- borez, on 11/23/2008, -8/+8I've never been a guns n roses fan so I come from a completely biased opion, but IMO this is a ***** good album. It's got overtones of Queen, NIN, ACDC and dare I say it Pink Floyd. Digg me down, but I thinks it's a ***** great piece of production.
But I'm only listening to the demo.- araza13, on 11/23/2008, -2/+4Yeah!
Dugg down for mentioning NIN as one of the overtones....
Trent Reznors farts sound better then this album. - borez, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3@araza13: Well yeah, ***** obviously mate, but there are definitely, without doubt, NIN influences within this album.
- DoTheFandango, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1If you listened to one song by them on repeat and then bastardized it, then yes NIN is an influence in the same way Guns and Roses are an influence on this album. They sorta maybe sounds like them but not really.

- dudefaceguyman, on 11/23/2008, -6/+44I've been listening to the album a lot lately. Before the final releases I listened to the demo's a lot. The article is completely right about overproducing.
I really liked the latest Chinese Democracy demo leak before the final release. It didn't have him doing backing vocals to himself; instead it retained his regular voice that would transition throughout the song to classic Axl screams. It was great and kept me interested. Unfortunately he fell back to mainstream industrial sound with the backing vocals on the final release. In Shackler's Revenge it works, Chinese Democracy? Not as much for me.
Otherwise the rest of the Album is quite diverse when you break it down. Yes it's a bit overproduced and some of the notes are "too perfect" which loses a bit of its edge for me. Fortunately after a few listens it really grows on you. Seriously. First listen it sounds pretty mediocre but I'm finding I like some songs a lot more now.
If you just try and think of this as some new band instead of comparing it to old Guns N Roses it's a stellar album.- punkcat, on 11/23/2008, -0/+9everyone wants Appetite part 2 but Axl refuses to admit that was his best work and is obsessed with topping himself.

- dmark77, on 11/23/2008, -5/+42The Howard Hughes comparison doesn't work because when Hughes delivered on his promises, he delivered. Hughes was always hungry, and didn't steal other people's work and call them his own. His projects were always his vision, and he hired the most capable people he could find to build that vision.
Axl. Rose is more like that guy who boasts about how he has a huge penis, and sleeps with tons of women - yet you never see him with one. Then he hooks up with the skank at the party, lasts 20 seconds, and is revealed to have a rather tiny penis.

Gilmour sucks as a front-man. - borez, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1I fell in love with Pink Floyd at a gig my mate dragged me to in Paris in the 90's, I knew nothing ( then ) of Mr Waters or Pink Floyd. Gilmour was the front man at that gig.
My Point: It was the music, not the personality that hooked me... Period. - bjornski, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2You wouldn't give them such a glowing review if you'd seen Roger live. It might not have sucked, but it wasn't all it could have been. I saw them during the "Delicate Sound of Thunder" tour, and while it was a decent show, the Radio KAOS tour that Waters did blew it clean out of the water.
Waters is in-*****-credible. Gilmour pales in comparison. - borez, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1What's with the Gilmour hate? if you listen to " On an Island" you can definitely hear a lot of the Floyd sound, especially the ambient textures. The guy was, no doubt, a major contributor to the overall finished item IMO.
- bjornski, on 11/23/2008, -1/+3And Pink Floyd STOPPED being Pink Floyd after Roger left.
- MadHarvey, on 11/23/2008, -4/+2I'd be totally fine with John and Paul continuing under the Beatles name without the others. I think it is more about whether the primary creative elements are captured in the new lineup.
For Guns n Roses, I'd be ok with it just being Slash and Axl
For Smashing Pumpkins, I'm totally fine with it just being Billy (Jimmy is a bonus).
Radiohead would do ok with just Johnny and Thom.. (And Stanley).- Trav3133, on 11/24/2008, -1/+1screw you are the opinions you have.
- ddalet26, on 11/23/2008, -12/+5That must be some of the worst writing I've read in the context of a rock album. The author writes like he's reviewing Shakespeare. For crying out loud, its a bubble gum guns and roses album. Terrible.
- NWVG, on 11/23/2008, -1/+22It's pretty clear it was written and recorded over 17 years as the songs are so different from one another that they don't even sound like the same band let alone the old Guns N' Roses. Some of the songs like Chinese Democracy and Scrapped have remnants of what they used to be, but the rest of the songs are barely listenable. The overproduction of it all reminds me of Metallica's overproduced last two albums. At least I got a free Dr. Pepper out of the release of the album.

