/2008, -1/+10Slow news day?
- Ocelot13, on 05/20/2008, -5/+6i love how everyone wants to be mrbabymans best friend now.
i love the hypocritical view the digg community has for him.
first, everyone hates him. then he says hes gonna leave. now, everyone is lining up to give him praise.- itsgotyou, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Well, I love him. I wanna be his bestest friend in the whole wide world.
- itsgotyou, on 05/20/2008, -0/+6Well, I hate him. I wanna see him get trampled to death by a hundred thousand flamingos.
- itsgotyou, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Well, I love him. I wanna be his bestest friend in the whole wide world.
- VoxteX, on 05/20/2008, -3/+6Why is this on the front page?
- LittleDas, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3I don't know about massive visual improvements but if I agree with the article on anything, it's that all my hopes for this film rest on Edward Norton. Besides the fact that I think that guy's tremendously talented, playing passive, calm guys who lash out is basically the role he was born to play (see: Fight Club, The Painted Veil).
- cjmal, on 05/20/2008, -1/+15I'm sure im in the minority here, but I still think the CGI looks like *****.
- onedigg, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5but... but... we added a torn shirt!
- leprix, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3I like the higher contrast of the first image
- maelnum, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Yeah, Let's not get too real here. We are talking about a giant green muscle bound mutant who was created from gamma ray bombardment without resulting in cancer or hair loss.
- solid12345, on 05/20/2008, -2/+4Geez I thought Edward Norton really buffed out for American History X but this movie takes the cake! Guaranteed oscar!
- Elliuotatar, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2I'm suprised peopel are bitching about this. You know Iron Man makes an appearance in this right? And Iron Man was good, wasn't it? I saw the trailer for this and I was pleasantly surprised, I thought it was going to be total ***** like the last one. But it doesn't look like ***** at all. It actually looks like it might have tons of smashing ***** and explosions, better acting, and a more interesting plot. I mean just look at bruce there smiling with his green eyes. That's awesome right there.
- Fastfuud, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1What!? No purple pants!!!!????
- nocash23, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2yay! polish that turd!
- supermanky, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1For yoo, a HULKU-
