Where did the Joker come from? A brief history(PICS)
latimes.com — Christopher Nolan's film, "The Dark Knight," certainly doesn't give us any clues. But though the character has many versions of his origin in the fictional world, his actual history is a multimedia mash-up of drawing. But to understand where Ledger came from in his acting, you have to go back to see the characters development over the last 68 years.

'The Killing Joke' (1986) - "Cited by many as the single most influential Joker story, this standalone graphic novel by Alan Moore told the Joker's origin, showing him as a failed stand-up comedian who turns to crime and becomes deformed when he jumps into a vat of chemicals during a factory break-in."
This factory/vat background story existed way before 1986. I had a "Secret Origins of the Super Heroes" comic (tabloid-sized) from the '70s that showed this story. As I remember, he had some kind of impregnable iron hood before he fell into the vat and became the Joker. - Rage67, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6I had no idea mark hammil was the voice for the joker

Ha ha ha. Hahahaha. Ha ha ha. Now that's funny.- SirBruce, on 07/20/2008, -0/+46It was actually a very close vote, and right up until the end the editors expected Robin to live. But a lot of fans didn't like the new Robin (Jasonn Todd); the original Robin (Dick Grayson) had since gone onto how own career as Nightwing. Batman's portrayal had been growing progressive darker over those yars and having a brightly-colored kid sidekick was just out of place.
- jbrand45, on 07/20/2008, -1/+26yeah, Jason Todd sucked. I've always liked Tim Drake as Robin the best. He was a character I could more closely relate with then either Grayson or Todd.
Plus, Dick Grayson was much cooler as Nightwing anyway. Better costume, better attitude.

- SirBruce, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4The prominence of comic book deaths has ultimately led to the readership rarely taking the death of a character seriously - when someone dies, the reader feels very little sense of loss, and simply left wondering how long it will be before they return to life. This, in turn, has led to a common piece of comic shop wisdom: "No one stays dead except Bucky, Jason Todd and Uncle Ben"[1] referring to Captain America's sidekick (reported dead since 1964), Batman's second Robin (dead since 1989), and Spider-Man's uncle (dead since 1962), respectively. This long-held tenet was finally broken in 2005, when both Bucky Barnes and Jason Todd returned to life.

- selfobsessed, on 07/20/2008, -10/+174"Heath Ledger already had buzz for his performance in Christopher Nolan's grittier follow-up to " Batman Begins" before his untimely death in January. His version of the Joker -- sloppier, grimier and not as comic as Nicholson's -- has already become a polarizing benchmark for those who want to debate which actor had the best Joker performance."
Ha, debate? Ledgers performance blew Nicholson's out of the water.- skyshock1, on 07/20/2008, -0/+66Agreed. Nicholson was just Nicholson in facepaint. Ledger gave us a complete psychopath.
- JB449, on 07/20/2008, -8/+38I have to disagree. The two movies are very different. Each performance was great and appropriate for the mood of their respective films. You are comparing an apple to an orange. Although I must admit, I enjoyed Ledgers/Nolans portrayal of the Joker better than Nicholsons/Burtons.
- Rage67, on 07/20/2008, -2/+11you just agreed
- recruz, on 07/21/2008, -3/+1hahaha - you fail
- usaf1984, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4Wow you two fail at understanding jb's comment.
- teamgwho, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4He didn't agree Skyshock. Yes he liked Heath's performance better but he didn't agree that it "blew Nicholson out of the water". And I am of the same mind. While heath's was oscar worthy, you really can't compared the two films, the two actors or the two performances as they are very different. Although there are numerous lines of Heath;s that I loved, I am still very fond of
"This town needs an enema!"
and
"Bob, gun Boom!"
- spookyttws, on 07/20/2008, -1/+22Between the voice, the paint, the scares, and the mannerisms (the licking of the lips) I truly felt like I was watching a real life manifestation of the Joker, and not an actor playing the Joker. His voice training really paid off, I could not tell that it was Ledger.
- Iztikeit, on 07/20/2008, -3/+8Nicholson was closer to the comic book Joker, Ledgers was a more modern and darker interpretation.
I liked the Dark Knight better, though, by far.- happyfundave, on 07/20/2008, -0/+10I'd have to disagree, while the image of Nicholson was lifted right out of the comics, the character of the joker in Nolan's movie is straight out of the comics he sited as his main influence.
- recruz, on 07/21/2008, -2/+1I can only hope that the Joker characters are straight out of the comics ...
- mk1gti, on 07/21/2008, -5/+3I think Ledger's was the closest to the comic book version by far, the Joker is not a wacky funny guy like in the original TV series (which badly misrepresented the Batman character by the way) or Nicholson's portrayal in the Tim Burton films but a cold blooded killer who through clear madness from time to time engages in sick humor you feel guilty (but not too much) laughing at.
- ansatsu29, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2Nicholson just gave us a maniacal laughing clown for a joker. But Ledger, gave us a complete psychopath...the one that might really scare our ***** out if it existed for real.