- tomaburque, on 11/23/2008, -5/+22My mini review:
Better than I expected. On the downside there's a lot of "November Rain" type songs with strings and Axl's narcissistic lyrics. But on the upside there's a lot of Buckethead who is a guitar phenom. I think Axl turned Buckethead loose to send a message to Slash, his way of telling his old friend "Suck it". Whatever. Even if you hate Axl Rose, it's still worth downloading, er, I mean buying the album just to hear the amazing guitar work. In the last 17 years Axl's voice has deepened a bit he can still turn on rasp as well has he could on Paradise City. He can sound like a buzz saw cutting meat on pitch and in key when he wants to.
Ignore the lyrics and the 17 years of background drama and I'd give this album 4 out of 5 stars.- mike17032, on 11/23/2008, -0/+6If you like Axl (and to me he was what made GnR), I think you will enjoy the album even more.
- punkcat, on 11/23/2008, -2/+4god i wish he would drop the november rain *****.
- rollingstonex, on 11/23/2008, -14/+5people gotta stop hating. this album is pretty damn good, and as much as i love Slash, the new guitarist is ***** awesome and rocks some crazy original riffs. it's a new band with a new sound. of course it shouldn't sound like the old albums. it's called being original and progressing. btw, this article is suck.
@dmark77 and the other axl haters... poser? are u guys ***** kidding me? do u really believe that Axl hasn't boned tons of chicks? GnR was huge and ***** global. packing stadiums regularly. your comment is suck. haha...- AmazingSteve, on 11/23/2008, -0/+7Which new guitarist? There's like 5 of 'em on there.
- rollingstonex, on 11/23/2008, -3/+1True, but whichever one is putting out the crazy ***** with the twisted fx is ridiculously sick. At 3:20 through the first song u can get a good taste of it. And if u listen to the whole album, he plays riffs almost the whole time axl is wailing...
All albums that don't come out of a garage are heavily produced these days. That's just the nature of the industry. But Axl is still one of the greatest rock vocalists alive along with Chris Cornell. He's got a crazy vocal range and can still screech just like the good old days. I, for one, am a huge GnR fan, and although it will never be the same, I'm stoked to hear some new stuff.- oddtom, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2Say hi to Buckethead: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckethead

- jcroweall7, on 11/23/2008, -2/+8The album's a logical continuation of the more epic pieces on the Use Your Illusions albums... frankly, as a whole album, I like it better than either UYI. There aren't any killer individual songs, though, which is problematic. If this had come out in 1998, everyone would be ***** themselves and their moms over it. Axl is definitely 10 years too late (especially in the age of downloading: why go all the way to Best Buy when you can get it off a torrent?), but I also don't think it's a God-awful mess. It took me 2 listens to start connecting to the songs, and I'm sure after a couple more I'll get more into it. Never enough for it to be a true classic, nor ever enough to be worth a 14-year wait, but a good album.
- Lynxpro, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3Uhm, you can listen to it for free legally on MySpace and you can buy it online via iTunes. And if you don't want it compressed so much, you can pick it up on CD at Best Buy. So with those options, how is not of the modern era? You have choice.
As for the songs, I happen to like "Prostitute" and "If the World" quite a bit. Very listenable.
People are just pissed that the album is a different direction than the older material. That tends to piss off artists when the fan base won't allow for them to experiment or to use the artist catchphrase..."grow".

- ChineseDemocrat, on 11/23/2008, -1/+6and by the way
Axl Rose just killed Dr. pepper

