Versions of Superman in Hollywood, Bollywood and ..
thethinkingblog.com — To be fair, I didn't include the recent big-budget Hollywood version of Superman (2006) along side the relatively old ones of Bollywood and Yesilcam (Greenwood?). Yesilcam refers to the Turkish cinema industry in the same way that Hollywood refers to American cinema, and Bollywood refers to Indian cinema.

- Supurcell, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1How come American remakes to foreign movies can't be done as well as these?
- Supurcell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Don't miss the link at the bottom of the page that sends you to the Turkish versions of Star Wars, Star Trek, ET, Wizard of Oz, and the Exorcist.
http://www.fantent.com/2007/02/04/turkish-star-wars-superman-et-and-more/ - Oxygen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I still want to know what the Hindi Superman is all about. I mean I know Bollywood is all about the singing and dancing, but how does a woman in a Spider man Costume fit into it?
- uranium, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8believe it or not, all bollywood movies are musicals and they all have very similar plot. And the worst, they are ***** 3 hrs long. can't believe how people can sit through the whole thing... there's always crowd of people dancing and singing every few minutes.
But they are fun too watch because you get shocked at the cultural difference and the fact that they are soooo behind compared to Hollywood. Even this Hollywood superman movie was way ahead of the Bollywood movie which came out a decade later! - EsotericBoredom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The turkish superman has no elbows. Every punch was a locked arm roundhouse from the shoulder bitchslap.
- V1be, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Uranium, they aren't behind, they are just different, as linkedlist said.
- hirak99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Although hilarious, the comparison is rather unfortunate. The Bollywood movie shown here was a B-Grade movie. It was made for the the general Indian population who do not even understand the concept of Superman in a scientific manner. There are other popular Hindi serials shown in Indian TV which are 'based' on Superman and other well known characters. The degree of 're-imagination' that the producers manage to achieve is truly ridiculous. I remember once there was a show on Phantom to come on the Door-Darshan channel, only to find to my utter surprise and shock that the only thing matched with the real Phantom was the costume. When they went ahead to show Phantom was a devout Lord Shiva worshiper, it leaped all bounds and that was since when I stopped watching that channel.
However, it will be wrong to stereotype all Bollywood movies based on this. The modern day movies, like 'Rang De Basanti', 'Ek Haseena Thi' (No songs), 'Iqbal' and many many others live up to the Hollywood standards wrt script-writing, direction & cinematography. On the other hand, Hollywood produces unpalatable movies also (even though not as frequently as Bollywood does). If anyone has seen 'Batman & Robin' will recall despite having a cast of very capable actros/actresses, what a massacre it was. The movie was below any level of standard in any aspect (including special effects), even though it was produced in the recent past, and is even incomparable to the Superman of 1978. - drathosX3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Fighting evil powers through dance...
- xGORDOx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Only one word can sum up Turkish Star Wars and that is...
Trampolines.
or
Beheadings.
...I can't decide. - citsym, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Recently Krrish was released. It resembles superman in someways.
An action scene form that : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eApU3E2ihww&mode=related&search= - citsym, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not all Bollywood movies are like that. But unfortunately most are.
There are 5-10 good movies a year though. Among movies released this year, I would cite the examply of Parzania. Its definitely not a musical. Its not song and dance. Its serious stuff. Watch it, if you get a chance.
- Saboma, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Digg it!
- PaulLev, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Nice take on the worldwide phenomenon! http://paullevinson.blogspot.com/2007/03/why-man-of-steel-did-so-little-to-stop.html
- spookyttws, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22There are so many things wrong with that Bollywood one. Why is Spidergirl flying with him? Why are they dancing in the sky, for that matter, Why is everyone always dancing?
- V1be, on 10/15/2007, -3/+23That's how we do it in India. If there isn't dancing, it's not Bollywood. As for Spidergirl flying...if there isn't terrible directing, it's not Bollywood either.
- richdiggs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21The reason everyone is dancing in Indian movies is because all Indian movies are musicals. The reason for this is that not everyone in India has a TV and for the longest time going to the movies was the top source of entertainment. So most movie-makers to this date try to make it into a "full entertainment" for the audience which includes music. There are other Indian movies where people aren't dancing and are realistic, but they are not as popular with the audience as these musical blockbusters.
- crumbelievable, on 10/15/2007, -9/+3I was going to comment "Why is Bollywood so lame?" but now I know! Thanks richdiggs.
- bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7to be fair, the bollywood movie wasnt really about spiderwoman or superman. it was more of a song sequence. In Bollywood its quite normal to have the hero and heroine dancing to tunes in a dream world. Usually the song ends when one of them is snapped out of their reverie when they're rudely disturbed by one of their parents who're hell bent on getting their child married to another rich industrialist's child.
