Why the hell are you excited for Transformers 2?

filmwad.com — We have no reason to believe Transformers 2 is going to be any good. The fact that Shia is a bigger star now (and will demand EVEN MORE screen time) and the fact that Jonah Hill didn't join the film because of the script has certainly curbed MY enthusiasm.

      Oh yeah, and the plan to drop all the decepticons into the ocean and hope that everyone just forgets about them - that's a great plan too!

          Is not a defence of lacking any realism in normal actions/items the audience is familar with. Yes OK the robots is far fetched, but that doesn't mean everything that happens in the film therefore should be utterly ridiculous and impossible.

          My god you are completely clueless as to what it took to realize those effects. So lemme get this straight. A chopper made of thousands of CG parts transforming into a giant kick ass robot and blowing up an entire army base with an assortment of deadly weapons including a detachable scorpinox transformer digging into the ground is doing nothing?
          Two giant robots weaving through traffic and one CG robot blowing a real bus in half is doing nothing?
          Hey i have an idea... why dont you just think just for a minute about how you would make a car transform into a giant robot and interchange seamlessly with the actual car or chopper or jet fighter or whatever other mechanical device and back to CG and get back to me when you're done. Think you can model the 2000 plus pieces it took per robot and then animate them all incomprehensibly rotating around until they create a giant kick ass looking robot or match any vehicle of the director's choosing?
          Now think about what it takes to texture and spec all those 1000s of pieces, make them blow up, get damaged and scuffed and match them all to the camera moves etc.
          But then I dont really have to argue with a statement like "you have to do something" despite the effects that were attained with ridiculous realism for our time... really...
          Over 700 million dollars of box office gross disagrees with you. Number 1 gross in the past year, within the top 20 all time domestic and within the top 30 all time worldwide domestic. Yeah I guess people were all watching it for the plot and the dialog and the flawless acting. Apparently the effects were doing "nothing" the whole time.

        It was full of lame plots and nonsense just like you describe - hell, the dialogue was even worse than the movie. The only difference was more screen time for Optimus and Megatron.

        That said the movie was ok. Nothing special. All I expect from the sequel is more sort of familiar giant robots beating the ***** out of each other in interesting looking locales. Hopefully they slow down the camera a bit or at least stabilize it.

It's just as cheesy. Lame dialogue, cornball plots, etc. So actually if you set aside your anti-Michael Bay blinders for a second you'll see that what he did was make quite the faithful adaptation of the original cartoon. You're just too grown up and stuffy to watch it with the same childlike enjoyment that you got from the original cartoon.

          Transformers is pretty much a show/movie you watch by shutting off your brain and enjoying the ride. Focusing too much on the flaws that don't matter for movies like this will just ruin it for you. It's like the people who rag on the new Die Hard movie. Yeah the 'hacking' was ***** ridiculous, but the movie was a blast to watch.

There was almost no story/dialog, just a bunch of poorly animated fight scenes with lasers flying everywhere. And Optimus Prime dies in like the first 1/3 of the movie.         Finally get a quiet moment to use them and get this holographic map to the cube thing and then say "Oh wait! It's actually over here" rendering the first half of the movie completely pointless.

        ummm, scanning things is exactly how the Transformers learn to transform. He went and scanned a better looking car and the transformed into it.

        That being said, it was a good action flick but a ***** Transformers movie.

      Hopefully they will carefully examine what worked in transformers, what didnt, and make an even better movie this time. I was never a transformers fan and wasnt looking forward to that film but I enjoyed it.

        As far as Transformers goes, as bad as the screenplay was, those Visual Effects were some of the most jaw dropping effects I have ever seen. I couldn't believe what they pulled off in that movie. Not for one second did I ever clinch due to poor graphics. I did a clinch a couple times due to the screenplay and directing, but those VFX completely made up for it. Even ILM said it themselves, they never seen such amazing work. So I for one and completely looking forward to number Two to see how far they are going to push those effects.

