"The researchers surveyed 1,057 members of the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth - a body whose 120,000 student members are within the top five per cent academically in the 11-19 age range.
Asked for their favourite type of music, 39 per cent said rock, 18 per cent R&B and 14 per cent pop. Six per cent said heavy metal and a third rated it in their top five genres.
The heavy metal fans in the study had lower self-esteem and more difficulties in family relationships and friendships."

- TheUngod, on 10/12/2007, -10/+10I wonder what kind of metal they're referring to. Some metal is pretty baseless and meant for just smashing things around. Some is great and amazing to listen to. - incubusnb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19low grades aren't really a valid reference of intelligence, a lot of very smart people have low grades in K-12 and post-secondary. In many cases this can be associated with boredom and lack of interest. It doesn't really matter how smart you are, if you don't enjoy economics or biology, your not going to be motivated to learn it and will usually devote your time to learning something you enjoy doing.
Me for example, I don't consider myself a genius, but I have been considered quite intelligent by my peers, I consistently had low grades in K-12, but i spent a lot of my free time reading comp-sci manuals and references, most people i know consider me the "go-to-guy" for all their computer problems(despite my groans every time they do), but i still do not have my HS Diploma.
Currently I'm in college for Comp-sci, I got in because i spoke with the head of my course and was able to prove to him that despite my HS grades, i have a understanding of the fundamentals behind computers and already knew a few languages. I am consistently on the honor roll in college, yet in K-12 i was usually among the bottom half of my class in marks.
Grading students based on multiple choice testing and quantity of work done is not a valid representation of intellect, nor does intellect guarantee success in any industry. Your typical rig pig can explain to you the dynamics of how to extract oil from the earth, usually with a lot of detail, but don't expect them to find your coding error. A construction worker knows how to build a house and keep everything accurate down to an inch, but most of them could cook a gourmet dinner. Most punk songs are all just mindless 'down with the government' songs -- hey look, I can generalize too! True enough, many metal bands have rather less-than-stellar lyrics, but I can easily name a plethora of metal bands that all have intelligent and deep lyrics as well - a lot of the less radio-friendly bands deal with subjects such as philosophy, religion (not satan), metaphysics, nature, folklore, etc. One of my favorite bands, Agalloch, has an album that deals entirely with Native American mythology and culture.
Oh, and Slipknot is not metal :P - incubusnb, on 10/12/2007, -17/+11"this is BS. every metal head i've ever met was as close to retardation as you can get and still barely function in society"
some bands to read lyrics from:
Killswitch engage
36 Crazyfists
System of a down
Trivium

Rage Against the machine(admitted, ROTM has some R&B and punk influences as well)
Mudvayne
Hatebreed(sounds violent, but some very insightful lyrics imo)
Marilyn Manson (look past the image, read the lyrics, this man is brilliant)

Most intelligent people realize that life isn't about only doing what you like 100% of the time and that getting good grades is the easier way to excel. Even if you like programming there will still be tasks in the real world that will seem just as tedious (if not more) than high school did. While you may have found a back door into college, you should realize that university projects are not what you will be doing after you graduate (unless you don't want to make money). I don't hear many high school graduates saying "if I could do it all over again I would have dropped out of high school". - SmokingPlunger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@ sucks - AC/DC punk? - navitatl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@blinkingbear
I will forever be an advocate of dropping out of high school. Some kids simply don't belong in a classroom.
Take my story for example. I was miserable during my freshman and sophomore years. Class was such a waste of time, and I ended up ditching and smoking weed just to be able to deal with my frustration. After sophomore year, I dropped out and started going to my local community college.
Sounds like a ***** ending? That's not it.
I was 16, and I discovered the amazing thing that is "Internet Freelancing". I used my writing and coding skills to establish a huge portfolio, and I started getting enough weekly jobs to earn more money than my HS teachers. We're talking a 50k salary for a 16 year old high school dropout. Then I was able to fulfill my dream of traveling the world.
Staying in High School stomps out the passions of kids. My passions were writing, coding, and traveling. By dropping out of HS I was able to pursue those passions.
Kids who stay in high school learn to put their passions aside in favor of slaving away and completing all of the *****.
***** high school. And this isn't coming from one of the punk anti-establishment kids. This is coming from a relatively successful person who, if he could do it over, wouldn't even have wasted the 2 years that he did. - Chicken2nite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6God damn rights AC/DC were rock. I'm not bashing punk or anything, but it's a well known fact that the Ramones and The Sex Pistols didn't really know how to play guitar, unlike Angus Young who can play Thunderstruck one handed.

- darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the thing that makes a lot of metal bands "smart" is not that they have a strong political message (although a bunch of bands do have major political themes), but that they advocate individuality and questioning authority in everything they sing about. The gruesome blasphemy, the insanity, the images of hell, the perversity, they all reek of crushing the social norm, of advocating strength in all of it's forms, of being all the you that you can be.

Does anyone else see how ridiculous things like this sound? Maybe it's just me but arguing about what is and isn't metal and coming up with inane "genres" like "stoner rock" is a complete waste of time.
"Slipnot isn't metal," some other genius with way too much time on his hands declared.
Oh really? Because you said so? So anyone who wants to call it metal is now wrong? Does that Slipknot album sound any different depending on what you call it? None of that ***** matters. Obviously some people don't like Slipknot. That doesn't mean they get to decide if the band is allowed in the "metal" category or not, as if that has any bearing on anything anyway.
I mean, let's say for the sake of argument that we all agree that Slipknot isn't metal. Now what? Do all the "real" metalheads have a quiet little chuckle to themselves and pat each other on the back? Is there any real follow up to that or is it, like I suggested, just a huge waste of time?

Listen to anything before the "Black Album".
They are sold-out fake lamo poseurs now.
I'm in my 30's & they kicked ass like no one's business back then. I don't know what happened. Sad, I wonder if Cliff would have gone along with them when they changed. - TomSpearSix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Korn isn't metal? Am I the only one who thinks they are hard rock?

The Genre Police - darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1same thing happened to Machine Head, IMO one AMAZING album that is one of my favorites, then a whole bunch of poser-stuff

- tcybulski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"Asked for their favourite type of music, 39 per cent said rock, 18 per cent R&B and 14 per cent pop. Six per cent said heavy metal and a third rated it in their top five genres.
The heavy metal fans in the study had lower self-esteem and more difficulties in family relationships and friendships."
Wait. so only 6% said heavy metal was their favorite? And yet the geek community goes "OH! THERE'S A LINK!!!" The study didn't really find anything except that gifted metalheads are also more sociopathic.- CapeKid, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1It's higher than in the general population...therefore there is a link.
- mustbepatient, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This study doesn't make sense - would any of the metalheads you know have joined an organization for gifted students?

- glui2001, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I wouldn't agree with the article entirely. There are a lot of metalheads that are losers. Usually the gifted people I notice are the ones who listen to prog metal. It's like snob metal! LOL
- therightclique, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i was going to digg you but you actually said "lol" and meant it. are you 12 and on AOL?
- tehjarvis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Maybe it has to do with the fact that metal goes against the grain of society, and the majority of smarter people can see that mainstream society is full of morons.
- decades, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I agree. A lot of smart people I know listen to metal, as do I. Some people can listen to anything just to be cool or 'in with it', but to understand and enjoy bands like Isis, Meshuggah, Nile, Behemoth, Dream Theater, Megadeth, Pantera, Strapping Young Lad et al, you are smart, but I think we're just wiser too.