Although as a disclaimer if this post did somehow elevate the status Bollywood held in your mind, I urge you not to be fooled by that idea. Superman or no superman the movies are among the worst you will ever see on planet earth. No wait it gets worse in some of the southern states where Bollywood is looked down upon because of all the things their unrealstic plots.(Anyone remember the dancing/smoking midget??? Just ro refresh your memory heres "Little Superstar" again http://youtube.com/watch?v=gx-NLPH8JeM") - WaltDismal, on 10/15/2007, -9/+0It's not dancing you see. It's convulsions because they're trying to keep from explosive diarrhea from bad Indian food and contaminated water. And the shame of appearing in a totally crappy movie made by a 12-year director on drugs.
And the Turkish one? There's bad and then there's bad. This was Darwin Award bad. Thank god the Turks don't have nuclear weapons. I was trying hard not to throw up in my mouth. ... Didn't work...
- datalife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10holy ***** Superman and Spider-Woman!!!
- allisonaxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4nope, that might be Spidergirl without a mask, (her costume resembles Peter Parker's) but spiderwoman has a different costume (and a different backstory)
what i want to know is this: how the hell did they get Superman and Spidergirl in the same movie? Superman is DC, Spidergirl is Marvel. does india not care about licensing, or is it possible that they licensed both? - cowabuse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ROFL!!!!! A girl with a spiderwomen costume, LMAO Bollywood is on crack!
LOL the chorus: "super super super super maaan"
- allisonaxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4nope, that might be Spidergirl without a mask, (her costume resembles Peter Parker's) but spiderwoman has a different costume (and a different backstory)
- ninjacell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thanks for the link. Hilarious videos ...
- shoguner, on 10/15/2007, -3/+12the Bollywood superman is clearly a multi-talent guy , singing and dancing... , suck it Hollywood !
- Roger, on 10/15/2007, -9/+10I think the word "retarded" accurately describes the Bollywood version.
At least the Turkish version had the sense to rip off the great John Williams score. - djtuttyram, on 10/15/2007, -1/+3Bollywood Superman is Govinda, and this indeed is a dream sequence in the movie. It's not a movie about Superman at all. It's a typical Bollywood Masala Love Action flick. I know this because I am of the brown persusion :P
- appurtenance, on 10/15/2007, -1/+4I've never seen the Bollywood film shown, but as an Indian... it makes me horribly embarassed for my people...
- gavroche, on 10/15/2007, -0/+3The funny thing is that bollywood movies are still like this, only with better quality
- Roger, on 10/15/2007, -9/+10I think the word "retarded" accurately describes the Bollywood version.
- Supurcell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Whoops. Hit the wrong reply button. Bury me.
- psilanthropist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i wonder who the nutcase who dugg that comment is ?
- crumbelievable, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4When it comes to live-action cinema, America pwns.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Yeah, "pwns" at pumping out crappy movie after crappy movie.
Recently the best movies have been coming from overseas. The only advantage American productions have are the outrageously large budgets. - crumbelievable, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Not true. First of all, yes, there's a lot of sh*t coming out of hollywood but at least when 30 million dollars gets spent, you have a movie at the end of it. Check out "lost in la mancha" if you need to see a counter-example. The point is, there is no more efficient a machine than Hollywood at cranking out well-*made* movies. There's a reason why American movies dominate the global marketplace - they're better product.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4=>"at least when 30 million dollars gets spent, you have a movie at the end of it"
And you're proud of that? 30 million should make at least 2-3 movies.
I'm not familiar with Lost in La Macha (though I am a fan of Gilliam), but from the IMDb description:
"biggest budgeted feature film using only European financing, although it is meagre compared to Hollywood standards".
=>"The point is, there is no more efficient a machine than Hollywood at cranking out well-*made* movies."
Depends on your definition of "well-made". Just remember that for every Shawshank Redemption, theres about 100 Dumb and Dumberer's.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Yeah, "pwns" at pumping out crappy movie after crappy movie.
- pvaras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Turkish Superman looks like a Zombie.
- sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Except after he stopped the truck. Notice how he kind of bounces when he runs to the back of the truck? That turkish stuff reminds me so much of old 60's and 70's TV shows but comparing them is an insult to old 60's and 70's TV Shows.
- unsolicited, on 10/15/2007, -10/+3No wonder none of the Bollywood movies/actors/actresses won Oscar.