      Seriously... you get handed the job of writing the screenplay for one of the biggest franchises that could come out of my youth, and they must have said "Hey! This would be GREAT for that really awkward and un-funny masturbation dialogue, and maybe I could throw a pee joke or three in there to top that off!"

      They must have had 50-some-odd people add bits to that script, and the result was one of the most erratic and ***** unevenly paced movies I've ever seen - not helped by the fact that the guy who cobbled that fallacy together in the editing room must have been doing lines of coke the whole time. Do you really need to cut every five seconds to keep a film 'entertaining' now? The only scenes that didn't have an over-use of camera angles were the scenes where the transformers were transforming - which is great, because those over-designed over-detailed piles of walking vomit were already more than confusing enough to watch and know what the ***** was going on without having the camera make it even more difficult.

      The acting, plot, directing and music were all ***** as well. The sound design wasn't bad, tho. It didn't match the editing half the time, but technically it was actually pretty good.

      Wanted - from what I've heard from some trusted sources - is the best action film since the original Matrix. I'm guessing that this is gonna be the film that comes from nowhere to be the biggest hit of the year. There's always one.

If you disagree with any of that, then go back and watch his early stuff, like A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. He single handedly made Disturbia a good movie -- it's not his fault if Indiana Jones 4 sucked.

And compared to other movies of that summer it was one of the least disappointing (Spider-man 3, Shrek 3, Pirates 3, Fantastic Four 2, Simpsons (debatable), etc). The internet was extremely negative about Transformers for the entire year before it was released, yet in the end is was a fun popcorn movie about robots that change into cars (that's not Shakespeare folks). I expect the same to be true with the sequel.

      And I don't get the hate over Michael Bay. He's an action director, that is ALL he knows, action shots. Sure, in most cases, it would be crap, but in Transformer's case, it fits perfectly.

It's called Transformers, not Slutty Chick and Military Dudes (featuring Giant Robots), get it right Michael Bay! Even during the fight scenes the direction and camera-work made the action a little too chaotic to really appreciate the battle.

        I mean, on one hand we had a robot T-Rex battling it out with a robot gorilla, but on the other hand, we still had some coherency. The very least the movie could have done is dropped the hacker subplot (which did nothing for the viewer and went no where and made the movie even less plausible) and come up with a better excuse for entering the city at the end. I don't see why they'd bring the cube to a civilian populated city knowing that they were going to bring so much destruction with them.

But again, the parts that were a hit, were any parts where the military kicked some ass. Examples A and B, the Spectre Gunship scene near the start of the film, and the F-18 scene near the end.

        I THINK they went to the city, so there would be more cover and it would be easier to fight there and wait for the blackhawks to arrive rather than just stand waiting in the middle of the bloody desert. I assume they figured the MASSIVE lost in civilian lives was a worthy trade-off to make sure there's minimal military deaths.

To all the cynics out there...when Transformers 2 comes out, why don't you just stay home and ponder some german expressionism? goddamn pretentious pricks.

      Cool cars? 1) No, none of them were cool. 2) They were all product placement. In movie advertising.
    • Ortheos, on 06/22/2008, -1/+5The film actually has little replay value. After seeing it 2 times i never want to see it again. It is extremely shallow eye candy material. Once the eye candy becomes stale, there is nothing of substance there.

      But on the big screen the first time, it was hunky dory and I dug it. Now I don't dig it. Sue me child.

    Also, this is a cartoon based on toys, stop taking it so damn serious. Get some popcorn, take your friends(or girlfriend if you're not a total scrub) and enjoy 2hrs30min of fun movie.

    Lastly, megan fox bending over the car was worth the 8.50 ticket price .

      And if you'll pay 8:50 just to see an underfed club-rat bend over a car, then you got some serious value-problems. You do realize that YouTube is full of cam-chicks of the same caliber? And it's pretty much free?

        didnt like the first one? dont see the second one, but it sounds like you're so crazy about getting the exact look of the robots correct that you'll be in the theater for the second movie to document every tiny mistake for sharing on the interwebz, instead of having a good time.
