- mrraven200, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1"Damn this music sucks!"
Ironically I am actually in the Phish demographic being a co-op lovin' earthy crunchy Green sort of guy. Fortunately though I have good taste in music tending more towards jazz, indie, 20th century classical, etc. I also despise patchouli and white people with jello dreads, having seen WAAAAYYYYY too many in Humboldt county Cali. when I lived there.
The best revenge is destroying stereotypes IMO.
- triad203, on 10/03/2008, -16/+27 Phish is a talented group of musicians, whether or not you like the jam-band aesthetic. They are classically trained jazz artists who blend a wide variety of music together with more talent and style than . I happen to dig it, and I don't really see why people feel the need to denigrate their music for seemingly no good reason, other than that they like to make fun of "hippies". Just because there is a group of lame druggies who follow around jam-bands doesn't mean the music isn't worthwhile in and of itself.
Oh, and Hagfish rocks your lame ass.- hagfish70, on 10/03/2008, -3/+1Ha. Although I disagree with your opinions regarding Phish, I gotta give you props for the hagfish knowledge!
- Nonplussed, on 10/03/2008, -2/+2They are incredible musicians. Overly long jam sessions, definitely, but when it comes to music don't you always have to pick through some crap to find the real gems?
- catfish182, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2I have no problem with the band myself but after working security for 2 of thier shows and bartender for one of thier shows i can say that i do not like the fans.
They want to dress like hippies (80% of the ones i saw) and try to act like they are hippies but they are selfish and full of themselves. I made no tips (none of the bartenders did that night) and when i did security i had beer thrown at me (for walking by) and was told that i was harassing them when i asked them anything.
- drlha, on 10/03/2008, -2/+1catfish: "All selfish and full of themselves" is how all Hippies act.
PS Triad: We denigrate their music because it sounds like *****. I don't care how great their can play their instruments, they clearly can't actually write a tune. - mrraven200, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2catfish182
Hippy from a can equals spoiled none too bright trust fund baby. The true counterculture these days can be found at web sites like indymedia.org, democracynow.org, etc, and most of the people truly on the cutting edge despise hippies from a can who listen to music from their GRANDFATHERS generation. Support your local musicians of all genres, keep innovation alive IMO. - catfish182, on 10/04/2008, -0/+1mrraven200,
thanks for the note. good stuff
- Spuy767, on 10/03/2008, -10/+4Hoist is a great album. While most Phish fans I know consider that one of the weaker, more mainstream albums, I find its ecclectic blend of various genres of music and its even tempered feel to make it one of the most "marathon" listenable Phish albums.

- xanadu2113, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1i like hoist too, but you need to get some live sets. albums songs just provide the structures for them to jam out..which is where phish is spectacular
- Spuy767, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1I agree, I love the LOOOOONG jam sessions, but you need to be enebriated to REALLY enjoy those, since I listen at work, being stoned is not really an option.

Sometimes it feels good to be in a group of people that aren't pissed off. Yeah, they have their PETA and Green Peace gear on but the whole scene is a lot happier than most other shows. Not too many drunk frat *****, no country rednecks, no perma-frowning gothkins, no chicks that just want to ***** Dave Matthews and yell wooo, no older people that sit and stare without even trying to have fun. Just a bunch of high, happy and relaxed music phans that want to enjoy themselves. I miss it.- martoony, on 10/03/2008, -0/+4well said

- pnunn, on 10/03/2008, -12/+7Oh boy, more tuneless "4-part harmonies" and vacuum cleaner solos! What better to help the economy than trustafarians selling veggie burritos out of the back of their land rovers?
- shadygrove, on 10/03/2008, -1/+2actually, i'd say the parking lot burrito economy is on more solid footing than the macro-economy for one simple reason: it's built on direct accountability. you sell something in the parking lot and the person you sell it to has direct feedback to you...
- pnunn, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1I want to agree with you- really I do- but typically, I think the "direct accountability" system you are talking about, due to current drug policies, specifically benefits the black market economy with little and often no benefit to the "macro-economy." Since the supply funds for the orv burrito scheme have traditionally been a great way to turn a credit card into cash for drugs this would actually seem more like running up unpaid debts for dad... This further unsettling said "macro-economy." I use the quotes solely to point out that you can't suddenly separate the one from the other as though it is some superior system when it finds its capital from the system in question...
I'm all for buying drugs- just not the roundabout way of buying them on credit.

Speaking as a musician, I can say that when you have something special going on musically, it's hard to let go of that. Personal issues got in the way of that special stuff for the members if Phish, but when time passed and they got their individual poop in a group, I'm am sure that something special started to seem much more worth it. I am not a blind uberphan or anything, but I have listened to Phish now since 1991 and think I know a little bit about them as people. I think they miss what they had and want to give it another go. They have the creativity, talent, and drive to pull it off, too.

that coventry gig, their supposed "last show" by nearly all accounts other than just "they can do no wrong adulation" was a disaster. the person who did the simpson parody t-shirt that said "worst ending ever" nailed it... the show was a production nightmare coupled with a band member telling all the stranded "phans" on the road to turn around and go home. what a joke. but as a vendor i started to make good money in the parking lots at phish shows. not sure if i'll hit this upcoming hampton run.- revjustin2, on 10/03/2008, -2/+2I wouldn't mind of you stayed home.

They were much better the 1st time around when they were called the Grateful Dead.- 5xSTUN, on 10/03/2008, -2/+6I've listened to both bands pretty extensively, and there are similarities, but there are some big differences. Phish is more jazz and less country-folk, and Phish front-loads the lyrics on the songs a lot of the time, with a few brief, surreal lines of poetry followed by several minutes of intricate jamming. The Dead would tend to have lyrics throughout, or have lyrics at the beginning and the end of most tunes, often with long jams in the middle.

i think the point that is also frequently lost is that Phish's improvisational capabilities are far above those of the Dead - or pretty much any other band. they were virtually composing new songs out of jams most nights, with intricate interplay between each element of the band. they were SO in tune with what each other was doing that it was almost as if there were 1 big brain telling each of them what to play. except there wasn't - and they all somehow were able to create beautiful music out of apparent nothingness. i'm sure part of that comes from playing sooooo many shows together, but it's something the Dead never were able to fully do. they almost always stayed within the structure of their songs, frequently remaining in the same key except when jamming into another song - and while the Space/Drums and Dark Star/TOO/Playin/Eyes jams were unbelievable, they rarely produced jams that sounded as composed as the actual songs themselves. Phish did that, and did it well on a nightly basis. - ProUSADigger, on 10/03/2008, -0/+0Whoooa, kids. It was just a joke...sort of.
The concept of 'jam band' is not new and, yes, I'm fully aware of the differences between Phish and the Dead. I'm a music lover and amateur performer myself...I was a music major before I switched majors (last century) and have been playing and composing since I was a snot-nose 5 year old.
I do find funny the fact that you guys refuse to acknowledge the similarities between, not only the type of music, but the types of fan. (Loose improvisation around a pretty simple progression surrounded by hippy wannabes)
Maybe you're just not old enough to realize this - not your fault, really.
Loosen up...it's just music and entertainment.
- 5xSTUN, on 10/03/2008, -2/+6I've listened to both bands pretty extensively, and there are similarities, but there are some big differences.
- zenmasher, on 10/03/2008, -1/+7I went to see Blues Traveler years ago and they were playing with this other band which blew me away. Was, of course, Phish. Say what you want. That was a really great show.