- EviLiu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11They say that classical music makes you smarter. Metal and rock and other similar things are the closest modern music to classical, so in my view, I see a connection.
- CycloneNimrod, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Rock Cycle On!
@ Eviliu: How are hardcore solo's anywhere near for example, the baroque period of music? - mrwilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2When I was a teenager the vast majority of gifted students listened to pop music if anything, The metal heads repeated grades/ took vocation training/ or dropped out. Perhaps they meant special needs students
- montyjs, on 11/07/2007, -0/+12I think one thing that a lot of people are missing is that bands like Korn isn't all that metal has to offer. Take into account artists such as Yngwie J. Malmsteen, who draws major influence from Bach and Mozart, or Michael Romeo of Symphony X, who is a virtuoso of guitar. Many metal bands have classical influences, and it would make sense that an intelligent teen would enjoy this because it has all the complexity and intelligence of classical music, and the driving force and aggression of modern rock music.
- bigstinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3*People are going to digg you down because they don't get it. Metal bands tend to have extremely talented musicians. Extreme musical talent equals high intelligence if you ask me. Maybe not physicist smarts, but smarts nonetheless. Go ahead, deny the fact that lamb of god has one of the most talented drummers (let alone their guitarists) in all of music today. You cannot. Maybe you don't like the music, but those who can appreciate skill would agree with me...And there are many many more examples.
*They were when I first replied. - ElectricFuneral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yes, some one else that sees the connection. i am a die hard metal fan, but i also like to explore other music. recently i've been listening to alot of classical stuff. i've always recognized the connection but until recently didn't totally realize. after listening to some of that stuff, then listening to some old school metal (thrash especially, well aside from the "virtuosos") you can really see the musical talent it takes to write (some) metal.
- Bleeblaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Go ahead, deny the fact that lamb of god has one of the most talented drummers (let alone their guitarists) in all of music today. You cannot. I'm not a big fan of metal. The closest things to metal I listen to are Primus and Rage Against the Machine (neither or which I would fully claim to be metal, as their sound is way too different). And I think it's because heavy metal focuses too much on two instruments, guitar and drums. It sort of bores me when the bassist only plays on the same beats as the bass drum or something similar to one of the guitar players or straight eighth notes. It's like they decided to get talented people on a couple of the instruments and then find another guitar player and hand him a bass. It's annoying, and I see little value to it.
That's not to say all metal bands are bereft of a good bassist. Isn't Dream Theater (who I don't listen to) considered metal? I hear they have a great bass player.
Anyway, I think it's a fair observation to make. - bigstinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Bleeblaow
The bass in metal does tend to get buried. Prime example is "And Justice For All" by Metallica. Lately though, the bass has been brought up a notch or two. Mudvayne, which is considered "nu-metal" has a great bass player. Check out some of Buckethead's stuff where your boy Les tears it up. Bands like Dillinger escape plan, Mastodon, UNEARTH, Himsa all have reputable Bass men. It's out there, you just have to find it.
Not everyone is going to like or understand metal. It's a totally different mindset. Personally, I like all music. Old jazz like Coltrane, Thelonious etc, Funk like Parliament, old classics like the Police, Devo etc. I won't limit myself to just one genre.
...But metal, it speaks to me. And if you're metal, you're metal for life. - Stephiems, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think it really depends on which type of metal you are talking about. A lot of things that pass for metal today are disgustingly horrible. A bunch of guys who think that if they play really fast and scream a lot no one will notice they aren't in time and that they suck. REAL metal like Judas Priest, Man o' War, Iron Maidan, Black Sabbath and other bands that might be classified as metal like Rainbow and Yngwie Malmsteen had and do have amazingly talented musicians. A lot of older rock bands had classically trained musicians though. For some reason when you play classical-like music on a guitar, people don't count it.

- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Correlation does not equal causation.

check out 'the Dilinger escape plan' - haggie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think that Lars Ulrich proves that there is no connection between love of metal and being gifted unless you mean Rainman "gifted".
- bdurkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The only thing Lars Ulrich proves is that just because you are in a metal band doesn't mean your not a pussy.
- ElectricFuneral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7lars ulrich doesn't love metal, look what has become of metallica.

Billy Madison: I disagree, it's a very good game, but i think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.
Kid: Donkey Kong sucks.
Billy Madison: You know something? YOU SUCK! - satanatnmtedu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13It is extremely unlikely that there is a direct relationship here. Lots of smart people like classical. So what? The music you listen to does not define who you are or how intelligent you are. I like metal, but it doesn't make me any smarter (have you listened to the lame lyrics?).
Damn. And, the number who said heavy metal was their favorite was 63 out of 1057. Obviously conclusive results. [/sarcasm]- keyboardduder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it doesnt make you smart but it shows you have the self-awareness to carve your own path instead of assimilating into this MTV-fed ***** generation. - Jotunx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Well, I listen to Gothenburg's melodic death metal and plenty of Norwegian Black Metal. I always figured that following all 5 or 6 instruments at once perhaps was more stimulating to my mind as opposed to generic pop music and other genres.
- salvadordali, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I was one of those "gifted", shy kids listening to Maiden, megadeth, metallica, slayer Suicidal Tendencies, Exodus, etc.
All you people saying "I don't know what kind of metal they're talking about.." - They say Iron Maiden and AC/DC and groups influenced by them right at the start.
This is from the UK where Maiden is still one of the most popular bands.
I wouldn't consider AC/DC metal, but hard rock, and pretty mediocre as well.
Though Maiden is a now just a shadow of their former glory, their first seven albums F*k'n rule!!

You are an idiot! You probably listen to Blink 182 and call it punk...LMAO - johnwesely, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Although metal musicians are generally talented the music it self is not really musical, just really fast.
- salvadordali, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Try listening to Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Phantom of the Opera, Moonchild, or a dozen other masterworks of metal by Iron Maiden and you'll be quite surprised, I'm sure.
- keyboardduder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3not musical? listen to dream theater, rhapsody, children of bodom, system of a down. and you tell me that thats not musical. If youre idea of music is some whiny bitch over-dubbed 8 times to make harmony, then thats not music.