Best thing the Joker ever did. - sfour, on 07/20/2008, -7/+8I would digg this if it actually showed some kind of evolution. Maybe had a date with any given photo. Because this didn't answer the question, "Where did he come from?"
- Ouze, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3As a long time comic fan, I can explain why there wasn't: because it's a simple question with a complex answer. Comics in general have so many reboots, and conflicts, and retcons, there are many (or no) correct answers, depending on what you want for your source.
I prefer the origin from the 1989 movie version of batman, it's got the nicest symmetry.- recruz, on 07/21/2008, -1/+3It's simple. Kill the Batman.
- teamgwho, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1it also dovetails with the explanation in the comics (which I did not know till now)
- mecharabbit, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3In the comics, was it the guy who would become the Joker that killed Bruce Wayne's parents like in the 1989 movie, or was that just made up for the movie?
- ahmedb07, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1All the photos have dates and they explained where the idea of the joker was inspired from....you should read.

- burkhartmj, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4It was re-released this past march or the one before. It was recolored by the original artist to be more bleak and realistic instead of the trippy coloring of the late 80's and early 90's. It looks freakin sweet.

- RikkiTikki, on 07/20/2008, -1/+5Then I'll associate the Joker with Heath's interpretation

- fuzzynyanko, on 07/20/2008, -0/+10Hamil's Joker had so much class. When I saw "The Batman", they replaced Hamil with a Joker that was more of a WWE wrestler, but tried to emulate Mark Hamil. It didn't work
- twishart, on 07/20/2008, -0/+14I had no idea Hamill voiced the joker. And I watched the hell out of that show.
Hamill respect +1- BedPost, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4You haven't given all of your respect points to Mark Hamill already? I'm going to need you to hand over your geek card.
- SirBruce, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Hamil played "The Trickster" on the live-action Flash TV series, which was in many ways a Joker rip-off. You can clearly see the evolution of Hamil's performance from that character to his version of The Joker in Batman animated series.
- PilotHead, on 07/20/2008, -0/+10It's funny, this is actually a short list, there is still a few more versions of the joker. The strangest one for me is still Frank Miller's Joker from The Dark Knight Returns. Very effiment but scary at the end

- GIScope, on 07/20/2008, -10/+5let me tell you, I've just waken up after the night at the movie theater (midnight to 3am) and I am still under the effect. The Joker was the masterpiece of the whole movie. Hedger just delivered the most sinister, villain and maniac joker I have ever seen. I really felt that the other performances were ridiculous at certain moments of the movie, especially the voice of batman and the funny supposed to be generated by him vanishing in a blink of an eye without notice. Some of the scenes I would laugh about in a batman sequel were just "ruined" by the high tensioned humor of the joker. I have really felt the confusion and the anarchy THE JOKER was spreading in Gotham city, in the audience attention.

And no, I don't get *at all* why this particular page would be on this site... but go figure...
http://www.adherents.com/lit/comics/Joker.html- gkzhang, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4I don't know if I would call DKR a direct inspiration for the new Dark Knight movie. I'm sure Nolan and crew took a few aspects from DKR, but I think they took a lot more from A Killing Joke and Year One, and possbily Long Halloween and Batman: The Man Who Laughs.
- pennvneff, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4Frank Miller's DKR along with Batman Year One, were really the two major catalysts for Batman's revival back in the early '90's. When people thought about Batman and Joker before DKR, it was usually associated that old tv show. People didn't take the story or characters seriously.
Without DKR and Year One, nobody would have been interested in him again. I still remember when DKR came out, people went freaking nuts for anything Batman related and it's why Killing Joke had such the big following it had.
And it's also why Warner Brothers came out with the Batman flick staring Michael Keaton.