- Corrosionx, on 11/23/2008, -0/+4Dr. Pepper should have put as a condition "a good album"
- tiberone, on 11/23/2008, -2/+3This week's Best Buy ad prominently features this and the Kanye album, while the new Killers album is thrown below with all the other new releases.
What is this world coming to...- CoMpUtErITGuY, on 11/23/2008, -1/+4The who? Killers? Never heard of them.
- mike17032, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2GnR was at one time one of the most popular and successful bands in the world, of course its going to be big news when they release a new album. Even more so when its an album that has been in the works forever.
- tiberone, on 11/23/2008, -1/+4But it's not really GnR...I think eventually people have to realize when something's dead and turn to newer, better things.
I can't imagine anybody but die-hard fans buying this, and I don't see Best Buy's advertising changing that at all. The Killers, on the other hand, could actually benefit from more exposure. As could a couple more bands with new releases this week.
I guess it's all about the money, but musically, the best albums released this week will not be Kanye and GnR. Just my 2 cents - bluechild, on 11/27/2008, -0/+0Sure, it will be all the little "hits" by .. oooh! "The Killers"!
- tiberone, on 11/23/2008, -1/+4But it's not really GnR...I think eventually people have to realize when something's dead and turn to newer, better things.
- Lynxpro, on 11/23/2008, -1/+6While I enjoy The Killers quite a bit, they are still essentially a Duran Duran tribute band and as such, I'd rather have a copy of their live performance at Wembly for the "Astronaut" album on Blu-ray than the new album from The Killers.
- tiberone, on 11/23/2008, -2/+3Fair enough, but would you rather have the GnR album than the new Killers'? What about the new Kanye album?
- Lynxpro, on 11/24/2008, -0/+4Since I don't consider Kanye to be either a musician or a decent rapper, I'd go with The Killers. I'll be buying their new album and the GnR album.
To my knowledge, the Duran Duran Wembly performance is not yet on Blu-ray. I know it was shot on HD though so it's a matter of time. And considering Sony is their music label, I would have thought it would be out on Blu-ray already...
- kurtwinter, on 11/23/2008, -0/+11Let's put this in perspective. I'm 36. I've changed careers 3 times since leaving college, and I have worked and/or gone to school everyday since my 3rd year of high school. I graduated the same year Axl released his last album before Chinese Democracy. I really feel productive today.
- chaos7, on 11/23/2008, -0/+5axl's vocals on the leaked version of "madagascar" are better than on the album version....it's like on the album version they digitally lowered his voice or something
- mike17032, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2I felt the same way, that was the only song that I thought didnt sound better on the album.
- Lynxpro, on 11/23/2008, -2/+1...but what format are you listening to the official album on...the CD release or digital download?
Perhaps if the audio Blu-ray format takes off - as opposed to SACD and DVD Audio - then it'll reverse the trend of heavy compression used - at least for the "big acts" - which has infected both modern CD releases as well as the digital download stores...
- PissedOffDigger, on 11/23/2008, -12/+5I like how people comment on the album "OMG SO GOOD, GNR IS BACK!!"
They do realize that this technically isn't GNR, right? It's an Axl Rose solo project.
For that alone, I don't see why ANYONE in their right mind would give a *****.
Seriously - replacing Slash with *BUCKETHEAD*? That's borderline Michael Jackson insane *****. I mean, he's talented but... for *****'s sake. I don't even have to explain anything really because the circus that is his live lineup is... self explanatory.- mike17032, on 11/23/2008, -2/+4Because for a lot of people, Axl was by far the most important part of GnR. I like Slash, but I can live without him.
- oddtom, on 11/23/2008, -2/+2Who cares if he's talented and makes great music, he's got a bucket on his head. How can anyone accept that? I mean, where are your priorities, people?!
Idiot.- PissedOffDigger, on 11/23/2008, -3/+1You, sir, are and idiot :/
- Lynxpro, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3
Axl Rose *IS* GNR just as Robert Smith *IS* The Cure.
It's just that most people prefer the "classic" line-up to GNR than Axl's customized version just as most people prefer "classic" Van Halen with Roth. Shame that Eddie has ***** himself up - and the band - so damn much that he makes Roth look like the sane one.- PissedOffDigger, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1...wow, no.
Axl Rose is not GNR. This isn't Nine Inch Nails where one guy writes everything and hires a band. Every member of GNR contributed to the material in the past.
A band is a group of all the musicians that made it what it was. It's now being treated like a brand, which... no longer makes it band.
Sorry.
- PissedOffDigger, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1...wow, no.
- Syphon8, on 11/23/2008, -1/+6Guitar-wise, Buckethead makes Slash look like a retarded monkey with one hand.
- PissedOffDigger, on 11/23/2008, -0/+0I didn't say he wasn't talented but... you kinda take the "band" less seriously when BUCKETHEAD is trying to keep alive an 80's rock band.
- Syphon8, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3You're aware that Slash wears a top hat wrapped with a sparkly belt, right?
- MattOwings, on 11/24/2008, -1/+1who really takes this band seriously in the first place. I cant believe I even clicked the link involving this crap
- 83JB, on 11/23/2008, -1/+9anybody had any luck connecting to DrPepper.com for the free Dr. Pepper? It seems to be locked up anytime I go to it... big surprise.
- mike17032, on 11/23/2008, -1/+3I was able to do it around 3 AM this morning.
- nofate2029, on 11/23/2008, -2/+5I'm sorry, but GNR ended with the "Use Your Illusion" albums. This new album is just Axl and a bunch of other dudes.
- HencheMann, on 11/23/2008, -2/+2The only band allowed to take that amount of time to create an album is: Boston. Seriously. Can you name any other band with this standard MO?
- albinoazian, on 11/24/2008, -0/+0my bloody valentine? steely dan?
- sleestakslayer, on 11/24/2008, -0/+0It was a dick move for Boston, too.
- SirSaggySack, on 11/23/2008, -4/+5
- MrBogard, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3Being better than pop music doesn't make it good.
- eth3l, on 11/23/2008, -1/+8That article drones on about as long as it took Rose to write CD. Geez, 2 pages in the NYT?
- Krick555, on 11/23/2008, -2/+4Enough already........just let this incarnation of the band die so we can focus our memories on the REAL band. This is poo
- rowlodge, on 11/23/2008, -1/+4ill bet theres not one chinese in it.
- calcm, on 11/23/2008, -1/+8I saw GNR in Las Cruces, New Mexico at the NMSU football field in 1992. It should have been a great concert with metallica and faith no more. But axl's arrogance was so disgusting and disturbing that I lost all respect for the band and him. In other words Axl killed GNR. I will NOT be buying or downloading this album. Axl is an arrogant, condescending, pompous pig and when I hear the single on satellite radio it sounds like a has-been old man who should go smoke weed in the mountains and enjoy his millions in solitude.
- Rudegar, on 11/23/2008, -3/+2i guess he spend it resting his voice as it was rather worn out when he left the stage and caused a riot
when they played with metallica
and maybe some on figthing "immigrants and faggorts" /quote - dreamofrevenge, on 11/23/2008, -9/+1New album is like The Dark Side of the Moon of the new era.
