The Joker: See the Sketches Which Captured The Crazy Look
io9.com — The Dark Knight concept art from legendary comics artist Bill Sienkiewicz shows Heath Ledger's Joker looking more crazed than ever. Sienkiewicz was the go-to guy for TDK, and it's no wonder.

- MOJIRA, on 07/22/2008, -2/+1That might be sarcasm, but that was my exact line of reasoning. (I did however click on the link before I dugg it).
- jperdomo, on 07/22/2008, -7/+1Those sketches are spot on the look of the Joker in the film.
- Grazfather, on 07/22/2008, -3/+10it took me more than two clicks to see more than one related picture. buried

- TimmyGUNZ, on 07/22/2008, -6/+45The Dark Knight is the new Ron Paul, only I don't hate The Dark Knight.
- Tomchei, on 07/22/2008, -9/+1So you hate freedom and like a corrupted city?
I'm confused. - aserer511, on 07/22/2008, -6/+2Are people storming into movie conventions demanding the dark knight win when it dropped out of the running?
I think not
- Tomchei, on 07/22/2008, -9/+1So you hate freedom and like a corrupted city?

- neekolas, on 07/22/2008, -4/+1I'm starting to believe the Joker's going to be a Legend soon. Or maybe I've just spent too much time on Digg.
- Nerdable, on 07/22/2008, -12/+7i am officially over the dark knight
- smacksaw, on 07/22/2008, -8/+6Let's just go ahead and say it right now. Dark Knight for President, 2008.
- msheidi, on 07/22/2008, -1/+0I was really taken by the disappearing pencil. Wow did that catch me off guard.
- MOJIRA, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2Disappearing Pencil for President 2008?
- msheidi, on 07/22/2008, -1/+0I was really taken by the disappearing pencil. Wow did that catch me off guard.
- AndrewDB, on 07/22/2008, -9/+4Ok.. I've seen the movie four times, but even I'm getting sick of all the hype.
- mojoel, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2I was sick of the hype two weeks ago. This coming from a Batman fan of thirty years!
- MOJIRA, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Maybe you're sick because you've seen it four times.
- humboldt79, on 07/22/2008, -4/+2Usually I look at the concept art for a film and think how much more amazing it is then what we saw on screen. This is the first time I have ever seen what was filmed almost entirely be the same thing as the sketch art. I wonder what the sketch art for sonar Batman was like?
- freshyill, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Well this isn't concept art. They were all drawn in 2008.
- BonhamsGhost, on 07/22/2008, -2/+4Sienkiewicz is an amazing artist, no wonder Dark Knight looked so great. I love how ballsy he is, drawing concept art with stipple.
- ucccft, on 07/22/2008, -9/+4Dear Morons:
ENOUGH! Now please STOP!- Cybermaul, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2Why so serious?
- GiJoeBob, on 07/22/2008, -8/+2I am the Bat Man.
- MOJIRA, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2It's "I'm Batman", noob.
- GiJoeBob, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman
"Batman (originally referred to as the Bat-Man and still referred to at times as the Batman)"
Kiss my ass.
- Sagard, on 07/22/2008, -3/+2I would LOVE to have posters of some of these, particularly of the joker.
Anyone know if this is available?- msheidi, on 07/22/2008, -0/+0probably. here in L.A. you can find posters of just about anything. there is an used bookstore/movie poster in burbank, ca called movie world.
- obsolite, on 07/22/2008, -7/+2Wait, another Batman movie came out?
Who's Heath Ledger? Wasn't he in that movie based on a Shakespeare play but set in a high school? That movie SUCKED!- inigomntoya, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Yeah, and that movie where he was a knight and kicked everyone's ass - even though he wasn't a nobleman.
Forget about those roles. They were played by Heath Ledger. Now, the Joker - that may have been him in the makeup, but that wasn't the Heath Ledger I know...- obsolite, on 07/22/2008, -1/+0The Heath Ledger you know is a careless drug user who left his child without a father. But hey, he left a pretty corpse!
The Heath Ledger you know... Oh digg.
- obsolite, on 07/22/2008, -1/+0The Heath Ledger you know is a careless drug user who left his child without a father. But hey, he left a pretty corpse!