I thought he was actually quite hilarious, like the frame where he's pushing the button over and over to blow up the hospital. The way he's standing, and the look on his face, combined wiht the nurse's uniform, was really classic. It was just a much darker type of comedy.
- freshyill, on 07/20/2008, -1/+9One of the funniest scenes in the movie. I'm not sure that's what they meant by comic though. I think they meant comic, like comic book, with more stereotypical over-the-top-ness, not ha-ha-ness. If that makes any sense.
- XeN0cidE, on 07/20/2008, -3/+4Something good coming from the L.A. Times. I'm impressed!
- Wootstapler, on 07/20/2008, -2/+1Horrible picture of Joker from TDK. Could of had a way better one featured.
- Princeamor, on 07/20/2008, -11/+2Heath Ledger really overshadows Chris Bail in Batman, plus Chris Bails lisp really came out in the movie and its really annoying...
- bjs3171, on 07/20/2008, -1/+9what lisp?
- bane18, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8Chris Bail?
- directive0, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6I just read "the killing joke" the other day and I have to say that the joker is actually FRIGHTENING in his homicidal insanity in that comic. What he does to Gordon's daughter is not as cut and dry as "paralyzing her". Read the comic, it's very very good.
- whatthefu, on 07/20/2008, -0/+11I don't know why people have to debate between Nicholson and Ledger. They portrayed different Jokers of different eras, one more comical and the other darker. They were both great at carrying out their part. I only prefer Ledger's because I prefer the darker aspect, but I still love Nicholson's.
- ganymede2010, on 07/20/2008, -7/+5Ledger was riveting, on par with Ian Mckellens Magneto!
- vango, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2The Times just did a little more indepth story this afternoon on the Joker's history on their comic book blog:
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/herocomplex/2008/0 ... - p51d007, on 07/20/2008, -8/+2I guess I'm the only one who doesn't give a rats a** about the "batman" movies.
- gitboxgreg, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4yes. yes you are.
- freshyill, on 07/20/2008, -1/+5You apparently give enough of a rat's a** (arc? ate? ale? any? amp?) about the "batman" movies to say something in the comments instead of just ignoring this story.
Congratulations, we noticed you! We also noticed how awesome you are for not caring about a great movie. - ravage86, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4Sir, it appears you accidentally stumbled into a Batman submission. Clicking your browser's back button is the best way to get out of it. Nobody here can do it for you, so commenting is pretty futile.
- meatsplash, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0Well then, you might just try reading some of the books if you're not into the movies. I am of course giving you the benefit of the doubt here in not assuming that you came to this thread, knowing that you didn't care about the topic, only to post something off topic and start an argument. I mean, honestly, you couldn't possibly stumbled onto digg and thought, "Man, there sure aren't any posts on here that I like to discuss." right? That would just be stupid and a waste of your time, right?

I don't know why, but I lol'd- bagboyrebel, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3I just want to know how they convinced a jedi to play the roll of the Joker.
- aprocter, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4the jedi had been out of work for years?

- UncleJerry, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2The joker is the son of Captain Spalding...
- seanwuzhere, on 07/20/2008, -2/+1How come in Batman movies the characters never actually look like how they do in the comics?
- happyfundave, on 07/20/2008, -0/+14cause black armored padding translates betting in real life then grey and blue spandex
- Darklyte510, on 07/21/2008, -0/+10Also, Nolan's whole approach was to make Batman and the world that he inhabits to be more believable so wearing armor makes more sense than spandex... Well depending on your activities but I meant for fighting crime :)
- zip000, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6I can't believe there were only 18 episodes of the Campy (corny) 60s version of Batman with the Joker...watching it as a kid, it seemed like he was always on.
- deetank, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1I was thinking the same thing.
