The Joker: See the Sketches Which Captured The Crazy Look

io9.com — The Dark Knight concept art from legendary comics artist Bill Sienkiewicz shows Heath Ledger's Joker looking more crazed than ever. Sienkiewicz was the go-to guy for TDK, and it's no wonder.

This is the first time I have ever seen what was filmed almost entirely be the same thing as the sketch art. I wonder what the sketch art for sonar Batman was like?

I read the entire Vertigo series and don't recall Sienkiewicz's art being used for any of it. Did he do some specials or one-shots? Or did he do some art for the earlier non-Vertigo Sandman?

  • zeruch, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2Sienkiewicz is one of the greats, having long been the guy who brought mainstream comic work some serious innovation in the 80s. He was a major influence on guys like Ashley Wood and Dave McKean, and has won about every illustrator award you can.

    He was the guy who brought in influences like Klimt and Bob Peak into a then pretty staid environment at DC and Marvel.

    Go look for his work with Frank Miller (on both Daredevil and Elektra) or his runs on the New Mutants for Marvel, or The Shadow for DC.

    They're great, but that doesn't make them concept art. Hell, they're even dated 2008. If you follow the link through to Ain't it Cool, they're not even mentioned as concept art.

    That said, there has to be some actual concept art out there, and I'd really like to see it.

    however my first thought was similar look to what The Crow had backin the day with the stringy hair and painted face. However different concepts but similar looks, at least thats what i thought.