- Kii666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Turkish Superman is hands down the best. That ***** had me crying, so damn ridiculous. I mean, come on, Superman leaping out of some shrubbery to bitch slap a random goon? AWESOME
- monkeyrun, on 10/15/2007, -2/+1wow .... Superman and SpiderGIRL together !? ...
- Mightyuser, on 10/15/2007, -3/+0Perhaps the movie title "Superman glued to Spiderwoman: you have you shake it"+deleted scene from Bruce lee :)
- incu_vamp, on 10/15/2007, -0/+2I think i have a copy of that bollywood version somewhere in my house, theres even a new bollywood movie thats the exact clone of sin city. I also think theres one for daredevil, which actually isn't all that bad.
- H0tKarl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If I had dance moves like Indian Superman, I'd totally be able to tap Spidergirls hot ass.
- sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah, something about those indian chicks makes my pants go crazy.
- echoforever, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Indian cinemas have a knack of breaking Newton's laws. If Newton could have traveled in time and watch a Hindi cinema, he would have committed suicide.
- Sabretou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, that is a B-grade movie, you can't contest there. And I think it was actually a mock at Spidergirl/Superman and not a serious movie in itself. Alright, maybe Bollywood was very bad before, but it is improving (albeit a tad slowly). A lot of new movies are great.
Regardless, that was hilarious. :D - nephilimx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Turkish Video is from a comedy series, I dont think you can count him as a "version"
- mkc509, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another Indian version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlZFMnX0xxA
Language: Telugu - Spideristic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I had seen that Bollywood film when I was kid during the late 80s...the entire movie has nothing to do with Superman nor Spider-Woman. It was just a moment of escapism via imagination for the couple. They once end up in a shopping mall, where they notice these two superhero costumes in one of the stores. And the next five minutes is that musical.. flying and dancing.
Although Bollywood still continues to use storylines/music etc from Hollywood and other places, its not bad as it used to be like 10 years ago, copyright infringement will result in huge lawsuits these days, since Bollywood is becoming more popular globally, so they are indeed taking measures by obtaining proper rights for the materials they intend to use. Of course many will still continue to rip off other people's works and will tag it as ...." I was inspired by that...blah blah blah" - ohsin, on 10/15/2007, -0/+5funny people actually thinnk here that bollywood version is movie on superman LOL .it wasnt
but its funny as hell - bejeezus, on 10/15/2007, -3/+0Bollywood sux!!! The new movies are pretty much like the old ones. Storylines are abysmal. The dances are ridiculous. This spiderman thing is not really far off :D. As for the turkish movie well to make a actual superman movie like that its pretty sad atleast the bolloywood thing was still a dream sequence :D
- rustyocean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the real indian super hero http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dughTeycVww
- omer209, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Dam, Hollywood's 1978 version looks better than our 1987 one...
- jaydoj, on 10/15/2007, -2/+1Superman? This is CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP!! (kicks movies into bottomless pit)
which crossover is it where Superman and Spidey do dances and feign making out
(cue over used 80's synths) - desiTek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i saw that bollywood movie long time back it was not superman movie at all. it was just the song he was dreaming of in movie. That movie is actually about three brothers.
real super man was released long time back in india it had Dharmender!!!!! and yeah movie was inspired by hollywood version - mrchi03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good God that bollywood superman was horrible. The cinematography was atrocious. I was expecting a little better than hollywood superman because they were a decade later!!! Kinda makes me appreciate hollywood cinematography a whole lot more.
- desiTek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1here is the link http://www.stomptokyo.com/movies/s/superman-indian.html
Puneet Issar as superman , Dharmender his god father and Puneet Issar has got great muscle - mds76, on 10/15/2007, -1/+1Re: Bollywood version-
AFRICAN ANTEATER RITUAL!!! - layeroffrost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the turkish one makes superman look like a robot lol...and the bollywood one was hilarious..mind you everything bollywood i've seen makes me laugh
- sarahes, on 10/15/2007, -0/+1lets not forget about the bollywood version of thriller...its my favorite!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbvP7dT3Dx0 - sjbdallas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK, i've looked the second link with all the other turkish versions of movies. Close as I can tell, the turkish ET should have been the Turkish Exorcist because that was just damn creepy. And the Turkish Star Wars didn't make sense at all. It had Indiana Jones music and clips from Star Wars that look like they were filmed by a handheld camera pointed at a TV. I don't get it.
Oh, and Turkish Star Trek? Not that bad, but isn't that Turkish Superman playing Turkish Captain Kirk? - glue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought "Bollywood? Where's the hell is the dancing?"...and then 30 seconds in...
I wasn't disappointed. - alexhuyalegzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0E..... I'm not impressed. Butt dugg it for some reason.