- nametag, on 07/22/2008, -6/+0It's all... part of the plan.
- comply, on 07/22/2008, -3/+1woah, Bill Sienkiewicz's Sandman strip is awesome, as is the Joker's latest costume design, and now I find they're done by the same dude. This has blown my (apparently nerdy) mind a little.
- Defuser, on 07/22/2008, -7/+2More Buried BatSpam
- demiurgency, on 07/22/2008, -2/+6Dugg. Not for DK, but for Bill Sienkiewicz.
- danny25, on 07/22/2008, -0/+13Those drawings aren't concept art, they were all done in '08 after the movie was finished.
- thedogfatherx, on 07/22/2008, -5/+3Geez digg people and the dark night are annoying and pathetic. When can I come back to digg and not see 10 dark night stories hit the front page in a day?
- MOJIRA, on 07/22/2008, -2/+1You could block the movies section, or the entertainment section altogether. Otherwise stfu.
- thedogfatherx, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1I blocked you instead :-)
- MOJIRA, on 07/22/2008, -2/+1You could block the movies section, or the entertainment section altogether. Otherwise stfu.
- artfiend77, on 07/22/2008, -0/+7[...somewhere in the region of $1285 million dollars before leaving theaters... ]
1285$ Million? Really? Don't people proof read anymore?- buddyw, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3I heard it was actually $1,285,000 Thousand.
- PopASquatt, on 07/22/2008, -3/+2You people spoiled the pencil part for me, stop your ***** quoting.
- msheidi, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1spoiled sport. the movie is out.
- pizpot, on 07/22/2008, -3/+2whoop-de-do Joker. After Justice League, watching a show about Joker is the biggest let-down.
- Tddupre, on 07/22/2008, -2/+1And here we....oh forget it
- ngageguy, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2Server down in 3..2..oops already gone.
- OzzieAlThor, on 07/22/2008, -2/+4Amazing the bat-fappers on here aren't digging stories about Christian Bale assualting his mom and sister.
Digg, we're non-biased. Except about ***** we like. Then ***** you. - emiller, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1holy slow loading site, Batman.
- jonathansnook, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2I've always enjoyed Bill Sienkiewicz's art. I still have Sandman, The Shadow, Stray Toasters, New Mutants and some pencil artwork that he's done. Ah, I miss the days of spending all my money on comic books...
- dslartoo, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1That's two people that have mentioned Sienkiewicz in connection with Sandman. I read the entire Vertigo series and don't recall Sienkiewicz's art being used for any of it. Did he do some specials or one-shots? Or did he do some art for the earlier non-Vertigo Sandman?
- batmanz, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Actually, compared to those pictures, Heath Ledger as the Joker was pretty chill.
- username7410, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Looks like Ozzy Osborne.
- saketome, on 07/22/2008, -1/+3***** sake, how many Dark Knight/Batman related stories have we seen on digg lately? Over 9000?!?
- zeruch, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2Sienkiewicz is one of the greats, having long been the guy who brought mainstream comic work some serious innovation in the 80s. He was a major influence on guys like Ashley Wood and Dave McKean, and has won about every illustrator award you can.
He was the guy who brought in influences like Klimt and Bob Peak into a then pretty staid environment at DC and Marvel.
Go look for his work with Frank Miller (on both Daredevil and Elektra) or his runs on the New Mutants for Marvel, or The Shadow for DC. - freshyill, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3These aren't concept art. They're just drawings by Bill Sienkiewicz, done long after the filming was complete.
They're great, but that doesn't make them concept art. Hell, they're even dated 2008. If you follow the link through to Ain't it Cool, they're not even mentioned as concept art.
That said, there has to be some actual concept art out there, and I'd really like to see it. - SirFoxx, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2Bill's work on Moon Knight is still some of his best work.
- spaceman84, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1His art for Elektra: Assassin is AMAZING. Probably the best looking graphic novel I've read.
- tresvold, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0wow that is extremley creepy
however my first thought was similar look to what The Crow had backin the day with the stringy hair and painted face. However different concepts but similar looks, at least thats what i thought.
